Dara & Ian. A great video. I’ve been to Colmar once on a river cruise from Basle, Switzerland to Amsterdam. It was a morning’s stop, so we had a short walk around the lovely town, saw the lovely buildings and market near where had lunch. Unfortunately, I didn’t have chance to get food there, I was having plenty good food and wines on the cruise! Alsace & Lorainne are places I remember from History in school, these places on the France Germany border and changed hands every time there was a war! Nowadays you cross the border easier than you go from one US state to another. When I worked on Staten Island (NY) taking the ferry to Manhattan, we obviously went passed Liberty. I knew it was designed by a French man but didn’t realise he was from Colmar. The ferry was the easiest place to see Liberty from. I recommended it to anyone who asked, it was free!
Funny you should say that, we just visited New York City in November and took the ferry so that we could get a good view of the Statue of Liberty! I might publish that blog one of these days, but at the moment I'm working on getting through my Europe footage from September 2022!!!! 🙄 I really did love the food in Colmar.🩷... and it was a fun surprise to see that there was the linkage to the United States!🇺🇸🇫🇷

Would love to visit his museum, but understand your wise decision to go for the sweets instead.🤣🤣 They pay homage to him there too, in a much sweeter way! Enjoyed the ducking and lovely canal ride. Very Disney/Fairy-tale but it just oozes medieval French architecture, absolutely love the windows and the paintings, they are so pretty. In love with this, will 100% be putting this on the map, thank you Dara and Ian for a wonderful video

Bravo Dara!! I didn’t want the video to end! You captured perfectly this beautiful town, now it’s on the list!! Johns family is from Barr North of Colmar. I’m reading 2 Julia Childs books at the moment and have become fascinated with France and French cuisine. Your video has just sealed the deal for me, I have to go! Excellent excellent video!!!! ~Cara 💖
Those tarte flambee or flammekuchen were pizza's French cousin... super thin crust that was as thin as a crepe but much crispier. A great combination. The one we had at the first place was perfection! I've been craving it ever since I started editing that vlog!
Italy, which has the original Venice, has a 'little Venice' town, it's at the other end of the Venice lagoon, the town is called Chioggia and has canals but on a smaller scale to Venice. It's on my list to visit because I'm curious to find an alternative to Venice with a lot less people!
Loved the gelato, Ian's one was rocher and blueberries, myrtille is blueberries, I only know that as mertilli is the Italian for blueberries and I just think of the Italian word for something when I need a French word, and with a French word can work out what it means thanks to the fact it look likes the Italian one. Yay for romance languages! I use the same principle with Spanish!
Colmar seems to be everything that is great about France. But the tartes are pizzas French people. Tres magnifique anyway. Not sure what gelato or glace I would have tried? Definitely the cannabis just because. But probably also the violette, the malaga, the licorne (what does unicorn taste like?), the myrtille (because blueberries are healthy), and smurf, the stracciatella... um... when it comes to gelato there is no way I'm just having one. French ice cream is excellent. Almost as good as gelato (in Italy). I don't think I could go by the chocolate museum either. The canal ride looked like fun. I agree, there is only one Venice though. Would you believe we've been to Venice 3 or 4 times and as yet have never done the gondola thing? Next time. Maybe. 😂 There's nothing like a piece of French cheese so no wonder you bought a wedge the size of a building foundation stone. Colmar looks like an Alsace gem. Some of it seems very similar to Strasbourg which was the first place we ever visited in France. Brilliant intro to Colmar. Will be very tempting to put on the French bucket list for next time.
I do think Strasbourg is similar to Colmar... but you need to visit both:-) I can do without trying cannabis gelato, but I should have tasted the unicorn flavour just to report back what it tastes like! I've been to Venice and not done a gondola ride either! So, you are not alone ;-) That made me smile... "wedge the size of a building foundation stone"... quite right! Which now makes me want to build a castle out of cheese!!! lol Thanks for your lovely comment as always, Shane! Hope your 2024 is off to a good start! XX
@@MagentaOtterTravels we went to Pienza in Tuscany where the local cheese is pecorino. Some of the cheese wheel rinds have exactly the same colour and texture as the stonework to some of the churches. So we were sitting on the steps of a church eating cheese, prosciutto and bread and I swear the chunks of cheese looked like they pulled pulled from the walls of the church. Or the churches really are made of cheese. 😂 Nice relaxing start to 2024. Work shutdown till after this weekend. I hope you two have had a marvelous start to the year too.

Colmar is a nice town, but also a very successful tourist trap. Nice now, but heavilly fought over for hundreds of years, including both world wars. It's as German as it is French.
I am fascinated by places like that. We also visited Bolzano in Italy, which I will hopefully do a Vlog of one of these years, and it was both Italian and German in the same way. I think we avoided the worst part of the tourist season because we were in Colmar in September...

