my mum when I was 13 "no you can not have that black nail polish and I'm buying you the purple top, you don't want the black one" everyone when I was 18 "it's just a phase, you'll be dressing differently in 6 months time" my mother in law when I was 25 "you should really stop dressing like that since you are a mother now" I'm 32 now and even though I have toned down my goth style a lot I still love it, I hate when people call it a phase when it's just a part of who we are
amy danced A good friend of mine has goth parents. And they are so cool! She is also a goth and her other siblings are not but there parents don't mind. They are just the coolest parents I ever met because there just like "wear what you want" :) "wear what you like"
OMG you’re a dancer in the goth community!!!!!!!!! i find that very rare, unfortunately. i’ve been doing ballet for a little over 10 years and ig you could say i’m goth but i really don’t know a lot of us out there. so cool :) cheers love
+Rachel Whatever (Jhonenstalker) Of course! Its silly to be mean to them, if we're nasty to EVERY new person who wants to join the subculture, it'll die out completely in a couple of decades. Sometimes I wonder if thats what people want, it seems so bizarre to try and put people off! Like yeah some babybats can be uninformed and a tad over-eager to dive face first into goth without really knowing what it is, but everyone has to start somewhere, and I think its much better to offer advice and gentle encouragement, than to scare them off!
Starting off I was a nu goth. My family thought at first it was a faze until they realized I was not changing. But my stepdad being religious thought I was worshipping the devil so seeing my family at parties was really hard especially when my grandma starts talking and then no one wanted to really talk to me. I've learn that nothing makes me happier then being the way I am and I've learned that no matter what everyone else says nobody is wearing this look but me so screw them. After years of my families accusations of worshipping the devil i am proud to say I'm still a nu goth, with a degree and job in accounting at a contracting business and I am engaged. Goth isnt a faze its my way of life.
I was starting out when in was in middle school and my aunt thought the same thing...she's southern and old. Don't be hard on them (not saying u are) they just dont understand.
Lol I live in the uk but I’ve been to hot topic once in Canada, and although there’s some band merch it’s mostly just pop culture stuff like Harry Potter and even Justin Bieber stuff😂it’s pretty lame lol
The ELITE COVEN of Goth learn batchildren this goddess of Goth is cool in all things Goth follow listen study in no time you will be the in crowd being ELITE is not a crime watching
I want to be goth but my parents don't allow it. Now I am just sitting here, watching videos like this and adding articles on eBay in my cart.....but I never buy anything. Sad story bOI
Junko Enoshima it was same for me but you need to start slowly my mum despises goths and emos and stuff but just start slowly and talk to ur mom and tell her that you aren't gonna do drugs or worship Satan or something but be mature when talking to her don't be childish ☺☺ good luck
My parents didnt let me do this either when i was in Middle school, I'm 23 years old now and my parents STILL flip tf out if I wear black eyeshadow -.-
I love ur attitude and personally I'm not too much into goth but I like some of it and it doesn't matter how u dress it's what's inside and people judge goths a lot which is f up
My brother is a Goth and he gets followed by security in shops he thinks it's funny and you btw are so pretty ^_^ i know sometimes its allways nice someone to say
I never understand that!XD Like, do you think if I was here to shoplift I would wear such an attention grabbing outfit and shoes that are clearly not made for a speedy get away!?
I've always been into "goth." Always. The music, interest in fashion, the decor and my love for the dark, macabre, skulls, etc. I wanted to dress goth in middle school and my parents were totally against it. Fast forward to 21, I'm still loving everything "goth" and trying to slowly implement it into my life since I'm on the cusp of adulthood and independence. I'm so excited! Thank you for the tips. It'll be easier to express myself the moment I am completely moved out.
I just get fishnets from Walmart and cut them and I wear like black tight torn shorts then I buy leather black boots off of eBay and my brother gives me his old biker chains and I put them around my boots and for shirts I just wear a tank top and a lace cardigan and the i wear black or blood read lipstick, pale ass foundation and black ass eye shadow lol that's just how I dress for my gothic ass I don't buy expensive goth brands because one I'm cheap lol,and second I can't afford it so I mostly buy stuff from Walmart or eBay haha
my make up is goth, my clothing style is a mix of heavy metal and black metal, I do not listen to goth music, at all, except for Type O negative, I'm into Heavy metal and death metal. Cheers to being individuals!
I'm sweet Lolita, the total opposite of goth, but when I first started Lolita, I wanted to try goth, I went through this total gothic stage, and yet one day I woke up and I was like.. "Ya know, let's try pink and purple." That was the begging of my Lolita journey!
I'm not really a complex-clothed goth. Mostly just black shirts and pants, some combat boots or converse, and thick black eyeshadow. But I love the intricate style some goths posess... I just wish I looked good in that cool, dark complex chain of skirts and knee high boots and stuff...
It's confusing for me because I'm into more than one type of Goth style. I like the Victorian-inspired Goth, Pastel Goth, and Goth Lolita, so it's hard when I have a small budget and need to pick and choose with my wardrobe.
The bane of my life. Liking a million styles (not even only limited to the billions of styles of goth..) means you either have to have the money for like 20 different wardrobes, or you will suffer.x_x LOL
I dress depending on my mood. I usually dress super dark but if I'm in a super good mood or feel 'like a little kid' I will add some pastel colours into my clothing.
I enjoy the fashion, and the darker things in life, but I don't class myself as goth. I'm alternative but because I take so much inspiration from all parts of the alternative lifestyles and music, and fashion that I don't label myself anything other than alternative.
