This movie is fucking great! Didn't think it'd be on the list so I'm pleasantly surprised. Max Landis is a great writer and I can't believe this is his only movie that's 100% him (no studio interference). If you guys think this is great, I highly recommend his Superman book 'American Alien'. It's amazing. If you're a Supes fan, it's the best in years. If you're not, it'll get you into superman.
I thought this film was just okay, I certainly wouldn’t rate this better than the last couple films on the list. If this makes the list then I think Akira will make the list too.
It's not "100% him," though. Josh Trank came up with the concept, which is the whole draw of the film. No one looks back on Chronicle and remembers the dialogue or characters.
It's funny that the people who are claiming that this isn't a superhero movie have no justification for why it isn't a superhero movie. They get powers (ability to fly, move things with their mind, etc), one uses it for evil, the other for good. How exactly isn't this a superhero movie?
superhero is a type of heroic character usually possessing supernatural or superhuman powers, who is dedicated to fighting crime, protecting the public, and usually battling supervillains. In away it is but isn't because none of them were heros nor a villain.
Well, that seems to apply to this movie in every sense. Especially given the ending. I haven't seen it in a while, but I thought Matt (superhero) and Andrew (supervillain) were fighting and Matt seemed to be protecting the public from Andrew in a sense. Leaving Andrew's power unchecked would lead him to become a supervillain. I don't know, it makes sense to me.
I kinda want Super on the list as well. As we creep higher...? Dunno. For me, I'll have to think about the importance of the story vs actual quality(which wasn't bad in the slightest)
Yea same. I love the movie and it's in the top 10 for me personally, but I know I'm in the minority on that. It HAS to be on this list though, and we are getting to the higher tier movies now. I'm worried it might not make the list at all :(
Oh Macuga I love you but you making it harder and harder to defend you. No in fact impossible to defend if you can't see that this is a superhero movie.
Papi Grande: I think this is way more of a superhero move than matrix. I mean the matrix is just one big simulation bit these guys actually recieve powers.
Neo has powers outside of the matric because "outside" of the matrix is also the matrix. That is the only way that makes sense, and why there have been many neos before him. It is all the matrix
I was thinking the same thing...this is just a Sci Fi movie...not a superhero movie lol Collider is kinda reaching with this list ..maybe they should have did a top 25 instead of a top 50
This is definitely a Superhero movie, it's just that it's an origin movie that focuses mostly on the villain's journey and the films eventual hero is such a bland character that you don't really care.
Sci fi and superhero can kinda go hand in hand. The movie ends with the kid trying to stop his cousin from destroying the city. And he saves some folks along the way. It's kinda like MoS. I'd say it counts
Why is it a prerequisite to have an alias and a gay looking costume to be a superhero. Does Superman really have an alias? A pair of glasses. That's what people call an alias? Chronicle is a superhero movie.
Costumes and aliases don't really matter. That's just narrow-minded thinking. As for stopping crimes, as I recall there is fight to stop the "bad" one at the end (been awhile since I have seen this). Considering this would be an origin story, that's good enough.
George If only they had a list for superVILLAIN movies. Do you seriously think that movies that subvert the genre (in any way) shouldn't be allowed? How fucking boring are you?
Why are they so proud of themselves that they put a movie that is not Marvel or DC on this list? There are other superhero movies that fit that description on this list.
TheDomoNation Toy Reviews I don't care, WW just an OK movie. It doesn't deserve Top 5 or even Top 10. If it's just for "cultural, inspiring, powerful" bullshit, that this list is full of bullshit.

Even then, all of this, including our stance on whether V and Chronicle should be considered SH movies, are just opinion.
