- Mercedes were 1-2 - Sir Lewis Hamilton ahead of George Russell - after the first day of practice for the Bahrain GP - but several of the leading runners did not record serious times on the soft Pirellis. So how is it shaping-up? Peter Windsor looks at the long runs in both FP1 and FP2 ; looks at a driver comparison through the famous T9/T10 section; and, for fun, details the practice start of Charles Leclerc in the new Ferrari SF-24.

Peter, please, please, please, keep breaking down the different driving styles in corners. This is the most interesting and exciting information, as I've never raced a car before. However, it just shows the subtly of Max vs. Lando and the beauty in the different driving styles.
Not sure if i fully trust what he is saying just based on minimum speeds. Lando could have braked earlier and got his braking done quicker which allows him to accelerate earlier and get to a higher speed which is important for the next straight. But i'm just a random internet commentator so i wouldn't trust me either.
Do you do any sim racing? It's probably the closest that any of us will get to real racing.
Martin was there on the back end of the track. The wind looked wild!
@@ajaxwalkerthis is true, some of his analysis don’t add up. He states Lewis is an easy and early braker to settle the car. Thing is almost everyone else, including some of Lewis’ former teammates, have said he’s a hard and late braker. Lewis doesn’t get out braked very often. I’m beginning to think he does it to try and distinguish Lewis from other champions like Schumi, Senna, etc. who were aggressive and very late brakers.
“…the closest ANY of us….” That should read SOME, because some of us here have actually raced.😉
LOVE those long run time sheets! This is probably the most valuable information to get out of practice, so thank you so much for putting it together! Along with your insights as well of course! 😄🔥♥️
Still don’t understand they don’t have a long run graphic In the app.
Only 1:10 minutes before mentioning abudhabi ‘21 😄

Let Peter cook bro!
On the Long Run Ferrari was using 2 to 3 laps older tires than the other drivers and still put in very good laps.
And so it begins. Longest season ever is too long but I’m happy that it means more vids from Peter!
Abu Dhabi 21 It was the greatest day ever
Agreed!!!!! Well said
Let's go. Hope for a competitive week.
I still think that Las Vegas should build a proper race track out in the Desert. One that is many miles long and could be used as a test track for all the manufacturers. Something like the Nürburg Ring in Germany.
For the money they spent, they could have built Suzuka in the desert, and had money left over for the track you want.
Nürburg Ring. Nowhere near Nuremberg.
@@hanskuijsten2380 Nordschleife ...not Nuremberg...and it's Nurburgring, not Nurburg Ring, and it's located in Nurburg.
There is one. An Indy Car / NASCAR oval.😅
@@PeterKKraus I'm thinking a road course, with hills and lefts and rights. Some straightaways and sweeping and sharp curves.
Great video as always, Peter! Looking forward to another year of coverage on each race weekend :)
Honestly Peter, your analysis is always the best! Keep making your channel more appealing to others because the content is unmatched.
I really think Oscar piastri is really going to put huge pressure on lando this season he seems like a extremely calm guy whilst in the car.
Yea the opposite of Lando.
Most comprehensive look at where everyone is at, thanks for the insight Peter!
Love these vids. Really insightful.
Great insights as always Peter, love the inclusion of telemetry and the inferences drawn from it 👌👍
“With good management there (HAAS) now” That’s a burn!
Windsor was very skeptical about Freddie Vassure when he was at Sauber. But now hes so great bc he went to Ferrari and LH is going there
He said good management technically.... Meaning Komatso is a Engineer...... Don't be a Doom prophet!!
Love going inside the numbers with you Peter. Your data analysis is superb
Mate, this was perfect!!! Ty for the content 🇧🇷
Max is still faster with the long run. So, qualifying will be close, but the race pace of the RB20 is still much higher than all.
The differences aren't that big, Max will not be 'much faster' differences between Max and the competition in the tenths. And don't forget to take Perez'times into account when talking about the Red Bull pace. If you do that the difference als almost completely gone.
If Perez's laptimes are relevant then no one would be calling the RB19 "the most dominant car ever".
Thanks for the long Run Analysis
Excellent report. Thanks.
The long run data - SO TELLING...Saturday will be a very competitive day
That is why i watch this, and also because he explains it good.
my expectation is that Max puts it on the front row, then either he leads first lap then just coasts to victory (15-20s lead) or doesnt lead and ends up winning by 10-15s after overtaking for P1 around lap 5-10.
If there are SC it will be different of course.
What an analysis. You just made my morning with this
It didn’t feel like F1 was truly back until I saw this video posted❤
This as always was my first stop after watching FP1-2 on delay. If you were looking for some indication of where everyone stands right now, PW's data is the best you're going to get. Merc and Ferrari last year led a lot of practice sessions, which didn't translate to wins, looking forward to Quali and the race.
Just found the channel wow very interesting and in depth thanks it will help my betting 😊
Big surprise with the Merc. Thought it would be much slower for sure BUT ... the car does have 2 outstanding Drivers. I credit the Drivers with this chassis actually going so fast.
YES you uploaded
Great analysis
Dankie🙏🏿
Perfect timing
Fernando had a lockup on Lap 6 of his fp2 long run, Peter, at Turn 8. After that, he couldn't drive any more like before. Everyone are very close, it's gonna be interesting
Wow, Peter's analysis is just stunning. Even I as a layperson can understand a little bit what he is talking about, it's so fascinating. The last part especially was so interesting. Max is a short corner driver but yet he can adapt to making wide corners where necessary, so interesting.
Great content as always but had to lol at the comments about back in Abu Dhabi 2021. It'll be 2050 and we'll still be able to find the Brits by who still cries about that.
So much to digest I had to watch this twice
As always, mind boggling detail
Count me in! 😊
Peter's breakdown is as good as it gets. 👌
My prediction is that Merc will be faster on Saturdays over the course of the season. It looks like RB are still much faster on race pace than everyone else BUT I don't see them running away with it in any sort of similar way to last season. I actually predicted that Merc might be on pole this weekend, though that's probably a bit ambitious. Either way I think it will be a more gripping watch this season.
The last few lines about mid corners and corner entry is the difference between a champion and the rest
This was quality
Yet again Thank You Peter for the clear data driven analysis of what just happened. So much more informative than Sky’s (my only option) showbiz talking heads approach. The real data of Charles’ Start was seen for the first time. Great!
In slow out fast, I'd take 20km/h advantage on corner exit going into a straight over a slightly higher minimum speed at apex. That 20km/h is not just the tyre, it's a straighter and more linear exit line
Uhhm that's on different tires..... Meaning if Max was on softs he would Destroy Lando in that corner as he equiled him on mediums......
@@samwlloyd what's the point having +0.1 in that corner to lose -0.3 on the straight?
Peter, I would suggest Max's speed through turns 9 & 10 would also highlight the RB20's rear end stability and efficiency with its down force. Not taking anything away from Max because you still have to smooth everything out, but this is the genius of Newey & let us not forget the experience they had with Vettel and the exhaust blown diffuser era around 2011. The biggest difference here is Max is far more precise and balanced on the front end (like Kimi) also that he can carry his speed more comfortably through the apex.
Best F1 content by far!
Hello Peter, from Dallas Texas
Best Channel ❤
Calm Management at Haas , not sure who that might be aimed at 😀
Best decision haas has ever made was firing that guy
It's not really Formula One without you Peter.
Thanks for this.

