    1080p60fps, Post-Commentary
    No Upgrades, No Skilling, No Weapon, Gear or Gang Unlocks
    (Except for forced/mandatory/progression-locking unlocks.)
    All Main Memories cleared under most challenging conditions, with the weakest Frye Twins possible.
    This is the updated, 2020 version of the No Upgrades playthrough for Assassin's Creed Syndicate. This deprecates and makes obsolete the previous version of the run, which has since been Unlisted and removed from public access.
    Thank you so much to all who waited patiently for this, and to the people who requested an updated version of this run, I appreciate your support.

    I love how you explain everything that happens.
    a) You do it in a concise way while still sprinkling in fun facts/trivia.
    b) You explain things so that new players can keep up with the commentary.
    I didn't think of it until now, but this commentary is why I subscribed in the first place.

      @@LeoKRogue I am watching this video over the course of my own playthrough of Syndicate, so I only see about 20 minutes at a time.
      Your comment about carriages being "Unassassin" was actually profound for me.
      I personally love the carriages. They add a new option for travel and can make for a dynamic combat setting. Fighting on top of a carriage while fending of two police carts, a blighter-mobile, and having some Rooks straggle behind feels fun. And, as you said yourself, Syndicate still has decent parkour mechanics. This proves that having the "player as the vehicle" is still possible even with the addition of additional modes of transportation.
      I agree with what you said about Origins and Odyssey though. Those games didn't make parkour the main mode of transportation, and thus lost much of the Assassin's Creed vibe.
      I'm curious though, what would you have done to help the player travel long distances in these games? Should we still have ships and horses? Black Flags relied on ships after all, and is considered one of the best games in the series.

    Assassin's Creed Syndicate begins stat-checking more player-actions than even Unity did, which for me marks the beginning of the sharp downward curve into RPG-Land and the Assassin's Creed games beginning to say "No" to player-expression and creativity in favor of hard checks against numerical values. As such, while Syndicate with Upgrades is an easier game than Unity in every way, Syndicate with No Upgrades is actually significantly harder, with the final boss outright being random; hence why I can't do him in a single-segment.
    Many of the game's fundamentals and much of the "meta" is the same as Unity because the two games are very similar. If you can play Unity, you can play Syndicate, and vice versa. There's a lot of skill-transfer. Thank you for watching, or listening. I know many players put my videos in the background as "podcast-noise" while doing chores/studying etc. I hope you all enjoy.

    what I like the most about these vids is how you do some missions or segments creatively. maybe I'm too simple minded to think of these options or something, but I would never think about, for example, leaving one enemy alive to them use him as a mobile blend circle ti avoid detection. also the way you comment on it so calmly makes it seem like you didn't even break a sweat during the playthrough, which adds another level of being cool.

    • @LeoKRogue
      @LeoKRogue  4 года назад +9

      Thanks for the comment Kortex. Playing a game under conditions that make success less likely than usual kind of forces you to think about the mechanics at your disposal, or it gets even tougher. Of course, I'm not perfect and I missed some interesting opportunities myself, but I'm just happy to finish it.
      As for my calm approach to commentary, that's very much become my signature and I'm excited to keep making playthroughs of that nature. A major inspiration for that is CarcinogenSDA's Resident Evil 2 commented walkthroughs, if you want to check them out.

This, as opposed to the hectic nature of my gameplay, since I fail at being stealthy half the time, gets me nervously seek a way out of trouble. Everybody fails. What I want to do is show ways out of those failures. My thing with this game is, where Unity failed, this one overcorrected.
    I love it, don't get me wrong, but the combat felt visceral (though slow, boring and flawed) in Unity. Here it's cartoony, too fast but still boring and disinteresting.
    Still love the setting and the characters, but again, where Unity took itself too seriously at times, Syndicate is the opposite, especially with Jacob.
    Still love both games though.