My Rankings of their Rankings so Far: 24: Big Hero 6 25: Captain America: The First Avenger 26: The LEGO Batman Movie 27: V for Vendetta 28: Ant-Man 29: The Dark Knight Rises 30: Watchmen 31: Chronicle 32: Doctor Strange 33: Hellboy II: The Golden Army 34: The Crow 35: Batman Returns 36: Hellboy 37: Man of Steel 38: Dredd 39: Thor 40: Avengers: Age of Ultron 41: Blade II 42: Blade 43: Iron Man 3 44: Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 45: The Rocketeer 46: The Incredible Hulk 47: Thor: The Dark World 48: Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles 49: Power Rangers 50: The Amazing Spider-Man
What I like best about Chronicle is that the main characters don't gain powers, put on domino masks and decide to fight crime. They do what most people would do with those kinds of powers: They have fun. I doubt that anyone except maybe an adrenaline junkie or a fame-seeker would become a hero...unless they had some severe trauma in their past (like the crime-related loss of a loved one.) If you look at superheroes, you'll see that most of them had some trauma to push them to save people. The perfect example of this is Spider-Man. Peter Parker wanted to be a cool guy, make money and gain fame with his powers. Then his Uncle Ben was killed by a thief Peter let go because he wanted to punish someone else and made then on it's "With great power..." That being said, another reason I like Chronicle is because it's a very well-done origin story. The events in the 2nd half of the film form the tragedy that will propel the surviving guy to be a hero. It's a shame that the director messing up so badly on Fant4stic will likely prevent a sequel from being made (due to association if nothing else.)
Far too high, this movie is way too overrated honestly. I like the first half but when something pivotal happens it’s a completely different movie in the second half which just doesn’t work imo
Went out and bought this as soon as it was available on DVD. I loved watching the progression of the hero and the villain in this movie. Just because there aren't 100 disposable minions from the bad guy doesn't mean it's not a super hero movie. It's small. It's contained. It's like watching the origin of Magneto vs Charles. They start as friends, then one goes dark. Obviously not as good as Magneto & Charles, but you know what I mean. I thought they kept it small, and because they did, it worked well.
Isn't the deefinition of a superhero a person with abilities doing good for others? You never get that in this movie. Yes it was a really good movie but I don't think this one belongs on the list.
I wouldn't have thought of Chronicle initially as a Superhero movie. But once you establish that it is, it should be way above 24! This is a great film, great story, with great characters, and above all great development of those characters!
One guy is destroying the city and has super powers. He is a super villain One guy is trying to take down the super villain with his super powers. He is a super hero Chronicle is a superhero movie
Honestly, I can’t this list seriously. If we’re going to do a all time comics movie list... where’s Conan the barbarian, Robocop, Sin City, Flash Gordon, Swamp thing, the toxic avenger, Constantine, the matrix, Blankman, Metorman, Predator, Grind house, From Hell, Terminator, Aliens, The fifth element, Wolverine, Spawn, the dc animated collection, and the Star Wars Trilogy? All movies with comic book Connections.
This list is what you get when you have everyone at Collider get a ballot for voting. My most important criteria in ranking superhero movies, would be re-watchability. For me, I watched Chronicle once and only once. I would rank it 48th, just above Power Rangers and TMNT. Just my opinion.
More people need to see this movie, is such an underrated movie! And yes it is a super hero movie; they get powers from an energy source, they can fly, have super strength, & have telepathic abilities. So it does count, & 24 is a good spot for this movie.
So am I the only one who have´t watched a found footage movie? I remember when I followed this guys when they were AMC Movie Talk and they mentioned this as well. I have really not seen any of this overexposer of found footage movies. They say they are mostly horror movies so maybe that´s why. Not seen this movie, watched a scene when I heard Dehann was gonna be Harry in The Amazing Spiderman 2. Good casting and good actor but missused so much in that movie. But got to give him praise for trying and doing his best with the material.
