In the cruise industry, a head of security jumping to captain isn't uncommon. What often happens is someone has all the courses done to quality as captain, but no captain positions are open. So the person applies for another position to get their foot in the door, and waits for a captain position to open up. Then they can apply for it, and have a better chance at getting it, because the company is hiring from within. Though, why he got to captain the half a billion dollar cruise ship with his track record of accidents is another matter.

From my understanding, those prior accidents were not due to his incompetence. (I'm no expert, so take what I say with a grain of salt). However, there had been some minor red flags of him violating safety protocols in the past...

The problem with "I would just swim" is that at that height, jumping to the water might render you unconcious and even kill you. Those boats are extremely tall. Professionals jump from similar distances after years of training.
And then if you fall to close to the ship, which is sinking, it will drag you down. A sinking ship is a vortex that no human can scape on their own. It drags water with it, and the water drags you.
Now this ship was not sinking to fast, but it is enough to put you underwater, in complete darkness, for you to start to swim sideways or even downwards and die. Anyone who has been force down knows how easy it is to disorient yourself underwater, especially at night, when you do not even have light to possibly find the correct direction.
And on top of that, you are in the dark and near the rocks. You can either crack yourself in one, the waves may do it, you may drown, etc.
Also, even if it looks close, that is a massive distance to swim for most people. Even in daylight and with water glasses it is quite an exercise session.
At night, needing to keep your head above the water to seek the direction, etc? At least an hour of very precarious, very exhausting swimming.
And that is not even taking into account things like hypothermia, the weight of your wet clothing that drags you, etc.
In summary, it is one of those things that look much simpler than it actually is.

It should be noted that while the Captain does indeed belong in Jail, the rest of the crew were given effectively slaps on the wrists by comparison. (Hell they let the Helmsman escape twice) because it was effectively a PR Trial and made the Captain out as the sole bad actor in the event to cover up the multiple grievous errors the other people involved did. (The First Officer lied about saying there was confusion over who was in command, he was VIDEO RECORDED acknowledging the Captain was in command when he arrived on the bridge, which he also went against authority when he corrected the Helmsman when relaying the wrong direction coordinates, The Third Officer not relaying directional positions, and the Helmsman for being vastly underqualified.)
Effectively he was a scapegoat for every problem, not just the ones he caused because Italy didn't want word spreading about how corrupt their cruise industry is because it's a main souce of income for them. All of this is taken from IH's Q&A on Incognito Mode.

Generally speaking, as the Captain of the ship, Schettino is responsible for EVERYTHING that happens on board. So if his crew is garbage, it's his fault for not commanding properly. Literally none of this would have happened if HE didn't decide "Hey let's get as CLOSE to the shore as possible."
The rest were given lighter sentences because they threw Schettino under the bus, which isn't uncommon.
Of course Carnival Cruises getting off scott free, stock dip not withstanding, was a grievous example of Italy's really corrupt legal system.
So yeah, the captain wasn't the sole bad guy, but considering he WAS the captain AND considering he refused to call an emergency when there was one, PLUS he ditched his passengers AND crew, plus he didn't even help anyone after abandoning ship, yeah I think in MOST countries the rest of the crew would get preferred treatment if they testified. Speaking of captains abandoning their ships:
Joseph Clark has to be near the top of the list. He abandoned about 1,000 passengers on _SS Jedah_ , and reported her sunk. But the passengers took charge of the engineering crew, and sailed into port, towed, later. Yeah, lie exposed.
Yiannis Avranas and his bridge crew abandoned _Oceanos_ after she started to sink, and never told anyone else what was happening. In fact, they took their belongings and more lifeboats than they needed. And only the best covered lifeboats, too. This left entertainment staff, including guitarist Moss Hill to check out the bridge, which was empty, and then get in touch with the coast guard and coordinate a rescue. Hill would use this experience later to help evacuate a second ship.
Byron Voutsinas was captain of _SS Yarmouth Castle_ , and he and many of his crew abandoned it while burning. Captain Brown's _Bahama Star_ spotted the smoke, ordered full steam, and on finding the other ship's captain, forced him back aboard to help with the evacuation. Which was already a disaster because lifeboats were being lowered half-empty, occupied mostly by crew, and passengers still on deck were begging for lifejackets. Ninety people died. _Scandinavian Star_ is unfortunately a very similar story, with the added detail that the ship was in very poor condition when Hugo Larsen abandoned it.
Lee Joon-seok and his bridge crew were the first to leave _MV Sewol_ , a South Korean ferry that capsized because she was overloaded with both vehicles and cargo, none of which was tied down, and passengers, many of whom were school children on a day trip. _Sewol_ has below minimal ballast, with the pumps not functioning on the ageing and ill-maintained ship, when she was made to perform a turn more than 5 degrees sharp, and slowly capsized. Making things infinitely worse, a repeating automated message told passengers to remain in their rooms, and the kids trusted the adults to do the right thing. Meanwhile, coast guard refused to board and look for passengers, instead waiting for people to come out on deck. Nor would they allow foreign ships to render aid. In the end, civilian vessels that were nearby rescued more people than the Coast Guard did. And similar to Schettino, Lee tried to disguise himself by getting out of his uniform. It didn't work. Theories abound about why government officials stalled on both the rescue and the subsequent investigation, but it took so long and efforts were so incompetent, that nothing could be proven. Parents were infuriated, though, in particular because their children were sending them texts and calls in their final moments, so they knew not everyone had been rescued.
In direct contrast, Charles Butler McVay III must be mentioned as a victim of brutal office politics. _USS Indianapolis_ was ordered to sail through an area known to be patrolled by Japanese submarines, without being told there were submarines, and without an escort, so his ship would be sunk. McVay survived, and was court marshalled, and would later take his own life over the tragedy. The circumstances of the _Indianapolis_ sinking would only be uncovered much later, clearing McVay too late. Lists of cowardly captains do, tragically, still include him.

