i think you missed one important reason , which is the love of artistry .... if you appreciate art and have a passion for creating art that will boost your chances for being more successful !
I think there is a fear for some people of being rejected and me personally as an amateur I would need to get over it in order to do this as a business.
I'm not a photographer, but I always love to hear your thoughts on business. It's the main reason I check out your channel. :) As an independent artist, who struggles with the 'business' side of the profession, I really appreciate your perspective. Thanks for another thought provoking video.
I work as a full time cook in a busy restaurant 5 days a week / 10 hrs a day. All or most of my spare time is spent editing / cold calling clients / and shooting. I don't have a life. I'm tired all the time. I've never been happier - Passion and dedication show through your work...put your head down and give'er.
@@alexanderstyrlander7991 wow, its 5 year old me! I'm good! Hard work pays off, I have retainer clients and have a good steady revenue of income. Its not an easy road but you can do it if you want it badly.
Ya but when he opens his mouth you realise he's a smart, self-motivated successful dude- dude. He would be the one making money taking killer pics at a wedding :)
+Jared Polin that's exactly right. People don't want to hear your prices or your big special. . They want to see your work and what you bring to the table!
+Brian Kirstein Yep and the fact that it needs to be pointed it out highlights one of the problems many people trying to make it as a photographer have. They don't see themselves as first and foremost as a small business owner.
+Alex Wroblewski I don't know what school would possibly do that. I went to a liberal arts school for photography and learned everything crucial I needed to know about shooting, processing and printing and of COURSE we had to shoot in RAW. The real issue? They didn't teach a single things to us about business!
+Kyle Medina I'm not arguing that fact, and I actually read this statement the wrong way "students don't learn how to use raw to improve their photos". I thought he was trying to say that schools teach how to shoot in JPEG. Either way; you're right. It makes no difference.
I love the "dont push" and the "aren't good enough" advice. People migrate away from pushy people. I do it. Everyone does it. Sell yourself, but dont annoy. And yeah, dont ask your mom if she loves your photos. She will always say yes. Ask strangers. If they think they are poorly shot, you have work to do. Anything I've done in my life Ive asked people to be honest with me because THATS more helpful than making me feel better and telling me I'm amazing.
+The Post Color Blog (Dave's Tuts) :D Not always :D My mom hates most of my work, but I gave hundreds and hundreds of clients who love :D (I am pro photographer for 6 years now)
Following my mother's lead as a journalist writing news and taking pictures for the area newspapers I thought I could get set up as a photographer but after two disasters taking pictures at weddings (i.e.-wrong shutter speeds while using a flash) I opted for a career on the railroad.
Im only 15 and already have gotten so much work for a tiny island in Hawaii... Im working so hard and am learning so much from you!!! Thank you so much for all the tips!!!!
Many would find this discouraging but for me its like this is the truth and you just got to go out there and not be scared. I have to admit when I first read the title I thought "Oh man" but like everything you got to give it a shot and look, nothing like I initially thought. Thank man, for some it will not work for them but it definitely it a home run for me.
"Chief just chewed my ass out! You see I don't have any bit of it left, don't you?" - Dude that's a quote from some old movie about a cop from Beverly Hills, but I want to tell you thank you for that ass whooping. It seems like it was done out of sincere kindness. Gracias, Sir. Sometimes a good and honest dose of truth is just what we all need to hear. Respect!
Yup, I used to make excuses, and being from Philly hasn't made it any easier, but now I am my own boss, I run my own video company. I get paid great, I travel, I take care of my family, I name my price and I'm only 27 yrs old! Being a director/videographer is the best thing that have ever happened to me! Jared I agree with everything u said!!
Well said Jared. One other thing you left out was being patient. I'd say being patient is the biggest step of them all because it ties in with the other five things you said in this video.
I agree! 5% is taking pictures, rest it marketing and social skills. Not many are willing to do that, so for not lazy there is actually little competition.
My plan is to mix photography and art. I'm recently started to copy one of my photos via colored pencil. I've realized that it's going to be hard to make money off the bat doing nature photography so I'm going to use my art skills to help get me started and start selling my art first. I've already sold art in the past but never made much money do to my laziness. Now that a have a real job(doing dishes) it has given me the motivation I need to pursue my passion.
You are spot on! I have been in business since 1985 and I, like you (you are much, much younger though) have heard them all, the favourite two I get are "its alright for you" and "I would love to do what you do but I have a mortgage, family etc". Excuses, Excuses, Excuses. Good stuff.
I've no desire to become a professional photographer and for me photography. and art in general, is about more than being a means of making you wealthy. What you didn't add to your list was the most basic question, 'why do I want to take photographs?' Clearly you're all about making money and that's fine, but your 'reasons why you won't make it as a photographer' video should be titled 'why you wont make it financially as a paid professional photographer?'