Great movie, yes it is a superhero movie still hard to place it on this List. I do not like 'Found Footage Movies' so from all of this movies this is the best one for me. Still I do like the Comic-Superhero-Movies better. #24 BvS #25 Watchmen #26 Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 #27 Man of Steel #28 Ant-Man #29 Captain America: The First Avenger #30 Avengers: Age of Ultron #31 The Dark Knight Rises #32 Thor #33 Doctor Strange #34 Iron Man 3 #35 Thor: The Dark World #36 Chronicle #37 The Rocketeer #38 Hellboy #39 Dredd #40 Batman Returns #41 Hellboy II #42 Blade #43 The Crow #44 Incredible Hulk #45 Amazing Spider-Man #46 Constantine #47 V for Vendetta #48 Blade II #49 LEGO Batman Movie #50 Big Hero 6

i like how up to this point there wasn't any fox marvel movie on this list. it basically means that if you see a fox/marvel movie it either gonna be really great or it will definately suck balls. no middle ground
This movie is my all time favorite found footage movie. I guess it's a semi-superhero movie, but if that's the case, I think it should be even higher. I find it quite underrated
I haven't seen the movie in a while, but how many crimes does Bruce Willis stop in Unbreakable? Just one right? And then his exposure of Sam Jackson at the end? Sure he touches a lot of folks to tune in his abilities, but he doesn't fight crime on a consistent basis at all. In Chronicle you have a young man who gets powers, sees how it corrupts his friend and then stops that friend who is going to hurt a lot of people. This costume requirement is silly.
Chronicle was great, would be sweet with a sequel. perhaps not a found footage like the 1st. although it works for that one. doesn't mean the 2nd needs to have it if there´s one planned. steve said that there were others that found the thing right? love the car & spider scene like the slight akira vibe as well. love the shows.
This is a superhero origin movie they get powers. They learn how to use powers. One becomes evil the other tries to stop him and protect others. The movie shows each character drastic turn with their powers with great powers comes greater responsibilities.
24 is too high. The found format forces a POV narrative at the expense of cinematography and there is a reason it's mostly used in horror movies where a narrow tunnel 'claustrophobic' vision and not knowing what's lurking outside the camera frame can contribute to the atmosphere of the genre. Doesn't work for me here as the excessive camera bobbing just got annoying real quick.
Really like the listing so far. I don't agree with all of it but the majority and can understand the other points. I'm more interested in the talk than the number. Looks like I'm the only one..
Chronicle is different, and that's why it's magnificent and matters. You know what causes genre fatigue, when everything looks, feels, and operates the same. Chronicle is a great take on the Superhero origin, it takes the conceit to a different place in having these 3 very disparately clicked high schoolers grow a friendship & then animosity because of these powers. Not only that but this is easily the best a found footage film will ever be, from a technical perspective, and the in Universe reasoning behind how the camera moves like that is a stroke of genius. Dane Dehaan's character's descent into Supervillaindom is believable and you can feel genuine empathy for him whilst still knowing he is wrong, that's great villain writing. The only real gripe I have is the Hero kid is a bland actor, to be fair he is next to Dane Dehaan & Michael B Jordan. But his character is written as milquetoast and makes him so meh that it kind of hinders the finale. This for me is definitely a Top 20 Superhero movie, so different yet so on point, one of the fresh air films in the genre.
The movie studio that made the film, gave the movie director and fans of the film the middle finger when it came to the sequel. The movie director had a vision for such a sequel and the studio said F that and talked about a reboot for it then gave us nothing.
I actually agree this is a super hero's origin story and a great movie, though I probably wouldn't have remembered Chronicle when trying to compile a list like this. Now that it is here though, I really hope Umbrekeable makes the cut as well.
I’m glad this made the list. Most realistic depiction of superpowers & how people would react to them.
I hope Unbreakable gets on this list
David Mitchell-Baker it's probably at the top 15s
Thats a nice pick!
Hopefully it makes it in the top 10.
I think it will for sure.
1) I doubt it. 2) that movie sucks.
Alex Love Max Landis finally did something right
I thought this film was just okay, I certainly wouldn’t rate this better than the last couple films on the list. If this makes the list then I think Akira will make the list too.
Hoepfulyl Akira makes the list becuase Chronicle is very influenced from it
It's not "100% him," though. Josh Trank came up with the concept, which is the whole draw of the film. No one looks back on Chronicle and remembers the dialogue or characters.
