- With Remembrance Sunday just around the corner, here's my review of the Hornby R2308M Excalibur Express train pack with the lovely Tangmere Battle of Britain locomotive!
Thanks for watching!

The Loco is "Battle of Britain Class" and the badge under the name plate is meant to be the RAF crest. Tangmere was an important RAF station during the battle of Britain. I love your enthusiasm!
It is indeed Richard - and thanks for the info on the crest and Tangmere!
All the best,
Sam :)
Love this review Sam!
My grandad loved bullied Pacific's, it's great to carry on his spirit of the railway on remembrance Sunday! ( Tear rolls down cheek) 😥🚂🚉
Thanks so much for that mate - it's lovely to hear that these remind you of him, have a good day on Saturday,
All the best,
Sam :)
This is definitely my favorite train pack now!
Ooh that's good to hear! :D
Cheers,
Sam :)
great vid sam that train pack is wonderful the coaches are beautiful i really like the curtains inside the coach great attention to detail
Thanks mate, me too, I thought the curtains were great! :D
Thanks for watching, Sam :)
Pronounced "Tang-mere" not "Tange-mere" sorry buddy haha, great review as always! what a lovely set!
haha that's okay - sorry I got that wrong, I'll try to remember that in the future!
Cheers,
Sam :)
After watching this video I have just picked a set up for a bargain price! The engine is stunning but I also think these are some of the best coaches Hornby have ever produced! Keep up the good work 👏 Should go well alongside my Winston Churchill funeral set.
I like the way the loco has 6 lamps. Also the rebuilt tender. And the glazed windows as well.
Thank you! Yeah the detail on this one was really pretty good! :D
Thanks for watching,
Sam :)
Yeah mate I can understand why she's one of your favourites!! Even though she's over 10 years old the running and detail seems amazing! The coaches seem great too! - all the best mate :)
Thanks very much mate - I know, just amazing for it's age!!
Glad you liked it mate,
Sam :)
And again a really wonderful train pack. I received today via Royal Airmail the very nice train pack reviewed by you on 3rd of May, 2017... the Hornby R2173 BR 14xx autocoach train pack. You inspired me. I'm so happy now.
Thanks very much Norbert - ooh that's fantastic, really glad you're happy with that mate! :D
All the best,
Sam :)
I LOVE it. A lovely steam engine and the cars to go with it. All in a pack, that you found for a low price... I'ma have to see if I can find one of these...
Thanks so much - yes I was super happy with this, it was a real bargain! :D
Thanks for watching,
Sam :)
Hi Sam I have a Hornby rebuilt Battle of Britain class ,it is 34053 Sir Keith park. In fact the real Sir Keith park is preserved ,it used to be at the Severn valley railway from May 2012 when it steamed for the first time since October 1965. By 2nd January 2018 it was its final day running on the Severn valley railway before its return to the swanage railway for the remaining five years of its 10 year boiler ticket.
Hi Adam, that's great to hear - I'd love to see the real Keith Park one day (the loco, not the bloke, lol!)
All the best,
Sam :)
Traditionally the "Excalibur express" would primarily consist of the coaches included in the pack you have along with 3 other Pullman coaches and 4 standard class chocolate and cream coaches , forming a ten coach express rake and would usually have a backup locomotive such as a class 47 or a Thunderbird (class 57) to aid the train along its journey.
Nowadays the train runs from London-Brighton and on some occasions would go from paington to Brighton via bristol temple meads but that movement has sadley been with drawn due to tangmere having an incident with a SPAD just outside of dawlish
Hi Brian, thanks so much for the info on that - I'll have to try and re-create the 10 coach version at some point then!!
Awhh that is a shame to hear though :/
Thanks for watching,
Sam :)
So was it a relatively recent train service? I can't find hardly any info on it at all. And doesn't the Tangmere live up north now?
I've always loved a Bulleid pacific, not my fav loco but I do really like them.
That's good to hear, really glad you like them - I think they are my very favourites! ;3
Thanks for watching,
Sam :)
great video. i love the bulleid Pacifics and this train set is just great. great video.
Thanks a lot mate - really glad you liked her!
Cheers,
Sam :)
I have “Spitfire” West Country class! It is one of my best engines!
Edit: I saw bullman on the end on the merchant navy class!
