One can see why Buddy liked watching Carl. The only rock drummer I have seen who embodies the rich, fluid, technically perfect style of the master, though in a prog/rock genre, of course. His solos, along with those of Neil Peart are things of beauty and wonders to behold. Carl is certainly among those, like Neil, who sit on the apex of the rock percussion world.

don't go overboard. Buddy liked him because he dated his daughter, and was a rock drummer with traditional grip. Carl is less than average. I don't care who he played with. He can't keep time, and is the Lars of his day.

I realize this is an old post but I was at that concert also and it remains one of the best memories of my life. As a musician I've always considered Palmer one of the best ever, but that night blew me away. When they did "Pirates" without the orchestra I was bracing for disappointment since that is such a great arrangement. Suddenly I could hear the string section playing...... it was Carl playing the violin parts on the drums. The man is a genius

There’s a great story about a young Carl staking out a hotel in London where BR was staying with the hopes of meeting his hero. Apparently, Buddy was taken with Carl and invited him to hang out. They ended up becoming pretty good friends after that.

I watch Tommy Lee solos and then go to my own kit and play pretty much all of it. Same with the Appice brothers and Cozy Powell. I watch Ian Paice solos and Tommy Aldridge solos, then go to my own kit and can play most of it. I watch this solo, then go to my own kit and think, "You know, I could make a set of bookshelves out of that."

I've been playing drums for over 50 years. I saw him live on the old California Jam shows on TV as a kid. He was cool, but his strange tempo changes bothered me later. After many years, I definitely admire his skills . Who else can pull off a snare drum solo with so much authority? He's the shit. Still is.

    Shut the front door !!
I first became aware of Carl's talent with Asia, then I flowed backwards to ELP. Emerson, Howe, wetton, Lake and Palmer are the 5 horsemen of the musical apocalypse in my opinion. True musicians, they do this for the art and not for the money like too many so called 'artists' nowadays.