    • @LeoKRogue
      @LeoKRogue  4 года назад +36

      You hit the nail on the head exactly. I didn't want either extreme, I wanted something in the middle which would have frankly been borderline Perfect. On principle I dislike the way combat feels in both games, Syndicate just gets a pass because it wastes less of my time and I can "sleep" through it more so it's ultimately more easily-discarded. Combat in Syndicate's worst offense is that it legitimately doesn't function adequately without HUD, whereas Unity is hackable to strip away *ALL* UI elements and is *STILL* very Playable that way. That, if nothing else in Unity, deserves IMMENSE praise and respect.

    Watching this is just pure awe. The amount of skill it takes for you to play through the whole game with zero upgrades (other than a few forced ones :/) is just amazing. I can see you’ve played stealth reaper and ghost for years through all the assassin’s creeds. I have extreme respect for the amount of hours you’ve put in to these games to be this good. And I must say, the optional objectives were such a pain in my ass to complete for when I was 100% the game. Like the “Don’t kill the pharmacist” one, took me 5 reloads to actually get him to show the steal option. Just a waste of time. Same with a lot of the optional objectives sadly :(

      I really, really appreciate that. This comment came to me at pretty much the perfect time, when I needed it most, and I'm incredibly grateful for that. The optional objectives in this game definitely rank among some of the worst in the series, I feel. Sometimes they're almost AC3-bad, and I completely ignore them on repeat playthroughs since it's just not worth dealing with them. The extra money you get for finishing them was a cool idea, at least.

    You said you find Jacob rather unlikable (save for the start of the game where he is pretty funny and cheeky). I felt the same. His character grew staler for me as the game went on, lost that spark. Same thing happened with Arno for me, at the start of Unity I thought he'd be a really fun character, quirky as he was and quite witty and charming. Remember when he bid good day to those police officers and jumped out a fucking window? Or when he was sneaking into Elise's ball and told that guy, no, in fact, he would rather not come down. Then as soon as the hood came on...poof there goes all personality :( I get it tho. He lost a lot, and I think the Devs admitted they had to rush the story-line a bit or whatever. Anyway thoughts on Evie? I feel like she was just made to be the "complete opposite" of Jacob and that didn't really work out for her imo. I liked her more tho.

    • @LeoKRogue
      @LeoKRogue  4 года назад +16

      Syndicate's characters definitely needed more development attention and a sharpening of focus as to who they are. The issue with them for me is that in the moments they are unlikable, you can tell that's not how they were intended to be. A character doesn't have to be likable if they are unlikable on purpose. Great example: AC1 Altair. The guy is a complete asshole for most of the game. He is my FAVORITE character of all time. We're not MEANT to like him, and that premise is executed on perfectly until his Awareness grows and he gains insight. As contrast, Jacob and Evie are clearly designed with the intent to be charming to the player. Much of the time this works well enough but seldom ever Wows us or has us feel any Vitality. Contrast also against DMCV's three heroes. Each is absurd, over the top and completely unchained and they're all very easy to love for one reason or another.
      I like Evie much more for what she represents, even if her execution is also lacking in that Assassin's Creed essence at times.

You said that district clearing is mandatory and thats another bad thing for me because I like my open world alive and populated by enemy faction. (I dont do those social club missions in unity because they remove red guys from the map, same thing with borgia towers)
    I like your playthrough especially because your decision making (in parkour, or which guys to kill, which guys to bypass) is similar to what I would have done had I play it myself. So.. you know, kinda feel like playing it without playing it :p

    That discourse on Head-up display, on the expectation of developers and also by players of playing with HUD or nothing and on design that should allow to play as you want is super well explained and I wish you just posted a video on this... I just love it. Games that made this seriously like Hellblade Senua Sacrifice, Dead Space, but so.. few.. others too... should be examples for designers,
    damn I can't comment anymore.. how good this talk is. around 2:30 and beyond. Just great. I wish you could talk more of this. I would love to share these videos focused on how sloppy can be design reducing the immersion.
    Sincerely, let's be clear, honestly: I have opened Unity and I had HUD on, I could not understand how (and it happens with the vast majority) people can play a game with so much stuff on screen. It's just madness. It's pain for the eyes not only for the sould and the gameplay.
    Wow ..fast forwarded the video andnoticed u can loot the equipment to dress later: it's such a good thing to have a simulated collection of clothes instead of sci fi stuff "because it's an abstergo virtual reality" of watching someone and dressing like them, but it's something I probably care for as I am more of a historical or context related immersion dependent player not really how the canon is treated by the designers which often I try to enhance in games with a story like this... ... I have this game for free, like Unity, but if you say it's not really playable and it's a bit inferior in quality I confirm I won't play it also becasue I need time to play games...
    Very fluid and smooth gameplay from you I need to watch all the other videos on Unity from you damn.. how many u made!