I got into goth in the late 1980's when I asked my mom how Robert Smith does his hair like that. She got out a comb and showed me how to rat your hair. Then I got a hold of her lipstick. It was like a fuse had been lit. back then we didn't use the word 'goth'. It was death rock
I am a Christian and love Jesus and I struggled my entire life with what I now realize is ONLY people's opinions. Now, at 48 I have come to realize I can still be Goth and have my faith and everyone can have their opinions and I just don't care anymore.
This is so nice. I've had goth elitists comment on my social medias saying that I'm a fake goth and a poser just because I wear color every now and then! I used to be insecure about that but now I can wear all pink and still confidently say "I'm just a goth person who happens to also like the color pink!" I feel like when you're younger, you spend too much time trying to follow the subculture to a T, but once you're older, you make your own rules on what goth really means to you.
When I was younger, I kept nagging my parents to let me wear clothing I wanted, more goth, but they'd always pick something I didn't like wearing, so very subtly I started to just change around my wardrobe, and how I looked, to how I wanted it. And my mom noticed, but, she didn't really understand, even now she'd sceptical. But, I'm older, and wear what I want. Next on the list, my hair. I've always hated my hair. xD But, you can't win. Also, the thing that annoys me worse, is if you're out shopping, and someone's like: Here try this pink dress on. I'm like: ...no? I don't-no...I don't like that...They're like: But its *pink!* Girls like pink...and it'd look nice on you! I'm still like: N-no....not at all... *T^T*
I completely get that. I have a bunch of bright and light coloured clothing that my mum buys when she goes shopping without me (majority of the time), but at least she doesn't bring back only floral or blinding clothes all the time. Though I'm not goth I'm interested in a lot of alternative fashion and love dark colours, but my mum doesn't understand that. She would constantly complain about me wanting to wear black instead of other brighter colours and that I don't have any fashion sense because of it. What she doesn't realize is she only thinks this way because my fashion sense is the polar opposite of her's. Also I hate the stereotype that because you're a girl you like pink...pink is one of my least favorite colours, right above mustard yellow. Now I realize that there's quite a bit of pink in my profile picture, but I like her outfit not the pink though it's a fitting background.
I really get that pink thing but I’m glad my parents are ok with it as long as I have good grades and am a nice person but I hate how much I’ve been told by everyone like the girls and boys at school and how much they tell me I should wear pink since it’s a “ girl color “ and that I should wear dresses and I should wear bright colors like shut tf pinkie pie and sit down
You know what? I'm not actually a goth at all, even though I am very fascinated by the goth subculture and all its different forms. But I just still love watching your videos because they are just so incredibly positive and sweet. :) It's just so refreshing, especially with all the hatred in and around youtube. Keep being true to yourself, because you are truely awesome!
RS Not necessarily born that way but molded that way at an early age. My mom was Goth back in the 80s. All the music she used to play when I was a child, the Cure, Bauhaus, Joy Division, Siouxsie, Nick Cave etc. most definitely resulted in my Goth psychology. It's not something you join, it's just how you are. You may think you "decided" to go Goth, RS but obviously, you already were. Otherwise, you wouldn't be attracted to it.
I’ve started expressing my goth side a bit more lately and my dad actually asked me why I’ve been dressing ‘cooler’ lately lol my mom loves witchy stuff and that’s my style atm.
I'm finally out and can dress as a goth... Before I was out I never really learned much about goth looks, because it... I couldn't. I wasn't a guy, I couldn't make myself look like a goth guy, and if I looked at girl goth clothes it hurt too much. So, here I am, a goth in her 30s, and the only things I have in my goth tool box are cat eyes (and down the nose for a wolf like look) and using baby powder to make my foundation (baby powder + sunscreen if I'm out of foundation) pale, and lipsticks. All of which I picked up when I was a baby goth in the 90s. My goth fashion skills have atrophied, and I used to be a clothier, so fashion is one of the things I'm good at. Building a wardrobe to match a personality that you've kept hidden for 29 years is expensive, and daunting. FFS, I finally bagged you my male clothes just last night, and I've been out over a year. I've been keeping my real clothes in bags, and draped over my sleigh bed. The old clothes are going to transgender clothes swap charities, and now I've two dressers for my clothes. So hard building a wardrobe from scratch...
Damn your make up and eyes are always on point! I pop in every once in s while and I'm shocked at how many different looks you have and it seems unlimited. I'm envious. Love it. You are beautiful and I enjoy his down to Earth you are. I'm 43. I went through a goth stage when I was 15 to 17. It didn't stick. But I had fun and appreciate your honesty and your topics. I enjoy them.
I've been into alternative fashion since I was 9. Ive loved rock n roll my entire life. I've been learning about goth music, history, and for a.few years now and I've finally built up the courage to express My self the way I want to.
I'm just getting into Goth culture thanks for the good advice. My mom is an Elder Goth actually and she agreed with a lot of the advice in this video. Again thanks!