Checo did say that RedBull opted to use the fp1&2 i believe to do further setup exploration, so the laptimes aren't so representative. Max also mentioned post fp2 that they were focused on long run and he wasn't worried about the gap to the Merc
Sector data supposedly showed Lewis was coasting/ braking early through sectors today. While RB may have the advantage, I think Merc will be substantially closer to them than initially anticipated - it’s a very well rounded race car so far that’s shown promising race pace and quali pace between setups. We’ll see tmrw.
Max drove a 30.3 during testing on the C3. That was the laptime Lewis set today on those same tyres.
Oh if Checo said that it must be true
@@norbertjanssen814 not saying Merc will be ahead of RB but I feel like it will be a much closer fight this season. Especially come upgrade time.
@@z_MVP_Z Possible that RB found data on the car that they did not like post testing resulting in turned down engines today. Could be the new design philosophy and worries of cooling due to zero pod design they have implemented.
I'm gonna tell the iconic Pete Windsor to stop moaning about Abu Dhabi. Everyone knows how they feel about it. Enough!
It would be nice to have max n Lando second ur explanation to see how close you are in your estimate 👍
Awesome insight Pedro! 😮
Good point Pete on the T9/10 comparo. My take on that is that Max by carrying more speed into T10 might have been understeering/washing off speed just slightly at the apex due to the reduced grip from the mediums and therefore carrying more speed than he wanted (and remember the course surface as well there), whereas Lando could arrow the car more precisely at the apex due to the extra grip of the softs (hence the lower speed) but then get on the gas earlier, using the grip which let him use 2nd gear and get a straighter exit, closer to the left of the track than Max. But Max at T9 on Mediums (I know this corner well) matching Lando on Softs shows he has confidence in that RB. Great insights as usual mate.
The upgrade war will be insane this year, it looks to be only a few tenths in race pace from Redbull and the rest of the pack
On average mclaren are second fastest on race pace according to all data sites only 2 tenths a second per lap behind red bull now if that’s a true reflection mclaren gained over a second a lap of race pace last year after upgrades it’s gonna be closer this season I feel
Last year the data said Aston was just as fast in race pace in practise then in the race Redbull won over them by like 40 seconds and they were saving power in the race. We don’t know anything from practise sessions for the first race cause teams are still sandbagging super heavy.
@@stevenst6337 exactly but race runs is a bit more easy to read because they’ll all be on similar fuel loads because otherwise it’s pointless because they won’t get an accurate read themselves if they over load so it’ll be sort of similar I feel
Shame we dont get to see teams lower down in your analysis in order to see how much difference there is, id be curious to how far the alpine times are compared to your top 4 teams
I still think red bull are the pacemakers, but at least its not super easy
Great to see Ferrari sort out their race pace… now we can see good racing
Piastri might have a good season.
Hes coming at Lando
Im happy Ricciardo is looking comfortable in that RB, we might see some of the old Danny magic this year
Here is Peter!!!!
Fernando locked up on lap 5 of the long run so good odds aston is right there
This man said it when he stated that Abu Dhabi '21 was one of the greatest travesties ever in the sport. It literally was literally a sanctioned fix of a race result to determine a championship.
Anytime Peter talks about something positive regarding Alonso there's always a 'but' in there somewhere to try talk him down. His hatred of the man really is something 😂😂
I always get the feeling he doesn't like Alonso.
@@jannieventer4351he doesn’t. All Lewis fanboys have hated Alonso since 2007 and they always will. Peter is the leader of that club. It’s the same for all of his rivals. After Alonso it’s Massa they hated, then Vettel, Rosberg and now Max. Funny thing is only once Vettel was no longer a threat to Lewis and Lewis himself started to like him then they did too.

