      Absolutely. Being human (and visibly disabled), I sometimes get incredibly frustrated with the sheer volume of ablest comments. 99% of the time, I hold my tongue. After all, I was taught that “if you don’t have something nice to say, don’t say anything at all.” However, I’m starting to seriously reconsider that guidance. Maybe the uninformed/uncaring public needs an immediate reality check - the worst offenders, at least. 🤬

      When I was younger, I was oblivious to what ppl with physical and or mntl disabilities go through until I worked at organizations like AbilityFirst (Camp Joan MIer) and Cerebral Palsy Associations of NY (Camp Jened) It really ex[amded my perspective on a particular population that is treated as second class citizens. I wish there were mandatory volunteer programs for youth, that exposes them to ppl they would otherwise not be familiar with.
      It was help solve young ppl not having a purpose other than video games or social media. It would also teach ppl at a young age to be more mindful and respectful of ppl with differences and show there are actually more similarities than differences. I wish there were a president or governor that would have something like this on their platform. Society would be better for it.

    I'm so with you on the inconsiderate rudeness that some people show us when we're out and about in nature. It disappointing to say that I've experienced the very same thing here in the UK and honestly after so many episodes it's effected my self-esteem so much that I'm unable to venture out despite trying a number of times. Exactly. Asking because you think the equipment is cool is fine. Asking because you want to know why the person is using the mobility aid is not. Let's not ask people to tell total strangers one of the most traumatic days of their life... or sometimes you're born with a disability and there's no "story" to share. I would have responded to that guy, "I use one?"

    "What do you think, Ope?" Ha! That could be a branded tag line. I want a t-shirt with that. 8 D
    After this outing Nicholette's ready to take on Brian at arm-wrestling.
    There are ruins like that in my area - "The Patapsco Female Institute" - but the caretakers destroyed the delicate beauty of the old walls be erecting unnecessarily robust steel bracing - which they went on to paint a hideous shade of bright blue so to double-down on their mistake. Everyone groans when they see the ruins now. Such a wrong move - bad job - even seeming like deliberate sabotage! - turning a picturesque and evocative place into a terrible eyesore. Once I overheard a visitor say - "They scared all the ghosts away!" If this castle ever needs steel bracing - I hope the caretakers go about it tastefully - sensitively. I hope they come to historic Ellicott City, MD, and see how NOT to go about it!
    Surely a venture capitalist would immediately envision you two making a feature film. And Opal's ant obsession would be factored in. Her every important mission - interrupted by the sight of an ant! A hilarious running gag. 8 D
    I look forward to your every next video like the next episode of some favorite TV show. I mean - you two got that kind of media appeal. Soon - that same rude lady will want your autograph. "I loved your movie and my daughter loves your cartoon!"
    Next stop - iFly? And then on to Denali? 8 D

    I'm sorry that that happened, but I figured I'd give you a different way of looking at it that might help. It's possible that those people have an invisible disability that can make them socially awkward (like autism, for example) and maybe they really were just trying to reach out with what they felt was friendliness without meaning any harm.
    I've lived as an able-bodied person for most of my life and am now disabled and in a wheelchair. Interestingly, when I go out in public (doesn't matter where), I only ever get either of two reactions:
    Sometimes, I'm invisible, which is a super-power some people would love to have, so no complaints. Other times, people help me out uninvited, like by opening a door for me or reaching something down for me or moving something out of my way or pushing my chair or paying for my items in the checkout-line unasked and without telling me. Some of those are just plain nice, others are creepy, and I really, really, really don't like it when strangers put their hands on my chair.
    For all able-bodied people reading this, please consider our chairs as extensions of ourselves. If you wouldn't reach out and touch other strangers, please don't reach out and touch our chairs.
    Anyway, keep up the great exploration of the country. You're having a wonderful adventure together and it's very generous of you to share it with us.

