I can’t find proof of it and no other historian can prove me wrong.”
For those who are wondering what she was about to talk about potatoes and medieval history, its most probably about King friedrich II of prusia and how he made the potato popular during his reign, its a really interesting anecdote.
Is that the one where he was trying to get the people to start planting potatoes, but no one wanted them, so he had a special field of potatoes grown that only he was allowed to eat, and told the guards to do a really bad job at guarding it so people would steal and grow them "illegally"?
I believe she was going to talk about how potatoes could be credited for the rise of democracy in the west. I'm not as cute, but I'll give you the short version: See, in the middle ages, peasants gave most of the food they grew to the nobility. The land they worked wasn't their land, it was the lord's land that they were working. But they had a limited area where they were allowed to grow their own stuff. This generally meant that they had a hard time getting plentiful food, which kept them hungry and in poor health. When the potato was discovered in the Americas, suddenly it offered a much better source of nutrients that could be grown in a smaller space. The peasants got healthier, stronger, and bigger. Meanwhile, the nobles were getting fat and weak as their diets by this point had become almost entirely meat and sugar. So, potatoes weren't the _only_ factor in the changing power dynamics, but a healthier, stronger working class was one of them.
With Friendtaro into the mix, I'm just more convinced that Bae just hast multiple personality disorder and is just sitting alone in a room and letting the otehr personalities take over
I just looked it up and you’re totally right. This is honestly blowing my mind. I always sorta assumed that potatoes were native to Europe and were brought to the Americas, not the other way around.
@@captainanon6849 That tends to be the assumption because South/Central Americans had domesticated it about 8/9000 years ago but it was never spread very far until the Spanish bought it to Europe, and from there to everywhere else in the world including the more northern parts of North America like the American colonies. So everywhere else in the world received potatoes from Europeans, even if the Europeans themselves learned the cultivation from former subjects of the Inca empire. North American potatoes are almost exclusively from cultivars from Europe, as opposed to coming from nearby South America, and the wild potato plants of North America were never domesticated. Sounds solid. You can also make a fun sort of bake by doing this: Mash up some potatoes, and add a hard cheese like cheddar (about 1 cup per pound of potatoes, grated). Mix the potatoes, cheese, and some chives, salt, pepper, whatever you like. Then add a tablespoon or so of flour until you get a dough you can work with. Roll the dough into 2-inch balls, then dip in egg, then breadcrumbs. Bake at 375 for about 25 minutes, or until they're golden brown. Alternatively, you can fry them in oil. The result is very tasty!