+Alex Love of corse max gonna be on the list there friends with him in real life
This is one of my ultimate faves! I remember how shocked I was after first seeing this in theaters by how great this was!
God damn it Collider. Just stop showing Macuga yelling about every movie not being a "real" superhero movie.
Better yet, just stop showing Macuga...on any of the Collider programs.
So....is Matilda gonna be on the list
Bwah ha haha ha hahaha HAHAHA
Gahd i love that movie
But...
Im saying. Like wth collider. These aren’t superhero movies
It's funny that the people who are claiming that this isn't a superhero movie have no justification for why it isn't a superhero movie.
They get powers (ability to fly, move things with their mind, etc), one uses it for evil, the other for good. How exactly isn't this a superhero movie?
Alex Bisel No costume, I guess?
That's the only thing I can think of. And if that's someone's definition of what makes a super hero, then I don't know what to tell them.
superhero is a type of heroic character usually possessing supernatural or superhuman powers, who is dedicated to fighting crime, protecting the public, and usually battling supervillains.
Can you call even 1 character from Chronicle a hero? THEN SHUT >UP
I swear if The Incredibles isn't at least in the Top 15 I'm gonna be SO pissed!
Ringsfan1 The way collider has always been talking about it, it will surely make top 5
It's my favourite and in my top 5 movies of all time
Kick-Ass better be on this list soon!
WANTZiN Exactly what I've been thinking. I'm getting nervous though
I kinda want Super on the list as well. As we creep higher...?
Dunno. For me, I'll have to think about the importance of the story vs actual quality(which wasn't bad in the slightest)

Oh Macuga I love you but you making it harder and harder to defend you. No in fact impossible to defend if you can't see that this is a superhero movie.
Morevids101 right?! I love Macuga but in this series I’ve disagreed with literally EVERYTHING he’s said!
extraanarchy I don't know what's up with him lately.
George how is this not a suoerhero film? 3 young boys gain superpowers after making a discovery underground. That is literally it's Imdb description.
Wasn't there going to be a second part to it?
Talking About Movies The director left the project leaving Max alone. The fun thing is that the director left the sequal project for Fantastic Four😂😂
Huh? Ok if this is a superhero movie then The Matrix has got to be one also.
Papi Grande: I think this is way more of a superhero move than matrix. I mean the matrix is just one big simulation bit these guys actually recieve powers.
sith empire neo has powers outside the matrix
Neo has powers outside of the matric because "outside" of the matrix is also the matrix. That is the only way that makes sense, and why there have been many neos before him. It is all the matrix
i am not saying it makes sense, but the only reason FOR it to make sense is if "the real world" is also the matrix
Collider’s Top 5
1. Catwoman
2. Daredevil
3. Fantastic Four: Rise Of The Silver Surfer
4. Batman Forever
5. X-Men Origins Wolverine
Hahaha
What about "The Mask", the cult classic from 94 with the great Jim Carey? Hello? Are you forgot about this awesome movie? Hope not Collider, hope not.
I don’t think this counts, it’s more SCI Fi. Just having people with abilities doesn’t mean they are super heroes lol.
I was thinking the same thing...this is just a Sci Fi movie...not a superhero movie lol Collider is kinda reaching with this list ..maybe they should have did a top 25 instead of a top 50
I agree this is not a superhero movie it completely invalidates the list to me.
This is definitely a Superhero movie, it's just that it's an origin movie that focuses mostly on the villain's journey and the films eventual hero is such a bland character that you don't really care.

Never go full Macuga
Unless you are called "Josh", then it is all gold
@George: Explain how it isn't.
Costumes and aliases don't really matter. That's just narrow-minded thinking. As for stopping crimes, as I recall there is fight to stop the "bad" one at the end (been awhile since I have seen this). Considering this would be an origin story, that's good enough.
But Macuga shouldn't be on this list.
This is in my top 20, but safe to say the moment I saw this a huge smile came across my face. This is one of my all time favorites! Love the choice!
+George it's not your typical superhero movie. More of an origin story for a villain.