Your confidence is so amazing that I cannot express it in words. I have always wore black and dressed on the 'darker side' but never wanted to call myself 'goth' because I enjoy more of modern screamo music rather than the music from the 80's. I just can't get into it for some reason and for years I have been bashed for it. Thank you so much, Toxic for your words of wisdom and positive message
Ever since I was little i've been hella into the goth/punk scene. I finally have the freedom to express myself and im really excited to learn more about the fashion and history around it. Thanks for the video! Ur literally so pretty btw❤
I've always been goth, but I haven't always expressed it on the outside due to different job requirements or social awkwardness of just wanting to fit in. But, inside, I have been goth for about 11 years (or, I guess, really since forever) , and I'm finally in a place where I can really express myself again :D I don't really, nor have I ever, claimed to be or subscribed to any particular subgenres of goth, I do my own thing and make my own style, pick a little from that and a little from this :)
Brilliant video 💗 I lost friends when I started to get into punk music when I was younger. Girls in my class wrote me a letter and left it in my locker and it was basically offering to give me a girly makeover so boys would like be and so I could stop being weird 😂 it makes me laugh now but at the time I was like wtf! People like that aren't your friends and there's no need to entertain assholes like that. Xxx
You really do learn who your real friends are when you start to be yourself. It was nuts but it kinda shaped who I am today, I don't care what anyone thinks of my style. xx
My inner goth is crying, Thank you for this! My biggest thing that is stopping me is being worried about other people's opinions and all the mean things they might say to me 🤦♀️
You do you. You don't have to know the whole history or do anything goths do. If you like the attire that shows you appreciate it. And if someone says you can't wear anything gothic cause you don't know what it is or calls you a poser give them one of these🖕🏼🖕🏼
I am in the same boat. I wouldn't judge anyone else for it because I like dressing like that too, but I also don't wanna be called a poser or anything.
Personally, I wear whatever style I want... I don't want to do it offensively, of course! Some days I really feel like wearing something more bohemian, and it's a lot of fun. Other days I feel like wearing something darker, more goth-inspired, and that's okay too. I don't label myself as either boho or goth--I just see certain styles that I like, and I wear them. and I think that's okay :)
I love this! I'm not goth and I'll never be but I love learning about those who are different than me. thanks for providing these links! I'm definitely going to check them out and be better versed in this subculture! 🙂
I have always been darkly inclined but was afraid of what people would think. I started watching your videos over 2 years ago and since then my goth style has flourished🖤
Thank you for giving great advice to newcomers! Some goths seem to shame them which is so sad and awful, so it's so good to see someone reacting positively to people who are new to the subculture. Loved this video! :)
Yeah, it's kind of dumb for the elders of any kind of subculture to shame any newcomers. Without new blood coming into any subculture, the whole thing will die out with the elders. What the hell are they thinking? I'm not saying they need to recruit or anything, just that shaming people and pushing them away is not how they will keep their subculture going. If they keep that bullshit up, there won't be any goths in the next thirty years. Idiots.
Oh I love you. This video is perfect! I was in such a bad mood too, after listening to that show 'Deadly Women', because they said that 'goth' and 'devil worship' go hand in hand >:| xx
+ReeRee Phillips Fml, those stereotypes make me weep. I also love how every American TV show with a goth character not only makes them into black magic and devil worship, but also gives them all a really tragic back story, and then at the end of the episode when they're FINALLY accepted by the jocks and cheerleaders and preppy girls, they're CURED of their gothness and become normal, because all they ever wanted was acceptance.. *EYE FUCKING ROLL*
To be fair though, a lot of the things the devil supposedly does, compared to a lot of the things god supposedly does... the devil actually seems kinda cool? And god seems to me like a fucking egotistical prick. So yknow what, devil worship it is.
this was so helpful to me. I’ve been in the emo/alt subcultures for the past couple years and recently have been shifting my interest towards the goth subculture and am really interested and passionate about it. I’ve slowly been putting pieces together for outfits and trying different makeup looks. This made me feel confident about going forward. The advice is much appreciated and helpful🖤 the description box has a lot of links that I’ve found inspiring and helpful for me to be able to navigate my way through being able to find good options for music ect.
I am 46 and have been into all things alternative for a very, very long time. I like this video, as I feel it reflects my attitude to "goth" clothing. If this is truly you, then over time you will naturally develop your own style, or if you like, version of goth. If I could leave you with anything, without being condescending I would say, remember, fashion you can buy, style you are born with. It's in everyone, find yours xxxx
So, I guess I'm a baby bat, as older goths call it, but; I'm going to be a freshman when school starts up again in August and I'm researching the history, clothing, music, etc but I'm honestly scared of what will happen in highschool with how I'll dress. ;-; And usually I'm called emo...when I look nothing like it???
I don't know if this helps or not (but it's what I did) I just started with makeup and wearing darker makeup and slowly going bigger kind of thing..then I did my hair, you can really do your hair whatever but I did black...and then I started finding outfits already existing in my wardrobe...and keeping what I like , selling what I didn't (that also gives you money for new clothes!!) !! And then you can go shopping and look for clothing you want!!
I lost my friends since grade 5 for wearing black, being quiet and wearing some makeup........ My teacher was only my fucking friend XD some boys ignore me and some other grades...I seem happy with it
I'm not goth in the slightest with my appearance, but I very much identify with the subculture with my interests, musical tastes, my favourite form of literature is goth etc I love your videos however, despite not being goth, and being from Derry it's cool to watch someone from Belfast, I love your channel so much aaahhh 💜
I’ve been binging videos like these that help with baby bats since I’m getting into the goth subculture! I’ve always had a love for dark and/or morbid things and I feel like I belong somewhere now
im currently learning about goth (sub)culture and getting into goth and im glad my parents are ok with it lol- i showed my mom some outfits i liked and she said they were cute and will get them for me and im excited about it
This was actually really helpful for me. I was goth back in Middle School and High School. And I just sort of slowly stopped dressing that way and doing my makeup. And Tbh I really miss it and want to go back. I know my family might not like it, but that's fine. And my little sister and my friends are super supportive of my goth side. I just feel like the past 7 or 8 years I've been wearing this costume to please everyone. And I'm tired of it and I want to evolve back into my true self. So thank you for being you and making this video. You have truly inspired me to not be afraid to be who I truly am.
