If you go to San Miguel, I encourage you to visit these shops, you won't regret it. I'm very thankful to all these people because they gave me part of their time to have a talk with me. I definitely think it's worth visiting this town, have you visited?
I am visiting next week. I was considering moving there, but this video gives me pause - while it's tempting to move to a place that has a lot of English speakers, I'm afraid being surrounded by expats might affect my ability to learn the language as quickly as I'd like. Great video as always, Karencita.
Contributions that so many gringos live in San Miguel de Allende; Increase in drug trafficking in that area, in fact Guanajuato is the red light of the entire country in terms of narcotics and insecurity, adding to it the inefficiency of the corrupt PAN authorities, that there are so many gringos in that place is not good for the country, Let's remember Texas, that's how they started, they got in little by little like the humidity. Obviously where American retirees arrive, the economy improves and the ""status"" of the city rises and that is why prices rise. In the city, more than racism, there is classism, in Mexico, money ""whitens" you, if you arrive anywhere in a good car and with expensive clothes, everyone will treat you very well and it's normal, after all Mexico is a capitalist country.
The reason I love your channel, besides the great work in filming and editing is that you always go deeper into issues than anyone else. The internet is no place for nuance but you seek it out anyway! I applaud that! Most people would go no further than. "it's too many foreigners" "it's expensive" "it hurts locals" but the truth is much more complicated than that and there are pros and cons to this! Thank you very much for another great video!
Thank you. I think being Mexican allows me to show another perspective compared to other channels and I'm taking advantage of that. If you noticed, then it's working. Thanks so much.
I completely agree with your comment, LaKC does great research and presents it in a clear and interesting way. Her videos are so much more informative and interesting than the average RUclipsr who walks around the city giving their random opinions.
what do you mean by americans? Because of your comment, I assume that you know that America is all the way from Canada to Tierra del Fuego. You know these things right? Otherwise, I encourage you to learn about yourself a bit more.
@Juan Carlos Garcia López You are not listening to your own words/statements. The issue here is that you referred to expats, as, americans, " and only them." This comment from you is bothersome to Americans from other latituds, such as, those from Mexico living abroad. By the way, your English language grammar needs much improvement. I don't understand why you, yourself being a Mexican man would refer to expats as, Americans. America is from Canada to Tierra del Fuego, "FYI."
USA has gotten to expensive to retire with people on just social security. That’s why a lot of gringos are heading south because they can’t afford the prescription drugs and the cost of living
Americans are making life in Mexico incredibly expensive for us. I have friends that had to move out of San Miguel because they couldn't afford living there anymore. 😟 A lot of us don't want them coming here anymore.
I totally agree. They should remain in the USA 🇺🇸 .. They seem to ruin every place the move into and sometimes even change it to make it feel like they still live in the USA🇺🇸 ..they should learn the language too. After all they moved to Mexico 🇲🇽 .
Yep, once gentrification kicks in everything will change drastically. Harlem, Chicago, New Orleans, Detroit are a few examples. The locals won't be able to afford to live there.
SMA isn’t being gentrified. The foreigners are helping to preserve and stimulate the artisanal industry. It’s important to preserve the culture and employ the Mexican community. Did you not watch the video? The Mexicans living there said they really don’t have an issue with foreigners. Those that complain are those that don’t live there. Don’t base your opinion by what goes on in America. America is not the world.
My beautiful Mexico 🇲🇽 proud Mexican American 🇺🇸 ….if the Mexican government would stop being stupid and clean/fix up the mess of all the negative assholes who are ruining the country…. Believe me MEXICO 🇲🇽 would be a top world 🌎 country….it has everything ….
@@threelittlewonders I'm right now in San Miguel de Allende, I've talked to many locals (I speak Spanish) and they aren't happy to see so many foreigners in their city (and more to come). I can understand this feeling because the same thing is happening in my hometown, the difference is that we whites contribute while blacks and "Arabs" destroy.
So , what you’re saying is, immigration has an impact on people’s lives. When the US and other western countries flood the job market with millions of immigrants it effects low skilled workers. Mostly blacks and POC are squeezed out of jobs and affordable housing, but if you complain the liberals will call you xenophobic.
boink800 a typical liberal- have to result to name calling because you don’t believe in the science of supply and demand. I guess Bill Clinton and Obama are xenophobic because they said the same things at their state of the union speech
@boink800 No way. You don't know what you are saying. For that to happen, income must be very similar, and it won't happen soon, unfortunately. Second, Americans don't come here because it's cheap. They come here because it's different, it's authentic and it's beautiful. I cannot stand comments like yours completely, ignorant and full of fear.
I recently left San Miguel after living there 4 months. It is Americanized, expensive, polluted, running out of water and influenced heavily by the cartel. The Mexicans that are not rich are suffering the most. They pay high prices for rent, utilities, water. One taxi driver said that he can no longer afford to take his wife to a restaurant because the cost of living is so high. This town is fine to visit but highly overrated as a place to live. Greed is rampant, the gringos building more and more stealing what little water the Mexican people have. The problem is that all the gringos will give excuses for their influence in this town, not taking responsibility for the consequences to the locals. They invest and try to sell the land to unknowingly people that have no idea of the water problems or the cartel activity.
Heartbreaking! I went to art school here after college. I stayed for about 3 months and rarely met another American. Also prices were incredibly low and no noticeable cartel presence. I thought of going back but after watching RUclips videos, I think I'll choose somewhere else that's a little less touristy.
@@melissam9555 its not heartbreaking, its liberating! Soon American companies will move in and American workers can receive lucrative contracts In mexico! We can make a ton of money off their economy.
I am Mexican and I live in San Miguel De Allende. I don't agree with the interviewed people who said that in restaurants don't give nice attention to Mexicans because they prefer foreign people. That's not true. I always receive first-class attention here.

