I live very close to Morris Island, the same island where Fort Wagner once stood. Some years after the Civil War ended, the ocean reclaimed Fort Wagner. All that is left there today is white sandy beach, azure ocean blue, and the whispers of our past. Today, I see boaters, tourists, black and white, who have not a clue of the sacrifice made on this blood-stained piece of Earth. All around us, the voices of history softly murmur the truth. If only we’d take the time to listen. Give ‘em hell 54th!
And to the defenders from the 20th South Carolina Volunteer Infantry Regiment, who were stationed at Fort Wagner and engaged in this battle to save their homeland from aggression.
@@KrisWustrow during a war, it's only pain and suffering. Blacks, whites paid a heavy price. 150 years after the beginning of the Civil War - millions and millions of people kept suffering from wars during the 20th century, and still now - we all should think about it. @@xaviercoppee3650 That's all true. But there is nothing "peaceful" about Leftists removing statues honoring a nation's heroes in order to achieve some sort of retribution.
When I was a child I was crushed that they lost the battle at Fort Wagner, but now as a man I see they won the war in showing the entire world they were not slaves and died as free men who set other men and women free.

Glad to see there are lots of other die-hard "Glory" and James Horner fans. In all the years since '89, new friends or first dates would ask...."What's your favorite movie?" When I'd tell them it was "Glory", they'd look confused. " I don't remember that movie" most would say. Occasionally, a guy would respond...."You mean that movie back in the '80's about the black Civil War regiment?" Yep, I'd say amused by their obvious confusion because I knew they always expected a white female to hold "Titanic" or some such big film with a lot of romance in it as their favorite movie. I was always so disappointed that most people didn't even remember Glory if they ever even saw the film which came and went so quietly without the fanfare it deserved. It was an incredible script with astonishing acting especially on the part of Denzel Washington who gave us, in my opinion, the most beautiful and powerful acting performance EVER and told us about a piece of history that desperately needed to be told. Men fight for lot's of reasons. God and country, kings, land, fire by the hearth and mom's apple pie. These men fought for the noblest cause of all. They did not fight only for freedom, but for the right to stand up, to hold their head up, to be counted, to not bow down to another man. They fought to give the constitution meaning. They fought for the right to be a man. They fought for everybody.
James Horner, the undisputed master of the movie soundtrack genre. R.I.P. Mr. Horner. You have yet to compose your masterpiece - Heaven's soundtrack, which may well sound something like this. Thank you for that wonderful music, sir.
If I were to hazard a guess, it is very likely I have listened to this masterpiece well over 100 times since discovering it when it came out in 1989. Glory is one of the founding scores for my passion and appreciation of the musical score and this end credit piece among the very best ever written.
On this films release, a friend, his son and I went to our local cinema to see it. It was far from crowded. A sign of the times probably. CGI was beginning to encroach and audiences wanted to be 'Terminated' into suspending disbelief, which was a great shame, as this film was an accomplishment. And the score no less so. We three sat until the last credit had rolled and the last note had died away. The need to hear this theme to it's end was paramount to me. as I was completely hooked and went out the next day to order it. On vinyl. To the shop's assistant's amazement, as CD's were the in thing.
I totally agree wat music it was back then and even today wud lift the spirit of any human being no wars are just it’s just old men talking and young men dying but to all the brave men who died in those wars day will never be forgotten god rest there souls

Your music is memorable! Films we grew up with watching composed by you filled us with nostalgia! Old school music! Breathtaking, powerful, inspirational, beautiful, haunting, epic, dramatic, suspenseful, everything else. We will never forget your films and the music that made your films watchable. Your music is captivating! We enjoy all music from you! We cannot believe it's over! We cannot believe you have gone so soon! We cannot believe things will change! Your music was old school, big time! No additional scores will be written! You were a boon to film music! You will be missed even as we speak! You may have died, but your music still lives on. We will continue to listen in memory of you. You have become a legend Mr. Horner! Everyone, even Kate Winslet says "I'll never let go!". No sir, we will never let go of your music! You were and always will be the man! James Horner, Prince of all film composers, may you rest in peace! Always continue to hear our prayers as we will always continue to hear your music! God rest your soul! ;....(
Even Abraham Lincoln himself credited soldiers like the brave and honorable 54th for turning the tide. It saddens me that most Americans today have forgotten about them. Sound the bugle from Heaven men!!! (FYI, it was Shaw's idea to tear up the paychecks)
For all the men and women who ever fought to build a better world for us all to live in. Especially those who knew they would never see it themselves....
The music and scene where Gould Shaw is on his horse on the SC beach looking out, once, last time knowing it is his last time, since he was leading basically a cannon fodder suicide charge, was awesome. He saw a lot of war at Sharpsburg (Antitem). However; Fort Wagner did not fall until to end of the War. Brave men against the odds until the end on both sides. Men fighting for what they believed in, men of courage and valor, who did a duty, when called. But we should never glory in or romanticize war. The song "Year of Jubilee"on this soundtrack is my fav!.

