- Saving My Model Railway from a Dangerous Dog - A Second Hand Bargain - Christmas Layout Update
This week I take a look at the good old N class mogul from Bachmann. I also make my layout slightly more dog-proof.

As always, thanks for watching.
Wow you have a wonderful view from your window, almost as good as your layout, many congratulations it’s fantastic
Thanks Mike - Merry Christmas!
Love the weathering technique of applying dirt then cleaning it with isopropyl alcohol to ‘clean’ it. Gives a very correct way to achieve the used and near end of service look. Well done
Thank you 👍🏻
Living across from a steam railway; I'm jealous! Must be very useful for getting sounds.
Mind you, a family friend lives right by the Dean Forest Railway in Whitecroft. The number of times when my family were down there that I heard a whistle and rushed to the window to look over the fence and see the train pass!
Yep, you have to watch out for the animals! The N Class mogul looks nice too and the layout looks brilliant as always.
Thanks very much Dominic, appreciate it 👍🏻
Blimey, not only having a brill couple of layouts in two houses but also living a stone's throw from the East Lancs Railway with one of them?!? That must've taken some doing to snap up that prime real estate!
Merry Christmas.to you as well. Fantastic priceless view you have from that window. When i was a lad(9 or10yrs) we lived in a section of town where i could view rail traffic every day for about 2 yrs then we moved again😢 the view made interesting due.to truss bridge over river to which we lived next to. Currently i live near a track again but dont see steam or diesel traction used at all, for which i must go to different part in city to view rail traffic of that kind. However when we first moved current city or suberb im now residing, steam excursions.did use the line i mentioned. Lovely days again for a few yrs. Dogs arent that bad at layouts its cats i do not favour at all near a layout they just settle anywhere with that "what ya gonna do about it" glare😂 not that i have a feline
Merry Christmas! Yes you have to make the most of it whilst you have it I guess! That’s true I’ve seen some classic photos of cats sprawled out over layouts 🤣
I must admit, I am quite envious of the view from the window. I'd have a hard time concentrating on the layout, as I'd be forever dashing to the pane to watch the steamers go by.
Merry Christmas from the USA, throughly enjoyed the video!
I have that exact problem! Merry Christmas to you too!
In your archive footage of the Lickey Incline at~2'30" you've got Big Bertha!! Great video!
I think someone is making an OO gauge model of Big Bertha! I remember seeing an engineering sample of it

Hi Lewis
Great video as usual.
Just wanted to say thanks for the great content this year and have a super Christmas and New Year!
Regards
Paul 🎅🏼🍻👍🏼🥳
Thanks Paul! Merry Christmas!
I'm a bit sad that the Nene Valley Railway (my local one) has lost 92 Squadron to the East Lancs Railway, but at least it will get the attention in needs in the not-too-distant future. Best wishes for Christmas, Lewis. Eric.
Me too, I was shocked to hear that 92 Squadron was to leave NVR after nearly 50 years there. I hope that it isn't a sign of Nene Valley Railway struggling because I would love to see that railway pick up.
@@GWRFan281 As you will already know, they put out an appeal to raise £300,000 earlier this year to 'save' the line. I'm not sure how well they have done in that respect but hope and pray that they succeed. I'm not sure if I have previously told you, but I worked for a transport company back in 1979 and my office was in the platform 2 building and actually had a window view onto the platform. Early days then for the NVR, but they were filming 'Secret Army' there at the time. Great memories!
Yes me too. I imagine hiring a loco in for the peak season will work well for the NVR until 73050 is back.
From what some of the BBLS owning society were saying, 92 Squadron moved more so that the ELR can overhaul it much faster when the boiler ticket expires in two years time. Wansford wouldn’t have capacity for a few years with 73050 and the Swedish 4-6-0 in after that I believe.
The Bachmann N Class is a very good model for its age, a new up to date model would be nice though!
I agree - or even a U class as the preserved one seems popular!
Nice to hear you Lewis, and what a view from your window toward the train line! That was great. Oh, and the loco is also a brilliant work and looks amazing on the layout, hopefully safe from the occasional canine conventions.
Thanks Anthony - Merry Christmas to you!
When I had my cocker spaniel the tail was docked. Almost immediately after birth. That became illegal. But it would have saved your layout. Happy Christmas Lewis.
That’s true! Happy new year to you!
I've got a Merlin, too, albeit a Border Collie. His tail is a weapon of mass destruction but fortunately the layout was deliberately built out of canine reach. I had to change my construction plan, however, as the foam board base didn't have enough inertia when the layout legs were whacked by dog rumps. Chipboard usefully gave it more mass, they don't teach you this stuff in magazines!
Thats very true, layout pet protection should be an important consideration!
Water colour paints with a hint of liquid washing up liquid works well for weathering.