I am not Goth but I just today I just listened to Goth music like Peter Murphy and Suixsie and the banshees and the damned and they are pretty good! I liked them because they have nice voices. I am not into screamo so I just found out that Goth music is not heavy metal at all and Goth music is like the type that David Bowie sings.
Marybeth Langendorf Screamo (skramz) is a type of emo music anyway, so don’t worry about it. And yeah, pretty much. If you liked Peter and Siouxsie, try The Merry Thoughts and The Sisters of Mercy.
I have a few questions. I've tried for a long time to be goth, but couldn't. I have a small budget and when I try to make myself look anything remotely close to goth it's usually not goth enough. Since I was thirteen I wanted to be a goth so bad, and all I can manages is black t-shirts with occasional matching leggings. Now I'm 23, and I am self-conscious about if I actually do manage to get serious about gothic styles, people will freak out and say that I've changed. Or even security guards watching me on campus or other public places. You listed three common elements in gothic subculture: music, fashion, and lifestyle. I've got the music and the lifestyle, but not so much the fashion. At a low budget, what types of clothing do you recommend? Where to get them? Hot Topic and Tripp are both pretty expensive. Also, do you make your own clothing? If so, what patterns do you recommend?
You can buy simple black shirts and cut them into goth. Get into DIY clothes, that is so much cheaper and makes you unique. Also like she said you can get many cheap clothes on Ebay or other second hand shops. Your question is very old, but I am replying if anyone else wants to know about this aswell.
I'm definitely very late to this but for anyone else who might be wondering the same thing now, ive found that layering is extremely effective, even if its just like a plain black outfit, maybe black jeans and a t shirt, adding 3 or 4 different length "gothic" necklaces really helps. Its how I started out, wearing my pentagrams (but only because I'm also pagan, please don't wear a pentagram if you're not pagan or practicing something like wicca, I know its used a lot in goth styles but its so disrespectful), and my favourite rings on a chain etc.
You’re so cute :) i am 35 now and still goth. You’re right it is definitely a lifestyle. It can be hard to gather a goth clothing collection of things u love, im so glad for these links and pieces of info!!
My girlfriend is Emo and she likes some goth music. There is some crossover especially in Post-Punk that sounds similar to Emo. Sad Lovers and Giants and The Cure are some good bands to start on.
comment patrol same , I love the aesthetic but I prefer punk rock music . 🖤🖤🖤🖤altho I listen to some goth inspired bands : the cure, killing joke and type o negative
I really want to get into goth but I didn’t know where to start, this video is really helpful. I really wish I could hang out with my friends cause they would help me with everything even though they aren’t goth. I’m not really good with makeup and have only really worn it like, twice? I already know my mom would be totally supportive, she’s never judged me for any of my life choices so far
I remember when I was little, I was at the mall with my mom and we stopped by Spencers, back when it wasn’t a sex-store XD Anyway, I was a huge fan of Tim Burton movies, and I saw these dolls that were based off the character in “Corpse Bride”. I fell in love! Now, each time I go to the mall I get less excited about visiting Spencers, or Hot Topic.
Me: loves looking punk, goth etc My personality: completely different, bubbly, helpful and otherwise 100% different to how it looks Me this year: I don’t care I can look like a goth but be how I am!
Yes! Honestly, the phrase you see around all the time "goth is a mindset" is the most elitist and gate keeping "goth requirement" around because now people think you have to act a certain way and have a certain personality. Basically have been born goth out of the womb. But for some reason seems to be so accepted, even by people who "hate elitism". But its also totally valid to like a dark fashion without being goth! Not being goth doesn't make you any less of who you are and what you enjoy.
_Some Wear Leather, Some Wear Lace: The Worldwide Compendium of Postpunk and Goth in the 1980s_ is a much better book in my opinion. Sure, it's not so much "baby bat" friendly but it's very informative and actually focuses on the original goth scene so you understand what it's like. I own Gothic Charm School and Jillian literally states that buying a load of black clothes and building a 'goth wardrobe' takes so much more effort than putting together a playlist of goth music you _actually_ like. And the subculture is based upon music, not black clothes. It gives newcomers entirely the wrong impression. Anyone can go into a mainstream high street shop at any time of the year and pick a load of black clothes off the shelf, not everyone likes goth rock.
Thank you! You said all that and it make me happy… I started to enter in the gothic culture like when I was 15 and people started to point at me saying that I was "satanic" for changing and staring to like and dress gothic culture, and you just prove that is something of what someone likes! I am still learning and with your channel I think I'll be updated!🖤🖤
the advice of not strictly copying someone but rather taking different bits and pieces you like from multiple different people is also very relevant in the art community when talking about finding one's own style styles usually emerge from multiple different styles when it comes to goth inspirations for me personally, kaya, jake. itsblackfriday and dre ronayne are like literally my icons and dre has also helped me accept my body a bit more. at least until it got worse. kaya's makeup and her outfits really inspire me. she's so pretty akjdsj
Goth, punk, and emo are all different subcultures and there's absolutely _nothing_ wrong with being a fan of all of them. It's just that there's no "emo goth punk" subculture to be apart of. You can listen to goth rock (Bauhaus, Siouxsie and the Banshees), emotive hardcore (Rites of Spring, Embrace) and punk rock like The Clash or Dead Kennedys (since emo and goth *did* come from punk) but as I said, it doesn't make you a "emo goth punk". And... no offence, but I find that a lot of the time, when people call themselves this, they don't actually listen to any goth, emo or punk music. They listen to My Chemical Romance or Black Veil Brides and think they're "goth punk emo" bands so that makes them a "goth punk emo". If they did have understanding of these subcultures, they wouldn't call themselves that in a first place. And that's not a dig at you, it's just I find this happens _a lot._ A lot of the time, most people are best off calling themselves “alternative”. It encompasses all alt. styles and you’re not claiming to be part of a specific subculture, so you don’t necessarily have to learn about anything.
