I tend to use live paint, but sometimes it doesn't work properly so this is a nice alternative.

Why not convert the inked drawing to a ‘live paint’ object and fill it in with one click?

I love live paint and it works in many situations. It just didn't happen to be what I was teaching in this method. It also gets laggy on more complex drawings. like with many Adobe programs there are multiple ways to achieve similar results.
