  • A good customer asked us to install this electric power steering conversion system to update his 1965 Mustang from the old manual steering system. This will be done over multiple videos,and I hope to show the good and bad points of this as we go through the installation. Is it worth it? Is it better to go with conventional power steering conversions? Well, that remains to be seen. Come see what we think about this set-up. Don't forget to like and subscribe so you won't miss upcoming videos too!

    After this video was filmed, we ended up having to remove the turn signal switch after all. It turned out that once mounted it was rubbing no matter what we did. After removal we compared it to the old one and confirmed it was twisted due to the initial installation being incorrect. So, we had no choice but to waste more time installing the old switch to the column.

    I just added EPSA's electric steering to my 64 Corvette. You are so right that it is wise to test fit all the pieces BEFORE installation. Foolish me, I didn't do it and the sliding shaft had burs on it and would not slide far enough to install it in the car. Also, the splined part that fits under the dash bound up when I tried to insert the U-joint to it and I had to remove the whole thing to clean up the splines. There were many errors in their instructions and like you, I found many things missing from the video or not for my model of car at all. However, once it was in it was great! I can turn it up to full power steering and turn it with one finger or turn it down to almost no assist at highway speeds. Only time will tell if it lasts.

      Lot of things to recommend electric power steering, though. Sure, if you are making a museum piece, don't do it. But otherwise, it really is a great improvement in all regards.

      @@bladder1010 electric steering been around for awhile..... Museum peice? It looks like the kit still uses a steering box, if I were to mod the steering I would go with a steering rack either manual or power. New isn't always better and to each their own and as for my old cars I drive them every day and prefer them over modern cars and I do own two modern cars but to me they are just to overly complicated for what they are. And I do all repairs to them myself both have over 150.000 miles on them.

    This video highlights what I love about this channel. It's like hanging in a buddy's shop. Whether it's you sitting in a chair venting about that days hassle. Explaining how something does or should work. Install issues, trouble shooting, interesting tools, eveything. I feel like I'm the camera always wanting to see what you're doing. Thanks for letting hang out brother and sorry my head keeps getting in the way. Lol

    Installed this over two weekends recently. Takes a lot of trial and error to get everything to work together but once it does its a fantastic system that works great. You can adjust to full power one handed steering or to almost manual steering feel. The problem is the instructions provided don't walk you through the whole process, there is alot of thinking on the fly involved, you need to be a little mechanical minded to install but if you give it to a shop to install for you they will charge you a arm and a leg because they will have to do all the thinking on the fly as they go. Best to try it yourself even if it takes longer than anticipated you'll feel like you accomplished something after... If I can do it anyone can... One more issue is remounting the park brake... You will have to engineer a small bracket to get back to the position it was or it won't work at all. That's another thing the instructions fail to tell.

    Joe thank you for sharing. It seems like nowadays the ideas are great but the quality just isn't built into the part. My personal thoughts are if it is designed for this vehicle the problems you are running into should of already been addressed. Somewhere along in the design process all these problems should of been addressed better or they should of mentioned modifications will be required when installing. Thanks for filming I no its not easy but let's enjoy and see how it goes. You and wife stay well Artie. ❤️

    It's like a Dorman part. Has anyone at Dorman actually installed one of their parts? Sure makes me wonder sometimes. I think this will be a decent setup once you "customize" it to fit the car it was built for...just like a Dorman part. Helicoil the missing threads, throw out the new turn signal switch because it doesn't work/fit right, and modify it all so it fits. Isn't that Dorman? Side note: I saw a hydraulic ram style power steering system added to one of these and it was a real hack weld job underneath. Hi Joe, interesting video, I agree 100%, that the kit should be fit for purpose for that kind of of money, you shouldn't have to waste time and money fixing this shoddy assembly, on a more serious note how do you stand if as a result of this mod there was an accident later, are you liable for the whole claim or how would it go ,?Just wondering?, because here in the uk I think they would go after the guy who fitted it, and the manufacturer if faulty parts were involved. Best wishes to you and family, stay safe, Stuart.uk.

    • @JoesAutoElectric
      @JoesAutoElectric  4 года назад

      I think it all depends on how something failed. I mean, you can do an oil change on a vehicle, have it leave, the guy blows a tire and he will try to blame you. All I can do is make damn sure that the assembly is installed properly and everything is tight and secure before it leaves my possession. If the unit somehow fails, it will resort to manual steering, If something on the system, God forbid, breaks as a result of being defective, then it is on the maker, not me. This is normally the case.

    IMHO😲 3K💰 for it, No way Jose` Not sure if it`s a gain of minimal loss of HP by wanting a EPSA or more feel from the road in steering Performance from the customer but i would rather spend money on Motor Performance and go with a good P/s rack and pinion upgrade instead. Not criticizing his freewill to have intalled what he wants but rather what potential gains outweigh other weak links.
