You can hear the hurt in Townsend's voice when he says "he's dead". Keith Moon broke quite a few hearts when he finally imploded. I really miss his playing and bravura, and can only imagine how much his band mates missed him.
Pete’s said some awful things about Keith in recent years. Verbatim it was something along the lines of it being good Keith died for the band, same with John he said a similar thing. That they was a pain to deal with and he was relieved when they were gone

I don't know that you would consider a 5000 seat Hall small but I saw them in Boston in 71 and I consider that , aside from the Stooges the greatest rock show I've ever seen!!! and I've seen a lot!
As crazy and self destructive as Keith was he was still a phenomenal drummer. Years later I listen to Who recordings and find examples of his playing that blow my mind. He was technically brilliant in his skill. He really was ahead of his time and was a trailblazer for future rock drummers. Just, in Keith's case, he probably really did literally set the trail ablaze
I cannot remember what video it was but there was a clip where they were recording their last album not long before his death and he was slightly overweight from his medication and he looks so exhausted…yet he still played with so much energy. He was sweating hard and breathing heavy…he never held back.
He was photographed the night before he died at the premiere of 'The Buddy Holly Story' film, having drinks with the McCartneys - but there's also a pic taken of him outside afterwards looking frighteningly sloshed; one eye closed and his face droopingly palsied by booze. I think next day he realised that a life without drink was a life without fun; he would no longer be able to hide the pain of being Keith (being ordinary?) by being Moon The Loon. A moment of self-doubt after his giving in to his weakness the night before, with pills to hand, becomes a permanent solution to a temporary problem.
Very true, I feel like he was also disappointed in himself for giving in after trying his hardest to get off the booze. And in a moment of deep sadness, downed the pills and never woke up. The poor soul, he tried.

Sometimes it hurts so much to watch these old clips of Keith that the pain is almost physical. You just want more life, longer life, happier life, for someone who gave us so much joy.

Been a Who fan for 50 plus years and still am. Remember the day Keith died. Our drug culture took a few of my close friends as well. Sad how we victimize ourselves by not telling and taking ahold of those we love when excess is rampant and right in front of us. Keith was 32 years old and still needed a 24/7 babysitter. Keith was lovable, but he also could have used a bit of genuine love in his life to help/enforce upon him to stop the self destruction. Lots of friends enjoyed his antics, and somehow that was more important than getting him straight. I'm sure some tried, but in Moonies case, he needed to be tied down, someone needed to tell all who associated with him to stop reinforcing his bad habits. Townsend states it clearly the reason why. Can't say anything would have worked, but I am getting a bit tired of the stories of someone who's in his thirties not being able to control himself and people finding that funning to the point of him destroying himself. Apologize for the heavy trip on this one.
What a loss to music . I remember as a 12yo hearing My Generation for the first time . What struck me most was the astonishing drumming . Drummers were supposed to be in the background keeping the beat . Keith Moon single - handedly turned drumming into an art form and made the drums as important to music as a guitarist or singer . RIP , Maestro .
As a drummer I like to think that Keith Moon's playing blurred the distinction between playing time and playing fills. A unique and revolutionary way to play. Mad brilliance.
Keith was a musical drummer. He knew when to hold the beat. His his fills really flow with the song. Although he was really busy he never got in the way. Ringo was similar but much less flamboyant. You’ll find Ringo was a huge influence on most of the next generation of drummers. Moon was a one off. Great but very hard to learn his style of player. I have never heard a Moon sound from anyone else. I love Ringo’s son Zak on drums with the Who, fantastic but you can hear he’s not trying to do Moon. No one can.
I love Moon. Some professionals call him sloppy or erratic but without him the Who couldn't recapture that great energy & creative product. No matter the drummer it just would never be the Who.
I never liked the “sloppy drummer” idea. No, he wasn’t a traditionally “good” drummer but The Who was by no means a traditional band. Their beautiful music would’ve never been the same. Kenney Jones is an awesome drummer (Ogden’s Nut Gone Flake, particularly Happiness Stan is some of the best drumming I’ve ever heard) but he doesn’t quite work for The Who. Face Dances is killer but not quite “The Who”. Keith was irreplaceable. His energy, and Pete’s genius, is what made Quadrophenia possible. I STILL hold that album to be the greatest work of music I’ve ever heard, and I listen to a ridiculous amount of music like from when I wake up till I go to sleep. Bless you and God bless the motherfucking greatest band, besides maybe the Beatles, to ever touch this planet!
i always love watching the interaction between keith and pete live. keith was usually out of control and pete would seem to spend half his time keeping an eye on keith like you'd watch a child, forcing eye contact and other gestures to keep keith focused on what they were doing, and keith was just a maniac on drums, the band could be doing a simple riff or part and keith would be going nuts... and it would always sound perfect, moon had this incrediblie symbiosis of frantic movement and timing. he looked like he was having a damn siezure and the beat and fills would be brilliant. there will never be anyone else like keith moon.
I've seen Roger speculate in recent years that he may have had Aspergers. Combine that with substance abuse and an untrained natural talent for rhythm and percussion and that's one hell of a mix. The really sad thing is that the the drug he was prescribed should never have been given to him without very strict supervision from a medical professional. If they had realised at the time how powerful that drug was he would never have been allowed to take it home with him.
Keith was born to be here for a short time. He inspired so many people while he was here. He died young and as a result became a legend. He still inspires drummers and ravers today.

