This is such a wonderful educational video on my favorite Calla Lilies. I am now a member. People like you are precious, you are able to communicate clearly your knowledge.
I’ve been growing these for a few years now in the ground but here in Ontario our winters are too cold so I need to dig up the bulbs and store in a cardboard box with holes in a cool place. This past spring I decided to plant most of the bulbs in planters. Well the planters are blooming way ahead of those in the ground. Same care, fertilizer, water and of course encouragement.
I have yellow and purple/pink in my front yard I have been really really lucky I randomly saw these bulbs 3 years ago and when we did our flowers front entry these are what we planted and to be honest have not really given them much care except pulling the weeds even have same old mulch from last year because circumstances we did not get our flower beds ready this year and they still came back and multiplied . I LOVE them so much these are going to be our MAIN flower. I love being able to cut them and place in vase they are gorgeous and last a week or more in vase as long as I change the water every other day. These have become my absolute favorite because of the ease of growing just letting Mother Nature due her thing and also having them for a beautiful touch of fresh cut inside my home!
We have a lovely deep purple one aswell as those others. May have to check if I can find a yellow one though! We have them in pots around the base of some extra large arum Lillie’s and they’re all on blocks in our backyard pond so that approx the bottom 1-2” of the pot is in the water. They absolutely love it! Flowers last honestly ages 👍🏼
I was thrilled to get one last year with blooms soooooooo dark purple, practically black! Gorgeous! Thrilled again just last week to see them popping up again - I didn't think they'd made it through the winter, but they did!!
I just got a purple calla lily for my birthday. I love plants and I do hope that this one survives. She has 8 beautiful flowers. I live in Florida so outside is a big no. I placed her on a table by a window and she gets the morning sun. I really hope she will thrive. Thanks for your video and any advice will be greatly appreciated.
Thank You!!! I have a potted/with good drainage, indoor white Cala Lilly (since December 2022 (I live in Long Island, NY). Do I wait for the entire plant to die off before clipping? Or should I prune as they yellow & die? Also, can I save the seeds and plant them? What is preferred: indoor or outdoor? or both? Thanks again for your useful info,
Hi, Regina. Thanks for the questions! You can prune the plants as the leaves yellow and die. I've never saved the seeds, so I can't speak to how they will do. I would, however, recommend growing them outdoors (once it is warm enough in your area...above 60 degrees). Hope this helps.
Soft rot got mine one year... never removed it and left for dead... two years later IT REGREW.. not enough for blooms but it had a few leaves... the rizomes are amazing!!
Thankyou for your video. My husband just purchased Calla Lilly in a container from Lowes from a discounted rack at 1/2 price because it’s flowers were bent over. We are in 9B. Or do I just wait til they all turn brown, cut back & leave til next year? Do they only bloom in spring? Thank you for any tips! Marlyn a Backyard Gardner…
I've been growing Calla lilies in pots for at least 5 years now. Because my zone is allegedly 7A, but I think it's more like Zone 6B, I bring them inside after they start to lose leaves and leave them in a dark spot in the house, or failing that, I cover the pots with something - cloth, cardboard or whatever, so the pots stay dark. Usually, because the house is warmer than the outside, they start to shoot up in April, but I usually wait until at least the first-second week of May before bringing them outside and put them on my deck. The colors I have are yellow and a dark red, but I understand there are white, purple and black ones. I'm trying to get my hands on some of the white and black ones.