There are movies that manage to change your life, inspire you, that give you hope, that make you dream and want to be a better person. All of us in the depths of our being know when we are in front of a good movie. I saw it as a teenager on VHS and was moved by it. Good cinema is capable of achieving that.
To the cowards who defaced the 54th monument who clearly have no idea about history, they can burn in Hell. The 54th will never be forgotten. A little “fun fact”. The Union Army asked the parents of Robert Shaw if they wanted the body exhumed from the mass grave so he can have a proper burial and they said “no, he would want to be buried with his men. He shall stay”.

His sword was returned to his family after the Civil War by a Confederate officer that took it from his body.his body was treated with grate disrespect after his death. The sword was lost in the family then found and is on display in Boston. He was Buried in a mass grave with his men and is still with them.

This tablet is in memory of colonel 54th Massachusetts Regiment, fell at Fort Wagner, South Carolina and was there buried, July 18th 1863, aged 25 years 9 months, "Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends".
I saw this movie today and really, this is one of the best movies I've ever seen. And it is still directed by Edward Zwick, the same director of The Last Samurai and Blood Diamond.
I remember watching this during my High school years and I never cry instead I was amazed by the music and I always wanted to hear it again because it's feel like a military Man came home where his wife and his children waiting for him or his children waiting for him, neither way the music does made me feel like I'm waiting for someone I haven't seen or heard from a long time.
I remember the first time I heard the first two minutes of The Closing Credit Theme was 30 years ago. It was used for a PBS commercial PSA about teachers. I was only 7 years old at the time, but for some reason I just remember the music stayed with me in words I can't explain. I would eventually see the ad several more times after that, and everytime the music always moved me. Then around 1999, one of the local TV stations here in the Bay Area was showing GLORY. I actually was flipping in between channels, so I missed most of the movie and didn't even know the title. But I remember flipping back to the station and watching the last few minutes with the Fort Wagner charge and the ending emotional scenes. Then when the closing credits started with the images of the Robert Gould Shaw Memorial, I was shocked when I heard the opening theme! It was the same one from the PBS teachers ad! And I made the connection that the movie GLORY is where the music originated from. Fast-forward a few more years later during my high school sophomore year and my U.S. History teacher showing the class GLORY. And man, was I emotional during the whole time. I did remember that this was the exact movie in '99 when I was channel surfing, but I finally saw the whole movie and was very moved by it. And when the iconic Closing Credits roll with the images and the opening theme, I just remember being silent for a while. I guess you could say that GLORY became one of my favorite movies that day! Thank you Colonel Robert Gould Shaw and the 54th Massachusetts for your bravery and glorious sacrifice. As an immigrant to this country, I wouldn't be here today if it weren't for all of you. So again... Thank you. 🌹❤️ And thank you, James Horner for an incredible soundtrack! Everytime I listen to the GLORY soundtrack, especially the opening two minutes of The Closing Credits it just always brings me back to 30 years ago when I first heard it in that PBS ad about teachers and just being moved by it. And I have you to thank for it. May you forever Rest In Peace. You are sorely missed...😔🌹❤️

