US Sugar: "We restored a steam locomotive"
    Railfans: "Nice! for excursions?"
US Sugar: "What? no, we needed another engine to pull sugar cars"

I ran the #113 at the Gold Coast RR for several years in the late 80s/early 90s. I absolutely LOVED running her, and what I wouldn't give for a chance to be at the #148's throttle just once! Those Alco light Pacifics are good engines, built for speed, and also for mixed service.
And you're right about the whistle. FEC generally used Nathan 6-chimes on these engines. Also the bells are among the highest-quality and most melodious bronze locomotive bells you'll ever find.

It's cool to see how the steam cloud from the whistle interacts with the denser, more humid air! At higher elevations, the whistle steam from locomotives jets farther before condensing (The air can hold more water than it has, so much of the steam stays evaporated after cooling.), whereas here, it doesn't go as far and much more of it condenses much faster!

I really hope they keep this thing for a long time. Come to think of it, steam trains would be a good use for all the ethanol farmers are producing once cars switch to electric.
