watching atleti this season has been so much fun because not only is the style of play very fun to watch but also the injury time winning goals and equalizers. they just make you believe. aupa atleti
Yeah he definitely played 4-4-2 previously but this is 5-3-2, sometimes very obviously so. It has evolved out of a 4-4-2 (via the 3-5-2 last season) and uses some of the same moves, but the foundation now is a 5-3-2.
@@sEaNoYeAh not really, its a 4-4-2 but he asks the men out wide (Gallager and Juliano) to track back the opposition wing back, so thats why you sometimes see a back 5
As an Atleti fan, who watches almost every game, in my opinion, the most common is to use 4-4-2 as a base, which then depending on the context of the game and the opponent, from time to time can be transformed into a 5-3-2 or 5-4-1 to defend in a low block. Yesterday against Osasuna, our approach was, in terms of system, 4-4-2 to press high and defend at middle block, combined with 5-3-2 (and 5-4-1 in the second half) for the moments in which the Navarrese progressed up to 3/4 of our half. From my point of view as an Atleti fan, the most common system these months is to play in 4-4-2, but if we have to resort to a 5-man defence in specific games and at specific moments (even with a 6-man defence in some matches) we also do it. For many years Simeone has opted for versatility and flexibility in the team, giving versatility to many players to manage various systems. I hope you found it useful, and greetings from Madrid. 👍
This tactic is honestly a refreshing departure from the typical 433/4231 + 325 structure we've come to expect from top teams. I have GOT to replicate this in FM!
@@elsotanodelhorror810It's actually a massacre to replicate the exact tactics without bending some instructions. FM match engines haven't evolved that much. Perhaps the two wingers can be WM or WP and full backs can be FBs. The thing here is it's not about player roles, but replication of the player rotations is such a pain in the ass. Moreover Atletico doesn't press, but in FM, if you play games without pressing, you'll lose most of the games.
one note, when sørloth plays (typically with angelito as a partner, they do tend to do the old fashioned target man with pressing forward, although sørloth does still move in to goal scoring positions more than the old school target forward). i think it’s also worth pointing out that the profile of player is important too, atletico on the flanks, have Giuliano, Lino and Llorente, all of whom are willing runners who don’t give up, so the ability to come in late and get the shot away (or pull a defender with them, giving space to Alvarez or Grizou), this said though, Lino’s conversion rate is very poor finally i think something worth pointing out in defence is how atletico invite pressure in the wings very often because the touch line essentially serves as an additional presser when the trap is sprung (given how you obviously don’t want to carry the ball out of play, it confines you), this, however does mean dangerous players sometimes get given too much space in those areas and the best of players can and have punished that, thinking back to one real goal scored against atleti where he benzema players on the byline to create a chance. thanks for the video, always nice to see los colchoneros covered, aupa atleti!
Excellent video. One thing I would like to add is how Sørloth creates disorder in the opposition box. He often get the attention of 2 defenders and thus creates space for other offensive players, especially Álvarez. It is also interesting to see how every time people are calling Diego Simeone finished and question his tactics, he always finds a way out of it. He is truly a legendary coach. Aupa Atleti!
Griezmann is very underrated, I hope he get the recognition he deserve, I think he is in the same table as ronaldo and messi, but his contribution is not translated in a lot of goals, he also has an incredible workrate and defensive contribution+ genius positionning which goes unnoticed
Great video! Last year Atletico were using the exact philosophy you covered with Inzaghi and Inter, but I had a hard time wrapping my head around what's changed this year and why
Even at the beginning of this year our midfield was getting overrun while our 3 CBs stood in the back not helping. Thankfully Simeone found an amazing fix for it
It's also good for them, that they changed back from 5-3-2 to 4-4-2 in the last season. Also incredible is, that they have many of "allrounders" in their Team. And they are on an very high physical Level. They played very intensive and let It looks like one of the easiest kinds of Play.
I'd say Simeone makes them allrounders (or like he sees what more the players can do that they never did). He usually gives new role to his players making each player be able to play at least 2-3 position.
@BBP_BKK I think it could be both. Between use them where they never played before and the players have free space where they can create anything what they want. Attackers in creation role and defenders in their way of fighting and defending.
Thanks FM, full respect for your point of view. Often happens that Simeone is underrated without a simple analysis. However, you say that Atletico doesn't makes a big pressing but I do realise that Atletico makes it when is losing or equals in the scores. This is not a "catenaccio" tactics, to find the source please check a former manager of Cholo, Sven Goran Eriksson.

@FootballMeta so would you say they have freedom in the final third or Simeone gives them enough information to help them finish off their attacks. Thank you
Very interesting video showcasing how Simeone's tactics can produce quite attractive passages of play. You should cover the Milan Derby at the Supercoppa final, such an exciting match with interesting tactical situations from both teams (Bisseck overlapping and even inverting into midfield to bypass Milan's press at times, Leao playing more centrally to get on the ball more, Morata even played as a RWB out of possession for a couple of minutes).
Wait, You said "from a position like this, counter attacks or" what.... Did you say counter attacks or super-cut? I couldn't pick what you said, did you say super-cut?
This shows how people watched Atletico in 500BC. Also saying "they were lucky" vs Barcelona when their team is worth 1BILLION vs Atletico around 550M€ is ridiculous
LOL this shift has been happening slowly over 5 years, just most fans are stuck on memes from 10 years ago so they yelled at us atletico fans for trying to explain it 😭
What changed? Well Simeon is a very good friend with Simone Inzaghi, and clearly got really inspired by his tactics, so its Atleti infused with modern Inter. But I feel this new style will start to become more widespread in the coming years, just Simeone jumped on it very early and now they are really kicking it into gear
Most teams dont. But they have been a stable top 3 team for like 10 years and they go far in CL every year. It is very difficult to win CL and La Liga.
Felix doesn't work hard enough, he cannot seem to settle anywhere, he needs to go to a team where they are happy to have a luxury player who doesn't press
@DT-ip4db That's the excuse media tells you. Ive watched him play in 90% of his Atleti games and he is much much better and more useful pressing and doing defensive work than Correa for example and Simeone had a change of mind overnight and started playing Correa over him. Orders from above that Simeone had to follow. And other managers too.
@@AndoaintheMartyr Every club wanted him. He was the current Golden Boy winner, there was no other player who clubs wanted more than him. Simeone is top 3 manager in the world for the last 15 years! Underrated manager
So basically total football the same way inzaghi plays, no structure or shape but rather occupation of spaces no matter who
So they beat Inter and ate their meal

Close knitted position to overload one side, winning the ball back as soon as possible and it easier since they are in close approximate. Got it.
