  • Steve McQueen calling out Hollywood directors who don't cast black and latino actors: "It's SHAMEFUL". In this video: directors Steve McQueen, Michel Hazanavicius, Bennett Miller, Mike Mills, Alexander Payne and Jason Reitman. Clip from The Hollywood Reporter's Directors Roundtable in 2011.
    THR: You’re all men, and only one of you, Steve, is a minority - why is that?
    McQUEEN: I must be in America.
    MILLS: Yeah, why isn’t there a woman here? My wife could be sitting here.
    THR: Name a female director who made a major film this year.
    MILLS: Miranda July [“The Future”].
    PAYNE: Lynne Ramsay [“We Need to Talk About Kevin”], Andrea Arnold [“Wuthering Heights”].
    THR: OK, but you’re talking about small films that have been little seen in America.
    McQUEEN: I mean, the question could be different. The question could be, “Why aren’t there more black directors?” because there are obviously more women directors than black directors.
    THR: So what’s the answer?
    McQUEEN: I have no idea. I mean, it’s opportunity, isn’t it? That’s what it’s about - opportunity. And access, because some people just give up. I’m always astonished by American filmmakers, particularly living in certain areas, when they never cast one black person, or have never put them in a lead in the movie. I’m astonished. It’s shameful. How do you live in New York and not cast a black actor or a Latino actor? It’s shameful. It’s unbelievable.
    REITMAN: Not stepping into that.
    MILLER: I don’t know.

    2:03 I’m not stepping into "WHAT” exactly??? Steve McQueen called it and all those other directors had the opportunity to say something...anything...but they all punked out...why’s that? I’ll tell you why, because when you live in a world of complete access to everything at anytime it seems completely reasonable to make a film that takes place in a city in America with an all white cast and it be ok. No other black, brown, red, or yellow people could do this without being seen as unrealistic, misrepresenting or straight out racist. That’s why they were quiet.

      Beng Zino if one made truthful films about the bible the cast would be a large majority of black actresses/actors if not all

      They are quiet because no one ever got canceled for being quiet, but once you open your mouth and tell the TRUTH, you’re a goner. If they would have said their opinion, most would have canceled them, and then they’d get blackballed in the film industry. The cancel culture is teaching everyone to SHUT UP and be silent, and it’s working…
      Get used to the duct tape because it has just started….

    Confronting talk from Steve McQueen. He doesn't mince words. ---2021 UPDATE --- so I posted on here a couple of years ago, thankful that McQueen said what he said. Since then, I actually met Steve McQueen in person at the Tate in London during his talk with Paul Gilroy. As a black filmmaker myself who has never been able to get any support or funding for my films, I hoped to have a quick chat about any advice he could give me to get my work supported. He basically just looked at me blankly and did the whole 'call my agent' thing which in his case is Cassaroto Ramsey. So I did that and did I get anything acknowledged? No.
    My point is that the people who watch this clip will see Steve McQueen as virtuous and gutsy, but when he actually had a young black filmmaker standing right in front of him asking for some very basic advice, he had absolutely no time. What he (and many black filmmakers) is talking about here is HIMSELF. When he says he wants more 'black directors' what he really means is he himself wants more work.

    “How can you live in New York and not cast a black actor?” - this would be more powerful to me if he himself didn’t make the 2011 film Shame, set in New York, and cast Michael Fassbender and Carey Mulligan in the lead roles…. Maybe it was easier for him to get the financing with those names attached but still worth bringing into the conversation.

    • @madtonesbr
      @madtonesbr 2 года назад +12

      Well, first, he did cast black actors in Shame. Second, the movie was still a low budget feature. Third, have you seen it? It's a pretty realistic and depressing movie of privileged ennui and the leads aren't exactly protagonists. Fassbender is exactly the kind of person the tale is about.

    In response to Steve being the only minority on the panel: I wonder what his perspective is regarding the lack opportunities for minorities but more specifically black American born (non immigrants including 1st generation born) directors in American. Most of his film works are short films. He did one full length film (which was an indie film) before 12 Years of Slave then more recently Widows. There are several black American filmmakers with more full length indie films under their belt and never had the opportunity to director a major studio film. How was he able to skip the line...lol and afford opportunities so "quick"?

      @antonsterlin9720 3 года назад +10

      Steve McQueen won the highest prize for visual art in Europe b4 you ever saw one of his films. Also 12 years a slave was his 3rd feature starring Fassbender....and why him over an American? Why british actors over American actors? Because UK funds and respects the arts, their actors come from the theater with way more ability and time under their belt. America makes Fast & Furious 9 and SAW 12

    • @debbiep99
      @debbiep99 3 года назад +3

      Skip the line? Because there can only be 1 black director in your mind? How were all those white men able to skip the line then? Why were they afforded the opportunity where black directors weren't?

    • @madtonesbr
      @madtonesbr 2 года назад +4

      It speaks volumes that he's one example of a vastly UNDERrepresented population and you still see him as somehow skipping ahead of others. Brother... if anyone has "skipped the line" in the world of directors it's the thousands and thousands of white men and the industry of executives and producers who continue to hand them opportunities over others. What a myopic comment.

    I totally agree with McQueen overall position on this panel regarding why blacks are not cast in America but allow me to play devils advocate for a minute. I find his reaction to the lack of opportunity for black actors in America a bit puzzling. He used the words "astonished" and "shameful". I am curious to know his perspective/position on black/African Brit actors by way the UK that come to America and compete for the same roles he speak of or lack of in America.

    • @madtonesbr
      @madtonesbr 2 года назад +1

      It's telling that you think that a small (maybe half dozen?) contemporary black British actors are the reason minorities don't get cast in the US, rather than the thousands of white directors hired by hundreds of moneyed studios that have run the industry for a century. You can't see it even when it's right in front of you, can you?

    I think Steve McQueen's erroneous here. Sidney Poitier, Morgan Freeman, Denzel Washington, Lawrence Fishburne, Don Cheadle, Will Smith, Martin Lawrence, Eddie Murphy, James Earl Jones, Billy Dee Williams, Danny Glover, Ernie Hudson, Samuel L. Jackson, Richard Roundtree, Harry Belafonte Duane Johnson have all been cast in leading roles for movies and TV. And that's just for starters & I didn't include Latinos nor those who've passed away. Many Black/Latino women have been the leads also.

      That’s not what he said. He said not one of those directors on that stage has ever casted a black lead. And many other white directors too, especially if you live in a metropolitan city like NYC to not cast a black actor is shameful.

      @okeegrate7179 3 года назад

      Hmmm, Sidney hasn't had a lead role in 50+ years nor Harry. Harry's films were mostly white not including his role in Carmen. When was the last time Billy Dee was the lead in anything...nearly 50 years. He had a bit role in early Starwars but never a lead in "mainstream " films. Comparatively black leads are rare. Studios don't see our films as Oscar worthy or as money makers. The white men in this clip are quite because they are guilty. Not one had the guts to speak honestly about the system or thier own casting.