Ahh that's good to hear mate - they really are superb! And well spotted with Bullman! ;D
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
Just caught this by accident having just bought the same also on eBay for £130 today, 14.8.24. Delighted to hear all the compliments. As previous;y mentioned Tangmere is pronounced as in "Bang" and not Tanj.
Great video mate really enjoyed it and the music at the begging was amazing just like the locomotive that you reviewed as usual I have left a like as well because this video defiantly deserves it.
Thanks so much for the support mate - that's very good of you!
Cheers,
Sam :0
Sam'sTrains your very welcome mate
I think the logo bellow the nameplate is the royal air force logo/crest.
Also great video Sam really enjoy the battle of Britain/West Country classes being shown
Hi Ben, yeah I think you're right about that - someone else has said the same!
Thanks for watching,
Sam :)
That engine is so realistic and fully detail
Thank you - yes it's definitely a lovely engine!
Thanks for watching,
Sam :)
Sam'sTrains your welcome
That was great Sam, beautiful set to say the least.
Thanks a lot Jose - really glad you enjoyed seeing it! :D
Cheers,
Sam :)
Sam this is a lovely video for a lovely loco i love the light Pacifics.
Thanks so much - really glad you like them, I do too! :D
Cheers,
Sam :)
I love the look of the train
Me too - such a lovely one this! :D
Thanks for watching,
Sam :)
yeah battle of Britain's do look kinda good
Omg Sam you replied
Stunning loco. I always purchase Hornby products, new or second hand, with trepidation. They're visually lovely, but mechanically as delicate as a butterfly's wing. In fact I only buy used Hornby stuff of that era at a price that takes into account return to Hornby for repairs.
Those coaches look old compared to the BoB locomotive, which is often the case with their sets. An exception is the Schools "Southern Suburban" pack, which contains their lovely Maunsell coaches. This sometimes sells for less than £100, which considering the coaches individually sell for £35 to £45 is a bargain. My loco inevitably had to be returned to Hornby for work!
Thanks a lot for the comment - me too normally - but being that I repair these for a living, I know there's normally nothing I can't fix, for a good price - and Ebay especially are very good for opening cases and giving refunds if things aren't exactly as described!
Agreed - they must be old because they didn't have the NEM pockets, whereas the loco did!
Thanks for the comment,
Sam :)
I love Tangmere. Would love one of my own. With the King Arthur aspects to the train pack, it would be fun if they showcased her at King Arthur's Labyrinth
Thanks Heath - me too, really love that one! Keep an eye on Ebay, more might get posted! :D
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
Well done, repairing that. Rails of Sheffield sent me a loco that they had not test run (all the way to Canada!) - it did not run! On top of that, the way they packed it broke the flimsy plastic connector between loco and tender! I was not pleased. As they could not guarantee being able to repair the loco, they gave me a credit to the next purchase. I wish I could fix the loco, but I am not that talented in repairs. I am a musician, not a technician.
Hi Paul, thanks a lot - really sorry to hear you've had issues like that - I admit I had to do repairs on the locos I purchased second hand from them, so I tend to avoid them for second hand these days - since they don't really seem to test them!
Thanks for watching,
Sam :)
Beautiful looking set Sam, love the Battle of Britain locomotive, I have the Winston Churchill set. Well done for fixing the gears, sounds like a pain...Simon
Thanks very much Simon - ooh that Churchill set looks fantastic to me! I was really relieved to see her running properly for the first time!
Thanks for watching,
Sam :)
The stream lining is beautiful
Thank you! Yeah it's definitely a very unique feature on them! :D
Thanks for watching,
Sam :)
Love that loco! Took me at lest 10 years to get hold of one mined in amazing good unboxing stay safe 😀
Thanks so much! Yes it took me a while to find mine too - you too mate! :D
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
I’m pumped for Friday also such a lovely locomotive and rollingstock it wasn’t a very nice thing about it not running at first but in the end it was a lovely runner
Thank you!! I'm looking forward to it as well!
Glad you enjoyed this one,
Sam :)
these are amazing for their age, they actually made 1 extra for testing!
Amazing engine and cars the people in the U.K. Really have style when it come to trains great review
Thanks so much - haha yeah I've always thought so too!