      I love diegesis, or an effort to reduce out-of-world UI elements in games. I recognize not every game or genre is suited to that, but for the ones that it can be done in, I always love to see it.

      @@LeoKRogue Exactly. Probably games that are not made to be HUD less or not enough diegetical, maybe they should just be Books or movies, or just wait future AI or other design devices development before being made. Stuff like a mod (now apparently not working anymore the modder herself says) for RDR2 making chariots or other props that have been damaged or destroyed or even horses killed or humans slowly decaying for days in a location is a truly amazing thing, that makes also returning to a place (an actually true discipline of game design and over which some games are designed from Resident Evil to others too) a very story telling and truly emotion triggering experience.

      Starting out, lower your sensitivity on your right stick by one notch and see how that feels. In options menus, this is usually "Camera/Aim Sensitivity." Continue going back and forth between the options menu and real gameplay until your controls feel better in your hand. Then play with that.

    • @LeoKRogue
      @LeoKRogue  4 года назад

      After a while, you should increase it again after you learn to control your joystick, yes. Ultimately, higher sensitivity is "objectively better," because it allows you to look around much faster and finish actions quicker. However, if you cannot benefit from that increased sensitivity because you can't control it well enough, then it won't be useful to you at all. That's why we start out learning on lower sensitivity, and increase it over time.

    At around the 6-7 minute mark, you talked about the setpieces. Generally, I'm not a massive fan of heavily scripted sequences (my favorite genre being immersive sim games like Dishonored and Deus Ex), so the initial change to a more open format with Origins and Odyssey got me very excited. I think honestly where those 2 games failed is not in the gameplay; I actually really enjoyed Odyssey's stealth, despite the parkour being a little less in depth than I hoped. I think where they really screwed up was the world design, specifically with odyssey. 2-3 years was clearly not enough time, since after getting off the first island (Kephallonia, I think) the world devolves into the exact same copy-pasted fortresses and encampments. My favorite moments of Odyssey (non-story related) were always my first times trying one of these preset locales. From there it just got worse, and worse, and worse.
    I would be perfectly fine if the kept with the same basic model of gameplay for their next AC game (which I think they will, considering the success of the previous 2). Hopefully they take more time to craft the world, since based on both of our first experiences on Kephallonia when they do take that time this formula can work (since you seemed pretty damn hyped early on into the game).

