      I agree with this. I’m a violinist and a flautist.
      It was super interesting for me to see vocal work being picked apart, whether for improvement or to show what a good job they did.
      I really wish I was more trained vocally. I don’t think there’s ANYTHING that beats voice.

    Finally a "vocal coach" who is actually a vocal coach. I can't stand all these people posting videos who think just because you can match pitch and happen to have people who pay you money to try and teach them how to do the same you're entitled to call yourself a coach. Thank you for sharing your training with us :)

    This was a great instructional video. I never realized if you mispronounce or leave off certain syllables it actually sounds more like the word. Also hitting the front syllable with an almost staccato glottal hit vs. leaving it open really makes for a big difference in the impact of a word. Neat stuff.

      Thanks for the response! I actually find myself singing a lot more just to figure out what sounds better. I wish I'd had a singing coach in junior high. I really love it but instead ended up playing a few instruments. Your hints are like voodoo. Changing how you sing words to make them better than when spoken is just magical. It definitely opened my eyes to something I'd been missing. I was like, "How are some people so much better at singing?" While some do have crazy natural talent like perfect pitch and 5 octave ranges (Mitch Grassi fkn amazing), I see a lot of it is due to proper technique. Thanks!

    Fascinating breakdown of some wonderful vocals but really isn't it obvious that there are all miming for this promo video - these are not their original studio vocals were seeing (hearing yes - I hope!) - it's a video meant to be watched! Surely mimed video performances can't be properly reviewed in the same way as a truly 'live' studio performance. They are bloody great though xx

    • @okebaram
      @okebaram 5 лет назад +2

      That is what I found funny the fact that she was critiquing based on their body movements but in reality, they are not singing live, she didn't realize that and she put so much emphasis on meaningless movements

    • @neerajemanuel7771
      @neerajemanuel7771 2 года назад

      @@okebaram But with whatever I've heard from them, they say they'd play the original audio in the background and sing along with it for videoing. So technically, they do sing here, and I've gone through a lot of performances of Tiffany and she just really tends to be animated (not complaining, although being a big fan of her). Moreover, I guess they don't even know how to lipsync, I guess as they've only been singing live all the days of their lives...
      Just my opinion tho

    • @okebaram
      @okebaram 2 года назад

      @@neerajemanuel7771 No that is not correct. I once thought some of their official videos were live singing too, because I did not understand like I do now. They always sing live when they perform at events, but their official videos of their songs are produced as music videos. I know Tiffany is animated live or not, she is still being herself whether or not she is singing or lip-syncing, Lip-syncing won't make them animate or emote differently. But for their official videos, as is very common and reasonable with music videos, the only audio you hear is the pre-recorded "studio" vocals, not any sound from them singing along during the video, even if they made any sounds while they were lip-syncing during the video shoot. The video is also done multiple times and pieces are merged together in editing to show chosen angles and best footage. Not only is this a fact that anyone with sufficient understanding or experience of music production at a sufficient level will undoubtedly see from their videos, but they have literally said this themselves in a response to me. There is no need to state this for everyone to know, however. Most people do not have enough understanding of this stuff and would think they are singing live. And it should be that way, as long as there was no claim by the musicians that was false.

    I think part of the beauty of Voctave is their unity and diversity...so many different types of voices and training, ranges, styles. It keeps it from being bland or purely technical or mechanical. Also, Sarah (red hair) is an alto and Ashley sings soprano/alto. They are wonderful musicians, though, and have adjusted and trained their voices to fit in where needed according to Jamey's arrangement and their vision for the finished piece. Thanks for the reaction to teach us what is going on and give us alternative ideas on how some other trained singers may choose to interpret and present songs.

    Great video. If you read this, I'd love to know why you feel that unstressed consanants "Voic-Es" need those open E sounds etc? If it's just giving it space I think it needs to be stressed that over cooking a weak syllable can be seen as poor diction as well. It was certainly the fashion for a long time to keep those final syllables open when singing in English but it's slightly frowned upon now if it's too over done. Anyways, interesting videos. Thanks for putting your thoughts online.

    • @Tarasimonstudios

      Corinne Spencer for sure! But that’s just it. I don’t want my singers to “over cook” the vowel. But if you don’t sing a true “e” you’re actually singing the word wrong and making it sound like “voiciz” which is farther from the original intention of the pronunciation of the word even when spoken. Hope that makes sense and helps!

