  • Mercedes were 1-2 - Sir Lewis Hamilton ahead of George Russell - after the first day of practice for the Bahrain GP - but several of the leading runners did not record serious times on the soft Pirellis. So how is it shaping-up? Peter Windsor looks at the long runs in both FP1 and FP2 ; looks at a driver comparison through the famous T9/T10 section; and, for fun, details the practice start of Charles Leclerc in the new Ferrari SF-24.

    Peter, please, please, please, keep breaking down the different driving styles in corners. This is the most interesting and exciting information, as I've never raced a car before. However, it just shows the subtly of Max vs. Lando and the beauty in the different driving styles.

    • @ajaxwalker
      @ajaxwalker 3 месяца назад +1

      Not sure if i fully trust what he is saying just based on minimum speeds. Lando could have braked earlier and got his braking done quicker which allows him to accelerate earlier and get to a higher speed which is important for the next straight. But i'm just a random internet commentator so i wouldn't trust me either.
      Do you do any sim racing? It's probably the closest that any of us will get to real racing.

      @@ajaxwalkerthis is true, some of his analysis don’t add up. He states Lewis is an easy and early braker to settle the car. Thing is almost everyone else, including some of Lewis’ former teammates, have said he’s a hard and late braker. Lewis doesn’t get out braked very often. I’m beginning to think he does it to try and distinguish Lewis from other champions like Schumi, Senna, etc. who were aggressive and very late brakers.
      “…the closest ANY of us….” That should read SOME, because some of us here have actually raced.😉

It looks like RB are still much faster on race pace than everyone else BUT I don't see them running away with it in any sort of similar way to last season. Peter, I would suggest Max's speed through turns 9 & 10 would also highlight the RB20's rear end stability and efficiency with its down force. Not taking anything away from Max because you still have to smooth everything out, but this is the genius of Newey & let us not forget the experience they had with Vettel and the exhaust blown diffuser era around 2011. The biggest difference here is Max is far more precise and balanced on the front end (like Kimi) also that he can carry his speed more comfortably through the apex.

    Good point Pete on the T9/10 comparo. My take on that is that Max by carrying more speed into T10 might have been understeering/washing off speed just slightly at the apex due to the reduced grip from the mediums and therefore carrying more speed than he wanted (and remember the course surface as well there), whereas Lando could arrow the car more precisely at the apex due to the extra grip of the softs (hence the lower speed) but then get on the gas earlier, using the grip which let him use 2nd gear and get a straighter exit, closer to the left of the track than Max. But Max at T9 on Mediums (I know this corner well) matching Lando on Softs shows he has confidence in that RB. Great insights as usual mate.

      Imagine: last race of the season; a title decider between 2 drivers and while on a q2 flying lap one of them loses out because Stroll drops it in the barriers, bringing out a red flag - effectively relegating him from q3.
      Some would be happy with the 1pt just as long as it doesn’t happen to the driver they’re supporting.

    You guys all missed how low the Mercedes is running. This anti-dive is allowing them to sit much lower than the other cars. So low they are sparking in every corner over 100mph. And the skid block is on fire . They might have stole a trick here, and got the jump on the Field. We will see in qualifying

    Sky Sports F1 were embarrassing today, just pure giddy cheerleading for Mercedes because they topped the first practice sessions of the season. Even when Zak Brown, and even Damon, tried to bring them back down to earth by mentioning GPS data showing Red Bull and Ferrari had their engines turned down, and relative pace compared to Hulkenberg, it was almost kinda brushed over.

    AD21 gave a big visual sway, but across that season, HAM got a away with a lot of corner cutting, worth well more than a couple points over the season. Then there was the not-so-green strategy of burning through engines, an hopping from the back of the grid to the win on what seemed like 2019 Ferrari engine modes.
