  • British fashion designer Dame Vivienne Westwood has died aged 81. Westwood was a fashion force who changed the face of fashion with her punk-inspired new wave of womenswear in the seventies. In more recent times, she became a household name, dressing some of the world’s brightest stars and consistently demonstrating a deep concern for human rights and climate change. She was known as a staunch activist and depicted her beliefs in her riveting fashion shows and collections.
Her legendary 1981 Pirates runway show took place before Jean Paul Gaultier popularised nautical themes. Whether it be her iconic tartan print, towering platforms or thee Buffalo hat, Westwood’s influence is really limitless.
She most notably rode on top of an armoured personnel carrier towards the home of David Cameron, who was prime minister at the time as part of her protests against the government’s plan to use fracking to recover fossil fuels. She was a legend in every sense of the word and will be truly missed.