im researching the gothic world and fashion for a school assignment and this helped me so much. I really want to respect the community and this is helping. (I already was subscribed to you but only now found this video :))
You are the type of goth i like. Like, the dress you are wearing, i love it. It's kindda like victorian, vintage, old fashioned and it's sooooooooo beautiful
Is it OK to wear Goth fashion and decorate accordingly, yet not be into the Goth culture? I once went to what was called a Goth prom with my best friend, and while I looked like I belonged, I did not feel like I belonged at all. (And it's a normal look for me. Think a real-life Caucasian Misa Amane-like appearance and style.)
EclairPunk13 it's not ok if you ask me. you're free to wear what you want but what's the point of going somewhere where you don't belong? sometimes I've seen normally dressed people having lots of fun at very specific musical parties (for example EBM can be hard to digest). sometimes having too many people that don't belong in the scene isn't good because they usually stare/bully people and you would expect a safe environment where you can enjoy yourself and you don't have to feel judged...
I think the most important thing is: being goth is about creativity and uniqueness, as least in my opinion. DON'T let anyone tell you that you have to do things to "fit in" in the goth community. Just no.
I don't know if you watch her channel but her name is Angela Benedict! She's great!:D she looks young but she says she's older than she looks and she talks about goth culture and many different things c: should check it out.
I have anxiety and I'm going to try to tell my parents that I want to be goth and that it would help me be happier with myself if I was. Thank you for giving me confidence!
I'm not Goth but am a creative soul and love your channel just for your outfits etc, I think you look really beautiful and have a really cheery personality. I'm new to your channel so looking through all your videos :) you never know I may go Goth one day lol. You're never too young to try something new I say! Keep making videos, I absolutely love them.
my mum when I was 13 "no you can not have that black nail polish and I'm buying you the purple top, you don't want the black one" everyone when I was 18 "it's just a phase, you'll be dressing differently in 6 months time" my mother in law when I was 25 "you should really stop dressing like that since you are a mother now" I'm 32 now and even though I have toned down my goth style a lot I still love it, I hate when people call it a phase when it's just a part of who we are
amy danced A good friend of mine has goth parents.
When I was like 7 my mom begged me not to be emo/goth...when I was 12 I started being darkly inclined ahahah
oh my gosh yes i love to wear black and its not a phase.
😍😍😍
soooo happy you're welcoming "babybats", and offering them help instead of shaming/insulting them like other goth people seem to do. 💜
+Toxic Tears and the reason i think I was scared was cuz of family and people I've dated.
+Toxic Tears cool video xxxxx ur georgous

Ocean sadly already learned that the hard way
They're probably Americans who keeps up with Kardashians or people like them. Ugh! Kardashians!
*lose
I’m alternative like sometimes I’m all black others I’m colorful. People think it’s weird because I don’t act “black “
Break the stereotypes with me fren!
hate that stereotype):
the first week of school is the hardest cuz everyone is trying to figure you out without just talking to you
what
it’s ignorant and annoying as fuck because they don’t know black people invented rock music
AWESOME! GOOD FOR YOU! Sorry to hear about your clueless family. Maybe they'll understand one day.
umm how tf is wearing black worshiping santan
@@justsomedeerwithinternetac2927 nu goth often has pentagrams, which may betaken as a satanic symbol, +a witchy vibe
And at least you have a sense of individuality. It’s takes a lot of courage to express how you feel inside.
I was starting out when in was in middle school and my aunt thought the same thing...she's southern and old. Don't be hard on them (not saying u are) they just dont understand.
Hot Topic has changed a lot. they do more pop-culture and metal now. My dad(ex-goth) still remembers when Hot Topic was still selling Goth things. lol
Ravanous Khaos hot topic is literally full of merch that’s not even goth or emo. it’s all riverdale and justin bieber bullshit
morticia - I went to a Hot Topic recently and you're not wrong.
Lol I live in the uk but I’ve been to hot topic once in Canada, and although there’s some band merch it’s mostly just pop culture stuff like Harry Potter and even Justin Bieber stuff😂it’s pretty lame lol
Acefire it’s so horrible. like why do they have to appeal to other buyers. if u want pop brands, go to forever 21 or something smh😒
morticia - I know right
Great advice. I remember being told it was a phase. I'm 41 now and still goth - haha!
25 and getting back in to it!!!! This was a great starter vid to kinda give me some ideas...lol

Junko Enoshima Same ;-;
Yeah, just slowly transform! Show them that goths don't support Satan and stuff
My parents didnt let me do this either when i was in Middle school, I'm 23 years old now and my parents STILL flip tf out if I wear black eyeshadow -.-
Liseth Flores-Nava Bleh I'm sorry
I love how you are not arrogant like many other goths who call everyone "posers", you just give really good advices in a respectful manner ^^
I love ur attitude and personally I'm not too much into goth but I like some of it and it doesn't matter how u dress it's what's inside and people judge goths a lot which is f up
Awe, ur cute
My brother is a Goth and he gets followed by security in shops he thinks it's funny and you btw are so pretty ^_^ i know sometimes its allways nice someone to say
I never understand that!XD Like, do you think if I was here to shoplift I would wear such an attention grabbing outfit and shoes that are clearly not made for a speedy get away!?