Thanks again,
Sam :)
Wow stunning coaches glad you sorted loco out it just like new not so sure on Hornbys box design guess they were ok at the time but would like to see more art work put in them like some of the Bachmann train packs.
Thanks a lot Michael - I'm very glad about that too! Yeah that's true - they were all identical, which is a bit of a shame!
Thanks for watching,
Sam :)
The badge under the name is the RAF Badge for the Tangmere base that you will see on the Tangmere flag on base and entrance sign and and letter headers as well as on all personal uniforms.
Duly noted Simon, thanks very much for the info! :D
Thanks for watching, Sam :)
wow iv never seen this pack before and indeed the rod snapping Tangmere
Thanks mate! Ahh yes - luckily the rods on mine haven't snapped yet ;D
Thanks for watching,
Sam :)
Very nice set, and well done
Thanks David! :D
Some of my favourite Hornby locomotives - interesting to see / hear the old-issue locomotive alongside the super-smooth more-modern locomotives.
Strange as it sounds, but those coaches are pretty special, got to admit.
I still like to add a little weight to the locomotives - modern type - and correspondingly the tender. Doesn't seem to be detrimental with that 5-pole skew-wound motor, but the streamlined body can permit quite a bit of lead to be added if so wished - I add perhaps 40g. Al.
Cheers Alan - yes it was a bit of a nightmare, but all okay now!! :D
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
Another early-bird! Those coaches look awesome.
Yeah you are! Thanks mate - glad you liked them!
Cheers,
Sam :)
My version of the same loco is a bit older, no NEM socket, and no "shield" on the cab. It is also loco driven, but it's a bad puller, 5-6 light coaches on flat layout, and maximum 3 up hills. I do believe the reason of the power issue is that the rear driving wheel has a spring that pushes it down, but its not a very strong spring, and the loco wobbles on the 2nd driving wheel, and looses traction. I plan to get the newest one for Xmas, or for my birthday, to see how its evolved (and to get a more useful one).
Ahh okay mate - oh well, I bet it still looks beautiful! Don't waste your time though - they haven't evolved at all, it's exactly the same model as it was 13 years ago - I have a rather unhappy video of it coming soon ;D
Thanks for watching,
Sam :)
looking forward to it.
Although it's the same tooling, my one from the recent batch of 'Exeter's' can manage 12 mixed Hornby and Triang MK1's and Maunsells on the flat, and between 6 and 8 on a 1 in 70 (estimated) gradient. With an M7 as a banker it can manage 10, with an S15 banking 12 on the hill, 15 on the flat.
My 34090 from the 2009 batch can only mange 6 on the level and 4 up the same gradient.
oh god the words 'split gear' sends shivers down my spine :0
haha and me! I'm a bit braver with them now though after this ;D
Thanks for watching,
Sam :)
The crest is the RAF badge as it is named after RAF Tangmere the Battle of Britain airfield
I love that type of Locos my Friend Great Video Sam and i just Subscribed to you. (Good Luck and i wish you the best my Friend.)
Thanks a lot - that's really kind of you, hope you like the channel!
Thanks for watching,
Sam :)
NP Sam it's all about the fans my friend and maybe one day we could do a live stream together if your ok with it??
Those coaches are a real point of interest for me...mark 2s didn't show up until well into the diesel days...I shall have to do some reading ;)
Yes that's true! The Excalibur express was a contemporary train, which was designed for tourism/enthusiasts I believe!
Thanks for watching,
Sam :)
Striking locomotive, sam, now i'm thinking of getting the Winston Churchill funeral train pack with the west country class for christmas. :-)
Thanks Jack - good luck with those then if you decide to go ahead with them! :D
Thanks for watching,
Sam :)
Beautiful set
Thanks Pedro! :D
beautiful Sam amazing as always
Thanks a lot - very much appreciated mate! :D
Cheers,
Sam :0
what an awesome train pack sam
Thank you! Glad you enjoyed seeing it mate! :D
Cheers,
Sam :)
The Crest underneath the number was the crest of RAF Tangmere fighter station and the crest underneath the nameplate was the RAF Albatross (little known fact). But man Wartime history and trains. Match made in heaven.
Ahh duly noted, thanks very much for pointing this out, duly noted!
