    That song just stops you dead in your tracks. Imagine starting a rebellion you know you can’t win, and you know they will take your life for doing so, just to make the people of Ireland stand up and fight after your gone. Very powerful. Thank you.

      That's completely wrong, it was later called a blood sacrifice, for propaganda by the Free State, but it was a 100% serious attempt to overthrow the British out of Ireland, as the original plan was for 15,000 Irish Volunteers to rise up with 20,000 guns from the Aud ship.
      Yes, the leaders of the uprising were "idealists" and "dreamers," but they organized and planned the rebellion on the assumption there was a possibility it could be victorious. The Irish Republic would not only be proclaimed but "enthroned" also Pearse was quoted as saying at his court-martial.

    • @raybrennan7851
      @raybrennan7851 2 года назад +5

      @@davebrayfb I completely disagree with that comment. In planning it was a serious attempt to overthrow the British government. But days before the Rising they knew they hadn’t got enough weapons. And was short of volunteers. I’m talking about the initial start of the Rising in Dublin. taking the building’s and holding them. They went into those buildings knowing they would probably not be coming out. If that’s not a sacrifice then what is ?. Nothing to do with what happened afterwards. ( blood sacrifice)

    • @davebrayfb
      @davebrayfb 2 года назад +3

      @@raybrennan7851 James Connolly for example was a Socialist Republican, he was willing to die, yes, but was not on a suicide or blood sacrifice mission. He was hoping the rebellion in Dublin would spark other rebellions in Europe & as he said "turn Europe red with revolution". They were hoping the Dublin action would spur on the 12,000 other Volunteers around the to country rise as well, but only about another 1,500 did, so like at Enniscorthy where they took over an RIC barracks & captured a number of rifles & revolvers, which was pretty much how the Volunteers from fighting the guerrilla war of 1919 - 21 armed themselves, by raiding RIC & Army barracks & captured rifles & ammo of soldiers, Tans, Auxies & RIC that they killed.

    • @skippership7
      @skippership7 Год назад

      @@raybrennan7851 I agree, it was indeed a serious attempt to get "The British Empire" out of Ireland however once the Aud with the arms had been caught by HMS Bluebell and Spindler had scuttled her off the coast of Kerry and Eoin MacNeill then "cancelled manurers" and stood the IV down, it was from that point onwards always going to be a blood sacrifice and Pearse knew that and I suspect most of the IRB knew that as well.
      You will always hear historians say that the Rising "took the British completely by surprise" but this is of course nonsense. Balfour through the Castle's spies and informers had already informed the British Cabinet that the Rising was going to start on "Easter Monday" (not Easter Sunday) and as FLOA Balfour had already starting assembling troops in Britain to ship into Ireland.
      The point is that the British Government "Let" the Rising go ahead so they could justify the plot they had hatched in Oct 1915 to assassinate members of the IV and IRB / trouble makers, but called that plot off at the time as it was deemed not viable. So, the Rising starts "what a perfect excuse for the British" and hence why Order 256 was implemented so quickly to make sure these "troublemakers" were "legally executed" (indeed as 79 rebels in total were sentenced to be executed - excluding Casement of course).
      These debates (if anyone bothers to read them) are all clearly detailed in Hansard HofC papers for May 1916 and Irish MP John Dillon's wonderful verbal mauling of Asquith in his rivers of bloody speech in the HofC. Huge credit should be given to John Dillon for saving so many Rebel lives and getting Asquith to put a stop to Maxwell's blood lust on 11 May 1916, but too late to save Mac Diarmada and Connolly on 12 May as they were both signatories of course. And before you ask about Thomas Kent, yes his execution was illegal as he was charged and from guilty of the wrong crime, as conceded by Asquith in those same debates.

    My Grandmother was born in Donegal in 1901 and came to America in 1926, so she lived through all of this. She didn’t talk about it often because she didn’t like talking about the past, but she did tell me a little about the Black and Tans. She told me how they would show up at the weekend dances to “inspect” the goings on. Everyone turned their backs on the soldiers and you didn’t dare talk to them. But she did say once that they (the Black and Tans) were just lonely, young men, far from home looking for a girl to talk to on a Saturday night. I know the stories about them are much worse, but that was her memory. She was close to 100 when she said this so, I guess her memories had softened a bit.

    The Chieftains who are the band that this version is by (Sinead was one of a few guest vocalists on The Long Back Veil album, can be put with any singer and they make that singer no matter how good, immeasurably better. Martin, Seán, Matt, Paddy & Derek are some of the best musicians Ireland have produced! If my memory is serving me, the clips in the video you were using are from one of the greatest films every shot: The Wind That Shakes the Barley, its a hard watch, but probably the most historically accurate representation of that period of our history to be put on film.

      PS: There are versions of this song by the likes of the great Irish Brigade, Shebeen etc which have a slightly differing line updated somewhat: instead of "But had they died by Pearse's side. Or fought with Cathal Bruagh, Their graves we'd keep where the Fenians sleep 'Neath the shroud of the foggy dew." its "But had they died by Pearse's side, or fought with the Provo's too, Their graves we'd keep where the Fenians sleep 'Neath the shroud of the foggy dew"

    Sinead was a TRUE daughter of Eire. Plus she was a Magdalene Girl. The voice of a THOUSAND YEARS of oppression is in her voice.