100% agree.
George If only they had a list for superVILLAIN movies. Do you seriously think that movies that subvert the genre (in any way) shouldn't be allowed? How fucking boring are you?
This was a fun movie but ranked WAY too high, especially considering some of the movies ranked lower.
Super hero movie... Really?
Well, perfect. According to their logic Empire strikes back will be number 1 on that list.
At least Star Wars has successful comic book runs after they came out. Chronical??? It's not even that good.
Sooooooo does this mean Akira will be on here?
marcwa74 highly doubt many people at Collider know what the greatest Anime movie of all time is
Happy this is on the list also of if this can be on the list, then hopefully Unbreakable can as well
Super yes. Hero. No! This is a scifi movie.
I didn't think this would be on the list. Nice one, Collider.
So glad you guys put Chronicle on this list.
I don’t think this was a superhero movie. Like the writer max landis said “I wanted to do Carrie with boys”
More like Akira but live action
It's not a superhero movie tbh... the only justification to counter that argument is that they have super powers lol.
Why are they so proud of themselves that they put a movie that is not Marvel or DC on this list? There are other superhero movies that fit that description on this list.
yeah. hellboy for e.g.
and the crow
and V for Vendetta. they must have forgotten.. or something.
Maybe we'll see Barb Wire show up.
i didn't expect this too be on the list ... what a pleasant surprise !
WOAH! What a suprise this was. Pretty solid movie? Yes. Superhero movie? No. Deserved spot? Ehh... maybe.
i just watched this today after seeing it on your list. Freakin an amazing movie... thx for putting it out there.
Please don't let WW be in Top 10.
Its gonna get into the top 10 #staypressed
TheDomoNation Toy Reviews I don't care, WW just an OK movie. It doesn't deserve Top 5 or even Top 10. If it's just for "cultural, inspiring, powerful" bullshit, that this list is full of bullshit.
TheDomoNation Toy Reviews What's the bullshit?
Michael Anderson of course, it’s not about film anymore, it’s about cULtuRe lol.
Michael Anderson no its gonna be in the top 20 because ITS A GREAT MOVIE. If it weren't a great movie it wouldn't surpass 15/17 of the MCU films domestically.

mrcooldeadly85 ya I know I'm gonna revise my list before collider finishes there top 50, and fix that 👍
Me: this is totally not a superhero movie!
Schnepp: this is technically a superhero origin story
Me: yes sir
An amazing movie, glad it made the list.
I have high hopes that Shark Boy and Kava Girl are #1
I was waiting for this.
Dude, this movie rules, and I'm happy its getting recognition. It's just as much a super hero flick as V for Vendetta or The Crow.
Meh. That's part of my point. But yeah. Chronicle rules. It may not be a traditional SH movie, but it's there, and IMO belongs on the list.
Because they have special abilities, and one of them goes rogue and tries to hurt kill other people, and the other tries to stop him, KNOWING the other is stronger. Putting yourself in danger, to protect other people is heroic, no?

The events in the 2nd half of the film form the tragedy that will propel the surviving guy to be a hero. It's a shame that the director messing up so badly on Fant4stic will likely prevent a sequel from being made (due to association if nothing else.)
Far too high, this movie is way too overrated honestly. I like the first half but when something pivotal happens it’s a completely different movie in the second half which just doesn’t work imo
mk6rfc1 overrated? Not that much people know about it or even talk about it. If anything it's underrated.
+mijan hoque there’s a difference between underseen and underrated, everyone who talks about this movie tends to gush about it
Wtf.. that's not a superhero movie
This is probably the one ranking that Collider has done right so far.
Finally, a fill I can agree that deserves this list and deserves exactly where it’s placed
It doesn’t seem like a superhero movie
I'm so glad they're recognizing this as a superhero movie because it had all the makings of a superhero origin movie minus the costumes.
YEAH : ) Love Chronicle!
If we are doing SciFi, Akira should be top-10.