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
hi Sam!! what a fantastic train pack i love bulleid pacifics my fav are battle of Britain classes un rebuilt especially 34070 "Manston" thanks for a great video - Adam :)
Hi Adam, no problem mate - really glad you enjoyed it!
All the best,
Sam :)
Great Video! Thought the rating was spot on. Love the Tangmere.
Thanks a lot mate, much appreciated!
Cheers,
Sam :)
I really love the coaches, pity you had a problem with the loco. It is 'Tang mere' after the Battle of Britain airfield, Sam. It is a nice loco for the year.
Thanks a lot Nigel - yeah it was a shame, but that's another thing I know I can do now, at a push, hehe!
Thanks for watching,
Sam :)
The crest is due to it being a "Battle of Britain" loco. Tangmere is a village in West Sussex and there was an RAF airfield there during World War Two. Hurricanes and Spitfires flew from there and hence the loco being named after it :)
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/RAF_Tangmere
Duly noted, many thanks for the info on this! :D
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
What a cracking model Tangmere is! Would love to see her in real life. Have only seen 34007 in real life (apart from 34046 but she is rebuilt)
Thanks Mark! I'd love to as well - I bet she's marvellous! :D
Thanks for watching,
Sam :)
Sam'sTrains She is marvellous mate! She is on your wall of fame
Ah, so you missed the Canpac and Bodmin era at the MHR... that makes me feel old! At least Swanage should be emerging at Ropley soon...
Ah, no not exactly. I don't remember seing Bodmin, but haven't scanned through old photos, I found out that I have seen CanPac before and that was in the 2000's when I was very young ;D Swanage should be emerging in 2018/19 I reckon same time or after CanPac. CP looks to be further ahead but funds still permit.
Interesting - I haven't seen Canpac since she left the MHR for Eastleigh, so interesting to hear she's further ahead than 34105. I was last up at the MHR for the July gala, and 34105 looked pretty far advanced, other than the boiler. The formers for the air-smoothed casing were in place, and other bits were complete and awaiting fitting.
That really is a lovely looking set...Absolutely beautiful! :))
Thanks very much Tom - really glad you like it!
All the best,
Sam :)
Hi Sam,
The Tangmere locomotive is named after a village near the south coast, in West Sussex. During the Second World War the village had an RAF base there. During the Battle of Britain the two types of British fighter planes used were the Spitfire and the Hurricane. I think I’m right in saying RAF Tangmere had a squadron of Hurricanes flying from there. The crest on the side of the engine is an RAF crest.
By the way, you were pronouncing the Tang in Tangmere like Tangerine. It is actually pronounced like the Tang in Tango. Just thought you’d like to know.
It does look like a nice model though.
Thanks a lot for that Jim - yes I'm sorry about the pronunciation, haha!
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
Best train pack and video ever Sam
Thanks a lot mate - that's very kind of you!
Cheers,
Sam :)
Those lovely coaches give Pullman coaches a run for their money! Would love this set. Fancy selling yours??!! Lol.
I agree Pete, they are so lovely! haha I'll let you know if I do! xD
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
Hi Sam. This is one of my most favourite designs of locomotives. I want to call them Merchant Navy class, but of course your is the West Country / Battle of Britain variety (or is it just the fairings on the front of the locos that make them seem to be based on the same design?). I love both the dark green BR livery and the lighter green Southern railway livery. The coaches are, of course, so very beautiful - especially the chocolate and cream livery.
Me too Paul - they're wonderful aren't they?! They do look especially lovely in this livery too! :D
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
what a lovely loco mate love t they are so lovely
Thanks so much - really glad you thought so too! :D
Cheers,
Sam :)
yes haha i love it
I love seeing a Bulleid Pacific, Rebuilt or Spamcan.
Me too! They're just superb aren't they? :D
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
Hello Sam! I've found out that there will be LEGO city trains at the model railway exhibition I'm going too! A bit of nostalgia ;)
Also my local model railway shop has a £1.00 bargain box with some coaches in it (BR Blood and Custard, short length) and the previous owner seems to have modified them for close coupling! They seem to be in good condition with the wheels and such, they are slightly dusted up so they would look great in an old siding, or maybe even repainted and interiors inside of them!
Cheers!
Ed
Ooh sounds good mate - hope you have a great time!
