    Perhaps if we weren't giving the ball away so often we'd be able to concentrate on our own strengths rather than trying to contain the other teams ? We are architects of our own downfall tine and time again.
    Watch how quickly a very ordinary Fulham team moved the ball around from front to back and how many numbers there were in support and compare it to us when playing out of defence.
    We used to be like that, now it's like watching Southgate's England at the euros, slow, boring and lacking method or real intent.
    No energy or desire, it's THAT we need to solve, not a number 6 in my opinion.

    Excellent analysis Chris, the sad reality is many of us have been saying this for months and only now are the journos and other platforms jumping on the bandwagon. Outworking the opposition and high intensity press is only sustainable for so long and Howe seems wedded to one way of playing. In the current squad though, who do we have that could be an effective no 6.

    Eddie Howe has not targeted a 6 since he came. I can’t see that changing any time soon, nor can I see him changing his approach. Can we clone David Batty maybe?

    What we need is the players at their game , our midfield is a force to be recond with , we just haven’t got started this season mate . Bruno, big j, little j,longstaff, tonali, miley . Thats a class midfield both bruno and tonali played at cdm for long periods at their former clubs. We are just shit out of form and our goalkeeper is a liability so far.

    Good video Chris.
    As you say having not bought a natural DM (in any window because Howe doesn't see the need for one) then this is a bit academic. But it's still a useful exercise.
    The other point you quite correctly made is because there isn't a natural DM then whoever we select there, then there will have to be trade offs. I like both the options of Schar or Trippier. The other two possibles for me are Kelly or Lewis Hall. Probably favouring Kelly at the moment.
    I'm also looking forward to your change of formation video later - which is actually the real solution.
    On that one my mind keeps drifting towards a Lewis Hall/ Sandro Tonali central two. Hall really reminds me of Gary Speed rather than Stuart Pearce and I genuinely think that could give us the left foot/ right foot deep lying balance of one going/ one staying that we need. From a trade offs point of view though, you would absolute need Schar, Kelly and Trippier in the back four to keep it right whilst they learn it.

    This is why we should have bought in the window, however Chris you could make the same argument for every position in the side at the moment as we’re absolutely dire at the minute. The shit will hit the fan if we get beat tomorrow.

    Eddie doesn't want to play a defence mid, he has said this in the past, and IMO that is so naive in this day and age, Fulham carved our midfield apart, and I don't want to hear this "he doesn't want to be a DM" Eddie needs to grow some balls and make Tonali or Bruno do it, the club are praying their wages to play wherever the manager dictates! 🤦
    This Man City game is gonna be a painful watch.

    Clearly somethings affecting the players and also EH, the players seem to now feel perhaps that they havent had the signings and ambition promised, and the effects of the civil war, combined with Amanda going are likely to have caused the lack of faith and confidence in both EH and the team overall. I also agree nonetheless that team choice and formation are a big issue. Just surprised that EH ( who i love) isn’t addressing and resolving these things so is he being affected more than we realise?

  • @Clocktoys
    @Clocktoys Месяц назад

    I tend to think it’s a question of drilling the players to ensure we don’t leave the big gap between the defence and midfield (Pope should be pushing the back line upfield). And then it surely isn’t rocket science for the midfielders to ensure one of them stays back during attacks. Discipline basically. A bit of familiarisation and communication and we will be good.

  • @TrifficLad33
    @TrifficLad33 Месяц назад +1

    Bunce is clearly interfering on the training pitch and eales/mitchell are meddling off it, amanda/merdad were got rid of because they were on eddie's side. The team are struggling and eddie gets the blame which is unfair imo. When the board, directors & manager aren't on the same page it's always the manager who gets the sack.