If you understand how immigration works, you would totally know that this happens everywhere in the world. There are parts of the US in immigrant heavy communities where everything is in a foreign language. It is just how humans are.
We live in Oaxaca, & prices here are rising very rapidly. Some of the people are coming from San Miguel de Allende in order to find a less expensive place. Unfortunately, it is getting expensive. Like San Miguel, it is a big tourist town and 50% of the tourists are Mexicans. Although I'm not sure, I think what's driving prices up are investors from Mexico City, Airbnb, & out-of- town Realtors who are taking advantage of the situation, making it more like San Miguel de Allende.
Locals should reunite and legislate to protect their town from these type os escenarios before every mexican is paying rent to a foreigner. Wake up mexico!
Easier to blame the gringos than rich Mexican investors who are buying up the properties. I can see a backlash coming, where gringo-owned properties are subjected to a special tax or buying rights are restricted.
Let's not use the term "expat" please - these individuals are immigrants, looking to improve their life situation by running away from expensive health insurance/real estate/food costs as well as seeking moderate climate. Let's give respect to other immigrants by using the same term we use to refer those who migrate from Mexico, central and south America (as well as Asia and Africa) to the US, Canada and Europe in hopes of the same opportunities to have a more comfortable life.
I think most of the comments are spot on regarding those of us who choose to live there. And yes I agree on the learning Spanish - which I will be working on more and more I am in a Mexican Colonia in SMA (no gated expat place for me) and have rented my place out but will be moving down full time in a year. Looking so forward to finally enjoying my place and chosen town. And the one comment about crime/violence- I feel a heck of a lot safer here than many places in USA. Aside from the great architecture, weather, arts, culture, music, expenses ... the thing that really draws me in is the kindness of the Mexican people. It is extraordinaire!!
I am Mexican/American born and raised in California.....I plan on retiring in Mexico so glad many Anglo Americans coming down here too....helps the local economies and just makes Mexico a better place.
I’m glad you’re learning the language. I went to SMA and hated it because of how many white Americans there was :/ A lot were very rude and entitled. But I’m glad you at least appreciate the people
Bullshit, you didn't know the real Sma. That was only other documental thar only shows the happy face of something, for godsake the "local" people you interviewed are not even sanmiguelenses. Hilario is from Oaxaca and he is not a handcrafter, he is only a buyer.
Here’s a fun fact: There are so many Mexican born immigrants in the US (both illegal & legal) that it is 5-10% of the Mexican population. So up to 10% of Mexico lives here... in my neighborhood I have to speak Spanish if I want to get to know anybody. Now I’m not complaining, I bought a house here for a reason… I like that Mexicans are conservative and hard-working. But every time I hear my friends in Tijuana complain about how many Americans live there I think to myself… Have you been to San Diego? 😂
@@MiloSatori I’m talking about Mexicans, born in Mexico but living in the United States… Not Mexican Americans that think they’re Mexican, Mexican nationals.😂 They came across the border mostly illegally, they weren’t “already here” lol.
It is called gentrification, it is gradual, but eventually will push all locals out. San Miguel's prices are great if you are an American, but if you are a Mexican, it isn't so great. The foreigners have an artistic vision and that is OK, but isn't exactly Mexico.