+Nicholas Fox Every artist would like the opportunity to share their gift and art with others and make money off of it to help support their work. He is just trying to show people how to do it efficiently. And for some people it's not their calling to make money off of it.
+Mark Kurowski Wrong. As an artist myself who does make some money off it, I much prefer to sell my work to someone who will enjoy the artwork, rather than just for my own financial gain. I have also turned down many commissions because I didn't think the photograph would work as a drawing. Not everyone is out for every penny they can squeeze out of people. Like the many RUclipsrs who choose to advertise on there videos for financial gain. Really, they aren't doing it to be helpful, they're doing it to make money.
For me, people simply enjoying my artwork is extremely rewarding... But I'd never exploit that for anyone, some people do still have morals on this Earth, we aren't all hypocrites :)
I often do not agree with many of the comments on these videos but appreciate that they are being made. This one however is precisely right, but not just for photographers. Being a good photographer is only a small part of having a successful business in photography, the same way being a good chef is a small part of running a successful restaurant. The business of photography is business, promotion, communications, management, creative in solving business problems such as that example of "I am in a small town", by turning that into an advantage instead of simply an excuse. Knowing the market is part of your job....not just what you assume it is but precisely who are the users of photo services, talk to 500 of them see what their needs are and become a solution for them. Small business, even mid size business is usually poor in market research because they think they have no time for that but it is foolish to make any decision about the business, equipment, training, promotion without knowing the real status of the market is. I often give talks to young business person club meetings or seminars and I am always so surprised how little understanding of the business side of their chosen field the audience have. Photographers are no different
+renderuthis haha shooting film already makes me a little bit pretentious already but not so pretentious that I would go around calling myself an artist.
***** I would argue that it is not. I do not claim to be a master of light, nor composition. I'll call my work art when people start telling me about the meaning they attribute to it or the story they think my photographs tell.
+AmbiencePT That's awesome! Also to add to my original comment I ended up getting a pentax 67 with the 55mm, 105mm and 200mm lenses so I can shoot 6x7 film. I might bring it to the wedding I booked for next summer.
All true for more than just photography! I'm a web developer building photography and video production into all my work. One feeds the other. Build on what your good at and expand your services and talents. Never stop marketing yourself!!!
You know I read the title and got pissed off but watched the video and it motivated me to keep Pushing. You left off #6 sir. I'm the one whose afraid of rejection so I do not even sale my self. Thanks for the video and all that you do to make us successful!
Right on Jared, I worked for a studio that didn't follow this simple 5 (plus a few others) reasons and closed their doors 2 years ago. Fortunately they recognized their mistakes and regrouped. and now they are back as a cutting edge technology studio, staying ahead with all the current trends, and utilizing all resources that were right at their finger tips. I'm happy to back working with them again! :-)
Jared, when you said this two years ago is what you just said recently (this video is old) good to see you’re consistent with your values. Keep evolving as a photographer or you will fail. 👌🏽
The main point you really highlighted well was about being lazy, so many people today are just lazy, they expect success to come with very little effort, it's all about mentality, motivation, desire, crafting, time, putting yourself about, and I don't just mean in your line of work I mean all in types of work, very few these days want to put in the leg work, sweat and tears it takes to do well.
Composition is number 1. Very true, my dad owned a commercial studio in Virginia in the 1950’s. He was a combat photographer, and cinematographer? He offered photography and 16/35mm. He used to say work won’t look for you, so get out and look for it.
If everyone is doing the same then nothing changes. If you are working hard but doing wrong stuff you are not getting anywhere. Just doing something is not going to help. You need to put your time and energy to do right things.
Great video, you are right on as to why certain people will never make it in the photography business. So I have a question have you ever done a poll to see how many of your current subscribers are watching your channel to learn the business aspect of the photography world and how many like myself are in it just as a hobby, one of the reasons I watch your channel is your passion for photography, and your passion shows in your work and of course your show is hilarious. I'm retired and have no desire to start a photography business, but none the less I enjoy your show and many others here on youtube, it is great learning new ways to do things, watching all the different channels have gotten me to explore other aspects of photography, and what I mean by that is all I was interested in before was strictly landscape photography, but now I am doing some macro, portrait, birding and wildlife and I am constantly trying other things. So thanks for having a great show.
That's exactly what I'd want to do, but some colleges like Art Center of Pasadena have their curriculum split in two, your choice in major, then marketing strategies and business as the other half. So I think that'd work perfectly
#2 depends I feel. I know some very successful photographers who do not shoot video. They are only stills photographers and they make a decent living only shooting stills. I think the more important message here (and maybe this is what you meant) is stay up to date with what is in style and what people like. For example, if doing duo-tones was popular but no longer is, then maybe stop doing duo-tones or find out what is popular now and try to work on that. I don't think you have to shoot video to be successful as a photographer. it may help your portfolio but I don't think it's a necessity.
