Irresponsible? Not really, it’s more responsible to give up an animal if you can’t feed your own children. Prices for food are outrageous, that’s what you should be upset about. You know, the root of the problem.

I know for a fact these so-called shelters _never_ fully disclose where all their money goes. They will not even dare tell you what happens to an animal. Yet, they want people to blindly give them money! ASIDE: I do not know of one, even the humane societies, that does not use propaganda, telling people how they "rescue" animals and get them adopted, and in reality they kill way, way more than they ever adopt out. But, they have no problem accepting donations from the propaganda.
Anyone that wants to give money, volunteer, etc., find a true no-kill shelter!

Yeah, though idk the stories of the people who had to give up their pets and wouldn’t be so quick to judge personally. Many people who felt secure enough to own a pet have lost their job or home and could not get another in time, so they chose to give up their pets, a difficult decision.
Meanwhile, I’ve seen homeless people with pets that are clearly underfed, bones poking out and on death’s door.
I think I’d rather have people not keep pets they can no longer care for rather than keep them. People sadly can’t see into the future, so they can’t have known that their finances would go under.

Do you realize how hard some of these adoption/ rescues make it to adopt?
There’s no being on this earth that I love more than dogs and my son.
And I’m with you on adopting.
Here’s the problem with some of these rescue groups.
They are spaying and neutering before the dogs are skeletally sound.
They should not be doing that do any companion animal at 6-8 weeks old.
      Ever.
That can cause severe deformities and bone issues/ cancers down the road.
In the adoption fee they just need to add a couple hundred dollars refundable when the adopter shows proof that the dog or cat has been fixed.
I have had dogs since I was very young. Multiples.
I put their needs way before anything else.
      Including my own needs.
They all have Trupanion health insurance.
We use a huge veterinary hospital with excellent staff.
Take them to the vet for any little issues.
I check them head to toe for ticks, lumps and bumps.
I brush their teeth and cook for them.
I volunteer at a rescue that houses unadoptable dogs because of aggression.
We own our home with a fenced in yard.
And I was turned down by multiple rescues??
My dogs have lived long long lives.
So how was I turned down.
Of course I was also approved immediately by a lot .
But once again the dog I wanted was neutered at 6 weeks old.

So simplistic and not addressing the issues. Inflation is real...the costs associated with responsible pet ownership has more than doubled over the past 4 years. I just paid $350 for a wellness check of two pups. The diagnostics and treatment were one vaccination and fecal exam (which was clear) for each of the pups. Imagine how much it would cost to diagnose and treat a sick or injured pet? Then the price of dog food has almost doubled over the past four years. So too has flea, tick, and heartworm preventatives. These companies are pricing themselves out of customers...but sadly pets are paying the ultimate price. There are people who simply cannot afford these costs anymore...the responsible thing to do is rehome or surrender. Don't neglect or dump a pet.

@@FVWhimsy2010 I completely agree about the cost of vet bills, but they've been high for many years. In 2007 I spent $29,000.00 on my two cats Cloudy and Cleo. Cleo needed two surgeries, but unfortunately passed away and Cloudy had cancer and was getting chemo (I'll never do that again, it was cruel). I did everything to make sure they got the care they deserved. Pet care is a billion-dollar industry, and pets are dying, abandoned and surrendered because vets and pet care (food, medications, etc.) it's the money that counts, not the animals.
But I also believe that a lot of pet owners have absolutely no problem buying a new iPhone every year, taking trips they cannot afford, buying cigarettes and whatever else they find more important than taking care of their animals. I would work ten jobs just to make sure my pets had everything they need I wouldn't just abandon them. We're responsible pet parents, I wish everyone was.

The dog was beyond will behave and they had the dog until it dead of old age at 20 years old. Did I say again super trained and beyond will behave. I seen people on the dog whistle show that can’t control their pet period because they don’t understand how to even care for a pet period.
All my dogs acted outside their breed due to good training and understanding ones dog and emotional play. All dogs have different personality a breed don’t completely tell you how they will be it like human that love to put everything in a stereotype than get surprised when that thing don’t fall within it at all. It like horses and other animals some can be more lay back and go with the flow, some more overly happy and hyper, some more drown and depress, some more angry most the time, some more lazy, some more work alcoholic, etc just like people. I had dogs on all scale of the spectrum. Had a more depressed dog I help took care of but my cheerful personality cheer her up and she ended up more happy. When her owner got her she run away back to our house. He was his hunting dog and she was a wonderful hunter. She was over weight but she lose weight as I walk her every day and watch her diet.

They eat chicken, beef, turkey… I mix with vegetables, rice or barley and Canine Complete (Amazon). If I can feed 4 dogs for $100 or so a month, people can feed one dog for less. My neighbor just contributed to this.
His females wasn't spayed and allowed to run loose. There was a male dog, not nuetered, that ran loose and got the dog pregnant.
The dog hid the puppies under our van.
We didn't like those neighbors from the start and they moved out as all the neighbors reported them to the police for multiple reasons.

They weren't arrested because the next problem would be something completely different. They're given a warning, next call they're fined. Next time around they're warned and then fined for something completely different.
It was a never ending cycle over there.

Denver is dealing with issues like this as well. I don't think people should have the options to not spay/neuter. The animal laws should be stronger. Backyard breeders, breeders in general, should not be allowed to sell unneutered animals freely. This country is so backwards with so many things, animal welfare included. First world country my a**.

Maybe lower the cost of spay and neuter so people can afford it might also help. Can't vets write off on their taxes a charitable contribution if they offer their services to a shelter one day a month to help curtail this? Just a thought.

I have 2 dogs of my own and I love them to death, but the expenses are crazy. I’m single and they’re my only kids so I can make do but I can’t imagine others. You not only have to pay a license fee, most homes owners don’t allow pets or there’s an extra deposit on pets, the vets are extremely expensive one minor visit can cost almost $1000 especially if you go to a shady vet that is just adding on unneeded exams. Pet insurance exist but the monthly payments can be another stress.
But still I love my dogs and it’s sad to see some dogs who once had owners are now just roaming around.

My last cat died in 2012. I was very lucky because vet bills were no so expensive and my vet leaned on the side of compassion. So when my cat got a liver and brain disease. He said we can keep alive but it will eventually be a horrible painful death. I took him and a few months later when he struggling to breath the vet came and put h to sleep as I held in my arms in our home with his favorite blanket. It was $400 including cremation to do it at home but it was worth it.

What I am surprised of is the breeds in the video we saw. {Prime breeds of dogs sitting in shelter}. Also, all the covid fosters are back dumped at the shelter too.

Agreed vets charge way too much. I think when you have an emergency vets should have to treat the dogs/animal even if you don’t have money. It’s a skill they should share/ be charitable with. Let people make payments. I was at emergency awhile back and this lady brought in a sick cat. They wanted $8000 to unblock the cats bladder. I paid $2500 just for a few stitches in my dog. This poor guy brought in a small dog whose eye was pooping out. They refused to treat the dog because the guy didn’t have the thousands of dollars they wanted.

How can they afford a vet bill if their dog becomes ill or is already suffering with a health condition?