In his own country journalists would take him to task for the sheer waste of loony theatrical gestures like driving his RR into a swimming pool... he could have donated it to charity, etc. While you can't deny the waste, I guess you also had to acknowledge that it was his money, if he wanted to flush it down the toilet he had a right to do it!
I think there are always brilliant, talented, gifted musicians who make a unique mark in musical history, like Pete Townshend, Roger Daltrey, John Entwistle, John Bonham. But very rarely are there phenoms in life. Mozart was a phenom. Jimmy Hendrix I guess was a phenom on electric guitar. Keith Moon was definitely a phenom on the drums. A musical-savant baby drummer who never really grew up in life. But there was never ever another a drummer like him .
Moony was very lovable and so well liked that no one ever thought to try and stop him from his excesses. He possessed talent and charm in droves and he got away with just about anything. Remember, too, that in his time (d. 1979) it was VERY uncool to tell anyone what to do about their behavior. He was the best of the best and he left us too soon.
I really liked John Entwisle and really fely badly when I heard of his death. With Keith, everyone knew it was coming. It was onlya matter of when. A great book on Keith is called "Full Moon" by Dougal Butler. It captured keith's life perfectly.
Pete - "What we want our 'fellow musicians' in life to do now is enjoy life without destroying themselves". I am fairly certain he was talking about John when he made that comment.
Keith was a lovable madcap who needed an audience and excitement in his life. That he shared his drumming talent with us made The Who extraordinary. We miss he and John dearly 🙏🤙
At least Keith "lived" life to the fullest...no regrets. I am sad he died, especially from drugs/alcohol, but in his short 32 years, he squeezed in a lot of life.
One of their best gigs 'ever' was at the Sundown Edmonton in 1973/4. Too bad this wasn't recorded. I was back & side stage with the Roadies. I will never forget the raw power of this band - at their best !
Playing drums for 5+ hours a day as a kid sounds like the hyper focus of ADHD too. If Keith had Autism as Pete suggested, plus ADHD, the drumming probably saved his sanity until self medicating won.
The funny thing is that he didn't die in some crazy stunt gone wrong. He took too many pills to, believe it or not, stop his alcoholism. I'm guessing Moony knew it was time to slow down, and he tried to as fast as he could, so he could quickly start up again. Bless him and rest in peace, along with John.

Very true. He played from the absolute centre of his soul. He punctuated Rogers vocals. Made space for Petes guitar when needed. Locked solid with The Ox. In a league of his own. Bonham had groove AND power. Charlie just hit it on the money every time.... still does. Ringo was Ringo. Mick Fleetwood was very underrated for groove and space. See the pattern emerging? A neighbor once said Moon was very precise, and it puzzled me at the time. But I came to understand his dynamics *were* very precise. The way he could escalate a fill, or direct a song was like none other I've ever heard. It has become the model for my own drumming, but bandmates often want it toned down a bit (laughing).
Keith Moon was ABSOLUTELY ONE OF A KIND. But, as it turned out, he wasn't INDESTRUCTIBLE. WHAT A LOSS FOR EVERYONE, US, HIS FAMILY, THE BAND AND ESPECIALLY FOR KEITH MOON. REST IN PEACE BROTHER.
The tragedy in Lynyrd Skinner's case is that the pilots ran the plane out of fuel.Its a bit more complicated as to how that happened but the short truth is they ran the plane out of fuel.Very sad.
Sadly, I'm speaking as one who also has mental health issues. I think you'll find that a lot of people feel that Keith was at the very least bipolar, and there is also mention of borderline personality disorder. Kim tried to get him to see a psychiatrist because of to his problems. Alcohol and drugs obviously made him worse, but there were definitely problems before that.. I don't mean to be contentious. I still love and respect Keith. Maybe more so, it's very hard to live with.
As a player in many unknown and forgotten rock bands, I attempt to imagine being in a band with Keith Moon, or one with Entwistle, or one with Towshend. With all three of them I can't even grasp... I would have to ask Roger Daltry to explain that.
@905Alive - yeah, she freaked out apparently and had to be sedated. I can't imagine how she must have felt. She loved Keith. Her and Kim were the only women by all accounts who ever really loved Keith for himself, flaws and all. Tony Fletcher's book is extraordinary and gives a good insight to Keith. I agree completely with Tony that Keith had terrible mental health problems. Such a shame, he could probably be helped today were he still alive. Rest in Peace Keith, dear boy x

