So, an object so powerful, that we use almost for everything in our daily life, has no use when you are longing for someone, who died and is in heaven. All the dancer's movement, it represents the struggle of feelings the singer has, in his fight to kill that longing /pain /missing. So, at the end, he kills it with an arrow, and life goes on. There are lots of metaphors in the song and, fado, African, Arab, Indian, Japanese influences. After all, Portugal has all this influences as an ancestry (900 years) country. And we also left ours!

This is perfect for 2 reasons. If I close my eyes I'm automatically transported to Portugal and Portuguese heritage roots in the sounds. The visuals are obviously polarising because it's Eurovision. Not to mention the incredible deep lyrics mixed in the middle with something so banal as cellphones as a metaphor. Probably my favourite entry from my country.
THE SOUNDS. Portugal was prominent in the Age of Discovery. The sounds were mix of the cultures we visited. Asia and Africa. The Middle Eastern sound can be seen in our Fado which is the sound hes using. Before Portugal and Spain split from Hispania we were under the rule of the Muslim Caliphate of the Umayyad Empire. Whoever sees this will learn to apperceite it more.

Too far ahead of its time and I like it. I love how Katie and Louise have lyrics ready on hand to influence their opinions. I get it's a little out there so I was pleasantly surprised that most of the regional juries voted for this as their top favorite during the Festival da Canção final. :)

I don't know if it was explained before in the comments but this type of music is a mix between portuguese Fado, latin gypsy music and modern music. That is why it sounds so unique. Personally, I'm not a fan of Conan Osiris, but usually his songs are this catchy for this reason.
Everything in Conan have a meaning. Even the song. Bells in the beginning is to connect Portugal history with China, the African beat is to connect Portugal with Africa and Brazil, Middle east influence is to connect Portugal with Berber Invasion, the south asia sound is to connect Portugal with India. The way he sings, he morphs fado with flamenco, to connect Portugal with Spain. The mask represents Egyptian God Osiris representing the rebirth... the arrow claws is to represent some parts of the lyrics and same time some tradition Thai dances. His suit is a traditional suit of the north that is very use in Carnaval by caretos. Is to represent Celtic influences in Portugal. Obvious that people need to know history of Portugal to see this meanings in Conan song and staging.

Lets see another thing.... Portugal is singing on theyr native language. The other countries, most of it, are singing in English. Thats a shame, because on the true spirit of Eurovision all countries most sing on theyr language. Thats call respect. its about someone missing other person who is dead, and how that person feels, how he wants to call him, to heaven, cellphone is a metaphoric word for heart and soul. it has a message behind about accepting diferences, about how hard life can be, after you loose someone, after dead, and how you need to keep living. The sounds are portuguese bandolim, a type of guitar using in fado, and also ethnic in middle east, the beat is favela beat, and the sound is fado and gipsy. You need to understand that message of living without a person you lost forever, to understand the music. The mask is about the egiptian god, Osiris. Thata in the hands is about the lyrics he sings, near the end. The clothes are a modern interpretation of a traditional clothes here in Portugal used by masquarades called Caretos.

I don't know if it was explained before in the comments but this type of music is a mix between portuguese Fado, latin gypsy music and modern music. That is why it sounds so unique. Personally, I'm not a fan of Conan Osiris, but usually his songs are this catchy for this reason.
Everything in Conan have a meaning. Even the song. Bells in the beginning is to connect Portugal history with China, the African beat is to connect Portugal with Africa and Brazil, Middle east influence is to connect Portugal with Berber Invasion, the south asia sound is to connect Portugal with India. The way he sings, he morphs fado with flamenco, to connect Portugal with Spain. The mask represents Egyptian God Osiris representing the rebirth... the arrow claws is to represent some parts of the lyrics and same time some tradition Thai dances. His suit is a traditional suit of the north that is very use in Carnaval by caretos. Is to represent Celtic influences in Portugal. Obvious that people need to know history of Portugal to see this meanings in Conan song and staging.
It's a mixture of Fado with all other cultures where Portugal has been like Africa, Asia, America... If you check the lyrics you'll see the meaning of it.

We were just a small country but nowadays the Portuguese is one of the most spoken languages in the world. That's why our culture is not just an European culture but is much more than that. We are from Portugal, Brasil, Angola, Mozambique, Macau, Ceuta, Nagasaki, East Timor, Cabo Verde, São Tomé e Principe, Goa, Madeira, Azores, etc.
Telemóveis, the music, make us, the Portuguese and everybody who speaks Portuguese, fell our entire history and, at the same time, force us to look strait to the future...as brothers. And all these in just three minutes. It's a masterpiece.

Portugal won't win, we know that. It's probably going to be The Netherlands or Russia. But I'm proud of the point this guy is making showing his project origins, cultural influences and street dance and even of the risk our country is taking. This guy probably won't win, but he's giving people something to talk about and placing everybody's eyes on our otherwise forgetful country. No matter what happens, this is our boy. Go get'em, Conan!

I LOOOOOVE this one. Might be a little biased cause Portuguese roots but ok. I love how different it is and I wish I could be the dancer. Oh and Arne, vroeger was een deel van Indonesie in de handen van Portugal :) Ik denk vandaar ook dat het zo hetzelfde klinkt. Mijn opa kwam toevallig uit een Portugees deel uit Indonesie, en de talen hebben ook veel gelijkenissen :D!

Lets see another thing.... Portugal is singing on theyr native language. The other countries, most of it, are singing in English. Thats a shame, because on the true spirit of Eurovision all countries most sing on theyr language. Thats call respect. Now all whant easy escape, such sing in English, always the same type of music without quality,etc. When a unique song like this appears on the show, theres always a lot ot critics making fun or making very bad comments, but they forget what the others(most of them, not all) do: forgeting theyr own national identities.

No way. Nothing so different all the way. Salvador, brought up within the music elite, super rich family. Conan, brought up in the big areas in the outskirts of Lisbon, makes everything by himself, lyrics, music, production, works at home with a mobile phone, a synthesizer and PC. Conan's the reality man, Salvador's the romantic bloke.
Conan's got the wild creativity and random easiness to it, he's a natural.

its about someone missing other person who is dead, and how that person feels, how he wants to call him, to heaven, cellphone is a metaphoric word for heart and soul. it has a message behind about accepting diferences, about how hard life can be, after you loose someone, after dead, and how you need to keep living. The sounds are portuguese bandolim, a type of guitar using in fado, and also ethnic in middle east, the beat is favela beat, and the sound is fado and gipsy. You need to understand that message of living without a person you lost forever, to understand the music. The mask is about the egiptian god, Osiris. Thata in the hands is about the lyrics he sings, near the end. The clothes are a modern interpretation of a traditional clothes here in Portugal used by masquarades called Caretos.