  • @TDM1165
    @TDM1165 Месяц назад +9

    For all the effort you’ve put in here Chris, and it’s admirable, bruno (central) willock (left) tonali (right) is an amazing mid 3, the issue is simple, the manager. He ain’t got a clue. Totally out of ideas, his one notion - run yourselves into the ground for 90 mins and tear your muscles to shreds - having been rightly discontinued, he doesn’t know what to do. He’s more interested in fighting his war with our director of football and practicing his England press conferences (how falsely modest should he go, given it’s either him and carsley? Questions questions…). The happy clappers will say Eddie till we cry and even the moderates do the whole ‘we’re not there yet’ but seriously, what’s going to change? Him n Mitchell going to become great mates? He’s suddenly going to stumble over tactical ideas he’s misplaced for over a year? He’s going to curtail his everlasting love for longstaff and Murphy? We’ve played well a few times in around year, otherwise just relied on individual brilliance and riding our luck. It’s clear he doesn’t have the honour of say a gullit to see it can never work and move on, he’s waiting for his fat pay off. I just hope the board make the decision soon because I’m really starting to dislike Howe and I want to remember the good times. He saved us from relegation and got us top 4. But he’s limited. His decision to keep Gordon when he wanted to leave - when we had joelinton Barnes and Anderson who could all play on the left and no one on the right - and to sell Anderson and minteh is footballing and financial illiteracy, though I blame Mitchell and co for not over ruling him. The fact he’s had and has too much power, ludicrously hanging on to out of form players, target lists that amount to one name, and he’s been indulged for way too long. Time to go.

    We have some great midfield player at our club but Howe hasn’t figured out how to use them and what style of midfield play we are aiming for.
    I believe any top flight manager would love to have these players at his disposal.

  • @martinheywood588
    @martinheywood588 Месяц назад

    Problem is the 4-3-3 we play at the moment does not have a player who is willing to be the single pivot at the base of the midfield staying back when rest are going forward.
    The single pivot would allow us to switch to 4-2-3-1 on defense more easily and we could in certain games switch to a 4-2-3-1 going forward with a double pivot or even 3-4-3 but we cannot do that as no one wants or is displined enough to stay back.
    I said last Jan we needed to buy in a DM and then use that experience to coach Lewis Miley to become a playmaking No 6 (in the style of kimmich) as well as EH said when asked last year that he saw Lewis as a becoming a No6 eventually.
    EH said we had 3 No6 but none the midfielders are doing that role or are displined enough to do it in a 4-3-3 or any other formation.
    For me short term you need to play Trips as the No 6 and in the January window go for a DM/CM who is displined enough to fill the centre of the park.
    Two names come to mind for me we should go for. Palacios at Leverhusen who we were linked to last Jan and who played in a double pivot with Xavi and did a lot of the dirty defensive work in the middle of the park last season. The other is Stiller at Stuttgart who just broken into the German team whos more of a player maker who uses positioning and blocks more to snuff out attacks. He was going to be understudy to Kimmich at BM but wanted 1st team football but went to Stuttgart a couple of seasons ago.

    It seems to me that there is a hint of laziness in the team at the mo, they are living on past glories it seems, but from what you have shown is in a large part the two Brazilians are guilty of being out of position and Bruno being the captain should be spending a bit if time on the pitch barking out orders and organizing the game better. As captain it is also his role to make sure a gap is filled

  • @sirobson4080

    I honestly think that Howe doesn't have the football iq to play another formation other than 4-3-3. And this is why I think he's not an elite coach, he's too stubborn to adapt a new style or even formation. With 4-3-3 we lack creativity in midfield, all we have is runners & grafters. We need a Madison style midfielder to open up the opposition.

    Need to pick a team and stick with it.
    More compact.
    More lines.
    Fully committed, fully fit, players.
    Full backs provide the width. Yes they may make mistakes but let's cut them some slack.
    Tonali as the '6' / quarterback.
    Longstaff and Joelinton tackling and pressing in the middle.
    Murphy and Barnes linking up to press the 2 City 'pivots', provide service to Isak and get a few shots in.
    Tino Schar Kelly Hall
    Longstaff Tonali Joelinton
    Murphy Barnes
    Isak

    Playing football without a defensive midfielder is like having no insurance. I think Trippier would be better because he is quicker than Schär and could give support to the fullbacks. Alternatively, play with a back 5 with Livra and Hall as Wingbacks, and have Krafth, Schär and Burn as centre backs. At the moment we have no clearly defined roles.

    There is enough quality in the midfield squad for selection, The Manager has a history of being to loyal to under performing players and performances are dropping because some players know they are safe, We will also get disharmony in the squad if others are not given a chance when those on the pitch are poor. Also when we have to make a certain player captain to influence his decision in staying when it is clearly effecting his game is mind boggling (if a player wants elsewhere then on ya bike as far as im concerned regardless of their name). At the moment we are like a luxury restaurant with enough quality ingredients (players) and not having a quality chef who can put it all together (Eddie). He did great for us yes, but he only has one way and that will not take us to the next level in my opinion. Wishing you all well.
