  • Levon Helm Band performs Huddie Ledbetter's "Borgeoois Blues" at Gathering of the Vibes Music Festival. Ledbetter (a/k/a "Lead Belly") recorded the song in 1938 after experiencing racism, classism, and discrimination from town establishments who would permit entry to their interracial parties. "The home of the Brave / The land of the Free / I don't wanna be mistreated by no bourgeoisie."

Huddle Leadbetter aka Leadbelly was a great all around musician. He was also friends with Woody Guthrie. Both sang about prejudice against the poor and minorities. They also sang about income disparity and power by the rich ( bourgeois) and their politician lapdogs.

Leadbelly killed a friend probably over a girl, he also attacked a white Salvation Army man with a penknife which according to him was because the SA man didn’t want him walking on the white part of the pavement (if your ever in Houston you better walk right).

@@alexbowman7582 You are confusing the message with the messenger. The bourgeoisie and segregation in DC is the message. Leadbelly was the messenger. His message is still valid despite his criminal past. His music and lyrics are excellent. His messages were also spot on correct.