I don't know....I saw them a few weeks before John kicked it, and it's the best concert I have ever been to. As Roger says, bringing Ringo's son into the band changed everything.
I understand Zep not play throughout the rest of their hay-day, but as of 2020. It's been 20 years. I'm trivializing Robert Plant's pain on lose John Bonham, but these guys are close (if not already) to their twilight. One more tour in their 70's could and should be their last hurrah.
He tied his drums to a post so they wouldn't go away, classic. I'm a drummer and when I play I tend to push outward on the bass drum instead of coming down on it so there was a time I used to tie a rope around the base of the drum stool and to either side of the bass drum so they drums wouldn't go away either so I totally get that. It's nice to know one was in good company even if I didn't know it at the time.
This evening I crawled into bed and decided to watch a little YT before falling asleep. I watched a clip of folks talking about Keith and then I watched another and another one after that. Before too long i realized I i had been lying in bed for 2 hours just watching people telling Keith Moon stories
@@melvingardner5282 Keith could keep time (as any half way decent drummer should) but then everything else about his playing style had no qualities that the vast majority of drummers around the world would call "good drumming". Even Pete said he wasnt a very good drummer. However, just because he didnt play "pretty", "tight", or "conventional" doesnt mean he was bad. He was unique and had a very unorthodox style which led to a completely one of a kind sound which, in my opinion, is the most important part about being a drummer. I like listening to keith, I just definitely don’t think hes even close to being the "greatest drummer ever. Hands down"
I think that's the element that is missing after Keith died: the aggression. They just were not the same band afterwards and their music never rose to the heights as in their glory days. I rank Quadrophenia as among my favourite albums, as well as those few that I enjoy every single track. I think it's vastly better than Tommy. We can only imagine the music they would have made had Moonie overcame his addictions and self destructive streak. Our loss.

In the 70's the lucky few who made it big had loads of money, loads of women, loads of drugs and no exposure to the real world. Keith Moon's is a cautionary tale of the dangers of naive excess.

Yeah, but John didn't "really" die due to drugs. He died due to a heart attack. 95% of people could've snorted the small amount of cocaine he did and would have survived, but not when you are taking meds to keep your heart ticking. I do not advocate the use of cocaine, but I 100% believe that most people who die from it like James Honeymoon Scott from The Pretenders or basketball star Len Bias do so due to any underlying medical condition. Mick Fleetwood said he used cocaine all day and night for 25 straight years and had no problems except financial issues. If he can do that, one sniff of coke is not going to kill a musician unless something else is going on, and based on all the evidence that exists, John didn't go on some drug binge in Vegas. He shouldn't have been using coke with the heart issue. Just like someone should not be drinking Wild Turkey when they possess cirrhosis of the liver due to non-alcoholic reasons ( for instance, the usage of certain bi polar meds that devastated the liver of a buddy of mine.).