Dose listing to Metal make me a poser?
No unless you are a hipster jk
cartoonfanX3 people always think I'm gonna steal something just cuz I look like I would cause some sort of trouble or cuz I'm scary
That moment a security guard circles you 5 times, asks if you need any help, but you're just trying to vibe in the Young Adults section of Easons 😭
Sorry your parents are like that.
I just get fishnets from Walmart and cut them and I wear like black tight torn shorts then I buy leather black boots off of eBay and my brother gives me his old biker chains and I put them around my boots and for shirts I just wear a tank top and a lace cardigan and the i wear black or blood read lipstick, pale ass foundation and black ass eye shadow lol that's just how I dress for my gothic ass I don't buy expensive goth brands because one I'm cheap lol,and second I can't afford it so I mostly buy stuff from Walmart or eBay haha
and sometimes amazon
Leanne Valo666 that's awesome #inspiration
I love your profile pic
Leanne Valo666 i am not a creep but you ate gorgeous!
You have an amazing look. :)
my make up is goth, my clothing style is a mix of heavy metal and black metal, I do not listen to goth music, at all, except for Type O negative, I'm into Heavy metal and death metal. Cheers to being individuals!
heavy and death metal is goth music I mean belongs in that category
Elena Pintar No...It really doesn't, Not at all.
yesss!! Type O
Ariel Foxx type o negative is doom metal.
MusicFeeds TheSoul
I'm sweet Lolita, the total opposite of goth, but when I first started Lolita, I wanted to try goth, I went through this total gothic stage, and yet one day I woke up and I was like..
"Ya know, let's try pink and purple."
That was the begging of my Lolita journey!
That’s awesome
I love this. My journey was the exact opposite 😂
I'm not really a complex-clothed goth. Mostly just black shirts and pants, some combat boots or converse, and thick black eyeshadow. But I love the intricate style some goths posess... I just wish I looked good in that cool, dark complex chain of skirts and knee high boots and stuff...
Zenz0ha I found some nice knee high heeled faux leather boots at Payless that have lasted me a while.
I bet you would look great in the intricate goth outfits
It's confusing for me because I'm into more than one type of Goth style. I like the Victorian-inspired Goth, Pastel Goth, and Goth Lolita, so it's hard when I have a small budget and need to pick and choose with my wardrobe.
The bane of my life. Liking a million styles (not even only limited to the billions of styles of goth..) means you either have to have the money for like 20 different wardrobes, or you will suffer.x_x LOL
***** I like the sound of mixing and matching! (Goodwill is a Godsend for building up a new wardrobe, too.)
I dress depending on my mood.
I usually dress super dark but if I'm in a super good mood or feel 'like a little kid' I will add some pastel colours into my clothing.
Victorian inspired goth is so expensive and it took me a while to actually be able to dress the way I wanted because I had to save up for ages
Jodie Age account The struggle is real.
I enjoy the fashion, and the darker things in life, but I don't class myself as goth.
I'm alternative but because I take so much inspiration from all parts of the alternative lifestyles and music, and fashion that I don't label myself anything other than alternative.
same
+Masked Tactician Gothically inclined?
yeah me too
+Masked Tactician Same :)
Same , but anyway tending the most to goth
I got into goth in the late 1980's when I asked my mom how Robert Smith does his hair like that. She got out a comb and showed me how to rat your hair. Then I got a hold of her lipstick. It was like a fuse had been lit. back then we didn't use the word 'goth'. It was death rock
I am a Christian and love Jesus and I struggled my entire life with what I now realize is ONLY people's opinions. Now, at 48 I have come to realize I can still be Goth and have my faith and everyone can have their opinions and I just don't care anymore.
Time to invent business casual Goth...XD
It's already been invented. Look up Corp Goth.
Angela Self
I know about Corp Goth. I was thinking about business casual, not business formal.
Yeah...I realized that after I reread it. :)
+DJUniMekaju do you mean like polo shirts and khakis?
R0llinr0kk3r
Noooooo. I was more referring to tank tops covered with cardigans and the like.
Babybats often add amazing things into the look,I welcome them wholehearted.
that shirt really compliments your hair ❤
This is so nice. I've had goth elitists comment on my social medias saying that I'm a fake goth and a poser just because I wear color every now and then! I used to be insecure about that but now I can wear all pink and still confidently say "I'm just a goth person who happens to also like the color pink!"
I feel like when you're younger, you spend too much time trying to follow the subculture to a T, but once you're older, you make your own rules on what goth really means to you.
I have no interest in being goth but this is the 5th video of yours I’ve watched tonight because you’re so sweet and positive
But what annoys me, is they put it to stereotypes, blame it on a "phase" and then decide to try force me to get it. *Why?*
I really get that pink thing but I’m glad my parents are ok with it as long as I have good grades and am a nice person but I hate how much I’ve been told by everyone like the girls and boys at school and how much they tell me I should wear pink since it’s a “ girl color “ and that I should wear dresses and I should wear bright colors like shut tf pinkie pie and sit down
@@imswagurnot742 "stfu pinkie pie and sit down" lmao truth
You know what? I'm not actually a goth at all, even though I am very fascinated by the goth subculture and all its different forms. But I just still love watching your videos because they are just so incredibly positive and sweet. :) It's just so refreshing, especially with all the hatred in and around youtube.
