Join Burnham with Teen Vogue's Lauren Duca to hear how this 27-year-old star made the rapid transition from teen RUclips sensation to in-demand comic to filmmaker - and why he’s revisiting the traumas of middle school in his first big-screen outing.

the amount of times bo has to interrupt the audience’s laughter with “no really”, “this is not a joke”, “truly i’m not kidding” is insane. it makes so much sense when he talks about the dread he gets from being a comedian. no wonder, when he’s so incredibly intelligent and constantly has to clarify that he’s not joking. how exhausting.

I think that’s the curse of commentary on today’s society in general. We’re in a shitty and stupid place right now. Yes, it’s serious and he’s serious, but it’s also funny. Lots of people hear it, laugh, but understand that it’s serious and ridiculous while others hear it, laugh but don’t understand which is why he’s saying that he’s serious.

I'm only half way through this interview, but oh my god this woman knows what she's doing. She's asking all the right questions, and really just bringing more out of Bo. Bo is very deep and she's encouraging him to go deeper, which a lot of interviewers shy away from in fear of getting lost in the nuances and losing the flow. But, she delved right in and indulged him.

Bo is so empathic and insightful. I have debilitating anxiety and depression and I don't talk about it to anyone. It's hard when the ones I have tried to open up to use my pain as entertainment. • @valhalla1240
      @valhalla1240 5 лет назад +10

Hey! I hear you and I have made similar experiences (anxiety and depression). I bet you could write about it pretty well, since you've described your situation like this: "feeling alone and misunderstood is a living avalanche" and I don't know how old you are, but I didn't sound that smart until.... probably ever. :)
I wished I could give you some great life advice, but I won't, because I can't, because I haven't figured it out. But this movie made me feel as if, the reason why some of us are depressed, is because we are more sensitive, care more, take in more, think more, feel more, hope more, dream more, expect more, want more, worry more, etc. We just need to figure out a way to turn it into something that isn't self-destructive, but rather informative and useful... some sort of life-toolkit.

My mom used to always say to me, "You're just too sensitive. Too sensitive." Finally, at about 50 I said to her, "Well, maybe you aren't sensitive enough." I think we are just put together the way we are and finding ways to live as WE ARE is one of life's challenges. Yes, I am insightful. Yes, I am the one to pick up things at meetings (tone, buried anger) that other people miss. But, the depression and worry and over-stimulation goes with that. Sometimes I need to be alone. Sometimes I need to reach out to people. But, I think we need to stand on our own inner reality of those things and not let the positive, perky people tell us who WE need to be. There really are a lot of us, and quite frankly, I think we make excellent friends and valuable co-workers. Actually, my best friend of over 50 years is positive and perky. A lot of it is an act and it is a valuable act, but she does not dismiss who I am either. Love to you.

@@ironicinorironic. - I found it to be shockingly brilliant. Such incisive vulnerability coupled with sheer artistic genius goes well beyond a special meant for entertainment purposes.
It's almost unfair that Bo's work is judged within the same metric as his contemporaries' offerings. He's so far beyond what they've demonstrated they're capable of producing artistically, as well as the reactions engendered within the hearts and minds of the masses that Bo can, currently, only be measured against himself.

I love how in the movie he doesn’t “make fun” of anyone. Kayla is genuine, and yeah she’s a bit cringey but the movie doesn’t frame her in a way to make a joke out of it. And it doesn’t get put onto the teenage boys to relieve the discomfort, he points out the terrible shit in both (Kendra? Kendice? Whoever, compared to Kayla, Aiden compared to gabe)
He doesn’t allow the audience to dissociate from them by making fun of them. He shows them as people
Idk where this rant went lolll

also, what I love about Bo is that he has thoughts that all of us have, he has a similar experience with anxiety that other people have, but he's SO GOOD at expressing his thoughts and articulating what he has to say that he makes us want to listen to him. kind of like how he said writing 8th grade, he didn't want to over wrote the kids speech and make them over articulate because 8th graders aren't articulate at all, but it would've been easy for him to because of how articulate he is

It makes me so happy Bo got to speak to her ability [Elsie Fisher], and in this way, in this interview; however, there could be other interviews where he’s spoken to it, and I just haven’t found them. On the front of Elsie Fisher?
Elsie Fisher’s performance in this made me think of of how great Bryan Cranston is able taking you on an entire emotional journey by covering parts of his face with his hands, then gradually revealing more and more to us.
There’s no need for him to monologue: he literally shows it all to us.
He’ll have a chain of reactions with the top of his face, loosen his grip and his expression starts to remould and his body language starts to shift.. and I could keep going or you could see it for yourself:
“Breaking Bad scene Jane Dies.” Setup with minimal spoilers: the girl in it isn’t evil, she’s troubled, and is now helping a guy down an even worse path than he’d already put himself on.
It’s two people slipping together, hand in hand, yet neither of them meant to do that, and neither person is evil (as it’s more complicated and more nuanced than that). So:
In that? Bryan Cranston does EXACTLY what I’m talking about. And, Elsie Fisher is the first actor I’ve seen capable of doing that since Bryan Cranston. Like Bo said she wasn’t working off archetypes, or what anything was, “supposed,” to be like. She was able to live in the skin. We’ll all be talking about her from here forward 👏 kick ass job Elsie and kick ass job to Bo for honing in on that, and really testing for it (I think he said she had like 7 call backs? Yeah 🙌🤝).

His mental breakdown about our current state of politics and the medium vs. medium aspects of things really got me. That's how I've felt since 2015 when all of this started and, idk, it's nice to see that there are more people like me out there who are just as fed up and just as confused by all of this. I watched this when it came out and needed to watch it again in 2021 and it's just as relevant (which in retrospect is kind of sad). These intelligent conversations are incredible and I love them.