    • @LeoKRogue
      @LeoKRogue  4 года назад +1

      I can kind of see that, yeah. I have a few thoughts of my own. Immersive sims are my favorite genre as well, so I think I'll be able to say something smart. :P
      First, to get the short bit out of the way, setpieces used sparingly are critical for providing palate-cleansers. Even a game as player-paced and player-directed as Resident Evil 2 Remake has several "key moments" wherein a narrative event occurs and the player has to respond. A lot of player-directed games contain such moments, and they don't do anything to take away from the player's agency because we're armed with a lot of potential actions we can still take inside of those scenarios. Of course, if the game was full of ONLY those, or if it lacked them completely, it'd suffer equally from both approaches - and that's kind of what's started happening with Assassin's Creed, but it's not merely because of the lack of 'personality' across the length of the campaign, it's because the verbsets we're limited to are very shallow and grow tired incredibly quickly.
      I was also really excited about the more player-directed format of Origins and Odyssey, because I love Dishonored, Metal Gear Solid V and Breath of the Wild, but both recent Assassin's Creed games failed so horrifically to capture what makes this kind of game style and genre so amazing. No amount of world design or more "fresh" locations would have made it better. Look no further than Metal Gear Solid V, which takes place in a desert with cookie-cutter copypaste bases which all play largely the same if you want them to, but outright CRUSH Assassin's Creed because the Systemic/Emergent gameplay is *so strong* that it doesn't *matter* that it's all the same.
      Timestamp: ruclips.net/video/sZRUdlWZz_o/видео.html
      Immersive sims are *DEFINED* by emergent gameplay, completely. Also by smaller, denser worlds filled with environmental storytelling, but this isn't something that's available to Assassin's Creed, and not a direction that Ubisoft will likely move into. In light of that, let's say it's not the world that needs changing; it's the depth of the mechanics themselves. Changing the world will give us a SMALL boost to quality for a MASSIVE resource and time-cost, something very unattractive to Ubisoft's dev-style. Evolving the verbs available to us will provide us with significantly more interesting possibilities without actually needing to change the way they build their locations too much.
      And let's be really, really honest with each other. They're *not* going to change their world-design. They're also not going to make the games any smaller than they are now. Both of those things are bullets to the head for Assassin's Creed in its current incarnation, if our verbsets remain so surface, so what-you-see-is-what-you-get. We need stronger systemic gameplay or we're just doomed. Kephallonia cannot really be considered a success or failure either way because, well, it's the beginning of the game. We don't KNOW anything yet, we haven't seen anything. They could have given us *any* location as our First location and we would've loved it, because it's the First location and we haven't gotten a chance for anything to get stale. You feel me?

  • @thedestoryer21
    @thedestoryer21 3 года назад

    I like setpieces when they add extra real challenge (or just actually change something) instead of just being a coat of paint.

    • @LeoKRogue
      @LeoKRogue  3 года назад +1

      I think there's merit to both kinds. I mean, consider a game like AC Odyssey for example, where every quest is either:
      - Get in a place, kill a guy
      - Get on a huge battlefield, kill a guy (or lots of guys)
      - Steal a thing from a place
      Since every quest is literally just that x 999999, _even_ a 'coat of paint' setpiece would go a _long_ way toward providing some kind of pace-breaker to liven up the monotony. In shorter games whose core gameplay is solid enough to be played for hours and hours, setpieces are less useful.

Plus I rarely entered combat (as far as I remember). You are right about the little response time you have, but when I did the arena fights those started to get really hard without hud so I learned the ai's fighting patterns and started to predict their actions. Its actualy not that hard, and since you put lots of hours into this games and love challenges anyways, might as well try sometime! It feels pretty badass when mastered and looks so much cooler. Honestly, combat in both Unity *and* Syndicate is something I don't pay much attention to. Lots of great combat systems out there, ACU/ACS are merely there to provide some method of engagement against enemies who've seen the player. Thanks again!

    Is the parkour in Syndicate less ״artsy” then Unity? Which has the more fluent parkour system? And which is more intuitive?
    Thanks

    • @LeoKRogue
      @LeoKRogue  Год назад

      The parkour in Syndicate is very limited compared to parkour in Unity.
      Syndicate does not let you manual-jump, Unity does.
      Syndicate will not let you jump off anything that might hurt you or kill you, Unity does. You can detach from a rope-launcher zipline to still do this, but you can't do it off building-edges.
      These two things significantly impact what you can do with movement, and lead to the player feeling "glued" to walls or floor all the time. If you're already used to moving around in Unity, you will feel like your character is missing some useful moves that you wish you still had in Syndicate.
      If you find Unity movement difficult or accidentally kill Arno a lot of the time while moving, then Syndicate is a very good "intro" game to Unity's movement system since you're basically not allowed to fail, you can't really make any mistakes or mess up in any way, the game makes it impossible.
      Which is more intuitive depends on you, and what kind of player you are. Some players really like the improved freedom of Unity, that you're allowed to throw yourself off a building. Some people prefer the "safer" constraint of Syndicate where as long as you don't try to do any risky action, the game feels pretty smooth and doesn't let you hurt yourself.

