  • I've never owned a super strat or any other "shredder" style guitar. Well, untill now...
the question is, will love it or hate it? It's certainly outside of my comfort zone.

Floyds can be a nightmare, but they're great once you've got them set, and you never really have to mess with them, aside from the occasional tweak with the fine tuners. I have 2 with them, and the best advice I can give for string changes is this:
DON'T CUT THE BALL END OFF 😂😂
I leave the ball end of the strings attached, and run the strings through the tuners "backwards," and then trim the other end of the strings to length at the saddle blocks. Makes life way easier, and almost mimics locking tuners. Nice stable connection at the tuning pegs, and no need to worry about doing wraps around the post, etc. Hope this helps! 🤘🤘

I learned to play guitar on a Stella in 1963.

I need at least a modern C neck, but I don't mind the Floyd. I do like that finish!

Well it looks cool! I have three active pickup guitars. Two are Peavey Falcon Actives (Peavey's own pup). I love those--three active single coils. I also have a Peavey Twenty-three with EMGs (60&81). Those are powerful pups! I also have an Ed O'Brien Strat, which does not have active pups per se, but it has a Fernandes Sustainer at the neck, which requires juice for infinite sustain.
What do they all have in common? Battery compartments, which I detest! Thanks for the honest and thorough review, Mike.

Nice video Grumpy Mike. It was funny to see you post a Jackson video because I just bought my first Jackson today. It's a Rhoades V style. I'm like you and tend to avoid the shredder guitars but for some reason this appealed to me. Mine has passive humbuckers and a hardtail, so not quite the extreme change you're experiencing.

Nice shreddin', Mike! Lots of respect for you, stepping outside your comfort zone. I'm no shredder either, and certainly wouldn't be enthused about putting a battery in a guitar. Although I did have an experience similar to yours with slim neck/flat fretboard recently. I found a used Hagstrom Viking semihollow at GC that had a nice jazzy sound I've been searching for for years. I don't think I ever bonded with a guitar so instantly in all my life, so of course I bought it. But it had a relatively slim D shape neck and 15" radius. It's easy to play, but I just have to be careful because the tendons in my wrist will sometimes complain afterward. I think the neck shape & thickness that works best for me is the PRS pattern regular. Crazy side question: my wife and I were in Sarasota over the weekend to watch my daughter row at Nathan Benderson Park. I saw someone driving a large blue pickup on Cattlemen Rd that looked like you. I know you're in FL, but I also know that there's millions of people in FL... but was it you???

Hey Mike....I have a Pro DK2QMHT. Similar to your review model except it's a quilted maple top in Chlorine burst, maple neck and a hard tail bridge as I don't care for Floyd's and it has a JB and a 59 otherwise spec wise it's similar. It's one of my favorite guitars next to my SE 24-08 and the G&L ASAT. I think you'll enjoy it!

I must admit, I'm really surprised how much I like this guitar. It's a hell of a lot of fun to play.

If you like chunky necks and can find one, try a 70s Iceman
Different neck than the shredder ones

Hey Mike! I'm like you mostly, don't mind the thin neck and flat fretboard. I just don't feel the need for active pickups or the added complexity of a Floyd Rose bridge/locking nut. There may be some way to adjust things down so you can still palm mute comfortably, I don't know. I really do like the finish on that guitar. Can you even buy one of those without the Floyd/locking nut and active pups?

Wow! That's a great looking guitar! I have an Ibanez Fireman. It has a big 'ol chunky neck because Paul Gilbert has big hands. I have the FRM300. It has 3 Duncan mini-humbuckers. Check one out if you can.

@@grumpymikeguitar They're not inexpensive for a Chinese made guitar, but mine has excellent build quality. Perhaps you can find a mint used one if you don't want to shell out about $1k for a new one.

In the modern world of guitar 🎸 no one wants a baseball neck....it's another reason why Gibson is almost bankrupt every year. Esp has slayed Gibson for years with South Korea made single cuts with stainless steel frets and better necks. Smoother electronics at less than half the price of a Les Paul standard. I'm not bashing Gibson no....but if I was in charge of manufacturing at Gibson I'd change my entire line on single cuts because even Schecter, and Solar are killing Gibson on quality at less than half the price 👍🏻

    • @grumpymikeguitar
      @grumpymikeguitar  3 месяца назад +1

With all due respect, I know quite a lot of folks who prefer fat necks. In fact, I'm pretty sure they outnumber the thin neck crowd.
Also, ESP is a fraction of the size of Gibson. Gibson's lunch is safe. And again, with all due respect, if you were in charge of Gibson, with those ideas, I have no doubt you would indeed bankrupt them in short order.
      Gibson is doing just fine.

@@grumpymikeguitar I do hope Gibson gets back on track I still love the design and history esp with the new modern line but if you've been keeping up on Gibson Nashville yes they almost went bankrupt 4 years in a row . It's the QC ...I have no clue why but almost everyone getting a standard or modern these days are having wiring and tuning issues . The new modern with ebony is my thing and I almost ready to get one but the QC I'm nervous about. For $3500 I expect perfection nothing less . Every esp , Japan Ibanez, or Mexican Charvel I order is perfect. Gibson definitely needs new management. I'm serious look up Gibson QC issues and you will find 90 percent of there USA built axes have trouble that even Epiphone doesn't it's weird
