What rank was Joe Bugner when he fought Bruno in 1987's title eliminator in order to get a 1989 title shot with Mike Tyson? No other opponents between 1987 and 1989. Looks like a lot of top 10 dodging and sitting back avoiding oppositon during that time, avoiding any top 10, no Holyfield, no Buster Douglas, no Witherspoon rematch, all to wait for the title shot at Tyson. Short version is that he avoided most top opposition and was happy to be protected by his manager and the promoters for the big pay days.

He was a very humble guy and a nice person, that's why people loved him so much. It wasn't just solely his boxing why people loved him or his wins, people did love it when he won sure but he was a nice lovable person that didn't get too much invested in pre fight hypes or tit for tat bollocks he was just a humble well liked man that was a boxer, and a very powerful boxer if he caught you. As you seen here.

To be fair big Frank was a better boxer than Wilder , Wilders punch power covered up an amateur at best , I mean he did win the title to be fair and punch power is part of boxing , but boxing skills and Wilder is one of the worst I've seen.
Brunos jab , heart and punch power himself made him better than Wilder.

When I think about the 80s, one of the things that was absolutely brilliant about being in Britain at the time was the charisma of our cultural and sporting icons. Bruno made you proud to be British. To have the backing of a nation means you have got into the psyche of the country. He was loved by martial artists, doormen, the landlord of the local, factory workers, the barmaid, businesses owners and your gran... Big Frank was loved by the nation. Not too many people in the country today could say anything close to that

I dont mind admitting but i had tears in my eyes when he finally got the belt.
Ive never seen a ring fill up so quick with other boxers watching at ringside to cheer for him , from memory i think Naz was in there , Eubank i think , but the ring was full , it really was like a Rocky film.
Then i remember him sitting at ringside in tears , he literally poured his heart out about not being an uncle t*m , that poor guy got abuse , not by racists , but from his own "community" calling him an uncle t*m , just because he made extra money by appearing on TV shows and doing panto , and because the white people of Britain took him to our hearts , just like we do with any down to earth , hard working underdog..
He suffered terribly back then , and to see him in tears having to explain himself on the night he became champion was heartbreaking.
A couple of things in the voiceover back then as well , yes Bruno had stamina problems , he was chisled out of granite and muscular boxers at heavyweight often burn out quicker than those who arent full out muscles.
He didnt have questionable mental toughness though , and he didnt see the canvass at all , Brunos main problem was he had too much heart and too strong mentally , he wouldnt go down and take a knee , Bruno took too much damage standing ,,who knows had he took a knee in the first Tyson fight and allowed himself an 8 count he may have cleared his head and it would have got Tyson away , he just didnt want to give in and eventually Tyson stopped him.
If you notice how many shots he took from Tyson though , not many opponents take one punch flush from Tyson.
Also in one of the early rounds Bruno shook Tyson , no one had hurt Tyson before that , who knows on another day Bruno could have been the Buster Douglas..
I dont remember the Lennox Lewis fight , but i know the finish and Bruno wasnt out , just overwhelmed in the corner.
I dont remember this either , thats a vicious KO , the guy was struggling , it always worries me watching old boxing fights just how poor the aftercare was , nowadays they would be straight in with the oxygen.
I remember when Spencer Oliver got carried out on a stretcher in the Albert Hall , it felt like forever before he was getting proper medical help and by then it was too late.
Always had always will have a lot of love for Bruno.

    • @BarmaBoysAndFamily
      @BarmaBoysAndFamily Месяц назад

@@w4tkn Exactly. In any war, and anything you risk your life in is war, your legacy is created as much by the quality of your opponents as it is by yourself. AJ is so lucky he is trading punches with todays crowd, and not prime Mike Tyson's, Foreman's and Ali's. Same can be said for Wilder and even Fury I think. They look good fighting each other but no one would even know any of them in different era's. And even the great Usyk I suspect would have remained a great cruiserweight only. Mr Bruno would have not had to wait so long to be world champion today. And for proof I offer the Bruno vs the last great champion, Lennox Lewis fight. Bruno nearly changed history there as Lewis was outclassed throughout. Put that Bruno in against AJ or Wilder etc and only Bruno walks out as champion for sure

I was at that fight, the only one of Bruno's I saw live. It was a decent enough card as well. Joe Bugner's son was up that night. I have a vague recollection of Lloyd Honeyghan being on as well, but that might be misremembered from something else. I remember the banter beforehand about him blinding Bruno. That was after Frank had been through surgery to reattach his retina. After all the pre-match hype, the lad didn't swing many punches. A great memory, nonetheless.
