The chess piece was a giant easter egg. I think Lena is a member of checkmate. Based on the piece she was holding she might be a white knight. Checkmate's thing is they are a UN organization to maintain balance between humans and meta humans. On supergirl it will probably be humans and aliens. Checkmate isnt evil, but it isnt exactly good either.

PS, in that lena chess flashback scene, I'm pretty sure having her spefically picking up the white knight chess piece was forshadowing her joining/forming the WhiteKnights (DC 'Good Guys') thinktank organisation. They don't serve the DC Superheros, but they work with them a lot and try to use their brainy abilities to help the Supers win the long fight, even if they occasionally have to manipulate the Supers for their own good. AKA "Supercorp" in my mind.

Am I the only one who wanted to slap James this ep? Why doesn't she trust him? er their ENTIRE story arc, him, Lucy lane, stringing her along; then going back to Lucy. * I know there's more to that i:e Kara being a relationship wuss*. James calling Clark when asked not to, his clear uncalled for and obnoxious jealousy... the list goes on. Then him being Guardian and lying about it up until the last ep basically. Why can't the characters call the others out specifically on their bull shit :S I'd tune in for that, but that goes for wonder Winn and his suddenly slow computer skills and judgement too.

Personally I loved the Checkmate ending (if anything, maybe they haven't quite lived up to the *mystery* of that scene---although w/ the suggestion of "Is Lena good or evil?" we've seen her ups and downs, and back up S5 redemption).