I’ll give that a go 👍🏻
Lovely job on the N, I have one from same era, runs well and looks good.
Thank you 👍🏻
Well thank you. For making all these small films for us to watch all year. Have a good one and keep up the good work Lewis. All the best from Yorkshire for Christmas.
Thanks very much! Same to you 👍🏻
Hi Lewis, what a super new addition to the layout. The "N" Class was Bachmann's first model under the "Blue Ribbon" brand. They had a length of cord with a seal attached on the loco front originally, and were also the first locos without the split chassis. As you said, they were real game changers, running and detail wise. I had one but didn't really use it enough back then. Your archive film was a joy to watch, I really find the colour archive film most inspirational. Really really lovely to see the layout. Merry Christmas, all the best Dave.
It’s recorded that a runaway loose-coupled goods train descending the Lickey just could not be held back. The number of wagons pinned down wasn’t enough, the goods guard had screwed down his van’s brake as hard as possible, the loco steam brake was causing the grime on the brake blocks to burn off in flames and the tender hand brake was on too.
The driver came to the conclusion that there was nothing else to be done but light a cigarette and read his newspaper… which, to the amazement of his fireman, is what he did
Ha brave man! Crazy that someone would have to put all those breaks on and off by hand.
@ Goods Guards were among the most skilful railwaymen. Failing to pin down enough wagons could and did result in injuries and deaths of course. As you’ll appreciate they had to know the road as well as their drivers. A bad snatch would send them flying across the brake van, breaking bones in crunching impacts on the back wall or brake wheel. Good job for an intelligent man who enjoyed the combination of teamwork and solitude which the role demanded. Salute to them all🫡
Nice bit of weathering, looking good 👍🏼. What a dream living by East Lancs Railway visited it this year in the spring and hopefully next spring when holiday in Yorkshire. Keep up the good work, and I enjoy your videos and reels on insta. Both layouts are amazing. Cheers John
Thanks very much John, appreciate it 👍🏻
May i congratulate you on a superb layout.
Incredibly impressive.
Thanks very much!
Merry Christmas to you and enjoyed watching the trains running, what a view from your window, wow.
Thank you - Merry Christmas! 😀
Hi from Glasgow Lewis and Happy Christmas to you great video again from you young man
Thanks Cameron, you as well!
Happy Christmas, Lewis. These two locos are weathered are both nice and dodgy. I'm glad when you were using varnish you opened a window. Would not want to see you end up in an A&E with breathing issues. Years ago when I had a model railway we had a cat who would jump up on the layout. Would bat down trees and curl up and sleep in the lake. Bill and Janet from California
Thanks guys, really appreciate it. Happy holidays to you both.
What a great film , Lewis .Thank you so much for posting. Happy Christmas to you. Cheers from Germany , Andy ...
Thanks Andy! Happy Christmas!
What a delightful slice of life video. Happy Christmas to you from snowy Ottawa. Your view is to die for and your model railroading companion is lovely. One of my dogs likes to sleep under my layout.
Thank you, happy Christmas to you too!
Enjoy watching your railway and have a good Christmas
Thanks, you too!
Great upate Lewis!! Nice dog!!! Merry Christmas and a good and healthy 2025 for you and your loved ones! Cheers Onno.
Thank you - Merry Christmas to you too!
Nice work on this lovely kettle. Of course I have the same, it's a Moguuuuuuuuuuuuuuul ! (SR green for me) and it is a good runner, nice for her age.
About pets and layouts, I have no idea about dogs, but cats tends to sit anywhere they want to. including on your tracks. Sometimes, they tend to thing an engine going out of a tunnel is a mouse, and they knock it out of the tracks. I might do someday some experiments with N scale trains and the cats of a friend, just to see what they are doing.
Thanks Olivier! That’s true, cats are a law unto themselves!
Interesting the way you weather your loco's. i may have to give that a go on some of my fleet. Many thanks for sharing layout with us. merry Christmas and all the best Tony.
No problem 👍 Merry Christmas!
Thanks for the entertainment this year, and the learning bits. MERRY CHRISTMAS 🎄🎁🎄🎁🎄
Thanks Rob - Merry Christmas!
Looking good mate. Nice job on the weathering and the crew.
Thank you 👍🏻
Merry Christmas Lewis, thanks for all your great videos during 2024. Hope 2025 is an even better year, Cheers Greg
Thanks Greg, appraciate it - same to you!
Bonjour Lewis, Lovely engine that N2 Mogul. Nicely weathered ! Rolly seems to enjoy your layout too - no wonder the little people fly off - as they must be scared !! Have a Merry peaceful Christmas and a Happy New Year ! All the best, Filip
Thank you Filip - Merry Christmas to you too!
Merry Christmas to you too!