Feels like repeat of 2021 with this time 3 teams
Both Mercedes cars appeared faster but seemed to have a lot more sparking coming off the floors of their cars than the other teams . Makes me wonder if the Mercedes floor planks will pass the post race inspection after dragging on the bottom of the car over a full race distance ?
your guess is as good as mine really.
They’re likely still working out optimal ride heights.
Haas. Calm management. I have long thought the same.
Me after ther 1st min of this video: And it's back to realty! Op there goes gravity! Lol 😂
Talks sense this man well done pete
12:00 Ferrari certainly has close gear spacing between 2nd and 3rd. I assume this is to optomise slow corner performance rather than standing start acceleration?
The car appears to have some slow corner understeer.
As far back last season, I had the feeling that Merc were gonna be within 3 tenths of red Bull this season. Can't wait for quali to see where they are
I personally think we might see the best Lewis in a long time, he has nothing to lose now, if he ruffles a few feathers and has to get his elbows out on George he knows he can
No they shouldn't get ahead of themselves. They clearly turned the cars up to the highest power level. Listening to the other cars (F1 TV allows you onboard on almost all cars.) Red Bull, and Ferrari didn't even attempt a high power mode run. Even the commentators who usually can't get anything right, were able to pick up on that.
Everyone is focused on long runs and you're still hang up on that 😂
@@chandamubanga😂😂 we havent even had the first quali and yhe redbull fans are already flustered
Ferrari was running older tires by 2 to 3 laps on the long run vs the top teams.
@@chandamubanga If everyone was "Focused on long runs" Merc and Aston Martin wouldn't have done what they did. Your logic is flawed. But hey be a delusional Merc fan. Nothing new..
@lackson4757 Funny how I said Both Red Bull and Ferrari used Mid level Engine settings. And that somehow makes me a "Flustered Red Bull fan"? 🤔🤫 If I wanted to just defend Red Bull I would have, but I defended the teams at the top that deserved from the lunacy of fans like you. Another Delusional Merc Fan.
What is your view on the 3 races on a saturday ? I feel it is bowing to demands, and will set a precedent.
I read somewhere that’s more to do with celebrating Ramadan on Sunday as those particular races are held in Muslim countries. We have plenty of Sunday races before now in those countries where there hasn’t been a clash between the country’s religion and F1.
Has to do with Ramadan on racing sunday in Saudi-Arabia, which is why they race on saturday.
And because FIA rules determin there has to be a week between races, they put Bahrein on a saturday as well.
So it's not about "bowing to demands", but rather respecting local religion.
Which is OK in my book.
Do some basic research man.
@@Dre_The_Millennial Dude, why so agressive. After doing my research i found out that Las Vegas qualifies as a Muslim country.
How does he know that the cars are (or aren't) loaded with fuels?
(big fan of his vids btw)
They need to show MPH at straights end, so we know the engine power comparisons. Without that info it's just talk "speculation"
The legend. He’s back.
What an oddity!! I didn’t realise that Jaguar had lost the plot and built these!!
Excellent analysis, thank you Peter.
I think a world championship point for pole provided you finish in top 3 would be good.
Imagine: last race of the season; a title decider between 2 drivers and while on a q2 flying lap one of them loses out because Stroll drops it in the barriers, bringing out a red flag - effectively relegating him from q3.
Some would be happy with the 1pt just as long as it doesn’t happen to the driver they’re supporting.
SUP PETE!
Gone very quiet in here..."!!!!
Mr Windsor who do you think is quicker between George and Charles ?
I'm not PW, but I know what he'll say: Charles is quicker. PW sees Charles on the same tier as Max and Lewis.
You guys all missed how low the Mercedes is running. This anti-dive is allowing them to sit much lower than the other cars. So low they are sparking in every corner over 100mph. And the skid block is on fire . They might have stole a trick here, and got the jump on the Field. We will see in qualifying
The 9/10 comp between max and lando was BRILLIANT. Another master class from Sir Windsor. This video is bursting with insights. I’m always a more informed fan after watching your content.
Peter for the sake of my f1 fantasy team i would love to know how the bottom 5 teams are doing on the long runs as well! 😂