Beautiful city, one of the reasons why I love going to the UK and Europe during the early (It gets too hot in the later months!) summer months is that all the trees have leaves and the flowers are blooming, it just adds so much colour to the landscape. Even a rainy day looks lovely!
Yes it was a bit rainy but in the end we had a great time there. And I agree it is best to avoid the height of summer!
Love the magenta train, Dara! How come Ian isn't wearing something magenta too? Watching now. Or have you figured that out? 🤣🤣
Ian pretty much refuses to wear magenta 😔
What a magical boat ride! We used to live in the Venice of America! LOL
Where is the Venice of America? My aunt used to live in Venice Beach! 😜 heehee
@@MagentaOtterTravels Fort Lauderdale, Fl. "More than 300 miles of canals weave through the greater area, with 165 miles of those running through Fort Lauderdale itself."
@@WITYTRAVELS I had no idea! How interesting
Have always wanted to visit Colmar, it's actually breath taking how beautiful it is. Very Disney/Fairy-tale but it just oozes medieval French architecture, absolutely love the windows and the paintings, they are so pretty. In love with this, will 100% be putting this on the map, thank you Dara and Ian for a wonderful video
Thank you so much! It really is a magical place... I hope you get to visit!
It’s a beautiful city. Looks like a stunning place to visit. Loved the menu picture book! Great idea. What does Smurf icecream even taste like and should t it be blue!! I hope you shared a fair bit of your breakfast with that lovely bird! Oo chocolate museum, lovely. Your boat tour looked so peaceful and what views. Hahah thanks for the shout out!! We definitely have to come to Colmar now just for that Christmas shop!! You can’t beat a giant wedge of cheese!! We loved this place and video. Cheers and Happy Nee Year 🍻
Thanks for watching! Your comment got put in the limbo file so I just saw it ;-)
I hope that next Christmas season you get to visit German Christmas Markets again... and can swing by Colmar. It is supposed to be FABULOUS at Christmas, and it's not far from Germany!
Don't you love how we have brainwashed everyone?! Whenever someone sees magenta flowers they think of me, and whenever someone sees a Christmas shop they think of Wills! haha
~Cara 💖
YES! You simply must go! You have family history connections, the food (and wine, allegedly ;-) ) is amazing, and it is gorgeous!!
Loving the look of the almost pizzas, my sort of food 😋
Those tarte flambee or flammekuchen were pizza's French cousin... super thin crust that was as thin as a crepe but much crispier. A great combination. The one we had at the first place was perfection! I've been craving it ever since I started editing that vlog!
Italy, which has the original Venice, has a 'little Venice' town, it's at the other end of the Venice lagoon, the town is called Chioggia and has canals but on a smaller scale to Venice. It's on my list to visit because I'm curious to find an alternative to Venice with a lot less people!
What a great idea! I agree, Venice in the height of summer is such a tourist trap! When I visited there I felt like I was in Disneyland😳
Ian, how could you go around checking out magenta shutters without Dara?! Love the link between Colmar and the US. What a fun fact!
I was surprised to learn the Statue of Liberty connection! It was a fun discovery!
That's so funny! I do the same thing because I know more Spanish than French. But unfortunately I don't know the Spanish word for blueberries! Lol
Bonnie Texan Lass when will you return to England 🏴?
1 May we will be back in person! But my videos will be back next week! 😉 Kent and Sussex road trip!
I'm on a mini ' cruise ' next week to the IOW 😂, just me and my van
I think your cruise to the Isle of Wight will not be as serene and lovely as our boat tour of Colmar ;-)
@@MagentaOtterTravels definitely not, but I will pass an Abbey, a Victorian Chapel and a Castle
@@wencireone that's not bad at all!
Dara, I hope our feathered friend at 8:40 did get some "crumbs".
Probably! But I filmed this so long ago I don't remember! My family loves to feed birds 🩷
Next time. Maybe. 😂
There's nothing like a piece of French cheese so no wonder you bought a wedge the size of a building foundation stone.
Colmar looks like an Alsace gem. Some of it seems very similar to Strasbourg which was the first place we ever visited in France. Brilliant intro to Colmar. Will be very tempting to put on the French bucket list for next time.
I do think Strasbourg is similar to Colmar... but you need to visit both:-)
I can do without trying cannabis gelato, but I should have tasted the unicorn flavour just to report back what it tastes like!
I've been to Venice and not done a gondola ride either! So, you are not alone ;-)
That made me smile... "wedge the size of a building foundation stone"... quite right! Which now makes me want to build a castle out of cheese!!! lol
Thanks for your lovely comment as always, Shane!
Nice relaxing start to 2024. Work shutdown till after this weekend. I hope you two have had a marvelous start to the year too.
@@ShaneNixonFamily that was a funny image! Love your cheese story 🩷. Good luck getting back to work! Hope it's not too jarring 😉
Another great Vlog, Colmar looks like a great place . What happened to Texas
We are still in Texas until the spring. But I have a year and a half worth of fabulous Vlog footage I need to be publishing over the next few months!
I get you now. It's old videos, thanks@@MagentaOtterTravels
@@DHenry-oo7ut yes, I'm afraid I feel like crazy but never have time to edit and publish when we're running around! So that's what I do when I'm sitting at home in Texas all winter... catch up! The places I'm showing have remained largely unchanged for the last four or five centuries, I'm hoping it's OK I'm a year late 🤣
I see you skipped straight passed the cannabis flavour 🤪
Yes I did. Not a fan! That was the worst part about our recent trip to New York City. It was literally everywhere! And I don't mean the ice cream...
@@MagentaOtterTravels yes ! , hard to believe so many people need it for medical reasons 😕