I love Moon. Some professionals call him sloppy or erratic but without him the Who couldn't recapture that great energy & creative product. No matter the drummer it just would never be the Who.
His dynamics were spot on, like no other. Nobody could *drive* a song like Moonie.
I never liked the “sloppy drummer” idea. No, he wasn’t a traditionally “good” drummer but The Who was by no means a traditional band. Their beautiful music would’ve never been the same. Kenney Jones is an awesome drummer (Ogden’s Nut Gone Flake, particularly Happiness Stan is some of the best drumming I’ve ever heard) but he doesn’t quite work for The Who. Face Dances is killer but not quite “The Who”. Keith was irreplaceable. His energy, and Pete’s genius, is what made Quadrophenia possible. I STILL hold that album to be the greatest work of music I’ve ever heard, and I listen to a ridiculous amount of music like from when I wake up till I go to sleep. Bless you and God bless the motherfucking greatest band, besides maybe the Beatles, to ever touch this planet!

i always love watching the interaction between keith and pete live. keith was usually out of control and pete would seem to spend half his time keeping an eye on keith like you'd watch a child, forcing eye contact and other gestures to keep keith focused on what they were doing, and keith was just a maniac on drums, the band could be doing a simple riff or part and keith would be going nuts... and it would always sound perfect, moon had this incrediblie symbiosis of frantic movement and timing. he looked like he was having a damn siezure and the beat and fills would be brilliant. there will never be anyone else like keith moon.
I've seen Roger speculate in recent years that he may have had Aspergers. Combine that with substance abuse and an untrained natural talent for rhythm and percussion and that's one hell of a mix. The really sad thing is that the the drug he was prescribed should never have been given to him without very strict supervision from a medical professional. If they had realised at the time how powerful that drug was he would never have been allowed to take it home with him.

Keith was born to be here for a short time. He inspired so many people while he was here. He died young and as a result became a legend. He still inspires drummers and ravers today.

I think there are always brilliant, talented, gifted musicians who make a unique mark in musical history, like Pete Townshend, Roger Daltrey, John Entwistle, John Bonham. But very rarely are there phenoms in life. Mozart was a phenom. Jimmy Hendrix I guess was a phenom on electric guitar. Keith Moon was definitely a phenom on the drums. A musical-savant baby drummer who never really grew up in life. But there was never ever another a drummer like him .
Moony was very lovable and so well liked that no one ever thought to try and stop him from his excesses. He possessed talent and charm in droves and he got away with just about anything. Remember, too, that in his time (d. 1979) it was VERY uncool to tell anyone what to do about their behavior. He was the best of the best and he left us too soon.
He died in 1979, correcting my error of 1978.

I really liked John Entwisle and really fely badly when I heard of his death. With Keith, everyone knew it was coming. It was onlya matter of when. A great book on Keith is called "Full Moon" by Dougal Butler. It captured keith's life perfectly.

At least Keith "lived" life to the fullest...no regrets. I am sad he died, especially from drugs/alcohol, but in his short 32 years, he squeezed in a lot of life.
One of their best gigs 'ever' was at the Sundown Edmonton in 1973/4. Too bad this wasn't recorded. I was back & side stage with the Roadies. I will never forget the raw power of this band - at their best !

Playing drums for 5+ hours a day as a kid sounds like the hyper focus of ADHD too. If Keith had Autism as Pete suggested, plus ADHD, the drumming probably saved his sanity until self medicating won.
The funny thing is that he didn't die in some crazy stunt gone wrong. He took too many pills to, believe it or not, stop his alcoholism. I'm guessing Moony knew it was time to slow down, and he tried to as fast as he could, so he could quickly start up again. Bless him and rest in peace, along with John.

Very true. He played from the absolute centre of his soul. He punctuated Rogers vocals. Made space for Petes guitar when needed. Locked solid with The Ox. In a league of his own. Bonham had groove AND power. Charlie just hit it on the money every time.... still does. Ringo was Ringo. Mick Fleetwood was very underrated for groove and space. See the pattern emerging? All great drummers show their character. 🎶 (no emoge for a drum, why is that??!!) Peace.

The original idea for "Yellowbeard" came from Keith Moon, drummer for "The Who," who also happened to be a huge Python fan and close friend of Graham Chapman. Although involved in the early conceptual stages of "Yellowbeard," Keith died on September 7, 1978 from a drug overdose.
He was, in fact, set to do some acting in Monty Python's "Life of Brian," which would begin filming nine days after his death.

A neighbor once said Moon was very precise, and it puzzled me at the time. But I came to understand his dynamics *were* very precise. The way he could escalate a fill, or direct a song was like none other I've ever heard.
It has become the model for my own drumming, but bandmates often want it toned down a bit (laughing).
Keith Moon was ABSOLUTELY ONE OF A KIND. But, as it turned out, he wasn't INDESTRUCTIBLE. WHAT A LOSS FOR EVERYONE, US, HIS FAMILY, THE BAND AND ESPECIALLY FOR KEITH MOON.