Then there's Captains William Turner and James Clarke Anderson of RMS _Lusitania._
Sent into the southern mouth of the Irish Channel, where the British Imperial Navy Intelligence Office had confirmed at least one Imperial German submarine was patrolling and attacking everything without warning; given only a vague warning to "watch for periscopes", in no particular area or timeframe; forced to sail at half speed to conserve fuel, leaving them unable to outrun any U-boat even if they did see it in time.
Anderson was killed in the ensuing attack, along with over a thousand innocent passengers and crew, and the Navy Intelligence Office conspired to frame Turner for treason as a cover-up to elude responsibility for their active decision to put the ship in danger, specifically to get American civilians killed and force the US into WWI on the Entente side.

This is far, far from the worst kind of maritime disaster that could happen, and one thing that helped a lot was that they were so close to shore, so people had more time to evacuate. That said, the loss of life is still tragic.
Fire at sea is probably the worst thing that could happen. _Lakota_ was an old ocean liner, where the designers used rich woods and lush carpets for the interior, and a lot of the ship's blemishes had been covered up with a fresh coat of paint (which even got in the way of the davits that lower the lifeboats, but that's the lesser issue when you haven't changed the ropes to make sure you can lower the lifeboats if you need to). The fire started near the hair salon, and spread very quickly thanks to the wood and carpets. Crew and passengers had to deal with being cut off from areas of the ship by the fire, and fortunately some did get off alive and were rescued, but since a lot of elders were aboard, they couldn't survive if they had to jump into the water and swim. A fire also took the _Morro Castle_ .
One of the worst maritime disasters was the collision between the ferry, _MV Dona Paz_ , and the freighter, _MV Vector_ , and it was all caused by gross incompetence and cutting corners straight from the top: both ships were uncertified, unseaworthy, and in poor condition. Their crews were similarly untrained and uncertified, and the night the crash happened, both bridge crews were basically drinking and partying, leaving the helm in the hands of an untrained intern. Who could see the other vessel approaching very slowly, but didn't know how to steer to avoid the hit. Oil from _Vector_ was soon everywhere, and ignited. Passengers aboard _Dona Paz_ soon found themselves having to decide between going down with the sinking, burning ship, or taking their chances in the shark-infested waters, where the surface was also burning because of all the petroleum. Two of the survivors, a father and daughter, ended up disfigured, but survived because they jumped. What made it infinitely worse, though, was that the operators for the ferry had overbooked by several times the vessel's capacity. Between the two ships, about 9,000 people were lost, and none of the _Vector_ crew survived.
And the damage fire can cause also brings up the _SS Normandie_ . During the Second World War, the Americans seized the ship from her French crew, and decided to convert her into a troop carrier. But during the conversion process, one of the workers accidentally set fire to a stack of lifejackets. Partly because the fire suppression system had been shut off during the work, the fire spread. New York's fire department was pumping seawater into the ship to try to gain control, and they refused to listen to the French crew or the Russian designer. They ended up capsizing the ship, and she had to be sold for scrap in the end. Thankfully the conversion of _RMS Queen Mary_ was done in Australia, otherwise the Grey Ghost wouldn't have been so successful.

So apparently in the cruise line business you can be licensed to be a captain but due to the limited number if ships, it's normal to work in other positions (like security) until a captain position opens.

    • @xenowerks7020
      @xenowerks7020 Год назад +10

The statement of going from security to captain is misleading and lacks context.
To become a captain you must first complete the curriculum and have worked in every position on a ship. Its the same as any other apprenticeship. (no pun intended)
Security was the last position he worked in before he was eligible to become captain.
Edit: although it is entirely possible like you said he was already eligible for captain just didn't have a position available and was biding time in security.

Seafarer here, the actual helm command for degrees is NEVER, example "Three Sixteen" it should be "Three One Six", slow and loud, to avoid confusion, once the helmsman received the command he repeats it, when the ship's heading is now steady at 316°, he repeat the command again informing the officer that th ship is now heading 316°
The reason for this is to avoid confusion
Saying "three sixteen", the helmsman might misheard it as "three SIXTY"
If the way they're saying it as "three twenty-five" is UN-FUCKN'-PROFESSIONAL

Yeah, Rudder Commands are given by Rudder Angle from 5° to maximum 35° which is Hard Port/Starboard, but they usually give compass bearings cuz they use the compass more, all we have to do is turn the ship to the commanded bearing and keep her steady at the given bearing

now the 3rd officer on the other hand, yeah no they were shitty through and through, wrong relays, and no positional coordinates.
the helmsman, well, language barrier, they should have gave him more training, maybe put him on another ship where he can understand what the crew was saying, hell maybe even not made him the helmsman in the first place.

Like NOW i'd happily go back and pay that £2 over being conviced of manslaughter. I feel like anyone in comments or chat could do a better job captaining a ship. Humanity -10