Keep being true to yourself, because you are truely awesome!
haha, when i decided to go goth there weren't such a things as tumblr and pinterest .. this is making me feel old :(
They weren't there for me either, but they're around now~
yess! i checked some of them out since you mentioned it and there are so many talented, inspirational people around it's downright awesome!
+Iron Star ikr. How does one "decide" to go goth? You either _are_ goth or you're not.
tɦɛ ʀiɳg ѳԲ ɗɛɱoɳร "decide" like in "ok thats cool enough, i'm gonna join the crew". it's not like anyone is born this way :p
RS
Not necessarily born that way but molded that way at an early age.
Your eye makeup is friggin' perfect. Seriously, I could watch this video all day just for that.
I really love the combination of the black makeup and your contacts. :)
Yes! Same here! I like goth the best, though I also like other styles. I grew up with a gothic sister. I rather be goth than a Kardashian clone.
I'm not a goth but I do love your type of fashion
Your confidence is so amazing that I cannot express it in words. I have always wore black and dressed on the 'darker side' but never wanted to call myself 'goth' because I enjoy more of modern screamo music rather than the music from the 80's. I just can't get into it for some reason and for years I have been bashed for it. Thank you so much, Toxic for your words of wisdom and positive message
you don't have to like the same exact things to be goth, enjoy whatever music you like!
I absolutely love this video. You are not at all condescending and you are so friendly and accepting. No elitism, which drives me crazy!
Ever since I was little i've been hella into the goth/punk scene.
I finally have the freedom to express myself and im really excited to learn more about the fashion and history around it.
Thanks for the video! Ur literally so pretty btw❤
As an aspiring/newcomer/babybat, This is very helpful for me. 🖤🖤🖤🖤🖤
I've always been goth, but I haven't always expressed it on the outside due to different job requirements or social awkwardness of just wanting to fit in. But, inside, I have been goth for about 11 years (or, I guess, really since forever) , and I'm finally in a place where I can really express myself again :D I don't really, nor have I ever, claimed to be or subscribed to any particular subgenres of goth, I do my own thing and make my own style, pick a little from that and a little from this :)
was snow white a goth because of her skin as white as snow her lips as red as rose and hair as black as a ravens wings so was she goth ?
I like to believe so :') Haha!
I need to draw a goth Snow White nowwwww
It was obviously a joke, ease up.
funnily enough snow white is a look that some will portray (accessorised ofc) when building their look :)
+Toxic Tears were you wearing contacts in the video???
Brilliant video 💗 I lost friends when I started to get into punk music when I was younger. Girls in my class wrote me a letter and left it in my locker and it was basically offering to give me a girly makeover so boys would like be and so I could stop being weird 😂 it makes me laugh now but at the time I was like wtf! People like that aren't your friends and there's no need to entertain assholes like that. Xxx
+EllieJayden Omg that is amazing, what even!XD People are mental. Yeahh exactly. If anything, becoming who I am weeded out the fake friends~
You really do learn who your real friends are when you start to be yourself. It was nuts but it kinda shaped who I am today, I don't care what anyone thinks of my style. xx
Those girls basically wanted to help you. If you can’t accept your difference, how do you expect others to accept you?
My inner goth is crying, Thank you for this!
My biggest thing that is stopping me is being worried about other people's opinions and all the mean things they might say to me 🤦♀️
I didn't grow up with Goth music, but last year, I discovered Goth music and I LOVED it...even to this day 🖤🖤🖤🖤🖤🖤🖤🖤🖤🖤🖤🖤🖤🖤
I actually just recently started looking for goth music and it has been great!!
Is it okay to just dress 'goth'? I know a little bit about the history but I never claim to be goth. so is that okay?
why wouldnt it? and who would keep you from doing it?
You do you. You don't have to know the whole history or do anything goths do. If you like the attire that shows you appreciate it. And if someone says you can't wear anything gothic cause you don't know what it is or calls you a poser give them one of these🖕🏼🖕🏼
WR CJ What do you mean with "acting goth"?
I am in the same boat. I wouldn't judge anyone else for it because I like dressing like that too, but I also don't wanna be called a poser or anything.
Personally, I wear whatever style I want... I don't want to do it offensively, of course! Some days I really feel like wearing something more bohemian, and it's a lot of fun. Other days I feel like wearing something darker, more goth-inspired, and that's okay too. I don't label myself as either boho or goth--I just see certain styles that I like, and I wear them. and I think that's okay :)
Most genuine RUclipsr I've ever watched!
"babybat" That is so adorable, what a wonderful term for new goths
Idiots.
i just realise my style in a mix of yours and josh dun

JISHWA!❤️
*gasp* JISH
first, JIWSH. And same
Oh I love you. This video is perfect! I was in such a bad mood too, after listening to that show 'Deadly Women', because they said that 'goth' and 'devil worship' go hand in hand >:|
xx
+ReeRee Phillips Ugh; the stereotypes.
And then you can go shopping and look for clothing you want!!
did you graduate yet
Tell us how did it go?
I lost my friends since grade 5 for wearing black, being quiet and wearing some makeup........
My teacher was only my fucking friend XD
some boys ignore me and some other grades...I seem happy with it
Whats wrong with wearing black?
I think wearing black generate certains negatives effects for example people might ignore you
They were not your friends then.
