I love the "STOP" signs on the very large lift and swing bridges, I wonder how many boats tried to just ram through before some, no doubt very well paid desk warior, issued an instruction for these signs to be put up. lol
Heh... I’ve always wondered about those. I have a feeling they’ve had to be added to try and help those not exactly familiar with boats from finding out what immovable objects feel like. M
Certainly would not like to do this single handed! Great to have the canal almost to yourselves. Cheers peeps and I hope spring brings better weather at least dryer. Keep safe and keep vlogging please. M
We would like to thank you two and all the other narrowboat vloggers that we watch for helping us stay sane over the last twelve months. We were unable to travel to the UK in 2019 due to family issues but next Sunday we are heading your way. Hopefully we will see you on the cut.
It looks like you are the only people on the canals in that area. Cheers guys hope you are all ok. Take care you three. Thanks Alan. X Cabin Cruiser Adventure.
I enjoyed your vlog. our home mooring is not far from Bramwith along the Stainforth and Keadby canal at Blue water Marina. the lock keeper is in attendance most days at Sykhouse lock.looking forward to more of your vlogs.
More coming soon... we passed through there several videos down the road (canal?), when we get stuck for a while in Thorne before battening down the hatches for Ciara and Dennis in Keadby itself. M
Interesting to hear your Dad was born around this area . I lived here for 50 yrs . Yes the sun does occasionally shine but not as often as the river Don floods . Keep dry if ya can . We moored behind you at this point in your journey but only for one night on our way to Doncaster.
Yeah, Jo's dad is from Fishlake ... probably a few days after you were behind us we had a visit and toured around the town, to see how it was recovering from the floods. Quite a pleasant area, but yeah not totally taken with the weather! M
Hi your vlogs through the winter have been great, just working on our boat getting ready to get back on the water soon, looks cold out there keep the vlogs coming you’re given us enough ideas of places to go for years.
Thanks again Jo & Michael, for another interesting vlog, despite the weather.! A reminder that our wet/windy Winter began in October/November & is still continuing in March.!
I'd been waiting for a great view of the aqueduct gates since I'd read about them a year or so ago! Neat to see them, especially when the river was so recently closing the navigation (always sad if the navigation is shut, obviously, but from an engineering standpoint it's a sight to see with the river debris still hung up on the aqueduct). Great to see you three on new waterways, even if it was rainy.
Minimal List Yup. That said, If it’s hard to see over the occasional bags of coal or Jo’s plants sometimes, that part might be easier if the boat was bent into a bit of a horseshoe shape from an errant gate drop. Might make using the side hatches sketchy if they’re slightly under water, tho.
Thanks Jo & Michael - lovely job as always! Especially liked the big tanker and the fact you are now going on canals that are new to me. Much appreciated ...
@@MinimalList I now live in Canada but I grew up in Cambridge so I am familiar with the River Cam, The Great Ouse, the Middle Levels etc. I know it is a looong way down the River Nene to get to the (sometimes boring perhaps) Fen waterways, but none of the other Narrow Boat vloggers have gone that way - how about you guys being the first? Just a thought. Cheers!
Ah, Yorkshire, God's own country, supposedly. Lovely vlog, and the canal, when the sun shines it is a very pretty one. Good to see George in good spirits. Take care
We were moored at Barnby Dun services the first time we encountered Exol Pride. It was barely on tick over but you could feel it coming miles before it arrived. I went up to do the lift bridge and all the cars and vans stopped except one Herbert in a black audi. As the bridge started to go up he rammed his foot down and squealed up the bridge and off the other side in best Streets of San Francisco style. Unluckily for him there just happened to be a police car coming the other way who did a 180 and chased after him.
I do like a George vlog as he pulls Jo along the towpath and supervises the lift bridges...the oil tanker was very impressive...but did you find a Lidl ...now that would be really impressive
It (was) dreich opp there when you recorded and driech down here as I write. Been raining for 4 months of more. Doomed, we're all doomed. Bless you for keeping cheerful!
Heading south along the eastern canals now, you”ll soon be back here in civilisation,, I.e the south of England, sadly. It’s been a long journey ssince you left the marina in Surrey boy, thanks for all of your posts Michael, Good fun watching the all and following your progress, thanks again boy, Jimmy..
Exol Pride kind of blurs the lines of where a boat becomes a ship! Glad you've had some sunshine, the debris from the floods looked really bad. Stay safe.
Line not blurry at all: that's a ship! Pull away from the bank without looking over your shoulder in front of that in your narrow boat and you'll learn the difference - the hard way.
I think that's more of an aphorism than a hard-and-fast truth ... some of the large nuclear subs can and do carry other subs docked to them, but they're both boats by tradition. The US Navy calls it if a ship if it heels outside on a sharp turn, a boat if it heels inside ... it's weird! M
@@MinimalList Just going on what I was taught from British Navy tradition. Hydrofoiling ships heel inward? scuppers that definition. ... OK.. so where does "Yacht" come from and refer to ??