The fact that it’s mostly white people that have the privilege/buying power to just select a place to relocate sorta sucks. As a latino in the US, you can’t just simply get up and move to places like this. Most of us are too poor where 100% of our paychecks go to cost of living here in the US. Even in the latino communities here, gentrification doesn’t stop. While it may seem like it’s boosting the local economy once the town becomes a destination most gringos want to relocate to, it’s gonna be to expensive for natives to survive there. That is what has happened to Hawai'i and what is happening to Puerto Rico. So, i pray this community realizes that before the demographics change for good.

Before I moved to SMA, I also thought it was going to be way too much of an ex-pat place to live. I didn't want to move to a small American enclave where English is heard more than Spanish and everything is priced up because of the foreign investments. In addition, the age range of most ex-pats here is 60+. I was in my late 40's, so it wasn't exactly the age group I would normally socialize with. I have lived in other cities in Mexico but what I found here in SMA is what I'm sure other ex-pats have found. it is a place of inspiring beauty and a unique blend of Mexican culture with a spirit of possibilities for anyone with a creative soul. Yes, it is true that the influx of foreigners drives up the prices of rent and homes to buy, but at the same time, the outside investment has brought jobs, new business, and more economic advancement for the locals. Even in the relatively short time that I have been living here, I have noticed the city grow with many new housing developments and commercial projects in the works. This may be due in part to foreign investment but you can definitely witness many more Mexican moving here from other parts of Mexico. And Mexican tourism here is very popular.
How do you know they are mexican? Theres more central and south americans coming into mexico plus middle eastern aside from caucasian populations. There may be more work, but the wages still remain low. New homes are built for foreigners with higher budgets, something a mexican worker cannot afford.

With immigrants from 60 different countries from around the world living in SMA, I can’t help ask why do you start generalizing this segment of the population by calling them expats and then foreigners at the end of the vid? Expats is usually reserved for the white, upper middle class Americans who live outside the US. And Foreigners imply they have not settled here. Not every immigrant in SMA is either an expat or a foreigner. They are immigrants…. Thank you, Karencita, for another great video. I can appreciate the sentiment that SMA has changed from a small, quaint pueblito to a fast-paced expensive enclave for retirees from within and outside of Mexico. I moved to Austin, TX more than 45 years ago when it was a small, quaint college town. It has grown incredibly large and is now a very expensive place to live. But I still enjoy living here and have learned to adapt and navigate through life's challenges. Growth and progress will always be frowned upon by some.
I started visiting San Miguel in 2005 after seeing it in a movie. I never wanted to go anywhere else after that. Whenever I had time off, I would go to San Miguel. I loved it. I was going to a place called Harry's there when I heard that they were opening a new restaurant in Querétaro with the same name. I decided to check out Querétaro at that point. I really liked Querétaro more as a place to live. It feels more like home to me and San Miguel feels more like vacation, a little unreal but lots of fun. I eventually moved to Querétaro and love it here. Harry's has become Hanks. I need to take a trip to San Miguel sometime soon, it is the place that made me fall in love with México.
I've been to San Miguel throughout many years and this last time I went there with a Canadian friend who was visiting. I didn't like what it become. Looked like "Mexico the Theme park" by Disney. I wouldn't take any visitors there anymore, sadly it's looking less and less Mexican every year.

We hope to retire to Mexico, and want to visit San Miguel, but we have pretty much eliminated it from our list of possible retirement cities because of all of the expats. My wife is a native Spanish speaker and mine is ok. We also eliminated Lake Chapala/Ajijic, etc. We are looking at Queretaro, Morelia, Guanajuato, Puebla, and most of all San Cristobal de las Casas. We are cool weather lovers.
San Miguel Is one of the most unequal cities in the country. The communities around San Miguel and which belong to de municipality are among the poorest. I used to visit them when I worked for a soda selling company. The Mexican Vs Mexican thing.is also very true. Waiters and bartenders are quite discriminatory and racist despite the fact we all have brown skin. Foreigners do not pay income tax and take advantage of loopholes in migration laws. So taxes money is not pouring to the communities that need it most. San Miguel is a shame.
I just visited SMA last month ago.. it’s nice but not impressed. It’s expensive way too americanizado. We met someone that retired there and complained about how expensive it has gone
As a foreign resident for over a decade, you've way overestimated the number and impact of foreigners. Tourism is geared towards wealthy Mexicans from Mexico City. Daily life in town is geared towards history, culture and traditions. If the handful of foreigners disappeared the town would continue just fine.
No, even the children of Mexicans who are born in the United States are gringos,... Calling people from the United States ""American"" doesn't make sense, Mexicans are Americans too, they are also called ""Estadounidenses"" but it's very long name, Gringo is much easier to say.😁
I hope to visit someday but from what I know it seems to be USA LIGHT. More expensive and more English and lots of expats. Probably not for us. We speak Spanish so no real desire to be around lots of expats. We are leaning towards Puebla or maybe San Cristobal de las casas.
I have to say I was offended when the expat was asked what he liked about San Chris and he said something like it’s because everyone that is here wants to be here. He was refering to all the expats and not the mexicans. Shame on him. I bet if you talked to some regular folks or poor folks you would have gotten a different perspective on everything. I wonder how many epats run airbnb’s. I bet a ton. Bottom line is foreigners are going all around the planet doing this. Making it too expensive for the folks who are from there. My first trip to San Christoble was 40 years ago.