That seems like a good bargain to me - were you tempted to grab them then?? :3
Thanks for watching,
Sam :)
They sound like the old 1950's Triang ones. I remember seeing a beautiful finescale model of Corfe Castle station, complete in every way and with appropiate Southern region stock. Amazing in itself, but even more so because everything, and I mean EVERYTHING, was made out of lego!
Nice one. I heard in Thomas and Friends season 22, a new character is based of that engine in this video.
Thank you! Yeah absolutely - it should be very interesting to say the least ;D
Thanks for watching,
Sam :)
I'm surprised it did have NEM, bought an R2283 recently which is similar release date I believe, only have the older couplings sadly
When i showed my nan a photo of a west country class she absolutely adored it because it looks so different, she couldn't remember see ing them when she was young even though she lived near the S.R, i think she wants me to get one but in br livery because she loves br green. I might get this pack if i can scrape up enough money (even though my layout is based around the L.N.E.R but I'll make an exception) just dont tell her hat its a battle of Britain class and i dont think she will notice
That's awesome - really glad she liked them! Maybe that's a good excuse to buy one?! :D
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
I'm planning on getting the hornby bluebell railway Stepney pack, used but in good condition it comes with everything even the certificate of approval, tomorrow I might since I'm getting my braces 😬
Ooh wow that's awesome, enjoy it! Good luck with your braces! :3
Thanks for watching,
Sam :)
Sam'sTrains I wish you could review it, I'm planning on reviewing it
Sadly I couldn't get a hold of it :(
But I did get two terriers
Great video! I like the look of those train packs but I've never bought one. :)
Thanks very much mate!! Well if you fancy one they do turn up from time to time! :D
Thanks for watching,
Sam :)
I love the bullied Pacifics that’s my 2nd favorite class of locomotive
Ooh great choice Javion! :D
Sam'sTrains what’s your favorite class of locomotive
Mukka, the green plate below the 'Tangmere' name should depict the RAF Tangmere base coat of arms. Stay safe. Gaz
Ahh duly noted Gaz, thanks for the info!
Thanks for watching, Sam :)
The crest on the boiler, looks like the RAF, while the one on the cab looks like the 92nd Squadron.
Duly noted David, I bet you're right!
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
Just looked up what the A stands for in the 5FA classification. Turns out it has the strength of a 5F but the 'A' means that it must take lighter freight trains if the train is full of unfitted wagons (wagons with only hand brakes). This is because the brakes on the Light Pacific aren't too strong and the locomotive is, well, light. This means it can't stop a heavy freight train perfectly without fitted wagons.
Yeah absolutely - I think that was the way I understood it too!
Thanks for the comment,
Sam :)
A genuinely interesting comment.... I had wondered. I knew the 5F bit (fufiling the original claim that they were mixed traffic... yeah... hmm...) but the A bit is interesting.
The Bullied Pacific’s are some of my favourite locos still can’t decide if I prefer rebuilt or unrebuilt
That's fantastic to hear! haha yeah it's a very tricky decision! :3
Thanks for watching,
Sam :)
Rebuilds edge it slightly for me: better performers, and personal connections.
i think that in 03' is when hornby started using plastic gears for the motor and wheels so that's why the grease was no good, older models had brass or metal gears so no ceasing up just wearing out still at least yours wasn't brunt out or not working at all
Hi mate, yeah that sounds about right - possibly earlier - I know their original Merchant Navy came in 2001, and that had the plastic gears too!
It's a shame things have to be downgraded while the prices rise, but I suppose that's the way it goes!
Thanks for watching,
Sam :)
This is wonderful, Sam. Did you know, here in America, Remembrance Sunday is actually called Veteran's Day (or Armistice Day, as it was originally called in 1918)?
Thanks a lot! Yes I had heard that - and hopefully you'll have a nice day Saturday!
Cheers,
Sam :)
I think I've seen two of these coaches and bo'ness preserved railway line, I think they were brake coaches with two class 68s and they were going to pull an express can't remember which
Oh okay, that's very cool - I suppose they must be out there somewhere - I've never seen them myself though!