@@tishmoore2732 Really? What color do the "black' ones start out at and do you sell the corms or seeds? I just bought seeds, but I'm not sure I'm doing it right so this version of "seed starting" may well be another failed experiment. 😼 As an update, I purchased six (6) corms of the white calla lilies and, lo and behold! I didn't kill them! They're coming up and I can't wait to see what they look like. Now only if I didn't kill the seeds of the black ones I got... 🤞
@@taichitauri3360 I have just started to sell the corms, advising that if they are planted in all purpose compost they will remain black/purple. However, if the corms are planted in Ericaceous potting compost the colour may change over time. I have to say that because I don't know yet, I am hoping that this time next year I may see some colour changes, although I will keep some of the black/purple ones because I really do like them and the flower stems are now reaching almost 36 inches, which good sized flower heads. Their original colours were; Pink, White and Yellow. I have not had any seeds from them but it has crossed my mind to see if I can get them to produce seeds and grow them on from seed, but, it takes about 3 years apparently for them to flower from seed. The way I treat the corms once they have gone dormant is two fold. Some of them I leave in the pots, once I have cut all the dead foliage off and don't water them until I start to see shoots coming up and then only water sparingly initially. Some I take out of the pots, clean the corms and then leave them to air dry for about three days. I then wrap them in kitchen paper and store them in a dark place, which happens to be one of my kitchen cupboards. When I see the shoots from the ones I left in the pots I check the ones in the kitchen cupboard, to see if there is any activity. Once I see activity I repot them. Oh and the ones I leave in the pots. once I see shoots, I put new compost in the pots. From the original three plants I started with I have multiple corms now, too many for me to grow in my house
@@tishmoore2732 That is exceedingly interesting. Of course, I've been getting flowers and seeds on mine for quite a few years now and it's only been this year that I looked into working with seeds. However, I prefer getting the corms because I'm really new at this seed thing and, although I have one "experiment" going (😸), I'm not sure it's going to be successful. On the other hand, some of the ones that are blooming, obviously have multiplied radically to the point where, in the fall, I'm going to have to split them out because I've never taken them out of the pot I originally planted them in, and they've multiplied so much there's really no more room for them. I never swapped out any dirt or anything; just covered the pots so they stayed dark, and maybe mulched the top so assorted weeds didn't grow. BTW, the white corms I just planted are growing!!!!! Hi. I have been given a yellow calla lily house plant for mother's day (March in UK) the yellow flowers seem to be turning green. What am I doing wrong? TIA x
Mine also turned green. Thought that was normal. Now the leaves are turning yellow so I cut down to about 3”. Hoping to keep it alive over winter (in a pot). Any suggestions would be appreciated.
Yes, just make sure you are giving them enough bright, indirect light! And if you do repot them, repot them in a well draining soil, as they are prone to root rot. Only repot them when they are root bound (you can see roots circling around the pot OR the rootball is mostly roots and now soil.) Let me know if you would like to see any other topics covered!
I have a couple questions for you: 1. Is the light bright? 2. how many hours of light is it getting. Typically when the flowers start to turn green, that means the plant isn't getting enough light.
The apartment I live in does not have much light, this is probably the cause, although it is in the balcony, the balcony it is closed with windows. the florists told me that the plant would not need much light :( Sorry for my bad english..
Most calla lillies that come from nurseries are grown in low oxygen, poor quality soil. Thats why they get root rot and die. I immediately repot them in well draning potting mix or plant them in a semi shade are. Mine have come back year after year.

HELP! Got a plant for Mother’s Day and kept in the pot. The leaves turned yellow so I cut down to about 3”. Hoping to keep it alive over winter (in the pot). Any suggestions would be appreciated.
Make sure it is receiving bright, indirect light. Watering about 1/month.
Hi! I bought a pot two years ago, and it is still in the pot. I see greens pops out between 1.5 to 5 inches long. They seem to be overcrowded in a pot. Is it too late to separate rhizomes? If it is too late when is the best time to separate them?
I would recommend separating in the late summer or early fall.
@@greensideupgardengifts2165 Thank you!!!
Hi. I received a calla lily for Mother’s Day. I would like to put it into a bigger pot and place outside. What kind of soil should I use?
Use a soil that is well draining! Orchid mix will work or you can use regular potting soil and add perlite to it to help with draining.
My yellow Cala turned purple this year.
Wow! That's kinda cool!