Yes! Also when Tripp yells "Come on!" After Col. Shaw falls gives me chills. Epic movie moment right there.
And won.
Rest in peace. I love you James Horner.
James Horner, the undisputed master of the movie soundtrack genre. R.I.P. Mr. Horner. You have yet to compose your masterpiece - Heaven's soundtrack, which may well sound something like this. Thank you for that wonderful music, sir.
Heaven's soundtrack?
If I were to hazard a guess, it is very likely I have listened to this masterpiece well over 100 times since discovering it when it came out in 1989. Glory is one of the founding scores for my passion and appreciation of the musical score and this end credit piece among the very best ever written.
This is so amazing, I get chills listening to this especially at 0:48 big time chills! Very spiritual listen to!
@@philmcnamara299 Amen to that!
I got it on vinyl, too
Who was here from Backdraft Trailer and Be a Teacher, Be a hero. Ad council Recruiting New Teachers, Inc. TV advertisement?????
Soooo many great actors in this film
This song better be played in my funeral. 😢😢😢
This score sounds so beautiful and emotional and that feeling of patriotism! Love it! 👏
James, you had a unique gift! You had knowledge! You had the profession! You shared it with the world! You shared it with the film music industry! You became an icon for inspirational blockbusters!
(FYI, it was Shaw's idea to tear up the paychecks)
i never knew his name but i knew his music. you will be missed, my friend.
This is my favorite album. I've lived a musical life, musicians and music in all its forms, surrounding me since I was 3, i've been the manager of a record store for 12 years, and this is my desert island #1. Sorry, Reuben & the Jets. God bless you, James Horner. God bless the 54th. Here's to Glory. ❤🤍💙
Some movies i just cant watch again. Too sad. And to think, this ACTUALLY happpened. This is our history SMH. RIP 54th. Thank u to all the whites and blacks who died for equality and love
The African Americans should always walk with there heads up high.
@@peterbates6979 Well said, Peter. They have as great a selection of forebears as we do-the 54th, the Zulus, the King's African Rifles, the Xhosa, the Matabele and many other peoples whose tribal names live on for their history in battling for their freedom, howsoever the result. I pray that our coloured brothers and sisters find their proper way and join us on the road to a better tomorrow.
@@RobertLocksley385 Excuse me? Who is "us" that apparently coloreds have not yet joined?
He will truly be missed. R.I.P.
Wonderful music, wonderful movie about real American heroes.
Gives me chills and goose bumps every time i listen to it :) I watched this film none stop as a kid growing up :) Absolute classic film and soundtrack :)
The closing credits track gives me goosebumps. Awesome
There are movies that manage to change your life, inspire you, that give you hope, that make you dream and want to be a better person. All of us in the depths of our being know when we are in front of a good movie.
I saw it as a teenager on VHS and was moved by it. Good cinema is capable of achieving that.
Glad to see others who feel this way.
Magnificent.
pure emotional epicness, makes my spine tingle.
A strong composition by Horner.
This is truly a great soundtrack 👌👏
AVATAR 😭 this guy’s a genius ! I love how composers incorporate their signatures ! God i love music
Great music 👍but a sad 😞 show
RIP James. A talent that will be missed.
A magnificent and haunting film.
Soundtrack for soul Mr. Horner. Thank You!
One of my favorite movies of all time. Love this!
Such A GREAT MOVIE**** Everything So Well Put Together Along HISTORICAL LINES*** The Production*** The Sets and Of Course The Actors and Music..Bravo!! To James Horner and The Harlem Boys Choir…It Hits Too the HEART n SOUL..
One of the greats I loved it
I have LOVED this score for what feels like my whole life even though it came out when I was around 15. It was my first real foray into movie scores and still remains my favorite. Amazingly moving and inspirational, just like the movie itself and the story it told.
So glad to know there are other fans of it
Was trying to find all my soundtrack scores from way back. This was one that was necessary. Missed listening to all these scores.
That movie was inspiring. All of us will fight eternal fight just as those brave souls. All of us will suffer. Eternal struggle for eternal peace.
I am in love with Colonel Robert Gould Shaw! I love the way he shone in his very handsome "Blue Suit"!!! I wish I could go back in Time, and meet him! I would love on him, and ultimately, save him from dying at The Second Battle of Fort Wagner! I just love him so much!
Beautiful music !!.. the pain, the sacrifice, the righteousness.... the Glory
they all should gotten awards for this movie
Toujours des frissons ce thème.
One of the most tear worthy and emotional scores that James Horner has composed along with films like Braveheart.
They have recovered his saber, and it's being cared for.
Col Shaw my compliments sir.
Where is his saber being held? Growing up I watched this movie at least 100 times. It inspired me. Col. Shaw and the 54th regiment were heroes.
I remember my mom telling me this and my eyes lit up and I jumped up with joy
His sword was returned to his family after the Civil War by a Confederate officer that took it from his body.his body was treated with grate disrespect after his death. The sword was lost in the family then found and is on display in Boston. He was Buried in a mass grave with his men and is still with them.
Greatest movie and theme ever so emotional
One of my favorite movies of all time cuz of how amazing story, acting, and music was. And because it has some amazing and courageous history in it. Also, I'm a huge James Horner fan and Glory was the first soundtrack I owned. How I miss you,Mr. Horner. This soundtrack and Apollo 13 are my top favs composed by him and his music always lifts me up. "Glory, Hallelujah!"
This tablet is in memory of colonel 54th Massachusetts Regiment, fell at Fort Wagner, South Carolina and was there buried, July 18th 1863, aged 25 years 9 months, "Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends".
Great movie and sound track.
SAW THIS MOVIE AND LOVED THE MUSIC AND STORY
We all cried
3 phenomenal actors.
I look forward to hearing the bells in all of James Horner's compositions...
James Horner at his best.
I saw this movie today and really, this is one of the best movies I've ever seen. And it is still directed by Edward Zwick, the same director of The Last Samurai and Blood Diamond.
Backdraft (1991) trailer brought me here.
Backdraft is by director Ron Howard and interestingly, James Horner scored 7 Howard films
Haha, that’s how I first discovered this song too! I love that movie!
You’re here either because of this movie or the Backdraft trailer.
Both. It’s connected to two movies I love!
I'm from the South and I say. GLORY to the 54th Massachusetts, FREE MEN OF THE REPUBLIC!
Such an extraordinary score and film. God bless it.
So again... Thank you. 🌹❤️
And thank you, James Horner for an incredible soundtrack!
Actually, it's Ad Council, not PBS.
honestly, this should be played at a Harris/Walz campaign. This music reflects the fight & struggle for freedom and human rights
Places I used to live and work were depicted in the movie. That, plus the music, bring me back to this movie a lot.
Backdraft main trailer music! I’ve been looking for this for years!
