- Fran has given up shopping and has joined 'Shoppers Anonymous'.
From Season 3 Episode 6, 'Shopaholic'. Val tells Fran that her former fiancee, Danny is getting married. This sends Fran into a shopping frenzy. Whilst on one of her shopping sprees Gracie points out that every time Danny's name is mentioned Fran buys something. Fran's addiction causes her to join 'Shoppers Anonymous'.

Actually shopping addiction is not silly, it can be serious. People rack up huge credit card debts buying things they don’t need… I know both men and women with this problem, surprisingly…. More men than women…

You know in a lot of sitcoms, the scenarios set up here such as Fran acting like a dog with the credit card could come off as really stupid, but the entire cast's timing and delivery sell the humor so well.

@@Steel-101 It’s mostly games, movies, old shows, books, manga, figurines, and music for me.
I literally just bought a turntable and I don’t even have records since my parents got rid of them (to be fair, it was $25 and I know where I can get some; it’s also a Bluetooth speaker and I’ve been wanting one).
I a client of mine is always telling me all these things she is buying. She tried to buy me a winter headband I am like save your money because I will not wear it.

I think she was supposed to be 35-ish. In the episode where Maggie volunteered at the hospital, Fran referenced how she was 30 and the nurse laughed it off because she knew Fran was older than that.

One of my favorite episodes! As silly as they make Fran's addiction out to be, compulsive shopping IS a genuine mental illness. It's called "oniomania" and was recorded as early as the 1890s. There is also evidence that it existed even earlier--Mary Todd Lincoln (the wife of sixteenth U.S. President Abraham Lincoln) was well known for going on manic spending sprees, concealing her purchases, and feeling depressed afterward. I wonder if Fran would be addicted to online shopping if the episode was made today...

Me again! I know people like this! Shopping can be a huge addition and major problem NOT only financially BUT physically weighing a person down!! Simply put, my financial life is changing and I want to completely stop except for rent, utilities, gas, and food and supplements!

It's a bit difficult to imagine Fran ridding herself of her shopping addiction but then the withdrawal symptoms she's experiencing are intense enough and perhaps we could give her the benefit of the doubt.

Well, no, they wouldn’t go through a physiological response to the withdrawal of a substance as depicted. That’s the joke. But sure they might get anxiety and depression from not getting the “high” they feel from the acquisition of a new item. Which quickly fades of course. On to the next. Often the shopping fills a void in their lives, allowing them to not face what is wrong deep down. My husband is addicted to buying stuff from auction websites and places like Kijiji.

It's not their constant dynamic. The dog scene can be offensive, though. Nevertheless, she teaches him a lot throughout the series, there is no obvious asymmetry (in spite of economic one, ofc). There's a lot to be worried about Fran (her obsession with marriage and age, him treating her primarily as a mother for the children etc.), but this is taking an episode out of context. She is not portrayed as a child. Look at the episode when he tries to "form" her into a lady, which could be such a trope, but it's not - he does it at her request, she asks for it because of the children, not him, and quickly recognizes she's better without it. It is actually him who has to grow up and stop repressing his emotions.
@@monikaw9482 No it's her personality in all the episodes. It's very sexist also, she set back feminism 50 years. Throwing herself sexually at him and he would be sued today for sexual harassment since he encourages this behavior.

Anche nell episdodio della vasca, dove era un attimo mandare tutto in vm 18, han giocato con l acqua e schiuma che manco i bambini, tutto perfettamente e coerentemente innocente. Infatti non sono mai andati a letto insieme fino al matrimonio. - a parte quella volta con Fran ubriaca e Max malato - ma non si sa di preciso, loro non ricordano, han lasciato il dubbio per il meme.
