Dr. LaChapelle talks about acceptance for people living with chronic pain and goes into detail about the new normal a person living with pain has to establish.
I found your talk disheartening. Maybe you should stop some of the clinical research, and spend some face-to-face time with people who suffer with one or more chronic illnesses. It’s easy to lecture from a very sterile point of you when you yourself are not in a mode of suffering. Put away your notebook and analytical approach to those of us with chronic disease and illness, and just listen to us. You might learn something. Also, many of us are not born this way. We had great lives, some of us were athletes, many of us parents. And suddenly we were just robbed of our lives.Worst talk ever.
A lot of negative comments here but watching the full video has given me an understanding of 'acceptance'. I've lived my life the past 6 years by trying to ignore (some ups and downs) the pain and only having hope for being diagnosed and returning to 'normal'. I never learned to live WITH my illness. The hardest part is that I'm still undiagnosed, and my flares come at seemingly random times. It's made me irritable, it's made me put my wife and her needs at the bottom of my list (unconsciously), even though she's the most important thing in my life. Everyone that has chronic pain should listen to the full video, Dr. Diana LaChapelle has given me hope
Thank you for taking the time to post this video. I happened to fall on this as I was doing research trying to find something to help me cope with my chronic illness. Watching this video helps me a lot. I am now learning how to manage my pain, illness and lifestyle now. Thank you so much.
Chronic pain is the most awful, life changing part of my life I've had to experience in this life yet. Why do we need to gain acceptance faster? It's hard to listen to anyone who doesn't suffer with chronic pain tell me how to accept, tolerate & manage mine. How can someone speak about it when they don't know what it's like to wake up with gratitude every morning just to be reminded that your pain is still there before you even move to turn off your alarm? I've accepted that my pain is chronic & I will never be able to live without it. This has not made my life any better or help me continue doing things I enjoy. This doesn't include the conditions that go with the pain. I hear no empathy in this woman speaking.
I have an undiagnosed chronic illness, after 14 years there still trying to figure out what cause so much pain. Lots of diagnosis but not full explaining the situation. Trying to learn if it's tos. Massage seems to help most but not covered by insurence. I think massage should be avaliable for everyone and covered. Why is every thing else covered but not massage.
I have CRPS , it's one year and 3 months and I will never accept this ! Have you lost your nugget ? It's called hope, there is hope. At any given time, the health care system might have a cure or something . Acceptance is not a good thing, I will never accept this. The research might tell you that but for God's sake listen to your patients. You can interview me. I'm in Montreal, I'd be glad to help you !
Not all of us have the same diagnosis nor live in an area that has all of this research nor be able to afford it. One of my bulging discs herniated after a single epidural, they want to do a surgery that has only a 50 percent success rate and will take at least 6 months to heal from, and even if they succeed, the relief is not permanent. In a few years the pain will come back and you don’t have anything to help it.
Talking and sharing your suffering with your family is really important otherwise they expect everything from you the same way as they used to before you were ill and you have no other option but to fulfill their expectations.
I now just feel anger down to the pit of my gut,,,,,My answer is NO, we need more focus on cause and cure instead of being written off in the blame culture.
I have undiagnosed numerous symptom. The worst is severe dry eyes. Nothing has helped. Cant work, cant read, affects me everyday. I am going to work on acceptance.
I don't want to hear from anyone about how to live with chronic pain unless they too are living with the condition.
Exactly right. Live with it? I can’t work. How can I even LIVE? It’s just a long drawn out death sentence.

What are the book titles and authors? I can’t see the screen.
Obviously she does not have chronic pain- we have no choice but to accept chronic pain if you live with it