I'd like to add a reason 1.1: I am too afraid to ask around. I just lurk around instead of asking people. Don't be afraid of getting a no. Some day somebody is going to say yes.
I don't have patience for photographing people, I used to photograph weddings & portraits in the pre-digital era. Yet I have more than enough patience for photographing wildlife. I guess if I have any prospects of making money with photography again I should get back on the horse.
Thanks, Jared! I guess I am going to sell all of my camera equipment. Oh wait, I really don’t feel like taking the time to post it online. Maybe I can get one of my friends or family to buy it, then I’ll be able to go and buy a new recliner.😊
You are right. I know a daughter that helped her Dad's photo business increase. Because she did all the suggestions you mention. 1. got up and networked 2. started a blog talking about "her wedding day" stories, advice and suggestions. 4. got lean and only bought what was needed not what was wanted. 5. despite the competition, they increased their business by 30% within a few months. Fortunately her Dad was a photo geek. So keeping up with tech was never an issue. That's why number 4 was so important them. LOL Her Dad is at a better place now. But she continues to move forward and is getting better.
You’re awesome brother! Thank you so much for your channel and videos!!! So much amazing and useful info! Love this video! So true! I’ve seen it happen to other photographers one to many times. They simply refuse to do more than they know and just stay in the same place and complain all the time.
Thank god you mentioned the video side of things. I'm sick to death of photographers saying "Oh I don't shoot video", learn to do it for christ sake! I started video last year and it has opened up so many doors and I now get more video jobs than I do photo jobs, because it's a niche. They put video mode into cameras for a reason, use it!
Your honesty is a precious thing, I love it. Oh, by the way, you're a great teacher/educator. I don't have to say it because you already know. Your Photos are spectacular.
you can shoot the same picture with any device or old camera to get a great shot its how you planned to take the shot so you dont have to move with the times
This is THE BEST VIDEO you have made. Hands down. #1. Great job. Perfect execution. I'm not just trying to stroke your lens barrel either. I don't think anything could motivate someone more to work hard.
Everyone has the same potential to accomplish things anyone else has. I turned a hobby I had at 12 into a job not needing college at 19 and have been there for almost 20 years.
The more photographs we see, The more ways we find to better express what we feel via photographing. so see more,, shoot more. & learn a little of studio lighting,, that will help.
excellent video and a LOT of this applies to life in general. Kids, if you start feeling sorry for yourself, you are finished. It is a jungle out there. Toughen up inside and smile on the outside and put energy into everything you do, or you will sink.
I already saw it a lot of yours videos, but this one, just blowout my mind!! thank you so much for sharing this with us Jared! you are just awesome guy!! thanks again!!
I’ll telling you, in a couple years, and even some people now, and wanting more film photographers. Digital is getting old and people are realizing they don’t always want it right away.
Just one hundred percent the truth, most a really sitting and doing nothing, its the easiest way, but nothing happens. When you are working you're chance is lifting, sure can it be wrong, sure its scary but the best business people they KNOW how it is on the bottom! Every time that you falling down, standing up and going on makes you better and stronger! And that's the only way to do it! Greets from the Netherlands :)
Hey Jarod! Thank you so much for your channel! You provide such an intelligent yet straightforward view of photography, and show simple explanatory ways to become a better photographer! A personal thank you for destroying my excuses and making me get out there!
I agree with everything you said, it's the hard truth. However, I'm assuming this video is only tailored to those who sell their photos. A photographer doesn't necessarily have to sell their photos to be a great photographer. There are those who can create incredible shots, compositions, and exposures. All the while illustrating an incredible story, without selling a photo in their life.
please do a video on ways to evolve i am fourteen so i wont really need it in a business but i always like to see new ways to use new technologies or techniques to improve myself
out of all of your videos that I've watched, I have to say that this is one of significantly more impact. The others were tips. This one was a straight up lesson. I got schooled. Thanks
I love this - I'm not a photographer, well sort of, I'm in CGI (virtual photographer) - this is sooooooooooooo relevant. I too know someone (also in CGI) whose work is very basic, but he gets a TON of work, and I put it down to his people skills. He's a 'yes' guy ! Lots of good lessons to be learned.
You're correct, i have a job but i love photography, i am "photographer" from the past 5 years, i live in a island with 20 000 persons living here, the salary is 500€ per month for the major of workers, people give me a positive feedback but no one has 1€ to spend with photography. My passion is photography, but in this island there is not even 1 full time photographer, not even in govern. Sorry for My bad inglish. I love your videos, i wish success for you. From Açores, Portugal
+illdee04 then no one will see your photos because of the first two problems. Even if your not a good communicator you can still become un-lazy ( if you chose ) and movie photos to the right people and places etc. and make it that way. Good photos sale them selves but not if you don't get out and show/display them.