Sky Sports F1 were embarrassing today, just pure giddy cheerleading for Mercedes because they topped the first practice sessions of the season. Even when Zak Brown, and even Damon, tried to bring them back down to earth by mentioning GPS data showing Red Bull and Ferrari had their engines turned down, and relative pace compared to Hulkenberg, it was almost kinda brushed over.
okay, so what should we do with the information you just supplied us with?
So how do we not know Mercedes had their engine turned down as well? Why would they run their car harder in practice when other teams don't? Makes zero sense.
@@joshn1678According to speed trap speeds, they probably did as well. We'll see who's right at the end of quali

Max is so mature, he knows the race matters only, and it's a marathon. Whoever has good TM will win.
You don't think Alonso or Lewis know? LOL
Did you hear Maxs comments over the radio in fp1. He sounded very petulant.
Stop tripping, which mature are you talking about. 🤣
f1 is a sprint series.
Mature my ass, Max was whinning the entire two practices lol. "This car is shit, we're way off."
Max won more races in 2021 and was the better driver that season. Justice was rightfully served in Abu Dhabi

Stop with the silly comments! He has had chances and is mediocre to be generous and shouldn't even be in F1! Taking up a space for a rookie
@@leecorkill4797 He beat Magnussen, so he should go first after Sargent.
@@leecorkill4797you stop making silly comments first. Rookies need to earn a drive. Prove they are better than the existing drivers. None did that over Hulkenberg. He earned his spot and his experience is what Haas needs right not. Having inexperienced rookies didn’t work out too well for the. previously.
No top speeds? Would give some insight in fuel loads during the long runs
Not really because the amount of downforce matters as well. F.e. the RBR's will always have more wing and then there's testing different aero setups.
Red bull and ferrari were around 8 to 10kph down on Mercedes on fp2 fast laps and long runs
@@orio_3From what I saw on twitter both mercs verstappen leclerc were tied in fp2 at 316kmh and Perez 318kmh there's still more top speed to come from all the teams as they presumably won't have more drag than last year's cars

RedBull is sandbagging BIG TIME......
I doubt it.
What would be the purpose of “sandbagging” . What do they gain from that ? What do they learn from that ? Do you imagine both drivers , the management , engineers etc all conspiring in this plan of deception ? Why ?
@@ThePapaJohnKing Just looking at the long run pace Max Verstappen has a few tenths on Mercedes, Ferrari, McLaren and Alonso's Aston Martin. Where it's pretty close between them all.

Turning down the engine during practice isn’t uncommon
Max did say that they didn’t turn up the engine yet
AD21 gave a big visual sway, but across that season, HAM got a away with a lot of corner cutting, worth well more than a couple points over the season. Then there was the not-so-green strategy of burning through engines, an hopping from the back of the grid to the win on what seemed like 2019 Ferrari engine modes.
Silverstone 2021 should NEVER have happened, let alone result in a 50 POINT WDC balance shift. It should NEVER have come to AD!
What did hamilton do wrong at silverstone ?
It's been 3 years.....let Abu Dhabi go
The Lewis fanboys never will. As long as he is still racing we will continue to hear it from them. Most are only fans of his though and not the sport and will retire from watching when he does.
Maybe if the last 2 seasons were actually interesting people would stop talking about it. I think the main reason 2021 keeps getting talked about is that was the last time there was a fight for the championship. If 22 or 23 were on the same level people would probably talk about those seasons more
You think one of the biggest scandals in sporting history is just gonna be forgotten ? 🤣🤣🤣
@@kityhawk2000 what makes a season interesting? Is it only about who’s battling for the championship or a fans chosen driver and if they aren’t in the title fight it’s boring?
The coverage we now have of the entire field and the depth of talent gave me more than enough things to follow and keep my interest. In fact, the amount of F1 content on YT is a bit overwhelming at times. I’m loving that we have so much more info about the entire field than even 10 years ago, let alone the ‘00’s & ‘90’s.