Keith Moon had a lot of personality issues, but he was one hell of a drummer. I was lucky enough to see him play live.
Saw them early 70s a few times,best shows ever and Moon himself was worth the price of admission!!
I don’t know that you can separate the personality issues from his drumming. I think they were intertwined.
Sadly, I'm speaking as one who also has mental health issues. I think you'll find that a lot of people feel that Keith was at the very least bipolar, and there is also mention of borderline personality disorder.
Kim tried to get him to see a psychiatrist because of to his problems. Alcohol and drugs obviously made him worse, but there were definitely problems before that..
I don't mean to be contentious. I still love and respect Keith. Maybe more so, it's very hard to live with.
As a player in many unknown and forgotten rock bands, I attempt to imagine being in a band with Keith Moon, or one with Entwistle, or one with Towshend. With all three of them I can't even grasp... I would have to ask Roger Daltry to explain that.
@905Alive - yeah, she freaked out apparently and had to be sedated. I can't imagine how she must have felt. She loved Keith. Her and Kim were the only women by all accounts who ever really loved Keith for himself, flaws and all.
Tony Fletcher's book is extraordinary and gives a good insight to Keith. I agree completely with Tony that Keith had terrible mental health problems. Such a shame, he could probably be helped today were he still alive. Rest in Peace Keith, dear boy x

I don't know....I saw them a few weeks before John kicked it, and it's the best concert I have ever been to. As Roger says, bringing Ringo's son into the band changed everything.
I understand Zep not play throughout the rest of their hay-day, but as of 2020. It's been 20 years. I'm trivializing Robert Plant's pain on lose John Bonham, but these guys are close (if not already) to their twilight. One more tour in their 70's could and should be their last hurrah.

I'm a drummer and when I play I tend to push outward on the bass drum instead of coming down on it so there was a time I used to tie a rope around the base of the drum stool and to either side of the bass drum so they drums wouldn't go away either so I totally get that. It's nice to know one was in good company even if I didn't know it at the time.

This evening I crawled into bed and decided to watch a little YT before falling asleep. I watched a clip of folks talking about Keith and then I watched another and another one after that. Before too long i realized I i had been lying in bed for 2 hours just watching people telling Keith Moon stories

@@melvingardner5282 Keith could keep time (as any half way decent drummer should) but then everything else about his playing style had no qualities that the vast majority of drummers around the world would call "good drumming". Even Pete said he wasnt a very good drummer. However, just because he didnt play "pretty", "tight", or "conventional" doesnt mean he was bad. He was unique and had a very unorthodox style which led to a completely one of a kind sound which, in my opinion, is the most important part about being a drummer. I like listening to keith, I just definitely don’t think hes even close to being the "greatest drummer ever. Hands down"

I think that's the element that is missing after Keith died: the aggression. They just were not the same band afterwards and their music never rose to the heights as in their glory days. I rank Quadrophenia as among my favourite albums, as well as those few that I enjoy every single track. I think it's vastly better than Tommy. We can only imagine the music they would have made had Moonie overcame his addictions and self destructive streak. Our loss.
Agree about Quadrophenia being better than Tommy. It’s a more mature album, and it showcases Townshend’s writing at its finest.

In the 70's the lucky few who made it big had loads of money, loads of women, loads of drugs and no exposure to the real world. Keith Moon's is a cautionary tale of the dangers of naive excess.

Ironic how Pete talks about Keith dying from drugs, and fellow musicians to just enjoy their lives............and then years later.....John.....ugh............
Yeah, but John didn't "really" die due to drugs. He died due to a heart attack. 95% of people could've snorted the small amount of cocaine he did and would have survived, but not when you are taking meds to keep your heart ticking. I do not advocate the use of cocaine, but I 100% believe that most people who die from it like James Honeymoon Scott from The Pretenders or basketball star Len Bias do so due to any underlying medical condition. Mick Fleetwood said he used cocaine all day and night for 25 straight years and had no problems except financial issues. If he can do that, one sniff of coke is not going to kill a musician unless something else is going on, and based on all the evidence that exists, John didn't go on some drug binge in Vegas. He shouldn't have been using coke with the heart issue. Just like someone should not be drinking Wild Turkey when they possess cirrhosis of the liver due to non-alcoholic reasons ( for instance, the usage of certain bi polar meds that devastated the liver of a buddy of mine.).