Same to you!
Gorgeous loco and the weathering looks perfect lewis. Great veiw, ATB and Merry Christmas, Stuart
Thank you Stuart, you as well! 👍🏻
Happy Christmas, Lewis and thank you for sharing. 😊
Thank you - Same to you!
Merry Christmas & a Happy New Year, Lewis. Thanks for sharing your wonderful layouts & skills with us during 2024. Looking forward to enjoying more superb content in 2025.
Jenny Kirk sang the praises of that Bachmann loco earlier in the year, as most people assume it's a split chassis model, hence it's cheap price. But as you've found out, it's a real bargain.
Thanks very much Stephen, same to you 👍🏻 Yes I saw that video after I’d order it - very useful as I was really confused over whether it would be S/C or not! All the best to you.
What a great film.Thank you so much for posting. Happy Christmas to you.
Thank you! Same to you!
Hi Lewis what Bargen and runs real sweet by the looks of it your weathering has done treat it really dose look good just like the rest of your locos and rolling stock. thank you for your hard work putting these videos together for us we really do appreciate it. Thank you, and very Merry Christmas and happy new year. { if its possible with this lot running the country ] well done Lewis.
Thanks Tony, really appreciate it - merry Christmas to you as well!
Nice job on the weathering plus the dog is a saint compared to my cat and my layout is not on the floor. My dog has a curly tail that only extends about 8 inches or about 20 cm so no problem. Great update and Merry Christmas to you and your loved ones, Jersey Bill
Thanks Bill - I can imagine, Cats are a law until themselves!
Thanks for the video. Most enjoyable. Merry Christmas.
Thanks Ralph! Merry Christmas
Thanks for that Lewis ,very interesting on what you did to your loco .It looks a nice little runner & look forward to seeing it running in future programs .Hope you had a good Christmas & will have a happy NewYear .😊
Thanks Steve - happy new year to you!
Hi Lewis, I love your weathering ability, it always looks so good. Merry Christmas and a great new year.
Thanks Barry - Merry Christmas!
Thank you for a year of wonderful videos
Glad you’ve enjoyed them! Merry Christmas!
Beautiful dog have a lovely Christmas 👍
Thank you! You too!
Interesting video as usual. Thank you. Compliements of the Season to you.
Thanks, you too!
Great review. Seeing a Southern on the ELR, and an N class, I used to have 3 N class. I used to have a Cocker Spaniel too❤
Thank you - Merry Christmas!
Great Video again ,merry Christmas Lewis and all the best for 2025.
Thanks Brian, you as well!
Good update Lewis, cheers. Hope you have a good Christmas break mate. Cheers 🥂
Thank you, you as well 😀
@MouldyRaspberry I'll definitely make my goal to try to practice loco weathering next year, makes such a difference.
Nice job Mr M. Happy Christmas to you and Mr Doggie.😊
Thanks John - you as well 😬
Wonderful video as always.... thanks and merry Christmas 🎄🎁
Thank you - Merry Christmas!
Wishing you and yours a peaceful Christmas, Lewis. Don't comment much these days, not a lover of running sessions. Get building, m'boy. Henry.
Thank you Henry - Merry Christmas to you too!
another beautiful video Lewis ! Have a great Christmas , best wishes from pembrokeshire !
Thank you - Merry Christmas to you too!
I bought a similar N class, similarly surprised. Lovely model.
Yes I agree 👍🏻 Merry Christmas Al!
@@MouldyRaspberry Merry Christmas to you and yours.
All the best for the New Year.
One other thing I do like about this 'N', is it's one of the Bachmann models with 'working valvegear', which looks fantastic. (I thought Hornby might have had a go on the P2 !!!!)
Very nice Lewis, Merry Christmas to you.
Thank you - you as well!
Compliments of the Season (Ticket) 🌟
Thank! You as well.
@@MouldyRaspberry Ever thought about undertaking locomotive weathering on commission? 😉
Excellent weathering and looks great. What a fantastic view of the railway from your house. I live in Bacup so not that far from the East Lancs. Thanks again and Merry Christmas. 🎄
Thanks very much! You’re only up the road from me then!
There's a series of videos Lewis called Decades of Steam on all the big four railways from the 1920's through to the 1960's. In the 1930's is some superb colour footage of the GWR and one shot of the LMS showing a blue streamlined coronation on a motley set of 15 red coaches so it must have been a test train for the Coronation Scot was only nine coaches. Vivian Ellis who wrote the well known piece of music said the music wasn't about a journey from London to Scotland but about a journey from London to Taunton to his Somerset country cottage so it would have been via the GWR NOT LMS. But everyone associates that train with that piece of music. The Coronation Scot train only ran from 1937-1939 and Ellis didn't write the music until 1946.