This was very insightful and enjoyable too. As I thought, SMA is still Mexico after all! It’s what you make of it. Have you done a video on Zihuatanejo? If not that would be very interesting!
I was in San Miguel Allende at the turn of the century. As a visitor I absolutely loved the historical aspect of San Miguel Allende. The museum’s and places to see were spectacular. A friend from Valencia wanted us to see San Miguel Allende, and she was right it was amazing! And the architecture was beautiful!
Beauifully made video. The influence of art communites in Mexico is very large Mexico City, Monterrey, Puebla, Guadalajara, Mérida, Morelia, San Luis Potosí and Oaxaca all have schools for arts and communities for artists. San Miguel de Allende like what happened in San Luis Potosí with movements in surrealism come from artists coming from other parts of the world. Mexico, according to André Breton, is 'the most surrealist country in the world.' San Miguel de Allende has had art exchange programs with major art schools around the world for many decades but it does lack a gallery network that allows local artists to be profiled on a global scale.
Great video Karencita! My family always take me to San Miguel when I visit them in Querétaro. Love that place. I’ll be going back in September! In relation to this video, I hope that Querétaro doesn’t become saturated with expats, like San Miguel, because the cost of living will increase there and in turn will effect my family. The city is already being Americanized, especially the newer areas surrounding el centro. Let’s see what happens! 🤷🏻♂️
This is a wonderful video, thank you! We’ve lived in San Miguel for the last 41/2 years, and we love it. Our friend group here is a total mixture of people, expats & locals alike. 💗

What happens if the non-Nationals get thrown out? Can anyone eventually see this? Mexico and Mexican people have a long history of taking a stand against anything that disrupts their environment. Anyone have any thoughts?
It’s rarely mentioned anymore but one of the earliest American ex-pats in SMA who came in the 60’s was the infamous Jack Kerouac, author of “On the Road”, and his spiritual cohort in crime, Neil Cassady. The latter did not make it out of SMA dying drunk on railroad tracks outside of town.
I spent some time in SMA earlier this year. I loved the people I met and beautiful architecture. I felt such a sense of love and appreciation there and I think it has a lot to do with the people. I enjoyed meeting the local owners of the vegan restaurants I went to and felt really welcome. I spent time in Alcocer doing some healing work with one of my teachers and went to a lovely retreat, Lavanda. I look forward to going back.
We decided to move to the outskirts of SanMiguel, it’s lovely and cheaper. Centro has become expensive and crowded but maintains its charm, so it’s nice to visit now and then.
I have been to San Miguel several times it’s beautiful! I hope locals treat other locals equally as important as tourist. Also that they may not get pushed away from their own town due to being too expensive or not feeling welcomed in their own hometown. having locals enjoying and being part of the town is what makes “Pueblo Mágico” feeling.
We are treated exactly the same. Please don't believe what some people say that foreign people are treated better, that's not true. However, Real Estate is getting very expensive here (for Mexican standards). The salaries are not high here, so in that sense it's becoming unaffordable for some locals. My advice for not local people: give good tips, pay fair prices and if you have employees, pay good salaries. That's the minimum you should do to contribute to the beauty, social justice and even to preserve safety and peace in this place
You really did change my perspective. I lived there and didn't want to be there, so I didn't like it. This gives me a new perspective. I also see that my friend M.J. (shout out from Morelia!) is thriving there and that makes me really happy!
I'm a retired American living here in Cuernavaca Mexico who used to live in San Miguel de Allende for many years. Cuernavaca has similar weather and less Americans. The wealthy Americans were here back in the 70s but very few here now. I've been renting a 2 bedroom furnished apartment for $350 dollars a month within walking distance to the Zocalo. Try doing that in San Miguel now.

@@jj-bp3fr no. I do Real Estate here and 80% of the market is Mexican. Honestly, your comment is really ignorant and I perceive a little bit of xenophobia
Call them that ☺️
Thanks for your report, it was good to see Francois from Adelita, the rug seller who knows to value his work and the immigrants who love the Mexican people!

