The USCSS Nostromo was actually designed to be and probably equipped with 2 lifeboats, Narcissus and Salmacis. But latter wasn't operational at the time of events.

@@ProjectACHERON i thought the nostromo carried two, one of which couldnt fly.
A self-destruct mechanism is more like a doomsday device. I think today they should integrate something like quarantine mechanisms rathen than a hey, this billion dollar space ship shouldnt have come with such a thing built in unless there was a good reason.
I think it's more for "hey this thing is going to crash this thing into that giant space station with countless innocents, let's hit the self destruct and leave on the shuttle so we don't cause space 9/11."