Yes Bachmann engines of that era are good as I have that southern N class loco too. The N class moguls were maids of all work on the southern so passenger, goods and pick ups. It will be nice to see you giving the N class a good thrashing around the loft layout. Don't forget your whip.
In the 1980's City of Wells did a pacing run with class 33 diesel from Salisbury to Yeoval and overtook the class 33 which was running at it's maximum speed of 85mph. In those days preserved steam on the mainline was forbidden to go over 60mph and preserved diesels were outright banned altogether. I've got the footage of 34092 doing it. It was known to line side photographers as the "volcano" mainly because like all Bullieds on starting it slipped badly blasting black smoke skywards. On Misselthwaite you could have your Bullied (if you still have it) on a one coach train. The Southern built 140 of them and than had to find trains for the locos to pull which resulted in them working one coach trains in the west country simply to give them something to do. The Salisbury steam runs also had 4498 Sir Nigel Gresley, 6998 Burton Agnes Hall, LMS 8F 48151 and the aforementioned 34092.
A merry Christmas and a happy new year to you Lewis.
Thanks Roy - Merry Christmas to you as well. Yes that’s a good point, I remember seeing some photos of Bullieds on one coach trains in the West Country and thinking how strange they looked! I bet they ran to time though!
@@MouldyRaspberry When the light Bullied Fighter Command was fitted with a Giesel Ejector it made the loco as strong as a Merchant Navy. BR only fitted it to that Bullied and 9F 92250 after the Talyllyn Railway fitted No.4 Edward Thomas and questions were asked in the house of commons as to BR fuel efficiency policy.
But the tests with the 9F proved a failure as BR tried to see if the same fuel efficiency results could be had burning much lower grades of coal whereas the ejector required good grades of coal to achieve improved running.
great layout update keep up the great vid and work on layout merry christmas to you and keep up vid you do on channel
Thank you - Merry Christmas to you too!
Great video mate. I've said before and I will again your a ture artist my friend
Thanks matey!
Happy Christmas Mouldy
Thanks Ross - you too!
And a very Merry Christmas to you to. Have a great New Year also and see you in 2025
Merry Christmas to you too!
Merry Christmas!
Happy New Year 2025!
Great video!
Merry Christmas to you too!
I have a strange example of a Bachmann 8750 Pannier that's really an updated Mainline tooling. It has a can motor, which i believe the earlier examples came with pancake motors, pretty good molded detail and sprung buffers.
The only thing that lets it down is a lack of proper bearings on the wheelset, so it runs like a dog. Still like it over all though. Some of these older models are certainly serviceable as entry level models like yours
Yes I agree 👍🏻 I’ve got one of those older Bachmann Pannier tanks as well, it’s noisy but runs well. I saw they’re still releasing some in new liveries to try and complete with the new Accurascale one.
@@MouldyRaspberry the first thing I thought of was they better not be trying to throw that tooling in this market with far superior models up and coming. I have two of the Accurascale panniers preordered, because I couldn't resist the livelries
Nice bit of weathering, on both locos. Have a great Christmas and New Year.
If you haven't already, check out Boomer Diorama - his cat Dusty virtually lives on the layout! ;-) Cheers
Thank you - Merry Christmas to you! I’ll have a look 🤣
M. Night shyamalan twist, it's a floor layout.
Ha 😉
Merry Xmas & Happy New Year, but alas still no catering stock lol
Thanks, you as well! No still packed lunches in these parts for the time being.
Do you have any tips on how to weather a loco when you have anxiety about ruining it or doing to much?
As I would love to weather my locos but I am just scared to do so.
What about buying a cheap/non running loco second hand and testing out some techniques on it?
I have bought a old Lima 33 a year ago as a non runner but after testing it it runs
And have tried on that but the only thing I have done is weather my own wagons but still scared to do my actual locos
Great update 👍 Merry Christmas 🎉
Thank you - Merry Christmas to you too!
OK, Lewis, your real world shots are no more realistic than your layout shots! Other than the smoking locos, there were a few seconds where I wasn't sure whether I was viewing reality or miniature worlds!
To you and your viewers, whatever year end holidays you may celebrate, may they be happy and in the company of friends and family!
Thanks Steve 😀 Happy holidays to you as well!
I dont know who built the layout 92 Squadron was on, but its not as realistic as yours ! 😊
Ha thanks 🤣 Merry Christmas!

@MouldyRaspberry Cheers. Lewis. Thanks for the entertainment over the years. Wishing you and yours the very best. Regards. Steve
Personally, I never like the N class as a Scott I don’t like the Southern Railway. I don’t really like the designs and one of my least favourites are the Ns, still it looks like it’s a good model. And it’s not like I hate them. I just don’t like them.
I get that, they’re an unusual looking design for sure.