This seems to be more of a commercial canal, though not used much for that these days - rather than something for recreational canalboaters, but it is off season, I guess. Is it busy in the Summer, then? There seem to be plenty of moorings, but not much in the way of visitor facilities (or anything much else) in this area. It seems a bit featureless too, other than the swing bridges etc. but still interesting enough in that it's rather different to a lot that we have seen with you over the past few years. Thanks once more.
Definitely still sees some commercial traffic, though I believe nowadays that's pretty much exclusively the Exol Pride. Facilities are actually not bad around here, once you get onto the South Yorkshire Navigations proper, after the Don Aqueduct. Almost every service point has showers, and unlike many locations we won't mention elsewhere they actually work! M
I don't know if you have one. But you might investigate the purchase of a WiFi booster/amplifier. Would be a small outside antenna. Would very much help with your receiving and sending. If your trying to do it from inside your boat, remember your in a steel hulled boat, which pretty much acts like a Faraday Cage. Stay and warm.
Yeah, we've actually got external antennas attached to the modem; they do a really good job of picking up the signal _if_ one exists, the problem is there's quite a few places around with no real coverage, sadly. M
We pass it a couple videos from now... so inviting, although apparently you’re not supposed to moor beside it! Ultimately we had to meet a manned lock a bit further down due to flood conditions and couldn’t stop! M
Great vlog😃. The Don aqueduct didn't seem very high or was it an optical illusion given how much the river was in flood? Bet you were glad you were safely moored when the Exol Pride came past it was huge and couldn't have been much room to get past and a large bow wave ?
I don't think the Don Aqueduct is particularly high even when the Don is a trickle, but the water was definitely much closer than it normally is. And yeah, wouldn't want to be passed by the Exxol Pride, quite a lot of wake behind that one! M
Minimal List ...saved some money then not going into Meadow Hall....Sheffield a City not a town....Chesterfield Canal Trust are striving on to get their last 7 miles completed to get it linked up from Chesterfield to the river Trent....and are hoping to get a Marina with a link through to the river Don to make a canal loop linking to the Yorkshire navigations....take a look on their web page x
You were fortunate to have a .ockie at Sykehouse lock, we did it on our own and it was a nightmare, you have to get the sequence of the buttons just right and the instructions were not clear , took us ages to figure it out.
Worry not, we'll head down that way in a later video, got to get to Sheffield first! And yeah, the sliding rail bridge is pretty amazing, though I'll say there's really not much to see from the boat! M
That part of Yorkshire looks so much better by canal... I assume the Exol Pride has someone driving ahead to open/close bridges as i cant see that stopping to pick up crew and doggy very often! Surprised nobody ay C&RT has developed a password protected app to remotely operate the bridges.. or even a long range RFID trigger on boats... or a pole switch suspended mid canal like they have in France.
As I understand it when the Exol Pride needs to move the CRT coordinates getting someone to each lock in time to keep it open for her ... cause yeah she really doesn't hang about! M

If you check out his painting a busy day on a Dutch canal, you will see the bridge in the background and Perciverence in the foreground. I am certain it's you. 😁
Interesting about the Exol Pride: 1. She's displaying the symbol for radioactive cargo. Is there a nuclear power station where she was headed? 2. She's "light," drawing a bit less than 1.8 metres in that first shot and "deep" in the second, drawing about 2.35 metres on the way back in the second shot. Vessel data: Length - 60.79M, Beam - 6.05M, Draft - 2.2M. (It appears she gets loaded deeper than her listed draft.)
narrowboat Awyeganna that’s odd as it is the symbol for radioactive material. If there was a fire on board emergency personnel would assume that to be the case. As a radiographer I thought the ship has a source on board to shoot radiographs of piping
@@narrowboatawyeganna447 If they're showing a bow thruster, they're doing it wrong. The thruster symbol is a 4-blade prop and never black and yellow. Also, she's built in 1979 and I never saw a vessel of that size and age with a bow thruster (retrofits are a possibility, I suppose). Another point, she's clearly been "man-handled" quite a bit by tugs (as evidenced by the wear and tear visible at the bows). With a bow thruster, that shouldn't be the case.
wesley11577. She has a Jamstram Type OIF bow thruster fitted hence bow thruster indication symbols. The Exol Pride unloads her oil at Rotherham then reverses back down the canal past Tulleys Boat Yard, with moored boats to one side to a turning point then heads back to Hull via Goole. You should see where she goes on later vlogs and see that she would not be able to manoeuvre without a thruster and risking damage to other boats. She also has a hydraulic wheel house which lowers to get under the bridges, which you may also see later. So Bow Thruster indication not Radioactive. She used to be called Humber Pride and her plans can be found on line. Also on the first glimpse she is returning to Hull having discharged her cargo of oil at Rotherham and the second glimpse she is heading to Rotherham laden with her oil cargo.