Hola! I retired to SMA because I could not afford to live in the USA and the USA has become full of hateful people. I wanted to learn Spanish and kept hearing that everyone speaks English here. Not true! Rarely do I meet English speaking locals and that is what I wanted. I practice Spanish every day. The struggle is real. :)

It's getting corrupted, its not the same, its loosing the original flavor, they should allow certain amount of foreigners into town, Mexico must keep their Culture intact, Mexicans dont have, dont need to speak english in their own Land, if the foreigners dont like it, they can go home, Mexico is for the Mexicans, first and foremost, we cant let them become the owners of our land, of our culture. Foreigners should pay in dollars, Mexicans in pesos, why is everything so expensive? Mexicans get payed in pesos, not dollars, this is an absolute taking advantage of the Hospitality of the Mexicans, this should be regulated by law, SMA Is becomin a Disneyland right in fron of your eyes, and theyre going for all the other Cities in the Republic, just watch the videos out there, more like an invasion, kind of scary! i've been living in the SMA area for 43 years..the expats have been a very positive element in the city... the first public library, for example, a mobile dental health unit which attended less fortunate mexican kids in the outlying communities, the certification of the Instituto Allende, the annual Short Films Festival...the list is long.
Anyone know if the Hotel Feliz near the Institudo is still there? I have not been there for fifty years and always loved it there. I am 71 and considering now a move. It sounds lovely me it is still affordable and the sweet people of course are the real gift.
Pochos can do the same thing and it would come from the heart. Unfortunately, the Anglo has put into the Hispano this love of the material above all else and many would rather pursue a “career” rather than maintain their identidad. You support the Anglo in our lands you betray your blood and soil. Never forget that it was the Anglo who weakened Mexico to the point that the southwest and California was taken away. Never forget that new Spain was gracious in allowing Alexander von Humboldt( Anglo sympathizer) into our lands and then he promptly conveyed all this information to the American President Thomas Jefferson. These people aren’t your friends they are your enemies.

Wow a theme park sounds very strong.
@@LaKarencitaMX perhaps, but this was my personal take. High end stores selling sarapes at ridiculous prices, huge day of the dead "dolls", among other things. It looks Mexican, but you know something is off. Like Coco hah. Thanks for the great video.
It is not a theme park ! It's very beautiful and authentic❤️❤️❤️❤️. It's very clean and well maintained and it's very cosmopolitan. It's expensive yes, but it has all the amenities that you could hope for. Calling it a theme park is an insult to los Mexicans. Maybe you should visit Tijuana instead!

This is how Americans feel with so many immigrants from Mexico coming in illegally. Different repercussions, but repercussions nonetheless.
It's on a whole other scale, there are up to 50 million from Mexico illegally in the US vs a few hundred wealthy white americans in a handful of areas in Mexico.

I know that racism towards white people is apparently fine in the Leftist world (RUclips) but do you think using the term "Gringo" is really ok?

We hope to retire to Mexico, and want to visit San Miguel, but we have pretty much eliminated it from our list of possible retirement cities because of all of the expats. My wife is a native Spanish speaker and mine is ok. We also eliminated Lake Chapala/Ajijic, etc. We are looking at Queretaro, Morelia, Guanajuato, Puebla, and most of all San Cristobal de las Casas. We are cool weather lovers.
I want Americans n Canadias and the rest of the other nations to stay wherever you want to live in Mexico. Your welcome !!!
Quien viene a México que hable español ! Muy mal que los locales hablen inglés

Gringo? Isn't that a racist derogatory word for describing Americans? It's similar to calling Mexicans who move to the U.S. "wetbacks" or "beaners"?
No, even the children of Mexicans who are born in the United States are gringos,... Calling people from the United States ""American"" doesn't make sense, Mexicans are Americans too, they are also called ""Estadounidenses"" but it's very long name, Gringo is much easier to say.😁
I hope to visit someday but from what I know it seems to be USA LIGHT.
More expensive and more English and lots of expats.
Probably not for us. We speak Spanish so no real desire to be around lots of expats. We are leaning towards Puebla or maybe San Cristobal de las casas.
San Cristobal is also a very popular expat destination, but the expats there are from around the world -- not just mostly from the US as SMA.
Just watch out for los moteros.

The influence of art communites in Mexico is very large Mexico City, Monterrey, Puebla, Guadalajara, Mérida,
Morelia, San Luis Potosí and Oaxaca all have schools for arts and communities for artists.

Thanks for sharing! Great to meet MJ. I saw her art around San Miguel - including inside one of the expats house.
