Fit GRX levers to XT callipers

- Fitting GRX levers to pretty much any shimano callipers is possible. In this vid we are fitting a GRX st-rx810 lever to a Shimano XT m8000 calliper with a Shimano Saint hose in the middle.
Just did this job this afternoon, used GRX shifters with XT calipers and 180mm rotors on a gravel bike bult from a MTB frame.
The pistons in the calipers are the same size as the road caliper pistons so there is no problem with long lever pulls or suchlike due to volume mismatches.
Yip, I had that mismatched piston problem when trying out about 4 diffrent levers from the "lever bucket" for an unknown motorbike brake on a kz500
Excellent video! I'm changing from SLX front shifter/brakes to a drop bar set up using GRX600. This is good info as I can leave my SLX calipers set up they way they are and just run new hydraulic lines.
Happy to have helped :)
Hope the upgrade goes well!
since m6000 and r7000 gen, they used the same oliver and braze pin called bh-90, so it works.
Thanks, Marky! Great video. I just hope the GRX levers are also going to be compatible with my Deore 4 pistons calipers...
Did it all fit ok?
Nice !
Hello, I have MTB lever slx7100 and grx810 caliper. What hose kit do i need to get compatibility ? Thank you..
@Marky's Bike Lab - will an XT or XTR brake lever work with a flat mount GRX disc brake caliper? I'm thinking of replacing my drop bars with a straight bar for a more relaxed riding position. I have an XT brake lever but I couldn't find an adapter to fit my post mount XT disc brakes onto my road frame so I was thinking of getting GRX flat mount disc brakes but am not sure if they would be compatible with each other. Thanks in advance for your help.
If you get a XT / XTR brake lever compatible hose end (M8 nut + olive and pin) and grx compatible end it will work
@@adamgabrys1451 i have the same query too. There are lots that say it doesn't work, i.e. doesn't give the right feel. Have you tried it and know for sure?
@@Funky_Geek hi, it works I have it on my bike - the GRX levers with XT calipers.
So how did it work out? I'm getting some pieces together to do this same thing.
Yes, they work great. I had to bleed them quite soon after the initial set up (probably too busy making a vid to focus on getting all the air bubbles out) but now they feel great. I would do it again.
is it possible to combine xt calliper with shimano 105 shifters (r7025 - short hand)...?
Should be, if they use a standard shimano hose then it's just a case of joining the 105 to the top of the hose instead of the GRX.
will this work when it is reversed? xt lever and grx caliper
Almost all shimano brakes seem to be compatible with each other. Just use the hose that fits the calliper + the "normal" connection between lever and hose.
Will XT lever work with GRX calipers? I want to fit a flat bar on my gravel bike.
Should do, just need to make sure you have the right connections at either end of the hose.
Wonder if that would also work with BR-8020 or 8120 4-piston calipers. It should, anybody tried it? These GRX calipers are not powerful enough bikepacking IMO
The 8120 seems to work fine with the "old" XT lever (the one the caliper in the video was removed from), so it should also be compatible with the GRX levers.
Should just need a road flatmount to mtb caliper adaptor if it's going on a road bike (or gravel bike with road caliper mounts). Straight fit if it's an MTB frame and fork.
PS the XT single piston caliper mated to grx levers (with decent rotors) stop the bike pretty well.
Have you ridden this thing yet? Been curious ever since the first video how the geo worked out with the drop bars, haha.
Just a 15 min ride round the valley I live in. You have motivated me though, I will try to ride it and make a vid b4 xmas :)
Do you think that MT-200 calipers could be activated by sti GRX ( or tiagra or 105 ) levers? Thks
Should be, shimano brakes are much more cross compatible than their gears though!
@@W1DO Hoses diameter is apparently not the same between road & mtb
but more importantly; does the master send the same amount of fluid for a similar lever stroke ?
@@cabaneencac5168 if the road stuff is compatable with GRX then it should be compatable with xt and mt200 (based on grx working with XT and mt200 working with XT).
If I had the parts and a spare couple of hours I could tell you for sure :)
I have mt200 system in my mtb and i want change my lever and handlebar to gravel bike, which version of road bike lever are compatible?
I have 2 9 transmission
I *think* most of the gravel or road bike levers should work (105 or grx). I have not had a good look at the mt200 callipers though. If mt200 is compatible with xt levers then its compatible with 105 and grx.
You will need to use a GRX rear mech though! The MTB gear lever pulls a diffrent amount of cable to road gear lever. The cassette spacing is the same (so you can use a mtb cassette or road one ....as long as the rear mech matches the lever).
There are other (cheaper) ways to change cable pull in the levers, but it might be too long a comment if I get in to that :)
Hi I have a quick question: I have a flat mount disk brake frame with a flat bar. Would it be possible to use a GRX caliper with a XT type brake lever? According to shimano, they are not compatible though.
it should work as long as you get the right hose fittings. If it's the same generation of stuff I used (and shimano still have the same products for sale) then you might have enough connectors if you buy the calliper and lever separately (the way I did it the connectors came with the parts of the system I didnt buy)
What is the serial number for the GRX tubing screw?
Sorry, I can't remember - been ages since i did it. I think I got it in my local bike store by asking?
what specs on the rims and tires?
Info in this vid ruclips.net/video/QP6LOmtm_p0/видео.html gravel kings on mtb rims :)
What are the measurements on the bolt that goes in the brake hose on the lever side ? I have been trying to find them and can’t seem to find what the measurements are nor the number or specs .. thanks
Not sure which bolt you mean? The long one that attaches the hose to the calliper is a weird bolt and at the lever end of the hose there is a "barb" that gets inserted in to the hose an olive and a nut type thing over the hose. Searching for "shimano barb" on ebay or trade me should make it easy to find a local supplier that will have the part you need. One of my other vids has a close up of some parts & numbers for the honzo build.
@@W1DO yes exactly that one .. so hard to find the description of that bolt .... thanks
bro, levers grx rear with derraileur xt
??
It's do-able you'll need to buy an pulley adapter since they have different cable pull... J-Tek shiftmate or wolftooth tanpan
I fixed mine with tanpan, work flawlessly...
