      I work with low income students, and one of the things I tell them to help them build financial literacy skills is to watch who they watch online. I encourage them to notice if the people they follow help them appreciate what they already have or cause them to want something more. I'm going to ask them next week what they think of the de-influencing trend.

    When I hear people saying the minimalism "trend" is fading. I think a lot of that is people who were following minimalism as a decor trend. I doubt that people who became minimalists, as in changed their lifestyle, are now thinking, "We'll, what's the next lifestyle trend I can follow?"

    • @mwebb3014
      @mwebb3014 Год назад +52

      I completely agree!! Minimalism as a lifestyle is not a trend. My guess is that many people who used it as a decorating aesthetic probably kept much of their possessions in bins and have since dug it all back out for their next decor trend.

    I know this may sound extreme but minimalism is saving lives, I suffer my anxiety disorder and having enough and having a clean, open space is necessary for my life and I’m sure many others. I value having a my personal space this way. You’re doing a good job, people are still interested in a scaling down and finding joy with the things they have.

First was Function of Beauty personalised shampoo & conditioner (influenced by Zoe Sugg) and second was Tropeaka vegan protein powder (influenced by Sarah's Day). Both items were terrible and I've never been influenced to buy anything again. I prefer to go off recommendations from friends who absolutely love a product and aren't being paid to "sell" it to me.

That's my minimalist goal and you have helped me get there.

  • @ToriKlassen1

    Thank you for your honest videos. Yours is pretty much the only one I watch all the time. My minimalism journey has been in fits and starts, and it’s taking a while, but I’m getting there. It really started over ten years ago when my mother’s husband passed away and my siblings and I spent a week getting rid of the stuff she had hoarded (with him) over the years. (Like a storage rental full of unopened packages from the shopping channel …) I decided I didn’t want to make my children go through the agonizing task of having to get rid of my stuff after I pass away. So I’m deliberately reducing the stuff I own. It’s taken years, but I’m getting there. By the time I leave this earth, they’ll have nothing but a pick-up truck’s worth of quality used goods to take to charity. That’s the goal anyway.

    the crazy thing is some items I wanted for YEARS (for example roller skates) but when I got them I still lost interest fast 😅 somehow I was much more excited anticipating getting the item than when I actually got it. This has lead me to now creating "reward" lists for achieving certain things in my life where I can then buy an item I have wanted for a while. I am generally excited to get that item but by the time the achievement rolls around I usually don't even want it anymore and I saved space and money while still feeling like I allowed myself to purchase the item - I never said I couldn't get it I just made myself wait until I didn't want to 😂

    It started with my reaction to “vlogmas” that annual deluge that RUclips pushes its creators to pump out but I soon saw that it helped me year round.
    Now I put a single video in there, saved as a bookmark for that channel and unsubscribe for a while. When I miss them I don’t have to search all over YT for a half forgotten name. I go into my playlist and resubscribe temporarily. Rinse and repeat.

    So interesting that you brought this topic up - I don't think I'm anyone's target audience so I don't think influencing has crossed my radar much, but I was doing some searching for cleaning tools and started noticing that a lot of a certain style of accounts were using the same cleaning products and tools - like EVERYONE was using the EXACT same stuff. But then when I looked at accounts that were by professional cleaners, they were using much more simple and non branded products for their videos. It made me think that awareness of the motivation behind the account (are they there to make a pretty video with a lot of "#satisfying" content or are thy there to show you how they clean a dirty bathtub) is helpful in being discerning about which recommendations to take or not.

    I unfortunately Got rid of many minimalism Channels in RUclips just because they started sponsoring stuff I dont need, and doing exactly the opposite of what minimalism tries to achieve: the consumerism.
    And trying to make Money Out of their cool sponsorhips ....It Feels so wrong to me, and i am glad you dont get attracted by this moneymaking buy strategies....

    It was a miracle to come across a channel like this. Instagram is like eating too many chocolate bars in one sitting! I deleted all social media platforms, and started watching your playlist for minimalism + saving money 💰 most of the time, I’ve started buying from Poshmark .. I’m going to do a no spend challenge

    I also was very confused by these products, but realistically, I haven’t been motivated to buy something because someone else had it since I was about 14. I guess I’m a bit of an odd duck I would only buy stuff, too much of it that’s true , that I found interesting and worthwhile. Now I know I don’t have to keep anything that was interesting and useful during a season of my life but now isn’t. so now my space is much easier to work in and I know everything I own.