    People who are putting in more effort to get more power instead of using other techniques to hit the notes easier are VALUED IN A CHOIR. Not that Tara was saying they weren't valued, but a lot of people don't realize that just because you don't use all of the classical or operatic techniques to get volume and purity with less effort DOES NOT MEAN YOU AREN'T A GOOD SINGER OR THAT YOU'RE NOT VALUED!
    Sometimes a choir needs that. A lot of singers who've studied techniques long enough can hit the high notes easier without straining too much or moving their body, but some songs and some performances are far better off having someone on the solo who is giving it everything they have physically and vocally.
    I've seen Baritones audition for solos who are great at belting in the Tenor Register with power and emotion and REAL EFFORT behind it, get shunted to the sidelines and discouraged because a Tenor can hit the same note with less effort, and that can make for an emotionless and frankly boring performance to watch.
    I would greatly prefer to watch a performance where the soloist is very visibly giving it his all and putting emotion into the song over a soloist who has done this a dozen times already and is purely focusing on posture and vocal health, 8 times out of 10.
    And I'm not saying that singers shouldn't take care of their voice, God knows Adele gives her performances everything she has and her voice is suffering because of it, I'm just saying a performance can greatly benefit from a little intentional strain and vocal effort in the proper places.

    You should react to "A million dreams" by Voctave and Vocal Majority. By the way all the arrangement are by Jamey Ray, a tenor member of Voctave.

    Tara, You seem to really know your stuff. I mean that with the utmost respect. I personally can't sing anymore. When I was younger, I had a voice worth hearing, a long time ago. Several items you may or may not respond to. I really like the fact that you don't feel the need to listen to 6 or 8 words, then go into a 5 minute soliloquy and you forget what the number was. Thanks for not ruining this review. I love Voctave. They have to be the best accepella group going today.
    Do you or can you just listen to a song and simply enjoy the artist(s) and their music for what it's for without feeling the need to disect it?? I think you have reviewed David Phelps before, but have you ever heard of a beautifully talented young lady (17?) named Lucy Thomas?? She is from England and has a wonderful voice. Sometimes her younger sister, Martha will join her for a duet. Perhaps you might look her up. I believe she just released her 4th CD. Thank you for allowing us less knowledgeable folks a chance to learn a little. Ron

    I am a great fan of Voctave. I haven’t studied voice since many years ago in college, but I have sung in Choruses performing classical vocal works, as well as ‘pop’ on stage at the Broward Center For The Performing Arts in Fort Lauderdale, FL. Her comments were right on point.

    Finally a vocal coach that call the Altos for Altos and not stubburnly want to name them Mezzos... :) ... And I stubbornly say as I allways do... "If I want to be inpressed, Im often that by Sopranos..But If I want to feel some great emotion. Its by Altos..." :)
    In my Case theres only one exeption to that rule (Alive).. And its the Lyric Soprano SoHyang...
    And you Tara are as allways great ! / Love from Stockholm, Sweden / J

    Of course, these vocal harmonizations are "perfect". Great vocal level (Kate Lott (soprano) blow my mind, just like that...).
    But let me point out one thing, an important thing. I've seen this performance many times, but only recently one of the noticed it and admits that she's absolutely right - the further in the chronology we move (I'm talking about the years when these films and their music were made), the less our requirements are and the vocals are getting worse.
    Because let's not compare "Snow White" from 1937 and this beautiful performance to the current Disney princesses. The voice was perfect, crystal clear. Currently, it's just a pop version of these achievements.

    I totally disagree with your point about singing "conversational". Disney songs often *dont* have the singers end their notes or words with open vowels. Plus, its evident that when the singer does finish a word with a closed consonant that they are choosing to do it that way. Usually to mimic the original recording where that was very common. Open vowels are harder to understand meaning and hear the words, because we dont speak it that way. Thats why Disney chooses to end most words in the way we speak them; the song's purpose is to tell a story, not to be a great song (it just happens that Disney music is great music!)

    I had to stop at 6:44 because I was taken with you. If you're not married by now or in a serious relationship, I am going to make a fool out of myself right now and ask for your number. My brothers and I have been singing for decades and they would kick me if I didn't message you right now. My dad died almost 2 years ago and we played, "All Is Well" by Voctave...and amazing arrangement. You are a gem and tell it like it is, Tara. Keep it up. You will make better singers out of us yet! :)

    New fan of yours! You should check out all of voctave Disney songs. Before Kate Lott ( the 1st soprano) joined, there was another lady, she also is amazing. And of course Disney love medley with Kristin Maldonado and Jeremy Michael Lewis, Kate hits a note that will blow you away. Rachel Potter sings with them on a medley but it was E.J Cardona on Out There from the Hunchback of Norte Dame that blew it away. It is actually called Disney trio Animazement instead of voctave but it's still Jamey Ray's voctave. The voctave fly medley is the one with a lady in a green and black striped dress that can hit some notes.

    I have to disagree with you on the singer for Colors of the Wind. The song itself is sang as a conversation with John Smith, so it would make sense to sing it more conversationally with the "r"s.

    Are we going to talk about the fact that you have the most infectious, natural, and genuine smile, Miss Tara? I was literally smiling the whole time as I watched this. As for your spot-on remarks and feedback that reflect years (if not decades) of experience, knowledge, classical training, and profound gift (you have a Divine voice, yourself), I believe it speaks mighty volumes of who you are as an artist, but most importantly, as a person.
    From an internet stranger, thank you for being who you are, Miss Tara. Such a treasure, indeed. : )
