  • In this film we look at a period around the mid 1960's to 1970 and what turned out to be arguably the most influential period for the sport gyroplane [certainly in the UK]. It also a tragic episode in aviation history that was likely fully avoidable.

I worked with Ed Neilski at LAX he was into the Bensen and flew all the tricks. One of his friends flew airshows. He had a small American flag mounted on a piece of coat hanger wire. The wire failed, hit the prop and flew forward through his back. Ed explained they were not that easy to fly. You have to be aware of the wind direction when close to the ground. You can lose lift when turning into a tail wind. He sold his copter to a fellow that was not mechanically inclined. He was killed when he failed to safety the rotor nut. That was the problem with the Bensen they took experience to fly and maintain.
"The Piper Cub is the safest airplane in the world; it can just barely kill you." Max Stanley.

Very interesting, I wondered why gyros were never popular. Good work 👍👍👍

Hi yes as we will see there is a constant cycle from popularity to death trap and things trough until enough time passes and people forget. As we speak we are in a trough as these things get smashed too often in take off and landing accidents - not fatal but the insurers have had enough. The issue is a combination of poor regulation and poor training.

Gyrocopter flying club I started flying R22 and had a dynamic roll over in training and moved to the R44. It then became prohibitively expensive for me to fly thus went to fixed wing. After a year or so started flying gyros, rotary buzz but without expense. However after 5 hours I moved jobs to Dubai and can’t fly them here. Keep up the good work and thanks for the reply. Stay safe👍👍👌👌

Now that flight training is available for gyroplanes, things are MUCH SAFER....

Nicely put together videos. You mention poor regulation. Care to expand your thoughts?

Brian Pearson hi Brian thanks for the kind comments. Yeah it’s a good question, I’ll make the next film on the subject.

    Most accidents are pilot error