    I wait MONTHS and MONTHS before I buy things a lot of the time!!! I've actually wanted the Dyson Airwrap for years and am thinking of putting money aside because I've wanted it for at least 5 years now and I think it might be a useful purchase. However I'm waiting for my regular blowdryer to break first!

    The "wait and see" approach never works for me - I just obsess over the thing until I finally buy it. However, making myself wait 30 days might be worthwhile- if nothing else it might space out my unnecessary purchases and lead to fewer in total.

      My sister did a lot of research into finding happiness a few years ago (research shows that regret is the emotion statistically most related to shopping). One of the practices she read about for avoiding buying an item you are trying to resist was to pick up the item (if it's online, maybe touch the picture on the screen) and hold it and really think honestly and consciously about the item, where it will be stored, how many other items like it that you have. It's almost like a personal conversation with the item. You go through the full list in your head, then remind yourself that you don't need the item, you likely won't actually use it, and that if you buy the item, you won't feel happy; you'll feel regretful.

    • @olivemaycards
      @olivemaycards Год назад

      I used to have the same problem, stewing over the things on my wait list. But then I found that if I saved the item to a Pinterest wishlist board (that I never looked at) it tricked my brain into feeling as if I had bought the thing and then I would forget about it almost completely! I wouldn’t even register that the “purchase” never arrived because I didn’t actually need it or want it that much. It would break that tension of anticipation that you get when you’re deciding whether to buy. Apparently the happiest part of buying something is the moment after you decide to buy it but before handing over the money. It’s all downhill after because now you’re stuck with the reality of the item, not just the imagined potential.

    Loved this👍....I'm the same as you. I've never heard of these products either🤣..but I am not on Instagram or Tick Tock, I don't "surf shop" and do not do "online shopping"...and I have been minimalistic for years.
    I recently heard about this "new trend for advertising" from another you tuber who said she wouldn't do it! and said the "de-influencing" gets them more money.. ie because tell you not to buy a product from a competitors company (ie trash that product), but then tell you to buy product X from company Y who they get paid by to promote it.
    I find the whole thing just ridiculous and crazy.. its shocking to think people waste their life on brainless tick tock stuff...and then are even more stupid to go and buy all the stuff they do not need!
    Ps minimalism ONLY became "a trend" after the Americans discovered there is an alternative way to live other than consumerism and maximalism after the Americans discovered the "Con Marie" method.
    But the truth is minimalism has been around forever to differing degrees, in different cultures, for different reasons... it is not a new "way of living" concept at all 🙄.

    I think it's also helpful to remember - if you find yourself easily tempted by these trends - that there will ALWAYS be the next big thing. In 2016 with the height of the beauty community, it was makeup - now, it's skin care. A couple of years ago, everyone went crazy over hydroflasks and hoarded them in every size and colour, now it's stanley cups, and so on and so on...
    It's always a learning curve to try and find what works best for you, and there is nothing wrong with wanting to check out a couple of reviews. Just try to remember that different things have different values for different people - what the influencer you enjoy watching places high value on today, might be gone by tomorrow. That shouldn’t be the case for you. Enjoy the things that work for you, and do so unapologetically 🖤

    De-influencing is just another way to solidify the mindset that which Things you have matters, or which Things you eschew matters. It's just another way to put Stuff at the center of life.
    I so appreciate watching your videos knowing I am safe from the sponsorship push. No matter how fair we want to be, as soon as we become invested financially we really can't see completely straight. That's not to say "commercials" are bad, just that they always need to be taken with a grain of salt, just like always.

    haha I love your humor in this video by the way.
    Oh my goodness, one of your skirts (a boho one) I saw in your closet is one I used to have (but I wore it so much it ripped haha). Or at least the same pattern that was on my skirt was used on the skirt you had...Never seen someone with something like it so I smiled!
    Anyway, I am in agreement with you: buy based off of your interests. I have always been that type, but I am also one who is extremely conscious of where my items come from.
    I think it is good that you don't promote things you don't need. I appreciate that a lot. When I was a vintage fashion blogger (who did the one in one out type of thing while doing it since I was a minimalist for a few years already then), I was offered SO MANY things to promote. I said "no" to a lot of it, but "yes" to things that I actually still use (13 years later).

    I need to de-influence myself from listening to influencers who tell me what shoes to wear with what pants with what shirts. I already do not follow them, but I need to stop taking what they say as gospel because all it does is make me discontent with my clothes. I will be wearing my flare jeans with my oversized sweaters with my Ugg boots because I like it and I’m warm in -30 degree weather (Fahrenheit).