I bought my wife a Cala Lilly for Valentine’s Day this year. The flowers have turned green and the outside leaves are falling. Should we trim the leaves and increase the sunlight?
Yes and yes! Bright, indirect light is best for these cuties!
@@greensideupgardengifts2165 thank you so much!
I'm in southern Ontario Canada. No idea what zone I'm in. My calla lilies didn't come back unfortunately.
Oh no! That's a bummer!
Hi can we grow calla lilly indoor..
Hi, yes you can! It likes bright, indirect light and medium water.
I grow some Cana's from seeds since last six months ago .they get two feet height with good foliage but aren't flowering. What to do kindly guide me how get my first flower .??
What kind of light is it receiving?
Do they survive indoor in a pot? I am in zone 7
Yes, as long at they receive bright indirect light, they will survive inside.
I bought a grow kit from big lots and I planted it in a pot and out it out on my balcony. It's been a couple weeks and nothing
I see this post is from 5 days ago...any changes?
@@greensideupgardengifts2165 no changes
Hi! Do you have any tips? My white flowers on my calla lily are turning green.
How much light is it getting?
@@greensideupgardengifts2165 it is on a windowsill and gets full sun half the day. I'm wondering if it was forced to flower for UK mother's day.
I am in Illinois. I think I have a bulbb that is a couple of years old and
Hi.... Mam.. I am from India... Before one month i planted Cala lily bulb but unfortunately plant didn't grow properly only little shoot come up... What to do with it?
Try digging it up and relocating it or even planting it in a container.
Thank you 😊
Mine is dying! I have no idea what to do! I originally bought it because it look so sad and I thought I could save it! I repotted it with organic fertilizer I downloaded an app to help me water it correctly and it's still slowly dying all 3 buds have rotten off.. idk what to do now.. I don't want to give up
Can you give me more info? How much light? How much water? What kind of soil? Do you have drainage holes?
@@greensideupgardengifts2165 I have it on the patio bright indirect light, and I water it until I see it drain , and I make sure the soil is dry-ish before watering it again. It was organic soil.
May I know how you get so many flowers? Mine only get 1-2 flowers every year and that's it. I'm finding using 15-30-15 fertilizer makes them not bloom at all.
Hi there! There are a couple plants in each pot.
@@greensideupgardengifts2165 How many do you generally put in each pot? 3?
Hi. I have been given a yellow calla lily house plant for mother's day (March in UK) the yellow flowers seem to be turning green. What am I doing wrong? TIA x
How much light is it getting?
Same thing is happening to mine.
Mine too!
Mine also turned green. Thought that was normal. Now the leaves are turning yellow so I cut down to about 3”. Hoping to keep it alive over winter (in a pot). Any suggestions would be appreciated.
Can calla lilies be kept year round as an inside plant? Could I repot the plant in a larger container to give the roots more room?
Yes, just make sure you are giving them enough bright, indirect light! And if you do repot them, repot them in a well draining soil, as they are prone to root rot. Only repot them when they are root bound (you can see roots circling around the pot OR the rootball is mostly roots and now soil.)
Let me know if you would like to see any other topics covered!
Indoors?
Yes, they can live indoors. Is that what you were asking?
My Calla yellow flowers are also turning green.. is this normal? Also it has indirect light.
I have a couple questions for you: 1. Is the light bright? 2. how many hours of light is it getting.
Typically when the flowers start to turn green, that means the plant isn't getting enough light.
The apartment I live in does not have much light, this is probably the cause, although it is in the balcony, the balcony it is closed with windows. the florists told me that the plant would not need much light :(
Sorry for my bad english..
They grow in zone 5
Great!
Most calla lillies that come from nurseries are grown in low oxygen, poor quality soil.
Thats why they get root rot and die.
I immediately repot them in well draning potting mix or plant them in a semi shade are.
Mine have come back year after year.
Great practice!
Iam from indonesia, wish to have yellow red purple , pleasee
