      Will the Arc Control software be available on Linux? Did they mention support for Linux or is it just wishful thinking?

    • @LinuxForEveryone
      @LinuxForEveryone  2 года назад +1

      @@pranze3484 There is basic support for the Arc series GPUs in the kernel, and even some advanced support for things like resizable BAR.

    It would be great to see a system76 with Intel Arc or Battlemage graphics as the first launch device. You get top tier FOSS drivers, a competitive graphics offering and best of all the bragging rights to say we are purely an open source company. I'm surprised that these Linux laptop manufactures have stuck with Nvidia, literally the worst offender for Linux drivers, hopefully Intel can change this.

  • @awolsam
    @awolsam 2 года назад +16

    I hope the Intel GPU's will have functional open-source drivers for OpenCL/compute. That are functional with professional software like Blender and Davinci Resolve. AVI1 encoding is very good news, patended codecs need to get replaced.

    I'd *really* like to see pressure applied to Intel to get Arc Control over to Linux, but at present it doesn't seem likely.
    Question was asked by a user in the Intel Insiders Discord, "Is Arc Control available in Linux?", to which the answer (from Bryce Furuya, Intel Arc Community Advocate) was "There are currently no plans to release Arc Control on non-Windows operating systems."
    I mean, never say never right? this is an evolving market opportunity for Intel, so things could change at some point.

    This was excellently explained, Sir! AV1 could potentially save a lot of power as well as a lot of space for creators who keep back-ups of all their previous work and I am excited as hell to see what Intel does next. I'm also glad Intel seem to be invested in Linux on open source, especially when their employees have contributed so much code to the kernel.

    Serious question: Having come from Mac, why do people _want_ those driver software suite things? That's hand down one of my *least* favorite parts of dealing with GPU drivers on my Windows work machine. I legitimately like not having to deal with that on Mac/Linux where things generally "just work" and you don't have to deal with 3rd party crap. It's described here as "less bloated", but that's still makes it a pretty hard sell. Honestly I've never given the AMD catalyst software (or whatever it's called?) a fair shake beyond a skim and then disabling everything. (and of course cursing when I find it's still capturing control-keys meant for the program I actually meant to use) It all seems like bloatware to work around other badly made games, and speaking personally I don't have the patience for that on a game-by-game basis.

    • @someyoutubeuser9077
      @someyoutubeuser9077 2 года назад

      I agree completely. - Nobody wants to have those ugly software suites installed.
      On the other hand, for certain tasks you need to have it installed, e.g. for overclocking your GPU or for merging multiple displays into one virtual one.
      Ideally settings like that would be standardized and exposed in the OS settings.
      But bloatware-creating manufacturers will stay bloatware-creating manufacturers until they are absolutely forced to change.

    I am grateful to your channel context. I am hoping you will do a follow up update to this video perhaps using the Arc A-770 using the latest intel drivers on Linux there have been positive improvements both in the gaming and content creator venues. I purchased Acer Predator OC A-770 16GB DDR6 recently. The performance on DaVinci Resolve has been exceptional, specifically when coupled with a 13th Intel gen cpu. Again thanks for your hard work. Continued success to you and to your channel.

    the only things that i hoping theyll come with are :
    1) solid performance that rival current gpu (1080p is enough. no need to be the best)
    2)lower tdp/watt usage
    3)reasonable price
    if these ARC gpus have it, ill buy it. no question. then ill pair it with the upcoming ryzen 5 7600x bcoz it the only new cpu with ddr5 that consume less power (65W)
