  • Installing and testing the Comet CX-333 Tri-Band Antenna (not sponsored). Since I got my amateur radio license, I've been using a home made dual band dipole to get on the air. It's worked great for me for two years, but it's time for an upgrade.
This antenna was super easy to set up and install and has been performing excellent. At around $185, it may be a bit pricey, but is so far worth it in my opinion.

"If you see something I should have done differently..." Love that. Too many YT'ers pretend to be an expert. I love that you keep it real, are willing to let others improve you, reminding us know that we're learning together and that collaboration moves us all forward.

I'm a huge fan of the Comet antennas, but I think people overlook what a difference a good coax makes. You can't beat LMR-400; best bang for the buck. 73 N6UTV

    Hey Tom
Check the comments in your last Video on CW, I posted some more fairly in depth stuff. Doesn’t show up of my other accounts, but does show up on this account I posted from
Nice too see the antenna worked out of the box
FYI, that loop of coax at the antenna base is a _common mode choke_
Because of the skin effect, that is, RF flows on the surface of a conductor, your coax acts as 3 conductors: core, inside of the shield and outside of the shield.
A common mode choke prevents the RF travelling back down the outside of the shield and keeps it going into the antenna…..kind of :-)

The install looks clean and tidy, it would be a joy to see! I have worked on small aircraft and the wiring... leaves to much to be desired sometimes. I am also doing a Bachelors in Electrical engineering and I didn't see any glaring mistakes and given the lack of comments otherwise, it seems like you did a fantastic job!

The 220 portion of the antenna works better than just the 220 mono band antenna… great video

Nice install, Tom. For a base station on UHF/VHF I don’t know that you need anything more or different.
Looking at your path triangle, the next thing to try is Simplex with that guy on the other end. I’ll bet that rig will do well at seven miles direct.

Great video, thanks Tom! I'm curious to see how a Baofeng (or any HT really) would perform on that antenna.

Great video Tom as it got me also thinking of an upgrade from my roll up jpole antenna.

I have a roll up J pole too. I think it’s the N9TAX one. Great antenna but this one seems more befitting of a permanent base station antenna imho

Do you have lightning protection equipment on your garage? Might want to look into it.

Great video as always. I too am playing around with new antennas for my 2 m/70 cm radio. Fun stuff.
Need to get off my butt and test for general.

I've spoken to a lot of GMRS experts as I'm new to it and ham and getting my technician's test next week, I've talked to many people that are using the CX333 and it seems to be acceptable for GMRS

You can receive all day long, just be careful not to transmit with high swr too long to avoid damaging radio.

Tom, since it has been about a year (or so) how is the CX-333 working for you? I ran a Ringo Ranger for 2 meters in Rockford when I lived there, worked well for 25 yrs, so since I'm in South Dakota, I'm researching antennas to get me back on the air. 73 de KA9NYN.

Super new to your channel. Looking at ham so far watching you and Tech Prepper, wanted to ask about com shots with laptops.... How to hook up a tough book, let's say CF31
To what ever ham radio. I'm super new, so let's say HF... Com shot to your stationary COC and have them respond in kind, real time ( "HAM _ Text") if you will. No voice to intercept and no crypto needed. That's my Idea anyways. Com shot data burst from forward operator back and forth with set up COC in real time ish
Have you ever done this? Is this even possible? Have you ever used NVIS or constructed field expedient antenne in the field or with HAM platforms. Examples: sloping long wire, or box antenna?......... please let me know. Thanks.

Tom, I bought and installed a CX-333 also. I am using it for my HT and a Mobile /base unit I bought with an A/B switch to go between the two.
I was wondering where you applied the sealing tape that was included in package? The instructions don't say.

Maybe a bit late to you, but I used mine on the coax connector to the antenna. How's your antenna working out? Mine is quite decent.

Tom, what repeater were you hitting? Was it CFMC’s WA9ORC on 443.750. Hope to hear you on their Night Watch Net, every night at 10pm.
