  • Part 2: 10 - 14 October 1973 (day 5 to day 9).
As the Israel-Palestine region once again descends into war, we look at the Yom Kippur War: a surprise attack on Israel launched almost exactly 50 years ago.
On 6 October 1973, a coalition of Arab armies led by Egypt and Syria launched a devastating surprise attack on Israel on the Jewish holy day of Yom Kippur. Launched with the aim of liberating territories occupied by Israel since the Six-Day War of 1967, the fighting soon brought about the intervention of both the United States and the Soviet Union. With both nuclear-armed superpowers supporting opposite sides in the conflict, the conflict quickly escalated from a localised clash into a Cold War flashpoint.
The second part of this series sees Israeli forces advancing all the way to the edge of Damascus. Inside the city, the cost of war on the civilian population is already being felt. Meanwhile, protestors and counter-protestors make their voices heard on the streets of London.

The Israelis were lucky that President Anwar al-Sadat stubbornly stuck to the position that not a single Egyptian unit should move in the direction of the canal... That's why there were several very large and strong fighting groups, the Egyptian army, which were forbidden , to move in the direction of the Israeli attack, otherwise, if those strong formations had moved, Israel would have been wiped out... For all time...

Really? By this time Israelis had consolidated its defence & supply lines. The invading Egyptian Third Army was totally encircled. Israeli Navy patrolling to keep the supply lines on the Mediteranean sea suffered no loss because all the missile attacks were missed against them while Egyptian Navy lost 7 missile boats & 4 torpedo boats. Israeli would not be wiped out easily.