Thanks for the comment,
Sam :)
The Battle of Britain class looks very nice well done on your video :-)
Thanks very much mate, really glad you enjoyed it! :D
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
i love this pack
Me too - it's so lovely! :D
Cheers,
Sam :)
:3
Also Sam I hate to break it to you but what with the big brass screws in the bottom and the large ridges to the windows and the I'd say those coaches are using a modified cast of the old BR MK 2's. Minus the ridging to aid the painting of the BR blue and grey they are identical...
HI Jake - yeah of course, I wasn't suggesting they'd tooled these coaches just for the set - what I meant was their nameplates and livery were exclusive to the set, rather than just standard issue coaches!
Thanks for watching,
Sam :)
Great Video Sam I agree on the issue I've had a few locos do the same Abdul bad Hornby quality many thanks
Harry
Thanks Harry! Yeah it is a pain that - but I'm really glad I was able to sort it!
Thanks for watching,
Sam :)
Excellent video again nice loco except it's in BR livery. The crest on the side is a RAF badge probably the one for RAF Tangmere airfield. I saw a film on Amazon prime 100 years of trains. That said these were made as lightweight a design as possible probably another factor in the wheel design and also uses less metal which was in short supply during and after WW2.
Hi mate, thanks a lot for letting me have the info on that - much appreciated!
Glad you liked the video,
Sam :)
looks like one my brother wants as hes after the whinston churchill funral train pack and the pulman with the mallard in it lol
Yeah absolutely - that pack had one of these too! :D
Thanks for watching,
Sam :)
lol my brother is mad with stuff like this as nrm shildon got new hornby stuff in lol as the packs he is after is the railway childrens one the pulman with mallard and the whinston churchill funaral one lol and that ambulance one as he wants that to teaz a friend of his lol
idk what it is about the west country/battle of Britain streamline class but I find them so beautiful and I'm really picky when it comes to streamlined locomotives.I'm sorry you had to fix her before getting her to run again but at lest you where and 100 pounds is a really great deal for a set like that.you really lucked out
Thanks for the comment - yeah I feel exactly the same way too - absolutely fantastic!
Thanks for watching,
Sam :)
I like that box to it looks nice
Thank you! Yeah it is a very cool design :3
Thanks for watching,
Sam :)
I always buy new wheel sets when the gearing goes as it easier to change wheel set that change the drive gear
Yeah that's true actually - luckily I did mange to replace the gear on it's own! :D
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
The Badge below the Tangmere nameplate is the RAF eagle because Tangmere was a RAF station during the Battle of Britain in 1940.
Ahh okay Adam thanks for that - makes sense!! :D
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
OMG Tangmere Is My Favourite Bullied Pacific Loco OMG Thank You
Ooh such good taste! No problem mate - glad you enjoyed her! :D
Cheers,
Sam :)
RAF station Tangmere famous Battle of Britain station . Nice RAF crest on the Battle of Britain locos.
Thanks for the info Robert - yes those looked great! :D
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
Looks good the mk2 look a bit like pullmans I mean the livery
Thanks a lot David! Yeah they do actually - they're definitely posh like the Pullmans!
Cheers,
Sam :)
Ooh Mk2 coaches! I love them! They look sorta mixed between modern and ancient aren't they!
And also, go buy a 1:76 model kit of a Spitfire fighter plane and try to mod it into wings and a fuselage and let the Loco Spitfire haul it around lmao XD
Thank you! I love them too - they look so cool! That sounds great too! :D
Cheers,
Sam :)
Nice full rack of those Pullman cars will look nice behind flying Scotchman
Ooh I agree - that would look great - I'll give that a go! :D
Thanks for watching,
Sam :)
19:09- hahahahahaha! Good to see Bullman tagging along!
Mooo! ;D
Happy New Year,
Sam :)
Nice trainpack Sam.
Thanks Marco! :D
oh my goodness gracious me those coaches are absolutely exquisite
shame about the initial problems
Thanks so much - yeah the coaches are fantastic with this set! :D
Thanks for watching,
Sam :)
Still only repaints of the old Hornby/Triang 1970's MK2's though...
so what they look gorgeous
oh my bad ebay seller haha, those coaches look amazing when can MR bullman go back onto the breakfast train haha, if there was a ood one out I think I found it no idea of its name of class but I think it was the blue steam train 20:50 :)
haha yeah, it was a shame - but it's all good now! I don't think I put an odd engine out this time - but that blue one definitely is unusual! :D
Thanks for watching,
Sam :)
yessssss! another video bout trainz
Absolutely! Hope you enjoy it ;3
Cheers,
Sam :)
I am still after a Triang Winston...I have the correct "rake" waiting including the funeral utility van..it will come along when the time is right😀
Ooh lovely - those really are good quality models, good luck with the search!