    • @a1nelson
      @a1nelson 5 месяцев назад

      There’s a lot of wisdom and empathy here. While I do feel that many of the people that make comments and do other crazy stuff are doing so having the opinion that disabled people are ‘less than”, or maybe even there just to be punching bags. For sure, though, there are others who genuinely want to help or just to make normal conversation but have no idea how,to do so in a respectful manner.
      One experience that seems to demonstrate the importance of perspective: a few years ago, I had just left the grocery store, had loaded my things in the car and was now dragging myself in. To me, it was just the 10,000th time I’ve done the same thing, and I don’t think I appeared to be in distress. So, I found it to be annoying, also as usual, that someone felt it was appropriate to interrupt me and ask if I needed help, following up by nearly demanding that they help me. disabled people will recognize this as something that happens all too frequently.
      What’s worse, is that on this particular day, it was sleeting out, I was getting thoroughly wet and a cold wind was blowing. it was kind of awful, and I just wanted to bring the rest of my chair into the car and get the heat turned on, the interloper would not leave the situation. Finally, although it is not my typical motive operation, I had to be stern with the person and tell them that I just didn’t have time to explain everything to them. “Pick another day to harass people!”
      Only after I calmed down a bit and warmed up, did I realize that that person was also in the freezing rain and blowing wind having less cover than I did, as I was already in the driver”s seat. Thus, a list or not, they felt it was important enough to lend helping hand that they were willing to stay at my side, taking the full brunt of that terrible weather.
      Once I had calmed down a bit and warmed up, I reflected of the situation and had a minor epiphany, gaining a bit of perspective on at least some of the people that_try_ to step in. I still find their actions annoying, as they make activities of daily living unnecessarily challenging. However, I was reminded that I need to maintain some empathy of my own - perhaps even encouraging those that are trying to do the right thing, rather then silently or openly criticizing their actions. Maybe, with a bit of education, some of those people could actually become real allies to others they encounter in the future.
      Also, +1 for considering neurodivergence. Cultural factor can also be in play. Some cultures are taught that it’s essential to help family and community - and that’s not exactly something we should rally against. In the end, these interactions can sometimes be more nuanced than they at first seem.

    • @Elliria_home
      @Elliria_home 5 месяцев назад +1

      Yeah, the differences between us can cause an odd divide that's trickier for some folks to cross than for others. It's often easier for us, because we wear both hats, but they may only have experience with one.
      It's also possible that us being seen as "less than" by some folks may make us seem safer to approach than their peers, which may explain why, when Nicholette just wanted to enjoy her time outdoors with her little family just like anybody else, she was suddenly called upon to hop back into the active role of a disabled person by other folks.
      It may also make us seem like handy recipients for what others feel are acts of kindness even if we perceive them differently, as in your scenario in the storm that ended up with an unacceptable line being crossed by the stranger not accepting your initial "no" when it really should have been the natural end of the interaction. I like your thought about how to handle such situations in the future to help folks like that to become potential allies for others.
      I hadn't even considered cultural differences, but you're right that those can also play a role, with the potential for misunderstanding or misinterpretation. Then there's also the common parental strategy of teaching children not to look at people who are different or talk to people about their differences. Those kinds of teachings not only stifle children, but can stay with them through adulthood, which is a shame.
      I agree that these interactions can be more nuanced than they seem to be at first. It can't hurt for us to try to remember that there may be a whole lot going on inside of another person that we may not be aware of and that they may be equally unaware of a lot that's going on inside of us.

    what a stupid comment from that woman. It would be different if you had said something like I wish I could go up to that area and she said If you want to go up that area I can help or something nice. Dont take it to heart there is a lot of people with no common sense.

      There’s a place where you can read the transcript that goes with your video. I was curious how they would put his beat boxing skills into actual words. They didn’t even bother trying! 😂 😂😂 😂

    Adults should know better. When my children where young, there was a man who was missing an arm and they kept asking me what happened to his arm, I said I don't know but you can go ask him. I feel that is so much better than them staring and pointing, of course the guy I was dating was mortified I did that. Well, right up to the point the elderly man said he was glad I did that, the kids found out it was a farm accident and I found out his kids grew up with my mom. Small world.

    I think it’s ridiculous. I have a scooter that I use sometimes because I can’t walk very far or for very long. That is just even worse than being rude.

    Hi Kids, just droppin' in to say good night. I'm sorry you had to deal with the inconsiderate "observer" again. Is there any point in calling people like that out in the moment (like I hope you DO say something OUT LOUD when it happens!) something like you're very aware you have different abilities and that it doesn't make you feel better to hear such comments...and you would much prefer if people would observe how well you're handling life in spite of it all?....some remark to smack'em up alongside the head for their general rudeness? Ok, gotta try to get to bed earlier tonight - no bugs Op :) Nighty night and love to All3ofU! xo, b
