Howdy, y'all. I have been learning how to crochet this year, largely by watching your amazing tutorials! You really are the best at them here on RUclips: thank you! I actually made a blanket for my grandbaby on the way, using this wattle stitch (in many colours, as kind of 'stripes' of various colours in both vertical & horizontal bands. Quite a hodge podge of a design but intentionally & quite beautifully so). And yes, I'm a subscriber:) However; when using this favourite wattle stitch, I always have to do the first stitches differently to how you show & explain in your tutorial, or else I end up with narrower & narrower rows (or rounds). I still can't quite understand what it is I am missing? I get around this by doing a half treble at the end of a row, as instructed, but in a different spot to what you show, & having to do my first cluster of double + chain + treble into the first gap, which I should be 'missing', according to the instructions. Or my understanding of them. Has anyone else had this same issue? To avoid making too large a 'gap' or 'hole' at the beginning of a new round, I also have to get creative now & then, changing where I pop my last stitch (the half treble, just before finishing my round & chaining to start the next one) OR where I pop the first one of my next round. Crochet is interesting & liberating in that you can in fact fiddle around with your stitches & still end up with gorgeous items (in which your 'mistakes' in 'getting creative' can still look deliberate). Which is one of the reasons I love to crochet (even though I can't follow a pattern to save my life). Am just curious to know whether anyone else out there has found this pattern or stitch - so supremely simple & beautiful otherwise - a bit 'odd' in the same way that I have? Thank you for your time!
I’m really happy to hear that my tutorials have helped you along in your crochet journey 😊 For the wattle stitch, from row 2 and onwards you should be working into the chain 1 spaces that you created in the previous row, ending with a half treble in the turning chain at the end. I’ve not encountered any problems with the rows narrowing as you describe but sometimes the yarn and even hook size that we use can affect how a pattern looks so you may find you get better results using a different yarn etc, as thinner yarns for example can look more ‘holey’. 😊

I love your tutorials and have learned to crochet from them. I have a question on this stitch. It looks like the edges are a little jagged and not straight. I’m looking for a dense stitch to make dishcloths as gifts. I don’t want to put a border on them. Thanks again for all you do for us
Very pretty stitch! I don’t see the link for your video on which chains to work into on the first row. I’ve searched your videos ad RUclips and cannot find it. I’m really curious to hear thoughts on this subject. I learned so many years ago and we always went through 2 loops, never just the one. My teacher, who is also my age learned the same way so maybe it was how it was taught back then. I don’t really know. Now occasionally I will work in the back bump or spine of the stitch if a pattern calls for it or if I like the look better. I will only go into just one loop if the yarn is fiddly. I have finally given myself permission to do that after so many years! Lol! I would really love to watch your video on this subject. So if you can post it that would be awesome. If I’ve missed it in the description box below I apologize. Thanks for sharing this lovely stitch!

This method will be very helpful, as you said, when either doing a border or if you have to essentially work in the round like when making a basket bottom. I never thought of that! Those stitches, whether I go in 2 or 1 are always fiddly. This way they will be so easy to work into. This is quite exciting! I think I will do some swatching today! You can identify the stitches (particularly the double crochets) because they look like Vs, so you can count each V and work vertically - however, I would really recommend using a row counter to help you keep track with this one 😊

momroxx The UK double is a single in the US. I think you have just misunderstood her because she is exactly right. The UK treble is our US double as she stated.

hey! i know this is a shot in the dark because this video is so old, but is there any way to “tell” each row like to be able to count them?

In the us our double crochet is exactly what you do for a double crochet. Not sure where you are getting what US stitches are but it’s not correct.