@UCBGFO6kxG3FyM9dXsQffCKA Huh! And I see a photo of her in Exol "livery" and a proper symbol for the thruster. Makes me wonder why they'd use a radiation symbol when, in an emergency, confusion about a serious issue isn't a good thing.
Good to see a commercial load on the canal, it looked to me oil barge was drawing about 2m. I think draft markings are Roman numerals for feet and Arabic for meters. Was the symbol that looked like the radioactive symbol used to indicate a bow thruster? Like the length of your videos.

Hi guys, I have finally caught up , all 261 episodes from Pyrford do Doncaster and all points in between. You guys have certainly had an adventure and I'm asking RUclips for a silver subscribe button for my personal achievement. Is there anything you would change about the boat knowing what you do now ? I'm thinking possibly a pram hood to give you extra drying room and save you freezing your touches off in the winter maybe. Can't wait for the financial stars to align so we can start the search for our boat and maybe see you on the network one day. Great job on the series and thanks.
Great job on watching them all, now that’s dedication! Hopefully you get that boat soon! As for what we might change... honestly I’m not sure I’d want a pram hood, because in a lot of places rain and very low bridges seem to coincide! Main changes I’d consider, money-no-object sort of thing, would be a flame toilet, a significantly better shower pump, some room SOMEWHERE in the blasted boat for an apartment-size washing machine, and a diesel drip stove or other, more reliable form of heat. I don’t mind getting damp, so long as I can have a decent shower, a bit of hot water, and a chance to recover! M
When I read that Perseverance was going to land in Jezero Crater, an ancient dry lake-bed on Mars, in February 2021, I thought to myself that the Minimalist crew were in for some interesting times.
Well, Jo works on the videos, editing like mad as we speak. At the moment I'm mainly doing volunteer work for an online education platform that teaches programming languages, though when I eventually go back to work it'll probably still be in visual effects for feature films. M
Well, we had such a long period of pushing like mad and not stopping that we built up a lot of backlog at the same time we simply weren’t sitting still long enough to edit. Jo’s been trying really hard to catch us up, but there’s still several more to go, and we’re back into moving the boat time, so hard to tell how soon we’ll be caught up. M
She's a pretty big boat, that's for sure. As for the outro, the problem is that in these dark days it's simply too dark inside to get a decent shot, so the video ends up next to unuseable. One of these days I might need to invest in some flat panel lights so we can deal with that, but basically as is we can only reliably shoot indoors when there's some sun to stream in the windows! M
No Wifi? I'm outta there. One of my biggest concerns about Corona virus is if it shuts down internet with ISP folks home sick. How do they expect folks to shut-in for 2 weeks without internet? I got food and water.. but I need my Webbys and Vids

That is indeed a bowthruster indicator, not a radiological warning! M
Roger Miller. "" It Takes All Kinds To Make A World "" Big and little, men and woman, boys and girls. but i'am the kind of guy hard luck sure gives a wirl, but i guess it takes all kinds to make a world. Keep up the good work. =)
Be on the look out for those belters!
Dammit NASA for blowing our surprise! Olympus Mons or Bust! M
What work do you both do? :)
Well, Jo works on the videos, editing like mad as we speak. At the moment I'm mainly doing volunteer work for an online education platform that teaches programming languages, though when I eventually go back to work it'll probably still be in visual effects for feature films. M
Great video as always. Just one question, why is there such a long delay in posting videos from when they are shot? Keep up the good work.
We have a word in the US Kwiturbitchin. Just do it.
Just wondering, but have you been impacted by recent floods in the last few weeks ?
Only by being delayed in a few locations. The canals themselves are rarely really impacted, but we get stuck waiting for river sections to drop. M
Good afternoon, do you know the next Mars rover is to be called Perseverance? You have subscribers in high places!
We've heard, and we've considered suing NASA! :-) M
Is your boat heavier on the starboard side?
Nope, it’s balanced slightly to port, floating free. M
👍
I'm sure somebody else has asked you guys before, but have you ever tracked how many miles of canal Jo and George walk in a year? I bet its alot LOL
We’ve never tracked it, but it’s in > 1500 mile range! M
Please tell me you have never called your boat Percy
It slips out occasionally! M
Just shows you how much metal is under water when exol pride is full, when it's raining why don't you finish the outro inside?.
Seeing as my comment to your last big push vlog was that you both look tired, I apologise for any offence given, none was intended.
It’s okay, we were tired after all. M
clarity of diction would appreciated,(mike placement might be the Problem
Watch out for covid-19
If I see it on the canals I'll let you know! M
No Wifi? I'm outta there.
One of my biggest concerns about Corona virus is if it shuts down internet with ISP folks home sick. How do they expect folks to shut-in for 2 weeks without internet? I got food and water.. but I need my Webbys and Vids
I rather think the internet will survive COVID-19. M
