I own a miata I am restoring. I am thinking about getting a z3 you can get a 6 speed 6 cylinder for almost half the asking price if a rusted out miata around here.
Idk if I missed it or not, but when you should the specs, I'd be curious to know the curb weight comparisons. From experience I've noticed that lighter cars tend to feel more nimble, accelerate faster and allow all the go-fast/fun noises to really emanate. I'd wager that BMW has quite a bit more sound deadening(weight) and electronics than the Jap-iata.
I own a Z3 3.0i. Indeed there is a lot of numbness. Stock on stock, the miata is better. Once you start modifying the Z3: sways, suspension, bushings, upgrading steering, its on par with miata in feel.

Which car is cheaper in maintenance and aftermarket parts? I know the miata does have alot of aftermarket support.
Z3s def slept one. They also come i6 e36 engine. M52. Super reliable and capable engine

The z3 is a In-line six
They made both 4 and 6 cyl
Can be slow 4 cyl in Europe
I think the price is cheaper because: what you save on purchase price you will later pay on repairs.

If you are on a budget, miata. Z3 can be fun but you must do your research. Reliability of the Z3 is very good.
Problem is he is using a slower preface lift z3 as a baseline. 2.8L z3 is the ideal track contender