Oh wow! I forgot about this movie!! Excellent movie!! 💜💜💜
Yeeeeeees! I LOOOOVE THIS MOVIE, so glad it made the list!
Unbreakable better be top 20.
Isn't the deefinition of a superhero a person with abilities doing good for others? You never get that in this movie. Yes it was a really good movie but I don't think this one belongs on the list.
The cousin uses his abilities to save everyone even though it means killing his cousin so by your own definition it’s a superhero movie
George What costume does Wolverine wear in the movies?
Lol but why does the intro for these videos remind of that documentary we all had to sit through in 10th grade history
I wouldn't have thought of Chronicle initially as a Superhero movie. But once you establish that it is, it should be way above 24! This is a great film, great story, with great characters, and above all great development of those characters!
One guy is destroying the city and has super powers. He is a super villain
One guy is trying to take down the super villain with his super powers. He is a super hero
Chronicle is a superhero movie
Chronicle is one of my favorite movies ever made! I would put this in the top 5 for sure!
This is NOT a superhero movie. Smh.
Good for Chronicle (although Marvel fan-boys will be extremely upset)!
[The Dark Knight Returns should be #1 (easily).]
Why is there no sequel to this.

Thank you for your List, some very interesting numbers there ;-)
i like how up to this point there wasn't any fox marvel movie on this list. it basically means that if you see a fox/marvel movie it either gonna be really great or it will definately suck balls. no middle ground
I Pretty much loved this movie, an absolute EDGE seater.
It's a real damn shame that a sequel never happened.
Can't believe we never got a sequel to this flick, it was fun
This movie is my all time favorite found footage movie. I guess it's a semi-superhero movie, but if that's the case, I think it should be even higher. I find it quite underrated
Sorry Mark, but if you're not dating on the Bumbles, you don't know what you're missing.
Chronicle isn't a superhero movie. That's like saying Carrie is a superhero movie
Carrie would be a super villain movie I guess
George the X-Men and Fantastic Four didn’t fight crimes or have secret identities
Should Firestarter be consider superheroes origin story too?
I haven't seen the movie in a while, but how many crimes does Bruce Willis stop in Unbreakable? Just one right? And then his exposure of Sam Jackson at the end? Sure he touches a lot of folks to tune in his abilities, but he doesn't fight crime on a consistent basis at all. In Chronicle you have a young man who gets powers, sees how it corrupts his friend and then stops that friend who is going to hurt a lot of people. This costume requirement is silly.
100% agree. They don't save anyone or do anything superheroic. BUT this is a great movie all the same.
This is no only one of my favourite superhero film, but also one of my favourite coming-of-age movie
Chronicle was great, would be sweet with a sequel. perhaps not a found footage like the 1st.
although it works for that one. doesn't mean the 2nd needs to have it if there´s one planned.
steve said that there were others that found the thing right?
love the car & spider scene
like the slight akira vibe as well.
love the shows.
It was 28 for me... I'm happy with 24. And it definitely is a superhero movie
Such a sick movie, I like how it is an original movie within the genre, perfect position in my opinion.
This movie is awesome!! I personally put in the TOP 20. Also, I think they're gonna put Unbreakable in the list.
This is definitely a superhero movie. I LOVE IT.
This is better than MOS....really?
yes
Brett Palmer no.
YES!
Wow I totally forgot about this movie, but it is really good. Think it deserves it this high spot
Chronicle shuld be top 10
Totally forgot about Chronicle, but yeah it does deserve to be this high, even if I don’t count it as a “traditional” comic book movie
COME ON...higher or better then the origin of the avengers characters? please stop.
I forgot about this movie. I remember liking it, but I only saw it once.
Should’ve been higher on the list, Andrew is really one of the best modern movie characters . I’d put it in 15 or 13
Chronicle isn’t a superhero movie. It’s technically a super power movie. Just thought that was a little obvious
Fair Point. It can't be all just Marvel and DC; there has to be room for the other voices, so okay, yeah. This is a solid representative.
Chronicle was fantastic. Definitely took a few pages from Akira