Thanks for watching,
Sam :)
I managed to get hold of one of those for nothing! Along with a Dublo Duchess, a bit of Triang TC stuff, a whole load of Princesses, a few jinties and dock shunters, and 08, and a few other bits. I rebodied mine with loco and tender bodies from 'Spitfire' though, as the originals were more than a bit worse for wear... I have a few of the vans, but not a pullman one. Don't really want one to be honest!
Most people could not repair that ß congratulations!!!
haha thank you - it was certainly very tedious to repair!
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
Hi Sam, the crest below the name plate is the RAF crest for RAF Tangmere, the Battle of Britain airfield she was named after. (Tangmere airfield was / is in Kent, and during the Battle Of Britain saw the most action of any RAF fighter Station.)
Apparently the Excalibur Express was a special consist of MK2 'Pullmanised' (no not Bullmanised ;) ) coaches used by Wessex Trains Limited for a number of steam hauled rail tours that were planned to run around the country in 2003-2004. However according to www.uksteam.info it appears most of the planned runs were cancelled for reasons that are not clear and the train only ran on a couple of occasions.
Have a great week
Jon
PS - Tangmere was a regular on charters around my way until a year or so back and I saw her going past my place a few times a year, although her boiler certificate has recently expired and she is currently stored at Carnforth awaiting overhaul.
Ahh many thanks for that Jon - I couldn't find too much about them online! I heard that Tangmere had a major incident at some point too, which doesn't sound too good?
Thanks again,
Sam :)
She did indeed on 07-03-2015 her AWS failed on a run between Southend and Bristol. She should have been taken off the train at Bristol due to the fault, but the operator, West Coast Rail, decided to just fit a plastic warning tag in the cab and allowed her to work the return leg. At 17.25 she was approaching Wootton Bassett at speed where she should have been held at a signal to allow a First Great Western HST from Swansea to Paddington to pass in front of her. However the faulty AWS allowed the crew to miss the distant signal, and then the drive made an error which over rode the the ATPS system. As a result she went sailing past the next signal at red at some 60+mph before the driver realised his mistake and brought her to a stand 700 yards beyond the signal. Fortunately the HST had already cleared the junction but was still in section when the incident happened, and disaster was only avoided by about 30 seconds.
The blame was placed partly on the driver, who got four month suspended sentence for reckless endangerment, but mainly on WCRC for slack safety procedures, improper training of footplate staff and poor maintenance . As they had already had a number of other incidents on their record which included allowing Orton Hall to run with a faulty ash pan resulting in a serve lineside fire at Bell Busk in Yorkshire, and allowing 45231 Sherwood Forester to haul trains with a faulty and isolated ATPS, the power that be took drastic and justified action that removed WCRCs operation license. Subsequent investigations discovered 7 other major incidents of defective locos being run on passenger services that had gone unreported and that the companies safety procedures were slap dash and a complete mess. WCRC only got their license back in late 2016 after a major operational review and a complete overhaul of its safety inspection procedures. By which time Tangmeres boiler certificate had expired.

Tangmere has sadly been somewhat 'jinxed' on the mainline, and seemed especially prone to failures an incidents, not always (as per the above) related to the mechanical side. Shame really, as there's now no mainline unrebuilt Bulleids. She's probably at the back of the Carnforth overhaul queue. Helps the chances of my personal favourite, Rebuild No. 34016 Bodmin though...
beautiful ha !
haha!
Very interesting! I must admit I didn't know this set existed. Bit disappointing about the gear problems - I suppose that's the risk with eBay but she runs really nicely now! Lukas :)
Thanks Lukas - haha I didn't know either until I saw it on Ebay! Yeah it's a shame, but it was very fixable! :D
Thanks for watching,
Sam :)

Oooooh, I just got one of those, I love the loco!
That's fantastic to hear - yes these locos are great, especially for less than £100! :D
Thanks for watching,
