”We’re still going sideways!” is not always a good thing 😂

5 years later and you never hear about this. But we have self driving cars.

Nice development, make joysticking and docking easy for all skippers 😀

This is a great first step. I am sure as each year passes it will get better.

As a drone flyer. This sort of precision GPS navigation has been around sometime. I had several DJI drones that could land on a 1 m landing pad, after being airborne sometime and at some distance from the landing pad. One touch of a button and it would return to home automatically and land on the pad. Obviously the wind and the fact it was in 3-D space could make that process difficult to perform manually. I never had a failure. I am sure Volvo Penta will be able to refine their auto docking system, so that only sensors on the yacht will be needed. Perhaps using the same technology as my drones. Optical flow sensors, perhaps. When in close quarters.

Dynamic Positioning Systems (DPS) we used on vessels for oil platforms. These systems, categorized as DP1 to DP3 based on precision levels, involve various components like thrusters. The differences between these categories typically lie in their costs and the size of the thrusters used. DPS technology has been crucial in maintaining position and stability for vessels during operations near oil platforms for several years now. Seems that Volvo Penta create a cheaper system and smaller trusters, but the principle seems the same to me.

A promising start even though there was a mile either side of that boat!

This will take the fun out of making a good docking yourself.
    Okay, I'm old.

I'm not understanding! Lots of yachts in the 40+ foot range have bow and stern thrusters. I have watched lots of them move sideways. Why do the commentators think moving sideways is so awesome?
If the system is reliable this would be helpful for single handing a big boat.
"Sensors on the dock" doesn't sound like it will be useful for the passage maker class.

Censors on the dock???? Well that not going to be much use if they’re needed.

Is there some compelling reason that we shouldn't expect people to be able to pilot their vessels competently?

Yeah, there's nothing compelling about evolving. We should go back to being cavemen.

This is a very long docking process....and surprisingly didn’t approach straight.
With an IPS system....if you need this system, you may want to look into another hobby

Far more stressful letting the boat dock itself. I thought Swedes were smart???? You could park to of those boats in that space.

Need to get Tesla to develop the system. I would fall asleep waiting for that to dock. And it needs sensors on the dock....

Not impressed, sorry, your boat is not centred and takes for ever docking, that is why there is a captain, is the one knowing how to dock a boat….

@7:57; ""So what is the next step"" asks the ""BLONDE BIMBETTE"" to the caption, ""WELL THIS IS WHEN I AM NORMALLY THE MOST STRESSED DURING ANY/ALL VOYAGES, SO HOW ABOUT YOU GET DOWN ON YOUR KNEES AND MAKE DOUBLE SURE THAT I HAVE NO STRESS TODAY, YES? OTHERWISE THIS IS NOW KNOWN AS PLANK TIME, YOU CAN EITHER WALK THE PLANK OR.................................IF YOU HAVE ASSUMED THE POSITION & ARE NOW DOWN ON YOUR KNEES, YOU WILL BE LOOKING AT THE OTHER "PLANK" THAT IS NOW IN PLAY, YOUR CHOICE???""
