I set up a 40 breeder after this video. I made a custom stand that turned out really nice. I used an eshops overflow and drilled the tank. I also chose a Fiji20 sump with a Octo 110 skimmer. For lighting I have 2 Kessil 360we lights. I have added the the apex for obvious reasons, really a great tool. I decided to go this route because I wanted to learn more about the hobby before spending $10k on the system I want for my show tank. This for me is a great learning experience,
That is awesome! Good news is that it sounds like a lot of the equipment that you've purchased can transfer over to a larger tank in the future if you choose to go that route 🙂
Absolutely love this series. It is concise and to the point. Most importantly it is on point for a new reefer. It couldn't have come at a better time for me. I've been having a ton of fun with my pico 5 gallon fluval evo for the past 5 months, and I just decided to sink some savings into a 40 breader reef with DIY sump and stand.
This series has been amazing, but I have a question regarding the painting of the tank - why black? I understand it helps to create depth, but also it highlights when the salt begins to crystalize on it and create white areas doesn't it?
A nice alternative to painting the back depending on tank size, I use limo tint film, can put in on in 5-10 minutes no mess with the same results as painting.
Just wonder if you guys have any guidance to the type of mechanical filtration you are using on the max e170’s There’s not really a good place for filter floss. Also do you keep the black sponge above the return pump or toss it?
A couple of the small X1 dosing pumps from Kamoer work great for dosing two part. BRS Soda Ash and Calcium Chloride are a great place to start...although if you're just starting, you probably don't need to dose quite yet. As far as carbon goes for a sumpless tank, we like to use a hang on back power filter with media bag. The Eheim liberty filters work great!
You mention putting it in the kitchen and that makes me wonder why don't we have air purifiers blowing over our tanks. We try to get the purest water why not the purest air to interact with the water?
I get where you're coming from. I suppose it would help, but at some point we have to ask ourselves, does the benefit outweigh the cost/effort? Plus, how big is that benefit? Food for thought 🙂
@Bulk Reef Supply yes balance against benefit verses cost always is the hard part. Wouldn't it be a neat thing to test to see if there is a benefit, or is it just a fantasy?
I would love to here about cabinet/ stand options for the 40 gallon. I don’t want a Lowe’s storage rack, the Brooklyn metal rack, or make one from 2x4s
I bought a 40g breeder that was used for a snake and the top looks like a terrarium more than a aquarium...the glass is just under a quarter inch thick and it holds water just fine...do you think it would work for a reef tank? Please help
The 32 gallon biocube and 32.5 Fluval Flex are both morbidly underrated beginner tanks. Both are fantastic, the ONLY reason I prefer the Fluval is simply because I prefer a wider tank, but aside from dimensions and some insignificant lighting differences, they're practically the same setup, aside from Fluval has the app to control lights and Biocube does not (not worth the price difference to me). Sure, you can't go too crazy with what you have in them, but one, you can't go too crazy with a small reef anyways, and two, for a GREAT small beginner setup, both are about as good as you can do for the price/size. Just add a skimmer and biological media and you're golden.
Red Sea tanks fail. Check them out before you buy. Many are leaking. My tank was perfect for 4 months then the seams showed bubbles. Water later was seen in the seams. Took it down. Looking for a tank now.
Check out some of the options from Kill A Watt. It's a power strip, but also monitors power consumption, among other features. Of course, there are also other more expensive aquarium controllers that you could consider. The Neptune Systems Apex is one of our favorites. www.bulkreefsupply.com/kill-a-watt-ps10-electricity-usage-monitoring-power-strip.html
I think hands down we always recommend the Tunze 3155 Osmolator. There's plenty of room for one in the back chambers of the E260. :) www.bulkreefsupply.com/video/view/best-ato-system-of-2019/
Mostly for aesthetics. A black background helps to hide the cords and other hang-on gear behind the tank. Plus, it hides algae on the back glass and makes the colors of the fish and coral stand out.

The one thing I see you left out is the 40 gal breeder is good bacuase you can use it for a sump when you upgrade. I did...
Love this idea
Going to start a 40 breeder. Will use it as sump when I can upgrade to my dream 120 lol
Saving up for one now.

Where do they sell the power strip with the on/off switches that was shown at the end of the tank selection 5 minute guide? It seems amazing! 😊
I'm currently running the ocean revive i get home from work at about 4:30 can you help me with my schedule and what my intensity should be please 🙏
hi, what micron is best for sump socks for an extra large tank? so it doesnt block up daily. ?
Just wonder if you guys have any guidance to the type of mechanical filtration you are using on the max e170’s

I would love the e 170
Ok I’m doing a 40 Breeder Reef, I’m gonna use the Tunze 9004 Skimmer, Sumpless ATO, What would you suggest I can do so I can 2 part dose? & Carbon?

Do you guys sale that stand you're using for the 40 breeder? been looking for one

We don't stock this particular stand. I believe this stand was picked up from a local Petco a few years back.
I bought a 40g breeder that was used for a snake and the top looks like a terrarium more than a aquarium...the glass is just under a quarter inch thick and it holds water just fine...do you think it would work for a reef tank? Please help
I wouldn’t trust it... they’re not too expensive to just pick up an fish tank.

I have looked all over but can’t find the info, but what is the display water volume on this Red Sea?
The display portion of the tank is roughly 37.5 gallons (not accounting for the glass thickness).

hi- which outlet strip would you recommend? Im buying new, so I should buy right.

Can you link the power strip?

Thanks. I guess those on and off buttons are part of the tank.
You could always try a battery backup so you dont have to worry during power outtages, they range like 50-70$
What ATO system do you recommend for a MAX-E 260 system?
I think hands down we always recommend the Tunze 3155 Osmolator. There's plenty of room for one in the back chambers of the E260. :) www.bulkreefsupply.com/video/view/best-ato-system-of-2019/

Is there a UV sterilizer that you recommend for the Red Sea E 170
We've been using the HOB UV sterilizer from Aqua UV on our E-170 in this video series :)
4:18 I feel robbed.
Some of the other videos went over 5 mins, so if you think about it, you really got extra! ;)
