Really enjoyed these few minutes with you over (my) coffee. Thanks!
If you had a film layer that was removable on top after the cut you could just spray paint the cutout. Maybe the adhesive would interfere with the cut though.
Wonders if spraying with plastidip and making 1light pass with 250 paper gets a crisp 2 tone
Shellac won’t dissolve with mineral spirits but paint does, so I spray wood with shellac, carve, spray paint and then mineral spirits wipe -. It won’t work for melamine
Certain latex paints would peel right off after but might not machine the best.
Chaotic life is always best when you can share it and work with your family. You are very blessed!
Great project, well done! I volunteer for a local regional theatre where we have two CNC routers very similar to yours. I love watching them work. Very fast and efficient use of material.
No need for a bandsaw riser I bought one for my saw several months ago.
Love your channel
"We are such a filthy species" LOL
I've had good luck using acrylic paint in vcarved melamine. I use a foam brush to goober it in, then I use a shop towel, wrapped around a chunk of 2x4 with some denatured alcohol sprayed on it (sparingly) to clean up the over-goober. Leaves a nice clean finish. YMMV.
I bought this exact bandsaw 6 years ago because of your channel. I use it on almost every project that i do. One of the best purchases I have made.
Me too! use it all the time. It’s a great saw in my eyes
Nice to hear what you are up to. Also really enjoy hearing that your wife's laser business is going so well. Most importantly good to hear she found something she can be passionate about.
THANKS FOR THE VIDEO
Jay your a breath of fresh air when you upload man. RUclips woodworking is getting wild these days. It’s all tik tok trends and “top 5 for under $x”. And people literally trying to spread their Temu affiliate links. And these people do this and literally never build anything. I miss when RUclips woodworking was just you, TWW, stumpy nubs and a few others that actually respect and honor the craft and are not just chasing clicks to survive because you actually have talent and skill to rely on. Don’t get me wrong some solid ones have came along since you guys started like bourbon moth and Jonathan Katz-Moses and a new guy timber biscuits and MWA woodworks but the Jay Bater miter station will always be the OG that stormed the internet and had everyone copying. I know it’s a long rant but thanks for still coming through for us.
I was just noticing the same thing the other day. A lot of woodworking channels are doing everything but woodworking. 😂
I've got this same bandsaw and have made many projects with it.
Top Work !
Great video,,, fun shop time is the best time
I have this exact bandsaw and would love the riser block.
I have been off woodworking RUclips for a while. I can't believe you have almost 700k subscribers!! Congrats!
Wow I remember you fitting that riser block....
The riser block would be very useful. The sign turned out great.
"We are such a filthy species!" LOL so true
I have the same bandsaw! Too bad that I have no use for the riser block. I hope you found someone who does. Great video!
thanks
A year ago I spent a half hour reading a melamine versus laminate page. Had little understanding of the difference before studying.
I see a restoration video coming!!!!! Hopefully.
I have the grizzly 14" G0555 looks like the same saw just not the anniversary edition. I've been wanting to get a riser for it for a while so I would love to have it if it's still available.
When I was in high school (I'm retired now) I was walking thru a K-Mart when suddenly a painted sign, 4x8' sheet of 1/2" plywood, sliced thru the air about 2' in front of me, and smashed into a counter to my left, one of the two chains it was hanging from the ceiling gave way, a split-second later I'd had a smashed up rib cage. I'm glad to see you add a couple reinforcement screws to your heavy sign, but those things give me the willies to this day.
I could use the riser block to bring an older Jet bandsaw into resaw use. I put a 2hp motor on it so a longer blade/taller cut would be awesome.
If you're not painting the main surface you could wax it before routing then dye the letters?
Or cover it with adhesive shelf liner that can be pulled off later
I have that exact grizzly 14" anniversary edition saw. I do need the riser to resaw for face frames. If the others that beat me to the punch pass on it, I can definitely put it to good use.
Get the carter stabilizer for the bandsaw if you’re just cutting curves. I haven’t broken an eighth inch blade yet. I always wear them out.
I will take the riser block!
Same band saw and put the riser block on with the laguna resaw and it cuts 1/32" veneer (ash) and I never looked back.
Hey Jay - I'm probably not the first commenter to say they could use a riser block but, I have a 1942 Delta Milwaukee bandsaw I'm restoring and that riser block looks like it could fit. Anyway, great content and I love getting all the updates!
Gee, that riser block would look awful nice on the G0555 i scored for $150 last week. I'd buy one myself if I weren't already in the proverbial doghouse for surprising my wife with such a great steal by brandishing it proudly in the living room of our 2bdrm apartment.
And although I am sleeping on the couch for now "since I love it so much", I can incontrovertibly say I would sleep that much better knowing I was doing so next to 12 beautiful inches of resaw capacity.
I would love to have that riser block
Thanks for the content! I noticed you have changed the dust collection shoe for your Avid CNC, I just built a new 4896 Pro and downloaded your version a few weeks ago. Do you like the one you have now better and is it available online? Thanks
Voluntold? That's funny.
Bill
Shipping to the UK would likely be prohibitively expensive but I have a 14" Delta clone that the riser might fit... thanks for the entertainment Jay.
I’m sure I’m too late but I’d love to add that block to my old delta
I need a riser block!
We write on melamine every day at work. Comes off with thinners.
👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻 Did you like the riser block. I've so much negative, bought one couple years ago but have been hesitant
Cool cutting for your neighbor!!! Wondering how much $$ for a few plain charcuterie boards? I could cut them out, but im a little afraid of my tools.
i have this exact band saw. but they dont make the riser anymore...i would love to have it if it is still available.
I have this exact same bandsaw. I bought from someone and havent had a chance to get cleaned up. Looks like we have the same issues with the rust and needing some new equipment. I would really love to have the riser block if possible, if not could you do a video on fixing it up. Its funny i also started off with the same Skil bandsaw from lowes and now this one is my first real one.
I didn't even know melamine would glue with wood glue
I don't know what number I am but I'll take it if I'm the one. :) Thanks, Gary
If the back of the sign is also melamine, does the glue actually bond? I thought glue wouldn’t stick/bond with melamine.
Would it work to put a good coat of paste wax on that melamine? Before you cut it to be able to dye the letters.
Jay - not sure how well “taping” the surface before cutting- not sure what tape you would use - and then dying would work. Or, is there any way to “seal” the melamine first so it won’t absorb the dye. Sign looks great
If you put down blue painters tape where lettering goes then carve then paint then remove tape and Bob’s your Uncle
Way to pay it forward with the riser block!
For the melamine, any local shop programs who would be willing to pick u on the scraps or art programs? A pick up only, program. Yes youbahve to coordinate it, but it may be worth it to them.
Beautiful work Jay! In your opinion, what would be the best method of painting the inset letters on the melamine?
Your name came up a couple times last week at Maker Camp in the Catskills. I don’t remember who it was, I think it might have been Jon Peters. Anyway, that is such a cool event!
Interesting that everyone that uses melamine for work table tops says that glue won't stick to it. So, apparently that isn''t quite true?
Apparently, it depends on the glue. I've been using melamine for bench tops for years and regular yellow wood glue doesn't adhere well to it. It does "stick" (I'm referring to excess glue from glue ups) but is easily removed with a paint scraper. There is a "special" glue designed to glue melamine to melamine but I've never used it.
I'm wondering if some aren't confusing Formica with melamine which I think is quite a bit different. Glue definitely won't stick to Formica.
@@philshock3805: Some may, indeed, be confusing the two but I've been building cabinets with melamine sheet goods for years.
Great Video, Where did you get your apron from????
If you ever get the chance, if you're called to do a/an (relatively speaking) inexpensive sign, I'd like to see how your CNC handles HDO. I've got some I've used for various projects, but I'd like to see if a CNC can handle all the fiber and resin in that type of plywood. Cool sign!
Would sealing the melamine first reduce the staining?
nice looking sign. What is that FONT?
time is malleable, reality is relative
Mask the melamine before carving and you can spray paint the carving with krylon.
"Voluntold" 👍
How's the thumb doing??
🙏👏👍💪
Wax the melamine prior to painting/inking the cutout. That'll help your cleanup.
That was the suggestion I intended to make. 👍
i have trust issues and a vacuum table just doesn't seem reliable
Lol such a filthy species i couldnt have said it better myself!😂
absolutely use screws to hold pine to melamine. I use melamine for bench tops because glue won't stick to it! they might try acrylic paint crafty girls use. Get it st hobby lobby
Incorrect. Glue sticks quite well to it. I ruined a melamine assembly table top because glue stuck to it. Might be a difference in the glue.
@@JayBates I had the exact opposite situation. The glue stuck to the surface, but the surface peeled away from the melamine! Maybe crappy melamine??? I would definitely use screws based on my own experience.
@@JayBates I actually use the painter’s tape and super glue method to hold my MDF boards down and it works perfectly!
Perhaps donate the off-cuts to a local high school or college that may have a CNC program and they can use them for testing out their programs before cutting their actual work-pieces
You're either putting scraps in landfill, or into the atmosphere. Unless you're building something useful with your scraps, it really doesn't matter a whole lot.
Is it really doing 300ipm? Lots of curves, I don't know if it's actually hitting 300ipm
Can't you donate all the scrap melamine to a school program? Love you videos by the way
Xin chào bạn nhé, cảm ơn bạn đã chia sẻ video này, chúc sức khỏe bạn nhé, lúa chúc cả nhà xem video vui vẻ nha, chúc sức khỏe cả nhà ▶️👍👉🔔👈🤝🥰😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍
Vole-told.... I like that. Being married I guess you get "volen-told" to do things sometimes. I know I have before.
First! (Yaaay me!)
I thought glue wouldn't stick to melamine
I thought so too. Then ruined a piece for an assembly table top after one glue up.
Ya this was my biggest fear here
Are you guys thinking of Formica? Glue definitely won't stick to that but pretty sure it's quite a bit different than melamine. Melamine will "wear", whereas Formica is far more durable.
Hmmm. This is good to know lol.
We use special melamine glue for a reason. I've seen plenty of cabinets fail because people tried to glue melamine with a PVA/crosslink wood glue.
Second!! Damn!!
Two bandsaws is the way to go. And yes, I know how pretentious and privileged that sounds.
Only if you can't afford three...😄😄
I cant imagine lazily complaining "we are such a filthy species" while dumping waste into a trash bin. We get it. You're not a fan of americas consumerism. But you cant have it both ways