    Hey again man, just wanted to ask here, at 2:45:00 or so, you try to stealth kill the brute but fail. Then you mentioned that in the other AC games it would’ve been an easy kill, why is that and why does it make the stealth in Unity and Syndicate bad for you? Imo it seemed realistic that he noticed you because he was looking your way but I obviously don’t understand the game like you do so I’m sure you were correct in whatever you meant, I’d just like to understand :)

    • @LeoKRogue

      This is quite involved, actually and has to do with two "pieces," Fairness and Fantasy.
      1. He wasn't facing me, at all at the time I chose to move in. I picked the right moment to approach and he _decided_ to look at me out of the corner of his eye _right_ at the very end. I was essentially punished for playing correctly.
      2. Even in MORE 'hardcore' stealth games (AC is pretty casual) like the newer Metal Gear Solids, Thief or Dishonored, guards simply don't have that level of peripheral vision, that's ridiculous. And those are 'realistic' games, whereas Assassin's Creed is a power-fantasy, it's always been slightly exaggerated and in the player's favor. The Assassin's power is the ability to approach quickly and fluidly, and take the life of anyone they want. The game robbed me of this.
      3. In most stealth games (INCLUDING older Assassin's Creeds!) you have a "grace period" during which you can still Assassinate or Knock Out an enemy in the moment of "shock" as he's still detecting you. Syndicate and Unity _FORCE_ the player to begin punching/slashing the enemy in that moment instead of permitting a 'clutch' kill like MGSV/Dishonored/classic AC would. It feels unfair from the player's perspective and once again runs contrary to the "feel" of being an Assassin.
      Thanks for the comment!

      It's got its upsides, especially compared to what passes as Assassin's Creed nowadays (RIP T__T) but it is indeed just... Like that. Syndicate is generally seen as a game that isn't particularly horrible in any way, while also not being very special. It results in an experience that just kind of blurs together. I sorely miss the concept for Assassin's Creed Victory, which was much darker and gloomier.

    What do you think about the parkour experience in syndicate neglecting the rope launcher? The parkour is same in both syndicate and unity, same animations but more in unity, but for some reason for me syndicate parkour feels smoother and grounded while unity feels stiff and floaty.

    • @LeoKRogue

      Syndicate disallows Unsafe Jumps and Manual Jumps completely, which means movement is functionally nerfed in Syndicate. However, yes, what does exist is much smoother than in Unity. Each game has moments in which I prefer one system over the other. Overall I've come to appreciate Unity's more because the kind of player I am means I appreciate having access to more verbs during gameplay. I actually used to love Syndicate's way more and it wasn't even a contest back when I played on console because it was much more reliable than Unity for me. I hope that helps!

  • @incrediblecaptain

    So HUD shouldn’t be necessary, I agree. But I’ve actually had fun with no HUD on this game.
    I prefer the idea of Assassins needing to either be stealthy or attack very aggressively at the outset. No HUD, makes combat encounters really hard. You need to burn through ammunition to handle swarms of enemies.

    • @LeoKRogue
      @LeoKRogue  Год назад

      IMO it makes combat "hard" because it's not designed to be played that way -- missing frames on animations, etc.

      @@LeoKRogue it’s absolutely unfair without HUD. And of course the enemies should have the proper tells. All the other AC games have combat the work without HUD.
      But for the simple fact that it makes combat feel like a risky last resort, I like it. In spite of the obvious flaws.
      In most other AC games you’re capable of so much in combat, even without HUD, that stealth is something you rarely need to do.
      Unity has the best balance. Stealth is your go to move, and combat feels like risky backup plan for the most part. And still works without HUD.

  • @circa81
    @circa81 3 года назад

    You say here that without the HUD, playing this game, in terms of being alerted to enemies spotting you, is impossible. • @LeoKRogue
      @LeoKRogue  3 года назад

      That's right. If you pay attention, enemy attacks in Syndicate have almost no windup, they just hit you instantly. With HUD On, their indicator begins flashing for a second before they attack and that's what the designers want you to react to.
      In Arkham and many other AC games you can remove HUD and counter enemies just by looking at their actual bodies. In this game that's a guessing game.
      The most you get is one guard walking closer to you than usual, but even that's not foolproof since it could be anything.
