Honestly I think the story of the story being at the exact same campfire as the original story adds to the joke rather than detracts or makes it confusing by any means. Especially since it's an entirely different cast and the story storyteller immediately says "and that's the story of Kevin's terrible story" or whatever the exact phrase is.
