I find that I DNF in both circumstances. More so the “just lose interest” way but every once in a while I come across a book where something hits me wrong and it’s an immediate “oh hell no!” I’ve heard good things about Kate Clayborn but haven’t read any of her work. And your comment about way too slow and no burn made me laugh. I can relate! 😂💜
When a book hits you wrong it's so hard to continue! I just had a book that I DNFed on page 8 because the lack of a copy editor was glaringly obvious (self-pub, didn't punctuate dialog correctly so you couldn't tell who was talking GAH)
I DNF under both circumstances. I quit a couple of books in May just because I realized I wasn't interested in picking them up anymore, and then a couple more because I read a sentence and I just COULDN'T anymore.
I saw a video essay not long ago about why My Fair Lady doesn't really land well with current day audiences, and basically it was all about how it's not really a romance, and it doesn't feel satisfying for Eliza to end up with Higgins... was interesting, and was able to point out some reasons to me why I don't care much for the overall story (though the music is great). I'm also soon going to make a video on all my DNFs so far this year. I'd say most of the time my DNFs are a gradual "eh, I'm not caring about this, can't be bothered." But I do have an occasional "um, hard no" moment too 😂
That sounds like a great video essay! Ooo, it would be interesting to pair that with You've Got Mail/Shop Around the Corner as romances that aren't really romances. 🤔 Best of luck with your DNF video! Losing interest is the death of so many reads 😅
For me, DNFs are somewhere in the middle of what you mentioned. Basically, if I am reading something and run into a scene that brings me out of the story, I tend to set it down for that moment an try another time. If I find that I'm never in the mood to try again, I'll still usually give it another shot and read some more to see if I can get immersed in the story again, or if I'm brought out by another scene. Sometimes I will just have a book that I immediately DNF for something super not my taste, but I think more of them fall into the give-a-few-chances category.
@@AlwaysDoing Sush recently mentioned that he thinks I don't DNF enough since I often do keep trying with books and finish things I suspected I should DNF earlier. 😂 I was amused since I still DNF way more than Sush or even most people on Booktube I know.
I so struggle with DNFs because I’m such a completionist. But when I do DNF it’s because I start forcing myself to pick up the book. I’m trying to remind myself that there too many good books out there for me to force myself to read anything.
I DNF when I'm just "not feeling" the book. Could be the characters, writing, or genre. I try not to wallow too much over dnfing because there are so many other books out there!
I read a lot of books on audio and sometimes I dnf because the narrator doesn’t work out. This does seem a bit unfair to the author so sometimes I get a print copy from the library. But usually I dnf because I’m bored. One recent exception is a book by Iain M Banks which contained a scene of marital r&pe that I will never forgive him for. I have sworn never to read anything by him again.
Oh, narrators are definitely a factor! And like you say, not really the author's fault per ce. The Iain M Banks book, what?! 😱 I would have dropped the book into a blazing fire, as well. Awful 👿
Oh gosh I have also been struggling with some of my romance reading lately and DNF ing a lot too. It is definitely cathartic to talk about it online 😂 Lately I have been DNFing when I reach a breaking point in the story (usually the first sex scene) and I just feel like the author won’t be able to change my mind about the characters or story
Oh no, I hope you're making your way out of your romance slump! That's interesting how there are "breaking points" for you in a story, I've never thought of them that way, oo.

Some sometimes the writing is the exact wrong thing in that moment! Good on you for recognizing it early.
I usually DNF when I realize I am never wanting to pick the book up. It is rarely because I dislike a particular topic or plot type.
The inertia method! A book that is at rest on the bedside table will remain at rest... until you move it into the DNF pile 😆

You are so kind giving books second and third chances 😭

YES! When you run out of books in the world, then you can go back and give the DNFs another go 😉

YES - life is too short to read mediocre books, high five! 🙏🏻

re: 7 Nights to Surrender I HATE when the POV character is written that way!! such a massive red flag
Right?! Even if he's going to be redeemed later, I don't need to see the slime from the inside of his head 🥴
