2 advices for my case of writing block :
Problem : My writer's block is often about connecting the scènes together.
Like, when I have 2 important plot points but between them is just "stuff" or as I call them : transition scènes. They're not very meaningful but you can't get rid of them without the story feeling weird. Like in my last chapter, the Heroes must go through a city that turned into chaos to reach the villain's lair. Well the focus point of the chapter is the villain's lair but I can't just cut right to it without showing a minimum of how they got there.
Solutions : Generally, encountering this issue means I have to go back in the story, find a plot possibility I overlooked and change it so by butterfly effect, it fixes my problem (I'm pretty sure that was an advice from you Brandon :D)
Another solution is to add tension : in my example, I know no character will die from going through the city, but the readers don't ! I can add a near death expérience to add tension without changing the plot. (I thought about that while writing this comment !)

Oh man, I'm editing the sequel to Bad Parts right now and going through "the butterfly effect nightmare" every day. It's killing me. Add one little transition scene and you have to fix seven other scenes

Yup. I'm stuck right now, which is why I'm watching RUclips videos instead of writing. I do something similar to track the changes I made to my pre-drafting outline, only I do it after I'm done writing for the day. If I do it before, it makes me feel bad about my writing or the story and then I get nothing done.

    • @WriterBrandonMcNulty
      @WriterBrandonMcNulty  2 года назад +2

Hmm, why do you feel bad about your prior day's writing? Is it just a case of not feeling like you're good enough? All writers feel that way--it's nothing to beat yourself over (especially in regards to first drafts)

@@WriterBrandonMcNulty Yes, mostly that. But also because I write in English and English isn't my native language. If I think too much about my writing, it messes me up. Thank you for saying that, it's good to know I'm not the only one feeling this way.

It's honestly astounding how this video came up just as I started looking for better ways to track my novel. I've written about 120 pages and have discovered that I'm barely a third of the way through the story. My writing style leans on the more descriptive side, so many parts may be overly lengthy. Part of my struggle is keeping track of a timeline between three characters and all of the events in sequence. Big story, lots to tell.

Got up to chapter 4 on my Novel. I'll have to try your method. Sounds like it can really help me out. Wish I had seen this video before I started writing them chapters. Guess I'll have to go back and check the chapters again

While a fiction podcast is different than a novel, I found myself doing something similar. I kept an overview of major plot points in each episode in a Word doc for shareability across the team.
Right now, I'm using the Stephen King method of letting next seasons story rattle around my brain, but keeping short notes on broad ideas for when I do start drafting.
As someone who uses spreadsheets in my day job, I'm embarrassed I didn't already use one for tracking the story. I plan on implementing your ideas.

Awesome. And while Word docs are great for storing idea, a S/S is easier to see and take in

My big issue is, (it's my first novel) and I had NO idea what I was doing. Once I learned a few things and started writing, I knew the 1st chapter was the most important so I rewrote it 8 times before going on. I tried 3rd pov omniscient, 3rd pov limited, 1st pov, different locations, I tried it all. Instead of just writing and then write a second draft and so on. Like you, I've made all the mistakes. (I"ll bet Stephen King did as well.) I believe your genre statement. Mine is a "contained thriller." I am also an outliner. I also use Heroes Journey. I also outlined each scene.

I don't believe in Writer's Block. Everything time I thought I had "Writer's Block" was either an excuse, writing until I had nothing left in the tank or personal issues that prevent me from writing. Most of the time it's an excuse used by writers as to why they didn't write. From what I've seen and experienced Writer's block is a sign of a poor process of writing or physiological issues from other parts of a writer's life. I would say this video is more on the process of writing than writer's block. Great video.

@@WriterBrandonMcNulty sometimes I feel like I'll never finish my novel. I wrote 2 children's books though. Just need to illustrate them. I didn't know how easy it was to self publish on amazon. Very motivating.
I struggle with my novel though, because I don't see it as a novel. I see it as a movie playing out in my head. And sometimes it's hard to convey those images into writing because if I did, I would have to tell it from multiple POV's. And that's no good. So sometimes I feel like just making it a comic book series...

@@TrevorDuran3390 Is your children's book image-based? Seems like you gravitate toward images (page or screen). If that's where you're most comfortable, hammer away.

@@WriterBrandonMcNulty that's an interesting point. One of the books is image-based. The other is not. Either way, I think the writing process is very necessary. I've come to conclusions about my main project that I would have never come to if I were simply sketching pages for a comic book. Made my story more complex and interesting. Thanks for reaching out.