I'm not goth in the slightest with my appearance, but I very much identify with the subculture with my interests, musical tastes, my favourite form of literature is goth etc
I love your videos however, despite not being goth, and being from Derry it's cool to watch someone from Belfast, I love your channel so much aaahhh 💜
It's been 6 months since i took the courage to be myself~ 🖤
(And i'm RLLY happy) X3
I’ve been binging videos like these that help with baby bats since I’m getting into the goth subculture! I’ve always had a love for dark and/or morbid things and I feel like I belong somewhere now
im currently learning about goth (sub)culture and getting into goth and im glad my parents are ok with it lol- i showed my mom some outfits i liked and she said they were cute and will get them for me and im excited about it
same over here! i wish you the best of luck trying to get more into goth :)
I’m not getting started but I just want more tips. But this really helped me anyway!
As a babybats, I'm really thankful to you. This video really helps me. Sorry for my English, I'm a french girl.
Thank you, I'm glad! Don't worry, your English is wonderful!
Thank you so much for this! As a "babybat" it's nice to have help videos like these. I always learn so much.
Did you ever hear of the Wish app? It is cool because they have a whole bunch of Gothy things without being listed under "goth."
Marybeth Langendorf
Screamo (skramz) is a type of emo music anyway, so don’t worry about it.
Vivian Hayes the wish app has really expensive stuff for dirt cheap. clothes, makeup. I've even seen the brand demonia shoes! hope this helped.
Thank you! I was really nervous because a lot of people were saying there were do's and don'ts
Great vid. My daughter (11) walked in the room and said hey awesome she's goth!
+Debbie Buckland Why, hello there :)
Isaki Tahashi hello ;) fancy seeing u here
I made myself a knee-length dress using a black corset, a black maxi-dress and some purple fabric trim so dark it looks black in low light.
I'd love to see!!!!
Excellent!
I love the goth aesthetic but I can't get into the goth music /: I'm too emo for it
sigh
My girlfriend is Emo and she likes some goth music. There is some crossover especially in Post-Punk that sounds similar to Emo. Sad Lovers and Giants and The Cure are some good bands to start on.
SAME BRO UGH I LOVE MY EMO MUSIC IM STRUGGLING
comment patrol same , I love the aesthetic but I prefer punk rock music .
I love thrifting old clothes. I always find nice treasures. I get giddy when i find black with lace.
I remember when I was little, I was at the mall with my mom and we stopped by Spencers, back when it wasn’t a sex-store XD
Anyway, I was a huge fan of Tim Burton movies, and I saw these dolls that were based off the character in “Corpse Bride”. I fell in love!
Now, each time I go to the mall I get less excited about visiting Spencers, or Hot Topic.
Those stores aren't as good as they used to be. Very sad. (Jan Griffiths).
I love everything that's"goth" especially the fashion but my parents were not okay with it I rlly love it any advice?
Try getting black nail polish sounds very strange but it was how I started off and it was small but it made me feel a bit rebellious and different
No dislikes i am so happy! I love the video it's helpful
I love that you referenced Jillian. She was a dear friend of mine in Seattle in the 90's. I love your channel too!
I found several copies of a book in my library at college about the evolution of gothic fashion, it was fascinating. The lacy outfits were gorgeous.
Me: loves looking punk, goth etc
My personality: completely different, bubbly, helpful and otherwise 100% different to how it looks
Me this year: I don’t care I can look like a goth but be how I am!
I AM THE EXACT SAME. I am very smiley and bubbly, it shocks people to the core lol
SAME
You look so damn good lately
Good book buy for babybats: Gothic Charm School.
Thanks!
I'm really new to this...thanks for helping this little babybat learn to spread her wings
the advice of not strictly copying someone but rather taking different bits and pieces you like from multiple different people is also very relevant in the art community when talking about finding one's own style
styles usually emerge from multiple different styles
when it comes to goth inspirations for me personally, kaya, jake. itsblackfriday and dre ronayne are like literally my icons and dre has also helped me accept my body a bit more. at least until it got worse.
kaya's makeup and her outfits really inspire me. she's so pretty akjdsj
oh I'm 11 and I have one friend she's a emo and I'm goth
4 of my friends are emo and I've never gotten along with a goth before
@@skysilenced2184 lol
Your parents let you be goth at 11 years old?I'm 14 and they don't let me!
my parents kind of gave up on pushing my style around when they realize i have been in my so called “phase” for 7 years now.
Omg I love ur Sombra profile pic hehe
Thank you for being healthy and supportive to my little babybat self 🖤
Always wanted to be goth but I never knew where to start , this is really going to help me
should i be just one subculture? because i see me as an emo-punk-goth because i like all of them ^^ is that wrong?
I am sort of the same way. There is no real answer except for You just be You.
And that's not a dig at you, it's just I find this happens _a lot._
A lot of the time, most people are best off calling themselves “alternative”. It encompasses all alt. styles and you’re not claiming to be part of a specific subculture, so you don’t necessarily have to learn about anything.
@@edwardsdistress5599 Mcrs influences are bands like sunny day real estate, lifetime, and the promise ring how they not real emo?
@@2emo2function I'm invested in the subcultures, and I still think MCR is alt/emo
I'm too lazy to be goth xD
I can't stop staring at her eyebrows
im researching the gothic world and fashion for a school assignment and this helped me so much. I really want to respect the community and this is helping. (I already was subscribed to you but only now found this video :))
You are the type of goth i like. Like, the dress you are wearing, i love it. It's kindda like victorian, vintage, old fashioned and it's sooooooooo beautiful
Btw, i'm goth but like a type of goth that i feel it's more.... comfortable..... pls don't hate....
+EclairPunk13 be yourself mate. if you like goth clothes but dont like the culture thats fine.
smidget whittington Thank you, that helps me feel better about it. ^_^
EclairPunk13 im glad =)