I just found you this morning and you easily had my attention with the kermy and now I'm def sold. Your videos are great man. Thanks for making such a great channel.

As a senior that is going into college and majoring in photography, this is scary and useful. Thanks @JaredPolin
+DslrSkateFilms don't just focus on photo focus on video, editing, marketing branding so on so forth.
minor in photo but major in business
That's exactly what I'd want to do, but some colleges like Art Center of Pasadena have their curriculum split in two, your choice in major, then marketing strategies and business as the other half. So I think that'd work perfectly
Jared Polin Thanks Jared!
+Carl Hult I can defiantly relate!
Appreciate the honest discussion. I guess in the end all people can do is fail and learn from their mistakes or just give up
I don't have patience for photographing people, I used to photograph weddings & portraits in the pre-digital era. Yet I have more than enough patience for photographing wildlife. I guess if I have any prospects of making money with photography again I should get back on the horse.
The way that this hurts because it's the truth. Got some great tips and motivation from this!!
I was scared to watch this video. Now I'm studying up on the basics again. Shit I just learned the rule of 3rds 2 days ago.
Dropping the bomb with #5
Love the evolving with the times part. Yeahhhh
Thanks, Jared! I guess I am going to sell all of my camera equipment. Oh wait, I really don’t feel like taking the time to post it online. Maybe I can get one of my friends or family to buy it, then I’ll be able to go and buy a new recliner.😊
Excellent! Excellent! Excellent! ... Straight up brother... It's all about the relationships...Strangely, quality can vary.
WHY IS THIS GUY SOOOO REAL?? JESUS, I AM GETTING MY LIFE. Thanks for the awesome ideas and the kick in the butt!
fantastic motivation for all us shutter bugs. get out there and get to work!
LOL
Her Dad is at a better place now. But she continues to move forward and is getting better.
thanks for this video. I m starting my photography journey by jumping from point and shoot to dslr and this video will remind me not to be lazy..
i don't want to make money taking photos but this is so on point for the people that do.
This is the pep talk I needed. Thank you, Jared.
I'm not professional and don't plan to. But this was more motivational than Shia Laboeuf. I like how honest you are with it.
You’re awesome brother! Thank you so much for your channel and videos!!! So much amazing and useful info! Love this video! So true! I’ve seen it happen to other photographers one to many times. They simply refuse to do more than they know and just stay in the same place and complain all the time.
Dude. Amen...on all levels. This works for EVERYTHING...not just photography. Love your videos. Keep up the excellent work.
+Charles Green I couldn't agree more video is just another creative outlet that is very similar to photography yet the storytelling aspect is the same
Best advice ever and straight to the point to telling the truth as it is...fanx !
Your honesty is a precious thing, I love it. Oh, by the way, you're a great teacher/educator. I don't have to say it because you already know. Your Photos are spectacular.
I'm glad I just listened to this again.
you can shoot the same picture with any device or old camera to get a great shot its how you planned to take the shot so you dont have to move with the times
This is THE BEST VIDEO you have made. Hands down. #1. Great job. Perfect execution. I'm not just trying to stroke your lens barrel either. I don't think anything could motivate someone more to work hard.
Great Video! Might as well be 5 things to change to make it as a photographer! Thank you for the resource!
There it is! You’re the man Jared
Everyone has the same potential to accomplish things anyone else has. I turned a hobby I had at 12 into a job not needing college at 19 and have been there for almost 20 years.
Excellent video Jared! Totally agree, it’s fecking tough! And you have to keep pushing and learning! Thanks dude
Don't be lazy. Do shit.
Probably the best advice for photogs.
Much of the job is just constantly being active and never sitting around waiting.
Shoutout to all the people who took his advice, became proactive and made it
Wasn't sure I was going to like this video when I first saw it but then I watched it...great real talk video.
You are right, I followed your advice and now I see good results , saw our video many times and was motivational as well.... tnx!
This is SO legit. Love the energy man! So glad I subscribed to this channel. Thank you. Can't be lazy!
Awesome video Jared, Always like someone who tells it how it is.
out of all of your videos that I've watched, I have to say that this is one of significantly more impact.
Not often i agree with everything you say, but this time all points are valid. Nice one Jared :)
I make my living as a wedding photographer !
You are so right! Thank you for this video.
Greetings from Vienna , Austria
You're correct, i have a job but i love photography, i am "photographer" from the past 5 years, i live in a island with 20 000 persons living here, the salary is 500€ per month for the major of workers, people give me a positive feedback but no one has 1€ to spend with photography.
My passion is photography, but in this island there is not even 1 full time photographer, not even in govern.
Sorry for My bad inglish.
I love your videos, i wish success for you.

What if i dont communicate well and lazy but take the greatest photos ever!
That’s an awesome list .. brutally honest. Sooo true
Cannot like this enough. BANG ON FRO!
universally applicable advice to any industry
